That and the fact he was literally up 2-1 in semi final and drew terran. Play the odds at that point in time he should have been up 3-1 in semi. Even his lack of top tier skill in Z and P he should have won being up 3-1. It was his misplay as terran than gave him 2-2 instead of 3-1

Yeah like no one thought about using burrow in ZvZ before lol, it’s 100/100, that’s one muta and could be the difference between winning and losing. Using burrow to hide drones is like reason #1 to get it.

Their language is rather alluding to this, so I don’t think it’s fair to stretch the peripherals to precedents beyond these domains.

I think Artosis was trying to say at the end that he doesn't like Random being in the tournament because it always leads to cheesy games, or "clowny" as he called it. Understandably I think he held back a little bit but I see where he's coming from. Flash's Random is like a 50/50 mix of excitement and eye-rolling.
I think his random wouldn't have felt as luck-based without those ZvZ on the Plasma map. On more standard maps, while still giving you an opening advantage, random doesn't mean "build order advantage = auto-win".
Can someone explain game 3 to me? Wtf happened? Larva did a ton of damage, killed many SCVs and Flash's army twice... Then Flash walks across the map and kills him. Was Larva too aggressive with rebuilding mutas instead of getting lurker & swarm setup asap?
Yeah, he was very all-in. When you're going for those aggressive Mutalisk plays, you indirectly damage your economy / tech because you're investing a lot in getting as many early Mutalisks as possible. Larva got many goods hits and did a decent amount of damage, but he never really hurt Flash more than he hurt himself. Flash's tech wasn't significantly delayed. As soon as Flash managed to stabilise his position with the vessels, he was in a winning position. Larva probably should have transitioned a bit earlier. Also, at some points, the supply looked good for Larva, but most of his supply was badly injured Mutalisks, so he didn't have that much of an actual army to defend himself. 2 hatch Muta games often look like this. Larva seemed to be winning, he kept winning trades… But if you look at the bigger picture, he never really was ahead.

When he was even under Larva's attack, he kept scanning the Larva's base and natural. So he knew that Larva's is super all-in by counting the number of the drones and checking out the tech. As he moved forward with his army and vessels, it simply became his game.
Larva stopped teching after Mutas, basically his build order was Pool > Lair > Spire > Mutas. It looked like Flash was behind most of the time because he was teching heavy Barracks > Marine > Eng Bay + Academy > Marine Range > Factory > Starport > Science Facility > Irradiate > Science Vessel. It's amazing how much Terran would tech just to counter Mutas.
Random is very much a double edged sword but is ultimately more advantageous for Flash Imho. In a sense both players have to prepare thrice the amount of builds, 3 for each map as neither player knows what matchup each map is going to be, so that's not just on Flash to prepare extra builds. The main issue with going random is obviously proficiency with all 3 races. However it somewhat evens out with the main advantage going random gives you, which is heavily restriction your opponent's build and strategy as they have to take all 3 races into account so they must use generic all purpose builds rather than superior specialized ones. That's also the reason Zerg suffers the least from facing against random, as they have the most build flexibility of all 3 races so by the time the Zerg knows what matchup it is he hasn't fully committed to a build just yet whereas Terran and Protoss already partially committed and if they need to transition it'll be much harder.
I was actually saying to my roommate the other day that zergs could get burrow in zvz to save their drones from mutas, and now here's flash of all people doing it rofl
Yeah we’ve all thought about it, I think you don’t see it because it’s the cost of a muta and if there’s mutas in your drone line you failed. It worked well in this situation because flash was so far ahead in muta count but vulnerable at home. It’s like getting excited about that recall move in GSL. There’s reasons offensive recalls are rarely used in SC2 and it’s sort of an implicit use of the ability (unless archon toilet used to count). I mean it was a good move for both players no doubt but it’s not like Alexander the Great strategic genius.
It would be very crazy if another player started to play random and gets a bracket with Flash playing random, so we would have a random vs random Bo7...
Well, you just summed up the difference between Flash and Artosis. Flash scouted, counted the drones, calculated the amount of Zerglings that could potentially be on the map, then he moved out because he knew he was safe. Artosis would have just moved out, lost his marines, and whined about unfairly losing to "such a terrible B-rank player". Everything players like Flash and Queen do is calculated. They don't take random risks: they know exactly what they can get away with.

It's a bit sad, if you ask me, that raging attracts more viewers than having a relaxed, positive and analytical stream - especially on a game like Starcraft that has an older viewer base than, say, League of Legends. But when streaming is your job, I guess you have to do whatever will attract the most viewers. Working isn't about doing what you like; it's about making money.

That’s a good point, but aside from one TvT wasn’t all of Flash’s games on plasma ZvZ and it’s clear unless larva or Soma just rolled the dice on ZvZ that flash just wins. Now it’s fair that a map like that favors random but so does sparkle or that spoke wheel map with the permanent disruption webs. Any non-standard map especially if it’s 3 or 4 spawn will favor the random player and ASL usually includes one of these. It wouldn’t have helped a random player that wasn’t seeded into the tournament though because plasma wasn’t played until what ro8?
If not one can assume ASL will pick even more crazy maps that will increasingly favor random. If i had to bet will ASL pick fighting spirit type maps or crazy maps of course they'll pick crazy maps to make it more interesting

Thanks for the video! I live for these! Long live BW! Spoiler I think Larva played very poorly in game 1. He had a really strong start and somehow just gave it away. Game 2 is why Flash is the best ever. Game 3 was over when Arty called he was T based on the minimap split. Also, Larva was certainly unlucky. Poor Larva I really like the guy.

