I miss when Nintendo advertisements were edgy.
Toad getting into a car crash and needing surgery in Mario kart is one of the best advertisements ever
sauce
I loved the commercial where the mouse f*cked a gameboy micro
Fun fact! In real life, Ogopogo is actually a Canadian lake monster. This cryptid originates from native people’s folklore and is said to inhabit Lake Okanagan in British Columbia.
i live in bc and i didt even know so thank you
@@TheMissSerena Sure thing!
Every single ad here is gold, you can tell they had a lot of fun making them
That long, slow zoom in on Lanky Kong at the end. Brilliant.
Jon's DK impression is gonna make me miss him a hundred times more. Good luck to him wherever he decides to go next!
Jon's leaving?!
@@MumboMod Yeah he's going somewhere else in February.
I just subscribed here and he’s off again!??!
@@Koops2245 Good Vibes Gaming :)
"Baby I want Klonoa" made me laugh out loud. I love this ad so much
"But Susan, I have Klonoa" is an AMAZING joke. It really is like a meme format
I sometimes feel like this Nintendō company that overseas fans talk about/characterize in certain ways/are nostalgic about/are angry at is a completely different entity from the company that I know in Japan - which I find is interesting. Overseas subsidiaries seem to have high degree of autonomy regarding things like public relations.
It's because of American social issues in the 80s/90s which forced NoA into being especially "family friendly"/censorious. Japan has different values and taboos than America.
@@napoleonfeanor but... these ads seemed like the polar opposite of that very sentiment.
With Wario in the thumbnail, it’s a good time to mention that this year marks the thirtieth anniversary of Wario’s debut in Super Mario Land 2. Nintendo won’t do anything for this but it would be nice if there was something like a Mario and Wario Land collection on Switch for the occasion, though I’m not expecting anything since getting my hopes up will only lead to disappointment.
Wario World 2
@@Stratilex I’d like to see a sequel to that, since the original was flawed but it had a lot of potential
RIP yellow Wario games.
You should do the TV commercials next. They used to be so much more interesting.
"We are Nintendo. You cannot beat us!"
I'll never forget the the Yoshi's Island ad... It was kinda traumatic as a kid. ua-cam.com/video/Z0E2lmgLF_k/v-deo.html
@@zedgathegreat9122 That's what i was talking about lol, it was traumatic for me, makes my stomach hurt, i think that's why i barely tolerate movies with body horror.
@@zedgathegreat9122 There was this ad about the first Mario Party game... I was confused and scared when I saw the cops taking Mario lmao I was 4 or 5 years old when that aired.
They need to look at the Mario Party 4 one
I like the original Smash Bros commercial with the mascots that start fighting. It was funny and conveyed what the game was about.
I love how some of these ads are so crazy that I can't tell whether the people making them knew nothing about the games they were advertising or if they simply were genius for giving young players new layers to their imagination.
But a few also look like they were simply ashamed of the actual game and lied to get interest from their potential costumers.
Classic stuff. Also loved the constant zoom on that S-Tier Kong at the end.
7:38 Thank you for the slow zoom here. Don't think I could go on living the rest of my life without it.
Jon may be leaving in February, but don’t worry they are gonna replace him with Donkey Kong.
I wouldn't argue that the fact we've "moved on" from ads like these is necessarily a good thing. Say what you will about some of them, what I admire about them is that they're goals were to be funny and provocative. Like you touched on at the end of the video, they're like memes. Humour and surreal images like that definitely fit in with modern day. Some of them are infamous, sure, but I like that they weren't trying to pander to children and contribute to a perception that you should grow out of gaming after childhood.
The gross-out humor was in full force back in the day.
On one hand (back when I was collecting Nintendo Power, mid 2000's) I knew I wasn't the target audience, but at the same time, I felt connected to the culture.
Today's ads don't hold a candle to the old gaming stuff TBH. They aren't nearly as fun to me.
Klonoa’s advertising was almost on the same level as earthbound, where more than anything they detracted people from getting the game. There is a cardboard cutout ad that’s just a render of Klonoa with the text, “A game weirder than your sister.”
In a way, I wouldn't mind to have some of these weird ads again. Even the phrase "so and so's biggest adventure" is oddly nostalgic
Isn't Ogopogo a sea serpent in western Canada native mythology?
