3 Alternatives to a Magic Ring/Circle! (Easy Tutorial)

- Do you struggle to make the Magic Ring/Circle when starting your crochet? In this tutorial I show you how to make a ring using 3 different methods that (in my opinion) are easier, less fiddly, and more secure than the "normal" method of making a Magic Ring. The first method is using the first chain instead of a magic ring, the second is to make the tradition chain ring, and the third is my own way of doing a double magic ring. Each of these methods has it's pros and cons that I show in this video also, and compare each method side by side. I also offer recommendations of when it is advantageous to use one technique over another.

You just saved me with that 1st one!! I will NEVER do another "magic ring" the standard (frustrating) way!! You're right about it being fiddly. Thank you!!
Glad I could help!
Yes, I've stiff hands and it's so much easier!
I hate magic rings so thanks 4 your 1st method xx
why isn't this going viral? this is an actual lifesaver.
This is wonderful! I’m 63 and have been crocheting since I was about 5. All three of your techniques are game changers. Thank you so much for sharing!
You are mirroring my life!! I watched this with my mouth open, lol. I guess Grandma didn’t know doodley squat. Genius!!!
As a knitter, I have found crocheting to be extremely difficult, but I love the look. I am clumsy with the hook and find the magic ring method to be a nightmare. Thank you for these three tips. They look easy peasy!
can i just say i watched LITERALLY 16 different videos on how to make a magic ring yesterday and this was the only video i was able to follow/understand. so happy. tysm!!!!
You might have saved my sanity! Thank you! Thank you!
Glad I could help!
This is a true gem of information. I was just fiddling (unsuccessfully) with a magic ring. These suggestions are wonderful.
So glad this was helpful for you. I still can’t get the “normal” magic ring to work for me after years of trying
I thought your speed and teaching methods were quite perfect.
I’ve never had trouble using the regular magic ring, but I found the alternatives very interesting.
I just recently began TRYING to learn the magic ring but have been so frustrated with it I was ready to just give up and keep starting my projects the old way with just a slip knot. Number 3 is going to change the way I start everything that has to be started in the round. Thanks for sharing these great methods.
I love magic rings, who the heck hates them? I never thought anyone would have a problem with them. They're magic!
Well, I’m literally ten years old so I need this video
I am so glad to know that others think the magic ring is fiddly. While I love amigurumi, I delay new projects because I have to go back and figure out the magic ring every time. tfs!
I forget it every time too!
LOVE THIS!!! Shared it out on my Community Tab!
Hooray, the magic circle. I know I can make a not mess up. I’ll be doing number one because I like the looks of it over the other two. Thank you thank you thank you. Hugs and prayers for what you do.
Fantastic! I never could get the magic ring until now. Thank you so much for sharing!
I've only done the cross over method. I have seen the double magic ring recently. I feel like method one is the easiest looking....until I've learned the magic ring, I've always done the chain with a slip stitch method. Thanks for the alternatives!!
That is fantastic! I can get off my meds now.
🤣🤣
How fascinating. I prefer the first method but quite honestly I’ve never had any problems making a magic ring. It isn’t hard at all. I didn’t know people had a problem with it. Pity you didn’t show how to do that way as well for a comparison. You have a nice teaching style. 😊
I do the regular magic ring. I don't understand why people think it's so difficult. I've also never had one come loose. I don't know what the X or crossover is. I've never seen that method.
3rd one is for me!! Thank you 😍
I like Method 1. It looks so much neater,
The first method is still a magic ring, as when you loosened the end, it was able to pull like a normal magic ring. Second medod is the most secure. Thanks for the video and ideas.
I like the three of them and as you say depends a lot on what material you are using 👍
finally my prayers has been answered , thankyou soo much it saved my hobby and interest in crocheting as i was trapped in learning magic ring for so long. Thankyou so so so much. Keep posting.
You are welcome 😊
Wonderful! I am revisiting this tutorial and just wanted to say I used Method 3, double magic ring, for my last project after having the single double ring fail in a project when I washed it. Just one block that I was fortunately able to mend before giving as a baby gift. Glad I discovered the problem before giving it as a gift. Greetings from sunny Queensland this Anzac Day.🇦🇺
So glad this was helpful for your project. I find that even with the double ring they can still fail, so I tend to make sure my end is woven in so much to reinforce it. Happy ANZAC day for last week (I had to look it up!)
This is interesting and it's good to have options. I personally use the popular "X" wrap on top of my 2 fingers but it took me forever to remember how to do it. I'm definitely going to give your alternate methods a try. Thanks!❤
Thank you. I know how to make a magic ring but it is always good to have more than one solution to a problem. I'm familiar with 2nd and 3rd methods but the first one is new to me.
