I am an American male who has never once played a competitive game of chess in my life but I truly hope Magnus Carlsen realizes that he has become a shining light for a sport that hardly gets recognized in the WestWorld. I love his pure genius, his aptitude for learning and most importantly his ability to have fun when the time calls for it. You really only hear about how chess is a game for stuck up people and I’ve never been happier to discover that something isn’t true. Keep being you Magnus!

Tricky to play against as black but in theory black should get equality in the line.
And I wouldn’t even say that GM Howell is “far below” Magnus’ level. I mean, his peak rating was over 2700, which is Super GM level. If any of us is far below Magnus, it is definitely me. I mean, Carlsen has me by about 450 points, so that’s a pretty massive margin. David Howell is fairly comparable. And both of them would blow me off the board.
I think it's important to note that while David is a highly accomplished grandmaster, he's still rated something like 300-500 points behind Magnus. That means that Magnus is somewhere between 50x to 1000x more likely to win. So, while their relative elos aren't that far apart, their respective odds of winning are.
Drew a GM today for the first time ever after watching this video and playing 1. b4 against him. Oh, and it was on the table used for the Magnus - Karjakin WC match I'm just a CM so it was a big deal for me :)
