My wife's great +++ grandfather was Sir Charles Wheatstone who invented the English Concertina in 1829. There was a German version made by Carl Friedrich Uhlig in 1834. It was used in Ireland, England and in South America for tango and polka music. Concertina refers to a family of hand held bellow driven free reed instruments. Later the Accordion was invented from this and then the Chord Organ which the chord organs are considered the "Flat Accordion" ~ my wife has been playing the C-Chord Organ for years (she writes the music for it too, as there are not too many books out there now for it) and she never knew she was indirectly playing an instrument her family invented!! We say her pitch perfect hearing for music must have come from Charles! Though we would share this story :~)
There are no words to describe how mesmerizing and astonishing this kind of hand crafting actually is! This is art in form of crafting! Please, never ever stop doing your thing! A shoutout and hats off from Brazil!
The presentation was beautifully crafted just like the concertina itself. Now I can able to comprehend why there are such astronomic price tags associated in the purchase of a top of the range conceertina. Brilliant.
Gordon, your attention to detail and your exemplary editing skills make this an absolute delight to watch! That was a well-deserved win at the film competition.
THANK YOU so much! I'm making a vintage doll into a "One Man Band," and I've had a heck of a time figuring out how to make a mini concertina, with several fails! THIS WILL WORK, I'm sure of it! I hope...You're the BEST!!
This is one of the best edited videos Ive ever seen. Most especially in terms of the audio. Im not an expert or anything but this was truly mesmerizing.
Many thanks for the comment. I did try to make the audio as interesting as the visuals and I think it work well. You may like to see a new version just uploaded with the middle section of music removed - as requested by a few people. See if you prefer that. ua-cam.com/video/2_eOUmYS-u4/v-deo.html
Interesting video! Concertinas are unique in their kind and a great addition to the accordion family. We'll promote the accordion in the broadest way possible and will share your video. Keep up the good work!
Really great video! Nice work letting the sound of the handcrafted process be the focus. It let Mr. James' work come alive, which was truly mesmerizing to watch.
+Gordon Burns it was my pleasure . Seeing the craftsmanship that went into making it was truly amazing . Hearing the tune playing added to to the feel for the whole video . Well done :)
A very well filmed video, telling a story without words....excellent scene selection, lighting and editing, especially the close-ups......who filmed it?...this guy/gal was good! Oh, and Gordon Burns was a star, showing how practice can make perfect!
Newbies watching this should be aware that this is an affordable student instrument using Italian accordion reeds. High-end instrument use more responsive concertina reeds - which are far harder and more expensive to manufacture. Nothing wrong with that - with the price of an advanced instrument so high these days there's a real need for this type of beginner offering. But compared to an old Wheatstone or Jeffreys or a new Dipper or Suttner, for example, it's a different kind of beast.
I wonder what the 2 NOT likes are for - feedback always welcome. There is a second version on UA-cam to see with the backing track in the middle section removed. Some prefer that version.

I'm not sure if this question is out of place for a traditional concertina crafter; Has anyone ever experimented with putting saxophone reeds in a concertina?
Glad to see that this is made using proper buttons with a small pin at the bottom rather than the atrocious job that AP James did for me with buttons that have no locating pin but go into a large hole in the action board and consequently catch and jam all the time. I had expected a concertina with the quality of an Andrew Norman instrument - very disappointed!

So coo!!! What happened to Sir Charles Wheatsone's personal instruments? Are they still in her family or are they in a museum?

Very interesting, I would like to learn how to make them
Does anyone know the name of the song played in the concertina? It is amazing
I've always wanted a 30 Button C/G Anglo Concertina & it would be cooler if it had a Pickup so I could play it through my amp.
Fantastic skill.
incredible! thank you!

Excellent!
Beautiful
How much does one of these go for?
Does anyone know where I might find a full length documentary of this kind of process? It's a fascinating subject to me and I'd love to learn more.
I wonder what the 2 NOT likes are for - feedback always welcome. There is a second version on UA-cam to see with the backing track in the middle section removed. Some prefer that version.
I've repaired many of them but have never built one. Good work Sir.
Muy lindo ...
Fascinating! Thank you!
Thanks. Glad you liked it.
We were just curious as to how you tune the reeds. Such a meticulous process all round!
They look like bought in pre-tunerd (diatonic) accordion reeds - probably from Italy...
How about Mozart's K 356 on the Anglo?
So that's where concertinas come from.
It's OK, but it's a concertina shaped diatonic accordeon - concertinas have individual reeds and chambers tuned to the size of the reeeds...
Robert Burgess Some pirate have one.
awesome!!!
Why not a 40 Button C/G Anglo Chromatic LMH version?
Tried to contact Anthony but still haven't got a reply yet. I always want to have a concertina like this. Awsome video!
A Quintuple Reed 130 Key Chemnitzer will rock
Albert Nechanicky was quite a Musical Genius
Splitting a double edge safety razor and holding it in an xacto handle? Gonna have to try that trick.
What was the 1st song being played & the 2nd one?
Could you post a version of this without the music? I love the shop sounds!
Many thanks for the comment. I have just uploaded a new version just uploaded with the middle section of music removed - as requested by a few people. See if you prefer that.

I'm not sure if this question is out of place for a traditional concertina crafter; Has anyone ever experimented with putting saxophone reeds in a concertina?
Yes , Anthony makes these for sale. Based in UK. see his website www.apjmusic.co.uk
Where can someone buy components such as the reeds from? I assume you dont also need to make them by hand?
Impressive indeed.
This is fantastic. Do you ever take commissions??

Where do you get those white things with the yellow rectangles?
It's quite a complicated project. How long does it take you to make a concertina?
Roland Scales I takes several weeks but you better contact Anthony and ask him. I made the video.

How long did it take you to create this concertina?