I’m glad this helped and I agree about having more than one solution to a problem. It’s like having different tools in a tool kit!
I love magic ring, but always struggle to make them if I have to repeat the granny squares. However your first method was so easy & straight forward. Thank you for this tutorial. ❤😊
Loved your tutorial
It took me a while but I have cracked the magic ring puzzle.
I started a crochet group a few years ago and a couple of my ladies want to be able to do magic rings as they are used a lot on things like toys. I'll share this to our Facebook page and save it to go through with those who don't use UA-cam.
Thank you for this, I've wracked my brains to think of alternatives 🎉
Ooo yay I’m so glad this will be helpful for your crochet group
Outstanding video! Thank you.
These are all great! Your teaching is spot on!
Thankyou so much 😊
Genius! Previously, whenever I had to do a magic ring I struggled-but not any more!!
Yay so glad this helped. I still cannot get the normal magic ring to work for me 🤣🤣
I've been crocheting for years and I'm still learning so much! I stick to a couple of different methods, but I'll definitely try the double magic ring. I find the magic ring fiddly and have never got to grips with it!
This is BRILLIANT!!! Already a subscriber but clicked the like button & am leaving a comment to help get this into more people's recommended feed! 😍❤
Awww Thankyou so much for the support ❤️
Great video, super easy to understand, and good to see the comparison in the different methods.
Glad it was helpful!
@@meemamakesfor method 1, does the chain count as the first double crochet? Thank you
I have always done a double magic ring since I first learned about magic rings. It is so much more secure.
Thanks. Only, that I do not make 3 chain, like a first stich. I do not like it, I prefer to make 1DC instead of.
I liked your "magic double circle".
Thanks a lot. 🙌👌👏
I have amigurumi projects to do using chenille yarn. Magic loop is impossible. Your video just popped up in my feed when I desperately needed it. Going to try #1 first. Thank you for saving my sanity & my grandkids gifts💜
Im working on making multiple flowers in only a few colors then using strips/bands in a stockinette knit stitch to shape the outfit with the various color matching flowers filling put the piece. Definitely a fall navy blue dark not summer time
Thank you so much for sharing this!❤
I've never been able to get the hang of the magic ring. This is a game changer for me! Thanks foe sharing. ❤
You are so welcome!
Thanks for sharing. It has helped me.
So grateful I found this video! You are a fantastic teacher, I actually understood everything you explained, so many videos are confusing in their explanations. You have a talent, and your voice is lovely to listen to while following along! I will be watching more of your tutorials. Thank you!!!
That first method is the one I will use from now own. Thank you so much!
You save my life. Thank you very much. I always struggle with the magic ring. I never know .
There were 3 ways. Thanks for sharing
Glad it helped!
These are great! I'll definitely be giving the first one a go, thank you 😊
Grateful for your tutorial!!
Thank you SO MUCH! This has helped me tremendously. I really appreciate learning about these methods!😊
I like the 1st method! Definitely going to try it!
Hello, your video popped up and the first one is my favorite, 🤩 thank you ❣️
THANK YOU FOR THE EASIEST WAY TO GO! I've always screwed mine up. 😫 I, needed this!😃
number 3 is just what i was looking for.
Great lesson! TY
Awesome, thank you. I’ve only ever done the slip knot kind but I like how neat the last one is!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, so easy to understand the way you are teaching.
You are a genius ! Thank you !
Thanks for the tutorrial
Super cool! Can’t wait to try these out. Number #1 is my fave without even trying it! Thanks! oxoxox
Helloooo, new Subbie here due to thus wonderful video alone! While I don't mind executing the magic ring the final method you show is my new favorite. Looking forward to more tutorials from your channel and viewing older ones. I’ve been crocheting for 53 years and yes you CAN teach an old girl a new trick. HA! 😂
Thank you! It make a much neater look 😊
I’m so happy this worked for you ❤
I LOVE method 3. Thank you so much. You are right I just hated magic rings. And I’m not at all into amigurumi so I’m ok with method 3 it’s easiest
Thank you very much ❤
Thank you!
Toller Tipp vielen Dank
Brilliant!
Thank you, thank you! I could never get the magic ring to turn out! I just tried your first method and it works!!
Brilliant, thank you!
You're very welcome!
Thank you❤
Thank you.
Thank you
I used to do the 1st one, but now I prefer the 3rd method, lol! Thanks!
