I saw it on Tuula Maaria's crochet channel years ago...she's a great crochet coach from Finland. Many, many useful hacks! "Crochet with Tuula Maaria", check her out!
This is called chain plying or Navajo plying when you spin a yarn from fibre. Instead of having 3 spools of yarn (all with slightly different lengths) you only need one and won't have any spools with leftover bits.
I make my own stitch markers or stitch savers. Those come in super handy when a project needs to go into time out. I put a letter bead on the marker. I went to a local farmer's market, there was a gentleman there with a crochet stand. He put skeins of yarn into clean 2 liter bottles, he cut the bottoms of the bottles put the skein in, taped up the bottom ran the working yarn through the bottle opening.
@Rande I'm sorry, it was after reading through your comment that I stopped trying to figure out how he got the yarn in the bottle. That is a brilliant idea!!
I cannot express to you the amount of freaking out and fan-girling I am experiencing over the hack to make worsted weight yarn bulky. 😂😂😂 I want so badly to buy bigger yarn because all I have is worsted weight, but I have so much untouched yarn that needs to be used before I can justify a purchase lol. Now I can make the projects I’ve been dying to make and it’s SO EASY!! Thank you so much for sharing, this is exactly the kind of hack I needed!! 😍✨
Yayyyy!!! 🥳🥳🥳 I'm so glad you liked that one! And same, I've got so much worsted weight lying around it's hard to justify buying more. Not only does it make chunkier projects possible, it's also a great stash buster!
Exactly the same. This will literally change my quality of life! I bought a bunch of yarn for a project that never got started and I'm stuck with it because it's too small to use for the big blankets I now do. Thank you!
I enjoy making blankets, anything wider than 2 ft. here is my savior, after I get almost a foot high, I accordion fold the blanket about 3-5 inches wide, thicker the yarn, wider the fold, then tie the bundle, I used scrap yarn, go around 2 times and tie, so now you have a bundle on your lap, the working edge opens like a fan, and as you work your Blanket, keep tying as it gets longer, I like doing this as that my cat helps me, she can not lay on it, it stays clean, can travel with it, Bags up much easier. I enjoy your shows.
Wish I would have known about the “bulky” hack when I made a Snoopy Christmas wall hanging for my son. I worked with only 2 strands, but two balls of yarn. Could you please make a video with a hack for two strands?
So there's not really an equivalent version of the 3ply/3strand hack to make it only 2 ply/2 strand. However, when I want to double up on the same type of yarn, I first use my yarn winder to make the yarn into a cake. Then, I can easily work from the center strand and the outer strand of the cake at the same time to double up. It's a lot less tangly than working with two skeins, but do note it's a pain to unravel!
OMG!!! This was fantastic, I immediately subscribed to this girl, and I don't subscribe often. Awesome!!!! @craftersautonomous, How do I save this actual video to come back to it over and over??
Awww you are so kind! Here's a link to a Google article about saving UA-cam videos - support.google.com/youtube/answer/56101?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid They explain it a little better than if I were to try to type it out haha
Omg!… this is going to be so great for straight edges on a coaster. My coasters always were a little unsatisfying square, but not pretty this will make a huge difference. Love that hack. Also, the triple strand is great.
Question With the purple and green round things Why wouldn't you make it a spiral and close it with a ss ? I'm just wondering. If its for a coaster that's what I do then add an edge no seam. That way it doesn't matter which stitch you use. Just say" in I've also been crocheting since 69" Liked your Idea of tripling the yarn!!! Crochet for the Ages!!!!
It's simply a personal preference kinda thing! Whether I spiral or join my rounds depends on what I'm working on. The two main scenarios where I join each round verses spiraling are 1. I want an easier time counting stitches and don't want to use a stitch marker (so basically when I want to be lazy hahaha) and 2. Sometimes my spiraled projects seem to get a bit of an uneven bump where I join the round. While there are ways to minimize it, sometimes I just prefer the look of the finished round where I join each round versus spiraling. But again, these are all just personal preferences, and I'm all for everyone going with the method they like best! Also, that is absolute goals you've been crocheting for over 50 years!!! I hope I can say the same one day!
For filling in a missed stitch, I do a double crochet to fill the single and triple to fill a double, ect. BUT I go through the v st of current row and under the v for the st I missed. This makes for a flatter work. Try and see which way you like best. Thanks for all the great tips. Have subscribed and watched three of these so far.
