This is an absolute lifesaver of a video. For anyone else who only sees "unassigned" kontakt tracks in the audio track input channels, try "saving the current output section state as default for... > VST", then deleting and reloading the instance of kontakt and M&M. Hopefully that should work and the input channels will come up with the new channel names!
Great tutorial Ryan! good job! For those who cant see the output at 4:03 of this video, be reminded that you need audio channels instead of midi channels. It happened to me because I created 8 midi channels instead of audio channels. Ryan stated clearly at the beginning of the video. I hope this would help those who are lost. :)
Oh my god, thank you so much. My peabrain was way too used to the stock drum VSTs in ableton and how how everything was just ready and easy to use, I couldnt for the life of me figure out how to get drums into separate tracks when I got GGD lol. Thanks brother!
Ok so ive figured out most of my issues. But Im having an issue with Ableton. At 4:05 in your video you go to able to select your stereo outs. When I go to select those I have a bunch of random non chronological options and a bunch of (Unassigned) outputs. Am I missing a step or is Ableton just being difficult?
@@drewhanson8335 I did! Although I can remember what I did to fix it, I just use the clean template now so I know if I fuck it up later I always have a fixed one XD
After multiple failed attempts like this I unloaded Kontact from the midi channel and started over. Works now. Followed advice from here support.native-instruments.com/hc/en-us/articles/210306865-How-to-Route-KONTAKT-to-Multiple-Outputs-in-Ableton-Live
What would you say to someone who uses one track to actually write the drums and when the parts complete you start mixing and adding separate tracks for each piece of the kit. Do I have to do this process again every time I want to start mixing or can I do both without changing much? Im new to the game and I know this is more of a demo tool but this is the best I have for my tracks when it comes to drums in the final master. Honestly, working with kontakt has been very confusing and its crazy to me that ggd hasn't put a single video of there software with ableton.
I personally just have a project with just this setup in it, so I can just drag and drop the group into whatever project I’m working on. So then I’ve got the plugin routed to all of the audio tracks already, I can go ahead and write the parts and then get to mixing without having to worry about routing it again!
Okay I'm wondering if I missed something here...on your GGD program you're seeing "Full kit, Kick, Snare, Toms, Cymbals, Settings, Groove Player, and About" But for me I'm only Seeing "Full Kit, Settings, Groove Player, and About" How do I get the instruments to pop up so I can individually select them and continue my routing process?
@@ranii771 Yeah, I think that's the reason that it's like that for us. One Kit Wonder doesn't have the same features as some of their other packs. I didn't really do my research before buying so I'm still trying to figure out how to use the software.
Craig Pascoe well the messed up part about it is that even if you did research on it, there isn’t even research to see lol idk why they did it like that, but you can kinda route ya stuff, if you click on that grey mixer button faders will pop up, and you can send ya sounds to the bud
this video is awesome and super helpful, would there be a chance to get a video of the mixing protocol some of the drums from this set up of GGD in ableton? that would be next level. Im getting super lost on where to go once the drums are written in.
Thanks for your great routing! I was completely lost. Well I just have one problem, there where it says ,,no input'' it starts from 3/4, than 5/6, so I cannot start with stereo 2, stereo 3, and so on... Do you know why? thanks a lot!
Hi, I've followed all of these steps but all of my routing is stuck in mono, overheads and everything. I'm using the GGD halpern pack and Kontakt is showing the output as stereo, but as soon as they hit the other tracks in ableton they're stuck in mono
in ableton, when i open the pull down menu to choose the outputs, theres no St.1, 2, 3 etc and only aux 1-4 and then unassigned. I have 1 midi track for kontakt, and then the rest are all audio tracks. confused.
Hunter Patterson someone else commented this link for the same problem and it helped me out support.native-instruments.com/hc/en-us/articles/210306865-How-to-Route-KONTAKT-to-Multiple-Outputs-in-Ableton-Live
I can't seem to get any more than 16 stereo outs in my drop down list. I've meticulously layed out everything in detail in Invasion, but only 16 channels show up in ableton. anyone have any tips?
The part where you change “post mixer” to stereo out 1-9, it’s not showing “stereo out” as an option. It just shows “post mixer” and two other options. What can I do?
Learning recording in ableton and can not figure out how to record GGD. Because it is the lite version I just want to record the drums as 1 channel rather than configure each drum. how can I do this?
Do I need to have separate tracks for the respective instruments (kick, snare, etc.) or can I just group the drums as one MIDI track (as I'm used to with Power Drumkit)? I'm kinda limited in regards to the track quantity in my DAW :/ ...
i think i figured that out. In the same boat with ableton live lite. just put the MIDI track on AUTO and press the little record button on the MIDI track itself. then go to the M&M settings panel where all the note mappings are for the MIDI. remember them or change them. Then just open the MIDI keyboard on ableton after you've loaded Kontant on that MIDI track (ctrl shift M). works for me. lmk. Depending on how your audio is routed (stereo or mono) i just output the MIDI audio to an audio track in stereo since it was only playing in one ear. idk I'm just figuring it out.
Thanks so much for this. I did everything you did in the video. I have everything routed but when I write some beat, I can’t hear anything when I play it. I can hear it on the piano roll, when I write it but when I hit play I hear nothing. What am I doing wrong?
This is so beyond helpful! I just have one question. Do you know how to route a midi controller to activate the drums? I can't seem to find the way since the sounds are so randomly placed on the keyboard. Any help is appreciated!
scratch that, still cant figure it out, i follow all the steps, i think how you initially created the tracks and grouped them has me stumped i get all the to the end then i start to choose the inputs and channels and theyre not matching up to what you did in your video.
Thanks for the quick tutorial! one question though, I use the Push 2 controller to program my drums. Even though the drums are in separate tracks, could I still play them all together like the usual drum rack on a 16 pad controller?
I’ve been having a problem using modern massive drums. I have the Matt Halpern pack originally saved in my Kontakt but for some reason when I try to use M&M, it just won’t sense any of the "mics" I think? I even deleted the old Kontakt and tried this method you did here but still the inputs would not pick up the signal on those channels.
@@RyanDevenney and which ones do you group? all 9? or just 8 audio tracks. thats what's got me confused, when i get to the end the inputs and channels are not coming out correctly
How come the Kick is a midi track though? Doesn't make sense - why can't you have a separate Kontact channel, and have a channel for Kick... then the input of all the other tracks wouldn't be Kick, but something like Kontact. I'm a noob though.
So I had a question is I'm inspired by many artists like Tom Misch and watched your Tom Misch esque series. And love how you're able to go from one end of the music spectrum to the other and make it good. But my question how do you study the artist in order to make a song similar to theirs? I myself want to make a song in the style of Tom Misch with maybe an added mixture of another artist I have in mind.
Well fuck me.......... I started making separate tracks for each one. Then copying the whole drum track and deleting all other notes except for what that track is designated for. Fuck me........

for this to work you need to make the routing default, remove and re-add kontakt. Otherwise Ableton does not update the routing.
