@@aldyson3469I don’t own a grizzly, but personally I think the 686 engine is one of the most reliable ever. I would probably still go for a Grizzly 700 just because it’s tried and tested even if they came out with an 850
I have the '19 SE, and feel the same way about the Grizzly. I had originally intended to shell out the money for performance shocks, but after riding my friends Outlander 650 and 850, have decided against it. Not full buyers remorse, I enjoy my Grizzly but there is a lot I'm still missing. The performance and handling for my type of riding. I hope that Yamaha or Honda come out with a larger bore performance oriented 4x4, or I may end up with an Outlander Xxc. Still keeping my Grizzly, and my Rincon because they're too good to get rid off.
I had a 2018 textron (articat) Alterra 300. Total garbage. Thing was scrap metal in 1 year with easy farm riding. Never trails or mud. Trans went, difs leaking, bad starter, lights stopped working. Total nightmare.
I want an 850 in this so bad, that I would literally head to a dealer and trade in my Can Am Outlander 850 XT-P, which I absolutely love, on the spot! The Grizzly really is a phenomenal looking machine, especially in that new green color 2021 XTR
Mike coming in from behind the scenes! Great prospective on the grizz, phenomenal machine but it’s time for Yammy to bring some more options at that price point.
Awesome. They are sexy machines, just like that new Yamaha RMAX1000 which Dirt Trax will hopefully be reviewing soon. Heck, I'm 15 minutes away from Yamaha's head office, I can pick it up for you. What's the best route from Markham to Minden. 404N. Lol.
Having owned a 2021 700SE I agree with the too soft suspension. I have a 2012 Grizzly 550 and I find the suspension on that better than on my 700SE. Other than that I think Yamaha has made an awesome machine. The 700 has more than enough power for the tight and technical trails that I ride on around southern Ontario. More CCs and horsepower would not be any benefit.
I’ve owned many different brands including Yamaha. The grizzly is a fine machine for sure . I believe the ultramatic is the best CVT on the market followed by Suzuki and Kawasaki . For me though it’s just to gutless . My old 2006 Brute force 650i absolutely ate that 686 for a snack . I’ve had 3 Brutes up to the redesigned 2012s and up, and an XP 1000 sportsman . I don’t know if even an 850 grizz would be enough , now......a 1000 grizz would have me grinning ear to ear , unless Kawasaki made a 1000 Brute lol .
yes great review as usual I think Yamaha Honda Suzuki and kawi all need to build a 2 up and larger bore like you said 800 better yet 850 go big or go home thank you Lester great review
I have a Grizzy and Kodiak 700 but need that big power so I also have a Sportsman XP 1000 and Yamaha needs a 2 up Grizzy it would be a must have for me.
I'm a outlander max xt 2020 owner, loving it but when I was making my mind on which atv to buy, I really liked the grizzly, I went with can am because Yamaha does not have 2 up models...
I own a 07 Grizzly 700. That thing has been tough as nails reliable since I pulled it off the showroom floor but that's the only thing I've ever loved about it. Everything else is just basic too me. I've never felt like it's done one thing very good apart from being reliable. I'd never consider another one until they engineer something fresh and exciting.
Put the 700 engine in a 450 chassis and 850 in the big chassis. Loved the smaller chassis on my 450 but it could have used a bit more steam. I could smoke guys on bigger machines in the tight stuff, but didn't stand a chance when things opened up. It had plenty of torque and I never had an issue of needing more power in any situation. Just wanted more power when my friends on the big machines would leave me for dead on the open trails and roads. I have a Wolverine X2 850 XTR now, and I concur that this engine would be a great fit for a Big Quad. Very powerful, quiet, and compact.