Thank you for the hacks and “forgiving” mistakes ❤wow…this was so informative and interesting. Your voice is pleasant to listen to and you explain it great and go at a comfortable speed. Happy crocheting ❤🧶
The fill in the skip stitch, genius! I've done doubling up my yarn before but that was a nice hack. I think you've shown the alternative double crochet before on a turn project. Y'all😂
I am fairly new to crocheting and am so glad I found your videos this morning! Your hacks have been so helpful!! You explain everything so well. You’ve got a new fan here!
All 5 hacks are so useful. My favorite is the 3 strands, it's just brilliant. I was debating if I should 3 balls of yarn for a project, but worries that I may not finished the yarn at the same time, then I ended up with 3 small balls of left over yarns. Or the other way around. Now I can get the extra yarn as needed. Thank you so much for putting this together. Answered so many questions for a beginner crocheter like me. 🙂
I'm so glad I saved you from making 3 balls of yarn! I did that for a project years ago before I learned this hack and IT WAS A NIGHTMARE 😂 Thanks so much for watching!
I love all these tips except the one where you missed a stich. It's a clever tip but I would never be able to live with myself if I just patched it up, even tho it would save me time and energy having to undo my work. Kudos to you tho for finding a new idea for fixing your work, it's ingenious, it's just not something my horrible perfectionist nature would allow me to actually do, and then live peacefully with myself afterwards. The tip I especially love, is the one where you used a loop in the wool to change a single thickness of yarn into a thicker one. What a clever idea! I am new to your channel but I think I'm utterly hooked, pun intended, on your videos. Thank you for posting these tips and tricks, they are very helpful. God bless you
Thanks for sharing your perspective! And I totally get about not being able to live with the knowledge there's an error. I tend to be a perfectionist myself, but crafting and creative things are the one area I'm pretty good at letting go of my need for perfection. Of course, I likely wouldn't use the filling in hack if it were for a commissioned project. But I've found it allows me to actually finish projects versus putting them in a permanent time out because I don't want to unravel 😂 So glad to have you here and thanks for watching! God bless.
Thanks for the straight edge hack! I always have trouble with the SC stitch edge being uneven. Love it. Also the hack for turning 1 strand into bulky is amazing. That is wonderful because when buying bulky there usually aren't many yards in the skein and you wind up paying a lot more for more skeins that you need.
I love this hack! However, when I use multiple yarns, I just place each ball/skein in a bowl or flower pot. I don’t have any tangles when I do this. ❤❤❤
Hi!, everyone calls me Betty. I always thought my single crochet edges looked kind of funky. Your hack will take care of that problem. Thanks for sharing.
Hi, Betty! Glad to have you here! I've never been a fan of my single crochet edges either. The traditional way of working always left me wanting a cleaner look, and this hack has helped me neaten my edges a lot.
I wish I could claim credit for coming up with the idea, but one of my subscribers told me about it! 😄 I wish I had been able to find the comment where someone explained it to me because I wanted to give them a shoutout in the video. But unfortunately I couldn't find it.
I've got two videos you might like! First is an older video showing how to work in the round with double crochet - ua-cam.com/video/SnICzpWvX6g/v-deo.html And then here's a more recent (and better quality haha) video about making single crochet coasters - ua-cam.com/video/9j5LQbqC7cc/v-deo.html Also with both of these, you can opt for a magic ring if that's your preference!
Totally enjoyed this! Your hacks have taught me so much and they're so easy. My projects are turning out so much more precise and professional looking. Thank you❤😊
Loved the photo hack-- I used to forget the size hook and end up starting all over! Now, thanks to this video, (and the fact that I got smart, and I started keeping a Crocheting Journal) i wrote down what name crochet book/magazine the pattern/projects I was working on came from, or if it were my designer original, including the stitches i was using. I included who the project was for, including their name, address and phone number! I also included the name brand of the crochet hook/hooks, hook sizes, yarn brand, yarn style, yarn weight, yards per skein, dye lot/color and how many skeins it takes to complete the pattern/project. Yay! No more guessing, no more mismatched, misplaced projects!
Ooh, I bet the results with self striping yarn would be really cool! Especially if all the loops were formed at the same point in the striped pattern. If you try it out, I'd love to hear how it turns out!
I love the first hack! About 5 years ago I started a Mile a Minute afghan for my granddaughter in July. After about 6 strips were complete, I put it away for a while. Then I picked it back up weeks later and finished the remaining 6 strips. It was only when I got them all out to join them that I realized I had restarted with the WRONG HOOK!!! I had to rip the first 6 out and remake them! UGH! It turned out beautiful, but, OH, the extra work!
Oh that's such a painful moment to realize the hook size is wrong! 😭 I have done that more times than I would like to admit... 😆 Hence the need for all the hacks and tricks to make sure I remember haha!
