Iarla Ó Lionáird introduces Noel Hill who plays a concertina made in the 1860′s. Noel Hill describes this concertina as having a special tone and an unusual key.
From Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann in Monkstown, Co. Dublin, Noel Hill preforms two reels, ‘The Wind that Shakes the Barley’ and ‘Trip to Durrow’.
Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann is an organisation dedicated to the promotion of Irish music, song, dance and language.

Here in Denver, Colorado I first learned the Trip to Durrow from Pat Flanagan of Co. Mayo in the way Noel Hill plays it here, AABBCC. I visited his brother Mark in Galway and he played it AABCBC. Pat didn’t like it that way at first, but when Mark visited here Pat changed over and played it that way for the rest of his life. Pat said “old dogs CAN learn new tricks.” 😊
I always like it AABCBC. Having said that, Noel’s performance is second to none!
Yes, Micho Russell, to Noel's right, our left, is delighted. Micho's style of tin whistle playing is derived in part from the old West Clare concertina stylings going back several generations when the only concertinas available were 20 button German made instruments played almost exclusively by women who developed some very inventive styles of playing to adapt those simple instruments to the more complex, darker heart of Irish music.
Iarla Ó Lionaird has a unique face. Wonderful concertina playing from Noel!

Never thought something as musicaly complex as this could be squeezed out of (pun intended) an instrument that's in pop culture only ever ascociated with pirates and hillbillies. Fascinating!
The English Concertina, which is a different fingering system but similar mechanically, was explicitly a high end instrument developed for classical music. Victorian concertina virtuosi used to sell out the Albert Hall in London. Many players still play classical and parlour music on the English and the Anglo, and it's also used for jazz, klezmer and many kinds of traditional music in Europe, Africa, and North & South America. It's a very versatile instrument!

Take a look at the man sitting on the left of Joe Hill, his in heaven with total happiness and joy, he reminds me of how I felt as I got to see Phil Lynott-Thin Lizzy & Rory Gallagher playing live on stage. Noel Hill was the Jimi Hendrix of concertina players
He’s not dead yet
That man on the left is the late, great Micho Russell of Doolin, Co. Clare. He was one of the greatest tin whistle players of all time and had an inimitable, idiosyncratic style all his own.
@@johnnielson7676 I’m a whistle player & his version of ‘The Mason’s Apron” is the greatest tune of all. Such soul and warmth from a five quid whistle .
@@stuartmcdonald2974 that’s right, back then about the only whistle you could buy was a Generation or a Clarke, and some of the best music ever played on those five-quid instruments
The sheen of sweat on Noel’s forehead tells me as easy as he makes it look, playing concertina with skill requires a good bit of energy, even for a highly accomplished musician.

It's an Anglo concertina (irish Concertina). The English Concertina is a different instrument - a non diatonic instrument.