Nice review! I have a 2020(non xtr) as well but find the suspension too harsh. The trails in northern Quebec are pretty rocky. Shock options for this beast seem very limited. I'm not a big fan of elka and fox don't have them listed for that model year.
Great review ! 850 V-twin , snorkel , and the rebuildable / Fox suspension like you pointed out and they wouldn’t be able to manufacture the Griz fast enough to meet the demands ! I’m personally ok with the 686cc power plant, but definitely too mushy on the suspension and the snorkel should have been standard equipment LONG AGO !
Buying this machine soon, coming from a 1000 can am, big horsepower is cool, until you chew up your drive train, im very excited to have a bike with less power
A year later, a pandemic later, Japanese manufacturers are like, hey let me do little improvements, change color schemes, different names and tire packages and increase the msrp 5-10% annually and no one will notice….. Still think this unit deserve a lot of props. I’m a Bruteforce guy and if I needed another quad I’d give this a look but it’s so frustrating we can’t another atv arms race in either the sport utility or sport atv world….yes I know, sxs have taken over…. Still there is a bunch of atv enthusiasts who are begging for something totally radically, totally new
I came off a BruteForce to a 2016 700 Grizz... Grizz is definitely a higher quality machine but does lack the bottom end that V Twin gives you. I would buy a 850 if Yamaha came out with one.
That Honda comment made me laugh . Tho Yamaha has a amazing cvt but I still haven't been convinced it's the way to go. For a sled yes but not for a atv in my opinion
Why? I have found on more than one occasion cvt makes things like hill climbs way better and safer! I have seen and (oops) rolled an ATV due to the steepness and need to gear down vrs a cvt, more throttle is all that’s needed!
Also for MPG. You can manually shift into a high hear when you are just cruising down a trail and because there is less power loss in a geared tranny plus selecting the higher ratio you can sip fuel on a honda. My buddies on Brutes are always anxiously checking their fuel gauges when we are on the long trails.
At 5:33 the left headlight is about to fall out. That's the only reason I went Can Am. Well that and the power ;P I definitely agree though, Yamaha needs to bring out a bigger engine, if they did maybe Honda would follow suit.
I’ve been ready to buy a bigger/updated Grizzly for many years now and every year I’m disappointed. And this is coming from someone who loved my own 2011 Grizzly 700 EPS. Please Yamaha give us an 850 for 2022 and take my money!
I’ve been in the same boat with my 2011 Rincon. Looking to upgrade but waiting for a Yamaha or Honda twin. I sometimes find myself looking at the Kawasaki and thinking ‘should I?’
Hey ! Good video DT ! I too am a 2 grizzly owner (2008, 2017) and I think you guys hit on all good points, they really do need to upgrade the power plant to the 850-1000cc. I agree the Yamaha CVT should be on all machines, it's so smooth and not jerky at all, it's the way to go for sure. And like you said Better shocks is a Must. I'd keep the 686 for the Kodiak and they should make a 450 Kodiak again. thanks !
Right on. Just watched your walk-around of your 2017 Grizzly. Great job on that. Everyone on here should go over and check that out. Tons of honest, real-world information there.