In re your "funky double crochet" hack for a missed single crochet: I found from working Post Stitches in ribbed crochet that if,after pulling the loop above the missed stitch and the loop in the missed stitch, I pull the last two loops off the hook , insert the hook into the lower loop, pull the upper loop through the lower, then yarn over and complete the double crochet I end up with a flatter repair.
It's crazy how simple the hack makes it to bulk up yarn, right? As for the missed stitch hack, that's totally okay! I even forget how to do it sometimes myself 😆
I just tonight 9/18/2023 found your channel. Thank you! Your hack #1 I already use sometimes. Hack #2 was amazing. Never again will turn chain bump stick out. I can see where hack #3 could be useful especially if you need to make a bag handle or a basket. Hack #4 will certainly take practice, but it is interesting. I use the stacked sc as an alternative to th ch 3 for dc or ch 4 for the tr. I think I’ll continue to ch 1 for the single crochet stitch because hack 2 takes care of the straight edges and keeps the height and form of the stitch uniform. I too use the stacked sc (ssc) in the round. I think it makes for as perfect a look as we can get in crochet. Thank you so much. I learned a lot. Keep it up.
So glad you enjoyed these hacks! And I'm right there with you as far as turning chains. Stacking the single crochets is AWESOME for taller stitches, and hack #2 is a great way to handle the turning chain with sc. Anything to make turning chains look nicer is a win in my book!
That ending was everything 😉 Loved it! Also, I'm absolutely and 100 percent new to crocheting, so your hacks are not just hacks for me, but also savers of my insanity (still having trouble with putting on just normal stitches 😅) Hope that I'll come to the moment where I can use all your hacks and also get those wonderful straight edges and everything so tight and flawless 😍
Haha, I debated making the ending the intro, but was afraid people might click off the video 😂 That's awesome you're learning to crochet! Don't worry, every starts off feeling all goofy trying to figure out how to move the hook and grab the yarn. But stick with it, and you will absolutely get there one day!
@@CraftersAutonomous Never ever would I have clicked away, if I would have seen that ending as an intro. Love clips like that! :D They make my day! :D Thank you so much for all your encouraging words. I really hope I'll get better rather sooner than later ;D Have a wonderful day, dear! :)
Incredible! Hack 3, bulky yarn, and only this week (after MANY years of crochet) did I start making floor rugs. First think I find out is that the thicker yarn is harder to get (in Australia) and quite expensive. That this hack appeared just now when I was Googling the lyrics of an old song that was stuck in my head .... how weird (awesome!!) is that!!!!!! THANK YOU SO VERY VERY MUCH!! (... and, if you throw some thin bonded fabric in there, or join even one strand of another colour ... options are boundless!!) My hack ... if you're using more than one ball of yarn, work from the CENTRE of the ball. Line those babies up in a basket, then just turn the basket when you turn your work!) :)
I love how the UA-cam algorithm sometimes just knows the perfect video to show haha! Now I'm curious what the song was. :) So true that thicker yarn can be so much pricier. I've started using this method to make chunky amigurumi just using weight 4 yarn that's already in my stash. Love your method to make working with multiple balls of yarn easier! One skein can get tangled enough on it's own- it's a nightmare when several get tangled! Thanks for watching.
Hi - Thanks for your great hacks. I'm a beginner and can use all the help I can get. But I find it so interesting that you can take some yarn, and a tool, and make something so beautiful. It's like a little miracle. Thanks for sharing and let the hacks continue. Love PegEgg
It really feels like magic! I don't know anyone was clever enough to come up with crochet in the first place. And that' awesome you're learning! Everyone starts somewhere, and as long as you stick with it you'll be crocheting amazing things in no time.
I thought I was the only one that forgot what hook size I was using. THANK YOU for the good Idea!!
To make thicker yarn with the loops is a great idea! 🧡

I just keep my yarn in a gallon size ziploc bag and let it feed out the end of the closed zipper.
Great
@Rande I'm sorry, it was after reading through your comment that I stopped trying to figure out how he got the yarn in the bottle. That is a brilliant idea!!
@JupiterJamie , That's what I do, too. However, I also love the idea of using a big standing metal colander. I just need to get one.😂
The hacks to neaten the edges and ply-up a single strand of yarn are amazing!
Yay! So glad you enjoyed these hacks! They've been absolute game changers for me.
Those were my favorite two hacks too!!
Does the edge stitch work on other stitches besides sc ?
Agreed!! Wonderful tips!! Thank you for sharing these "hacks"!
The hack is from TL Yarncraft. Toni offers awesome hacks too.