Yes it was said to have lived in Okanagan Lake in the Okanagan valley, British Columbia.
Him: "But Susan, I have Doshin the Giant."
Her: "I want Doshin the Giant."
I’m going to need a poster of that Crash trying on gold speedos image framed. I need to put in my entrance way for every house guest to witness!
I want to hear the unedited footage of Alex discussing Rayman.
A small thing, but it is so great that all of you have interesting camera angles and it's not just three 0º front on shots
Friendly reminder that there are OFICIAL German comics of Wario making deals with the DEVIL and Yoshis being RACIST. Have a good day :)
epic
Really? Could you please name the comic where Yoshi displays his racism, I‘m very interested.
First it was racism and then tax evasion? Yoshi really is the worst Nintendo character.
Based
That Yoshi comic what it does is show the reality of racism, with the Yoshis being ignorant and mistreating the black Yoshi. It also shows how those Yoshis begin to leave their ignorance behind and apologize. The comic is actually anti-racist. But hey, it's more "funny" to say "Yoshi being racist" right? ...
I wish you three would just turn these group videos into a weekly podcast (and add Kate!) Love when y’all do a group chat!
One ad I remember clearly from Nintendo Power was for Mario Kart DS. It was a guy with a cardboard sign on a street corner asking for money, and the sign said "Why lie, I need Mario Kart."
I was kinda surprised this was presented without the 90s console wars context! Sega deffo directly influenced the weirder Ninty ones iirc
On the topic of the DS era, I have a t-shirt the Nintendo rep gave us when I worked at game stop that said "touching is good" in fuzzy, felt lettering.
Jon’s DK impression sounds like Goofy trying to do a DK impression 😂
I remember the day I received the last issue of nintendo power, I miss getting those in high-school. Makes me smile at the thought even though I'm saddened by their discontinuation.
I always enjoy the battle tanks adds in Nintendo Power where they are blasting through the teletubbies and OZ
I still have at least 2 of the scratch and sniff cards from the EarthBound strategy guide.
My favorite three amigos on UA-cam. Keep doing your thing bros👊🏼
I just randomly remembered seeing the Bling Bling King Wario add today from a magazine years ago. Then here it comes as the front of the video. What is reality?
I've got the Wavebird ad you are referring to in some issue of Game Informer somewhere, I will have to take a look.
I miss this experimental phase from Nintendo (Majora's Mask, Wario World, Contact, Mother series, etc).
Why is the Klonoa ad so true to modern meme culture tho
29:15 That zoom in of Lankey Kong needed to continue, right into his eyes, right to bottom of his tortured soul.
When were you planning on telling us that you hired Donkey Kong?
Man this brought back some memoires!
the 90s was different....being a sega kid, ill never forget that genesis ad with the chick in lingerie in the foreground; guy playing genesis on bedroom TV: "I remember when he couldn't keep his hands off of me."
I would have liked some comparison to today’s ads. I mean no one really sees print ads anymore so I’m not sure if things have really changed in that area. Most ads people see these days are video based or embedded in a web page. The format is too different to do the same sort of thing you are looking at here. Would love a follow up where you dive into today’s example of game ads. Are they just pure gameplay now? Do the static web page ads for games do anything new or different?
Can someone please give me the name of the song in the background at 2:00 . It sounds so familiar but I can’t find it anywhere.
Ogopogo is also the name of a Canadian folk monsters that is similar to the lach ness monster. It lives in the okanagan lake.
I know nothing about Final Fantasy, however I think I can explain the Ogopogo translation. You see, Ogopogo is a famous lake monster famous in the USA that seems to match the descripion of that summon.
I grew up in the 80s and 90s and I remember so many weird commercials
You guys rocks, any chance you’ll do a video about Cing and their games someday? Hotel Dusk Room 215, Last Window and Another/Trace Memory(plus its Wii sequel) were all amazing games.
Donkey Kong? More like Donkey JON
Jonkey Kong
How does Jon know exactly how Seth Rogen’s DK is going to sound? 😂
About thencruse humor... I once rented a game called Boogerman. It included burps, farts, digging in piles of poo for loot and of course, flicking boogers and hocking loogies. It was just, out of the ordinary and my brother and I had a cheap laugh from it all.
24:41 lol, smart to cut away from that
Classic Nintendo is 100% certified godlike soul.
New Nintendo is 100% soulless cashgrab.