@MotoMatt, there is no point to Bossman's conclusion. He's just flaming because what a griz has is a snowball's chance in hell of running down a 450 or 700 raptor like a new 1000XTP can. I don't know why you wouldn't want frosting in your cake. If you want a glorified tractor buy a Honda lol.
Hopefully never. Even the older 550's have more power than needed for anything. They are workhorses that you can also can also tear up the trails with. Mine has eaten alive every 850 and 1000 that I ever rode with. This class isn't for drag racing.
@@skeet25s Just because they make a twin 850 or 1000 doesn't mean they have to quit making a 700. The 700 has plenty if power for most people but go jump on a renegade 1000 and having that power on tap is so addicting.
@@ethanmunger3374 I don't think it would be a grizzly at that point. Half the grizzly's benefit and agility is the weight ratio. It will just be a different machine.

I need to change the spark plugs and oil every 100 miles because when you shut the engine cold off the gasoline gets in the oil and the plugs just clog so it wont even start 6. @@jasonspencer384 I've talked to a lot of people that switched from Yamaha to one of the more powerful brands. They mostly all say they would switch back if Yamaha would just make a move...
Motorcycle Michael I would even settle for the 700 engine in the tenere 700 and mt07. I’ve been on Can Ams and Polaris but would look seriously at a higher performance Yamaha Grizzly or even a Brute Fore that was updated with more engine performance and plastics so it didn’t look like it was 20 years old.
Unpopular opinion...keep the Grizz with the 686 and design a completely new ATV with a 1000cc from the ground up. Make the Grizz with cheaper options like 25 inch tires for farm use and drop the kodiak 700. Move the entire line higher in the market. Probably never happen with a SxS buying market.
I wish you would have talked about, Yamaha clutch and drive train. And tell why it is different from the other VSP, and talk about their 10 warranty, on the drive clutch.
Not 100 percent certain if Yamaha upgraded the clutching or not, but it did not feel snappier to compensate for the bigger tires. If they did not, they should have.
Agree on the two-up. Where I live, two-ups are the law for carrying a passenger. To not be forced to buy a less than reliable machine for far-back country trips would be ideal (not AC, Pol, CanHam).... and the P500 from Honda is too small in the driver's seat for me to drive. Everything else is in the SxS market is well beyond the price of a typical two up quad and doesn't fit on a lot of our trails. Thus, a two-up reliable quad would be huge from Honda or Yamaha. Not sure I agree yet on the 850 however.... unless someone can state the weight difference here between the 686 and 850... would it be worth adding 50-150 lbs (guessing) to the nimble Grizzly??? for the sake of a twin??
@@dawsonmatthys5162 LOL. I'm only 6' but with 33" inseam and heavy hunting boots and cold weather gear, I have to cramp my leg in an uncomfortable position to drive my buddy's 2017. I ended up with a Viking for a SxS... room to breath for three large males wearing gear for all day cold weather hunting! Maybe I slouch too much...!
That's what I've wondered too. What makes the Grizzly so fun is that it's so much lighter than other similar models. Making it a lot heavier just for the sake of a few more ponies isn't worth it to me. But we don't know how heavy that 850 really is. If it isn't more than 50 pounds heavier, that's a lot tougher call than if it's over 100 pounds heavier.

@@MrZachster9 I hear ya Pro but keep in mind the 570 xmr is just shy of 11k without a winch and pretty much mud only tires. Griz has 2500 pro-vantage. It wasn't an easy decision for me either. I wouldn't go near Polaris for an ATV if you paid me. Battery location?!?!? Ok that makes no sense. Oil dipstick access cover will not stay put. Piddly 1" tow hitch. Plastic racks. Nuff said. Very poor fit and finish. A buddies has had nothing but trouble. In two seasons there's been three motor mounts, two CV shafts and A COLLAPSED RAD HOSE! WTF! How does that even happen? Add to that the extended warranty he purchased requires regular paid inspections by the dealer. On top of that he's had to pay labour for the "warranty" work. It's cost him close to 3500 bucks in "warranty" work. In 2 years. If this sounds good to you go throw your money away.
I have this one as well 2" lift kit and 2" risers on the bars. ( NOT 5 minute job) lol I love her to death!! Did slice open a sidewall and slice a front boot.
If Yamaha comes out with a twin for an atv , they should revamp the bear 🐻 names . Two Kodiaks ? And a grizzly is smaller than a Kodiak ? Polar bear being the largest .
Yamaha got a couple of names in their back pocket like Timberwolf, BigBear and if they go v-twin there's the Vmax! If they want to cross names like Can am/Skidoo there's the Sidewinder that could stand in front of the Renegade with the Rmax 1000 motor. Yamaha is missing the boat on the atv market. Yamaha has to do the that twin swap 850/1000.
The Grizzly 700 is the Tacoma of the ATV world. It gets you where you want to go and is reliable as can be.

I'm more than happy mine and not because it's the one I bought, because it truly is heads and shoulder above the others as far as (pleasure) trail riding .. the others seriously CAN NOT keep up on the trails .. go ride them all, decide for yourself (I did) you'll see what I'm talking about .. the Grizzly XT-R is an AWSOME machine !!! There's a reason Yamaha isn't jumping up into the big twins just to say they have one .. it's because the 686s are fantastic power plants. Know the Grizzly XT-Rs are a sport utility machine that leans heavily towards the sport side lol .. good luck with what ever machine you chose !!!
I owned a 2009 Brute Force, and I was incredibly close on pulling the trigger on 1 of these. But the lack of power is something I couldn’t get around, so I stuck with what I new and got a 2020 Brute Force. I would gladly look at them again down the road if they come out with a bigger motor.
Same here love my 19 brute force
Shoulda took one for a test ride .. My 2020 XR-T most definitely does NOT suffer from a lack of power .. I can run right with any of the 850s and 1000s on pavement and gravel roads but on the trails they can't even begin to keep up I'm constantly at the trails end waiting for them .. My XR-T is a trail shredder BIG TIME (second to NON in the sport utility or utilitiy machines of any size)... Only the 100% sport machines can out run me, and most of them can't ... Lol (to be fare tho, the Grizzly XR-Ts are sport utility quads that lean heavily to the sport side) just my opinion
Kawasaki haha