I have an even quicker hack for no ‘turning bumps’. turn UNDER instead of OVER. It removes the twist that turning over makes. 🤷🏻♀️
Do you mean "yarn under"? If not, I don't understand what you mean?
Thank you sooooo much!! I tried this and I have never had straighter edges! 🙌🙌
@@VictoriaKimballThat is how I understood it.
I complete the row and then turn under like you.
Or even quicker than that, don’t even make a turning chain at the start. Just start with the sc.
Hack No. 3 is genius. Turning one strand into 3. Love it! :)
Oh my gosh!!! That 3 ply trick is GENIUS!! Thank you!!
The accordion fold is a great idea for bigger projects! Thanks for sharing.
I love your hack!!
Ok
U@@CraftersAutonomous
Thank you for this great idea! I crochet blankies as well, and they are hard to manage as they grow. This should help!
Awesome hack #3!! So genius making 3 strands out of 1. Thanks!
Love the ones for the straight edge and how to triple your thread without using three balls at once! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for watching.
Bavarian rectangle
The ply you did is called Navajo ply and they do this to have thicker yarn for their rugs. I have used it in knitting. Thank you and the best to you.
I have been crocheting for 28 years, and I learned a couple new tricks. Thank you!! 👏I am saving this video!😊
Yay, I'm so glad I was able to teach you something new! Thanks for watching!

Wow, the single crochet hack to keep edges straight is awesome!
I’m only nine minutes in and my mind is already blown. These tips are amazing.
This makes me so happy to hear! Thanks for supporting my channel.
Wow! hack #3 is GREAT
Wow, wow, WOW!!!!!!! Thank you for the straight edges.
It's such a game changer, right?
Loving your hacks, the way you turn single strand yarn into bulky is amazing, Will definitely be trying this 😊

Aww thank you so much for your kind words! I appreciate you watching.
Omg!… this is going to be so great for straight edges on a coaster. My coasters always were a little unsatisfying square, but not pretty this will make a huge difference. Love that hack. Also, the triple strand is great.
I used to just run a single row of extra single crochets around the whole piece to neaten it up a bit. I like her idea though.
Thank you for taking the time to share what you learned through trial and error. It makes it easy for the rest of us. 💖
You are so very welcome!

Ooh this sounds like a great method too!
Thanks for these!
i can imagen that edge hack might make it easy to join another work to it too
Hack #3 is life changing!!! Thank you! I'll never get that missed stitch one, even though I need it.
It's crazy how simple the hack makes it to bulk up yarn, right? As for the missed stitch hack, that's totally okay! I even forget how to do it sometimes myself 😆
WOOOW, ur amazing I've been crochet'n over 50-yrs & NEVER knew these hacks THANK U SOOOO VERY MH "LV THEM" ❤💃🎶👌🌷🙏
I'm so glad I was able to teach you something new! Thanks for watching.
I absolutely love your sense of humor!! Keep hacking!!
Genius! Thank you so much I now know how to use the beautiful yarn my husband gave me- fine single ply. I’m very excited! 😊

Thank you that was Hacktastic! 🥰🥰🥰
You're very welcome! I'm gonna have to start using the word hacktastic now 😄
@@CraftersAutonomous please do!! 🤣🤣🤣. I’m always smashing words together to make funnies ☺️
Great idea .
You are amazing! Love to see you share more hack to make the crochet more beautiful ❤.
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed these ideas.
Superb content; presentation is perfect. Thanks
Thank you for the kind words!
I was taught the 3 yarn as one with loop as Navaho plying a single handspun yarn .
I've had a couple people mention that! So very cool to see how different skills get passed down through the generations and utilized in different way.
Simple changes with big impacts! I love it!
I love the way you worded this! Thanks for watching.
Love the clean edge hack. This I've never seen before . Thank you.
Wow hack no.2 is cool 😊
I'll be sharing your channel with my students!
I liked this video from the very first hack
Very informative. Thanks for sharing.
Love that first hack!!!!!
Really appreciated hack #3. Thank you.
Edge hack the best
(... and, if you throw some thin bonded fabric in there, or join even one strand of another colour ... options are boundless!!)
My hack ... if you're using more than one ball of yarn, work from the CENTRE of the ball.
You are so smart! Thank you for the hacks.
Brilliantly creative. Please Keep sharing, Thanks
Thank you, I will!
I have been doing hack # 1 for a while.. Great tip.❤
That's awesome! It's so simple it leaves me going "why didn't I think of this sooner?" haha
I have been crocheting for years and I love that I continue to learn new techniques every day
Thank you ❤
Yes, it's so fun that there's always something new to learn! I'm so glad you enjoyed this video, and thanks for watching.
