Listening to this stuff today, it can be hard to appreciate the fact that back in the early 70s there really was NO music that sounded at all like this. Today...from hip-hop to house to techno and all of their sub-permutations it is so ubiquitous. Real pioneers and much of the electronics had not been developed yet. The avant-garde of the time was not really interested in anything so repetitive...anything you could actually dance to. Like GOOD modern architecture (a rare thing) these guys could somehow manage to find and spin poetry in mechanization, simplicity and repetition in clear contrast with Western “progressive rock” of the era.
Yeah prob not even by them in 1970. They are def one of the greatest pioneers in electronic music (if not the greatest), but they did not exist in a vacuum. From the dawn of the first commercially made electronic instruments, there were plenty of other electronic bands alongside them who were also pioneers.
Kraftwerk's impact on modern music is right up their with The Beatles and other seminal bands and musicians. I know very well they didn't invite electronic music but they almost single handily created electro pop music. "Since then every studio has a synth" As I once heard someone put it.
This documentary was made the same year Kraftwerk first toured Australia - what a privilege to attend their concerts then and in the years since. Vale Florian Schneider - you were much admired in your lifetime.
I wonder if the whole show was recorded? I would love to see a perfect copy of it. Kraftwerk at the height of their powers here. Kling Klang fully operational.
I had a friend/co-worker years ago who used the Speak& Spell in a song but was unable to release it because the toy co. would not allow him to!!! Corporations killing art!!!
I like this live version of Pocket Calculator. You think about it - Pocket Calculator was made 1981.. it sounds sort of influenced by some Brit New Wave like Gary Numan in 1979
A lot more people are listening in 2017 than in 197*. Their fan base seems to grow exponentially every couple of years. Not to mention all of the artists & genres they have influenced. Hell, you could say they are literally responsible for the electro genre! Now they're even influencing people (that are too ignorant/lack the musical perspective) without them even knowing it! Stands as a testament to how deeply ingrained their oeuvre has become in our collective 'musical unconscious'. :)
When the real people are on stage doing Pocket Calculator, isn't it sooo much better than the 'Roboter' stage, that seemed to stick too much until the very end. The human aspect makes it so alive. Is that irony, or post-ironic-art?
RIP Florian Schneider. Thanks man❤️
RIP FLORIAN.

Last year i saw Karl Bartos walking along the street here in Düsseldorf. I love his melodys so much, he is a genius to me.
What a legend.
Feel so lucky I got to see them in 1981.
That's incredible. Which show?
If it wasn't for ktaftwerk we wouldn't have the music and sounds we have today, the originator's, legends in the field.......
So they're to blame!
@@wiseonwords not fair
Godfathers of electronic music and decades ahead of their time!

That on stage set up and sounding was the best at their concerts of the eighties.
This documentary was made the same year Kraftwerk first toured Australia - what a privilege to attend their concerts then and in the years since. Vale Florian Schneider - you were much admired in your lifetime.
I would have loved to have seen them here, alas my work back then didn't like up with their concerts. You were blessed to see them.
"hi, we are kraftwerk n we came to rock the house....now grab yo calculators!"

50 years on and we still have much to learn from the masters.
RIP Florian :(
Ruhe in Frieden, Herr Schneider.
A complete german documentary. How wonderful!
I wonder if the whole show was recorded? I would love to see a perfect copy of it. Kraftwerk at the height of their powers here. Kling Klang fully operational.
Bitteschön, soviel Zeit muß sein, till the end. Dankeschön
Gracias por compartir
"Uno, due, tre, quatro (with one "t") " A tribute to the italian numbers by the wizards. Thank you
They speak in at least 6 languages in "Numbers", relax.
Gutes inspiration für Deusch zu lernen!
This documentary was made by austrian TV station ORF in 1981
Really History! Kraftwerk forever!
Awesome , even in bad quality it's great
They moved around a lot more back then.Fully robotic nowadays. Which must take a bit of self discipline for them to resist dancing.
I was there! Düsseldorf 1981 👌🏽
Wow. Looks like Kraftwerk: “Live at NASA Mission Control, Houston”
Eat your heart out, Daft Punk!!
IN THE BEGINNING THERE WAS KRAFTWERK.
It began in Düsseldorf!
@Benji ...and all the other techno bands bowed to thee.
Legendary,
Where can I find the better resolution with english translate? :(
I saw a top-quality BBC documentary a while ago, with excerpts of performances that you see here.

I wish someone could dub this :(
Same :(
It`s not an german documentary,it`s austrain, filmed in Vienna on 21.11.1981.
So cool! :)
Where are they playing in the opening sequence?
I was never sure if they weren't both ARTISTIC and AUTISTIC? At 3:35, it looks like they are making music with "Speak and Spell" toys
No,they are using a primitive version of text to speech synthesizer
I had a friend/co-worker years ago who used the Speak& Spell in a song but was unable to release it because the toy co. would not allow him to!!! Corporations killing art!!!
Genial
Klasse Doku !!!
super..
I like this live version of Pocket Calculator. You think about it - Pocket Calculator was made 1981.. it sounds sort of influenced by some Brit New Wave like Gary Numan in 1979

George Mortimer Always still listening-now 2017. Been listening since 1978. Kraftwerk are THE Masters. #Fact #Respect #KlingKlang
Many people. Especially since their music has been sampled like crazy.

Yes I like that pocket calculator part too.
Now back to computing fun and machine language.