0:55 That's a good Golden Sun plug right there Zion, keeping the remaster-wish spirit alive there.
10:15 how did crash put on his speedo with those huge shoes
Guitar hero had a thing where if you owned every previous copy of guitar hero and had the insert from the back of the case you could put in all the codes and get guitar hero van Halen before it came out. I beat guitar hero van Halen before guitar hero 5 was even out yet. They sent it to me in a cardboard sleeve. I'm surprised in 2009 they would still be okay with releasing a game so early but I was 15 and didn't know what the hell was going on
Gonna use But Baby I Have Klonoa as a pickup line at the bar next time
I am surprised boogerman didn't make this video
4:25 have you not listened to baby got back from sir mix alot
24:40 Yeah, he just has a levitating glans...
I kind of miss the commercials where they would have a real gorilla and then It shows gameplay and donkey kong then back to the gorilla doing something weird
The dead or alive ad is fine
I love those boktai games played three of em + lunar knights :)
1:22 is that Seth Rogen?
We are talking about 30 year old ads. They are clearly working.
It seemed like every 90's video game ad had the same either gritty or wAcKy text font to promote their games. It was a sign of the times, you see.
I haven’t seen the video yet. But I fully expect the “touching is good” ds ads. Truly a masterclass in marketing lmao
Forest Of Hope @ 11:56
Loved this video!!!
I remember that some of this ads would make its way to Latin America and i remember that they were so cool lmao t.t
Lanky at the end.... hahaha
When did these stop? Gradually with the end of print?
Whoa!
I would LOVE to see a video of you guys watching and reacting to classic game commercials.
I would want the reaction of a react and then reacting to that. AAaaaah! The empty air of yt react videos. One feels so empty inside…because you’ve basically watched absolutely NOTHING
9:20 lmao!
Jon sounds more like Yogi bear than DK 😂
"It's Crash' toughest adventure yet; the US healthcare system"
i guess its sort of that nickalodian error with slime and gross things being cool and punk pop style
Shock advertising gets shown around.
There was a whole woman tied to a mattress while a guy played a gameboy
@@lifespanofafry1534 but not better than half a car
alex looks just like i always thought he would what a chad
cant believe you didnt let zion know dogging means something COMPLETELY different here
These are amazing 👏🏻
Boy: I'm the red ranger!
Boy2: I'm the green Ranger!
Homeless man: I'm the Pac-man! Nom nom nom. Waka waka bitch.
Love hotels
Old SEGA ads are hilarious. Also look up one for Command and Conquer
I thought you were going to cover the time Nintendo invested in love hotels before getting into video games lol
am I the only one who think Alex's voice is perfect for yt videos?
And less spoilery. gods I hate how their trailers have been spoil sports as of late
I ripped out my teeth and I just got grounded…
So sad to be saying goodbye to -Jon- Donkey Kong. Honestly though it was impressive he worked for you guys in the first place
ZION! CAPT UNDERPANTS WAS ALSO THE FIRST THING I THOUGHT OF, WHAT EVEN IS GOING ON?????
Wait, did John just call Vegeta vegetable?
John Romero will make you his something.
we'll miss John
“Ads that insult the player that you can’t beat the game” that’s still very much a thing... on mobile gaming at least, I never understood ads that be like “this game is harder than it looks, you can’t beat it” like unless you’re a masochist who’d wanna play a game that’s supposedly too difficult? This is bad advertising imo, I see ads like this I be like “pass!”
Not really taunting people can work in your favour
6 more days . . .
missed opportunity to just do a Seth Rogan impression.
The 90's were all about being ironic and extreme. The word "extreme" or "Xtreme" was heard and seen everhwhere. It was annoying then, and it remains so now. But having lived through the era, I'm surprised anyone finds these shocking. To me, at worst they're annoying, and at best, they bring back some good memories.
Alex has to go shopping, and he will be looking at every store, with an scared look, looking for a giant Bandicoot with an small underwear.
Ok guys, question, do you remember the ad of Yoshi's Island with the person that exploded for eating too much? That ad made me want to vomit, one of the worst ad for one of the best games :(
Edit: This video was weirdly edited and it was clear that Alex was concerned and/or wanted to go to the bathroom, and i know that feel.
If that kid's baby teeth are worth that much, how much could I get for adult teeth?
you look kinda like brian bell from weezer