Thank you! I hate magic ring and always feel awkward and that I have to be retrained to do it. I like the sound of #3 for me.
I always use the double magic circle
I have struggles with the magic ring for years. Thank you.❤❤
Yay I’m so glad this video helped ❤
Nice tips, I can do a magic ring just fine, but can see how each method has its advantages. I did not realize that the chain method was more secure but it makes sense. 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Ty! I always have trouble, causing me to start the ring over because of bulkiness in the center… this will help me so much!
Happy to help!
#1 is going to save me from a lot of yarn burn from all the magic rings in my projects. I can make a crochet yoyo blanket now.
Wow I admire the commitment for a yo-yo blanket!
Next, use the stacked sc in place of the turning chain. It looks much better
I actually use #3 but i like #1
I LOVE the double magic ring! I use it whenever the pattern calls for magic ring. Except i make it over 2 fingers. Then the ring is big enough for me to hold open with 2 fingers, which makes it easier for me to hold things taut.
I do this with chunky yarn, itherwise it’s too small
I love how easy the first part is, but I wish, as a beginner that the part where you start to use the magic ring could be slower or with a little more explanation.
Can you do a left handed version?
I have always made a slip knot, chain 4-5, join, leave a tail, then when I put the first round I do the stitches over the tail, when I have the round finished pull the tail and va-la! No hole!
Please find your settings icon on top right corner of the screen.
Go to play back speed, click on it, and make the tutorial the slower speed that enabled you to see and hear at the pace that you enjoy.😊
I use the 3rd method EVERY time. But I chain 1 and tighten it down THEN stitch into the center. After getting the required number of stitches I slide them over so I have more room for cinching it up.
Such a great tip!
You know those Woobles crochet kits? They come with the magic ring and the first six loops already done for you, the reason being that "magic rings are too hard for first-timers to learn." I disagree and wish they hadn't put that idea into people's heads and had instead, put how to make one in the video instructions. Your first technique is genius and will undoubtedly save me a lot of frustration.
I saw those and thought it was strange they start for you! Glad that technique helped!
@@meemamakes And when I say the first six "loops" I mean it. They clearly do the first 6 sc and then frog the yarn so the stitches make little visible loops. As if it's too hard to say here, put the stitches here.
If you tie the slip knot the other way - so you can tighten by pulling on the short, non-working end, it makes many things easier.
Fab tip!
Really helpful, thank you! One question though - why are you using US terms?
Glad this was helpful. I just prefer US terms as they seem more logical to me. I can read and write in both though - all my patterns are available in UK terms as well as US 😊
I’m curious why you think the traditional method of creating a magic ring is “fiddly,” especially when compared to your method 3.
Of the three you demonstrated, I like the first method the best, but I’ll likely continue to do my magic rings the traditional way because I don’t find them bothersome at all, and the center hole completely disappears when the yarn end is pulled.
But thank you for showing alternative ways to achieve a similar result…always good to learn something new! 😉
It's subjective and there's a few different methods to do the "traditional" one. And I definitely find the one where you make a cross fiddly, and it likes open up over time in heavy use items so I don't recommend it. I am of the opinion that there is no right or wrong in crochet, just preference for different techniques.
I don't do any of these 😮mine are (in my opinion) easier 😊
Great tutorial. I am curious why you are using US terminology instead of UK?
Because I prefer it! I can read and write UK terms too though and all my patterns are available in both 😊
😲
Hi, I have a really stupid question: for method 1, how many chains do you make before crocheting in the ring? Is there a set number? I cannot make a magic ring to save my life so fingers crossed on this one! Any guidance would be much appreciated and thanks!
The amount of chains depends on what you’re making and how big or small you want your circle. You could chain 2 or 20. Usually you’re your patterns will tell you what to start with. Different size yarns will also make a difference in how chains many you use. Hopes this helps you. 🙂
Nice 🧶🧶
🌹🙏🌺🌻
I’ve been doing this way easier
You did a double crochet what about a single crochet stitch?
You can use these methods for any crochet stitch. You would just adjust your starting chain length. Eg for using method 1 for single crochet you’d start with a chain of 2
Then second method is used to other types of projects. Just saying so y'all be careful and don't get too used to stuff without knowing what it's created for. Because after getting used seeing it done for others purposes could be confusing. I really recommend learning to doing different starting knots/circles/chains as they should be done.
Cool video. Just saying is mixing definitions and processes. That won't be beneficial when y'all start trying to upgrade y'all crocheting skills
The first one is literally a magic ring. Just a different way of making it
Your yarn is too good. I dnt GT nice one here.