Now that's just MY opinion but I feel like it would cover all the bases for yamaha.
But at the end of the day after talking to multiple yamaha reps it will never happen. at least no plans of that any time in the near future. Yamaha is willing to give that market to polaris and canam.the rest of the world is happy with yamaha 700s and honda 650s

Very good video
Having owned a 2021 700SE I agree with the too soft suspension. I have a 2012 Grizzly 550 and I find the suspension on that better than on my 700SE. Other than that I think Yamaha has made an awesome machine. The 700 has more than enough power for the tight and technical trails that I ride on around southern Ontario. More CCs and horsepower would not be any benefit.
Agree 💯
Would love to see the BF get an overhaul and a new mill.
@@dirttraxtv Yamaha has a 998cc triple in its cupboard. Drop that into a quad and I'll buy one.

I'm a outlander max xt 2020 owner, loving it but when I was making my mind on which atv to buy, I really liked the grizzly, I went with can am because Yamaha does not have 2 up models...
Still got yourself a great ATV.
Fair enough.
I'm not a big fan of elka and fox don't have them listed for that model year.
does it beat the 04 660 though. my dad had one for years and it was a tank
coming from a 2014 foreman 500 i dont miss it at all. i love my 2018 708 grizzly almost 100hrs 800miles, not a single issue besides random stalls.

Yes.
Do a comparison of all 700,750 sport utilities
A year later, a pandemic later, Japanese manufacturers are like, hey let me do little improvements, change color schemes, different names and tire packages and increase the msrp 5-10% annually and no one will notice…..
Still think this unit deserve a lot of props. I’m a Bruteforce guy and if I needed another quad I’d give this a look but it’s so frustrating we can’t another atv arms race in either the sport utility or sport atv world….yes I know, sxs have taken over…. Still there is a bunch of atv enthusiasts who are begging for something totally radically, totally new
Love to have one of these quads along with my Raptor 700R
Heck yes!
I came off a BruteForce to a 2016 700 Grizz... Grizz is definitely a higher quality machine but does lack the bottom end that V Twin gives you. I would buy a 850 if Yamaha came out with one.
How is the Grizzly higher quality? I'm in the market. Thanks.
That Honda comment made me laugh . Tho Yamaha has a amazing cvt but I still haven't been convinced it's the way to go. For a sled yes but not for a atv in my opinion
Fair enough.
Why?
I have found on more than one occasion cvt makes things like hill climbs way better and safer!
I have seen and (oops) rolled an ATV due to the steepness and need to gear down vrs a cvt, more throttle is all that’s needed!

Matthew Juntunen yup, most farmers buy Honda because they are not out riding rough stuff, working them.

Hopefully never. Even the older 550's have more power than needed for anything. They are workhorses that you can also can also tear up the trails with. Mine has eaten alive every 850 and 1000 that I ever rode with. This class isn't for drag racing.

Could be! Sounds pretty baller for a stock ATV.
Is this more like a slower, "stiff 4WD" ATV or how can it be described compared to other sporty "AWD" ATVs?
I'd put the 686 single in the 500-class engine category comparably. It's pretty quick and nimble, but it is not a 1000cc V-Twin monster.

That's what I've wondered too. What makes the Grizzly so fun is that it's so much lighter than other similar models. Making it a lot heavier just for the sake of a few more ponies isn't worth it to me. But we don't know how heavy that 850 really is. If Yamaha comes out with a twin for an atv , they should revamp the bear 🐻 names . Two Kodiaks ? And a grizzly is smaller than a Kodiak ? Polar bear being the largest .
So folks can say they killed a polar bear 😂. Would dilute the tree hugging folks.