I don’t think, ‘being too good’ is a legit reason for him to play random. But artosis did do a video on how much of a fan he is of flash and yea how great of a player he is and how much of a fanboy he is and reasoning that it was because flash is too good. I think he just wants to change the scene a little bit... he’s honestly not as good on other races, and random does give you a slight advantage in that since. It’s kinda a give and take. Right off the bat, he has knowledge of the other players race vs the other player not knowing. This information and your value of it, really determines the random race. Artosis REALLY, disregards or down plays this fact. I, on the other, think this information is priceless, rather invaluable. But who am I 🤷♂️

Theoretically speaking, couldn't a random player be the strongest in the world? They have a strong chance at a build order advantage every game. If Flash's Protoss and Zerg were just on par with Round of 8 ASL, he could use his build order advantage to "elevate" those races' play slightly to the Ro4 caliber, and then his T is God-Tier...But long term, as he strengthens P and especially Z, shouldn't he be favored on a balanced map pool? I think we can agree this seasons' maps were heavily Z favored, which is obviously bad for Flash's Random because then he rolled a LOT more ZvZ and PvZ. In the alternate reality where he doesn't face Soma or Queen on the tough maps tho, I could see his PvX and TvX being very very strong.
The "spoked wheel" weird map whose name Artosis and Tasteless couldn't remember this time or last time was Inner Coven. That map, Sparkle, Neo-Horizon, and Ringing Bloom really speak to the pro-Zerg/anti-Terran (anti-Flash?) bias of the map-makers. They're more likely to make a map that's virtually unwinnable for Terran than they are to cause Zerg the slightest inconvenience. Heck, they'll even go out of their way to make things easier for Zerg, with the Zerg-only geyser on Sparkle, the "floor guns" on Inner Coven that disrupted optimal CC/Nexus/Hatchery placement and needed detection (good thing Zergs have free detection from the outset, along with free aerial scouting and nearly-free transports later on!) to remove, and the neutral creep on Ringing Bloom to allow for easier defense. Zerg confirmed OP and imba, no wonder Flash went Random -- maybe it wasn't out of boredom or the desire to spice things up, but because we've reached the point where the only way to beat top-level Zerg is to occasionally play Zerg yourself.
I'm not sure a map such as Inner Coven was explicitly meant to nerf Terran, although it was arguably the result. Even as a Zerg, I never liked those "weird" maps. It felt like you were playing against the map more than you were playing against your opponent. A map should only be a neutral battleground for the players to fight on. When the map becomes more important in your preparation than your opponent, there's a problem. I think the map makers simply wanted to make the game more interesting by forcing a meta shift, but in my opinion, that's not the map's job. A meta shift has to come from the players, not the map. The creep on Ringing Bloom is fair in my opinion. Without it, Zerg would be the only race unable to wall in if they go for a 2-hatch play. Also, the high-ground would rather work against Zerg, since it makes bust strategies (like a Hydra bust in zvp) less realistic.
LOL the greater spire tech in the first game was such a fail flash control not as good as before(leaking marines medics not with marines tanks in range of sunkens etc)... yet hes still the best...just insane how strong his terran is
You saw him in the interview hedging about playing random, he can see his Terran play suffering and it’s his Terran play that makes flash random scary.
Terrans besides Flash don't have winning records because Last retired. Flash & Last carried Terran for the past few years. Light was never close to either so it's no surprise he can't consistently make top 4
I like Larva, but I'm glad Flash won. I was getting sick of Zerg wrecking everyone in this tournament. And how annoying is Muta play? Anyway, I hope next season theres more variation when it gets to the finals
On plasma vs the same strat that beat Soma with some super clever modifications. The sunken addition was a stroke of genius on a map that rewards that sort of play. I wouldn’t think to much about it.

Last season almost every round of 8 were 5 games going to 2-2, this season has been very one sided match up with a few exceptions

Ok so I haven't watched in a while... So did flash decide he was to good for everyone and go random? Also who is in finals or who was and who won? Thanks in advance for answers.

I don’t think, ‘being too good’ is a legit reason for him to play random. But artosis did do a video on how much of a fan he is of flash and yea how great of a player he is and how much of a fanboy he is and reasoning that it was because flash is too good. I think he just wants to change the scene a little bit... he’s honestly not as good on other races, and random does give you a slight advantage in that since. It’s kinda a give and take. Right off the bat, he has knowledge of the other players race vs the other player not knowing. This information and your value of it, really determines the random race. Artosis REALLY, disregards or down plays this fact. I, on the other, think this information is priceless, rather invaluable. But who am I 🤷♂️

Theoretically speaking, couldn't a random player be the strongest in the world? They have a strong chance at a build order advantage every game. If Flash's Protoss and Zerg were just on par with Round of 8 ASL, he could use his build order advantage to "elevate" those races' play slightly to the Ro4 caliber, and then his T is God-Tier...But long term, as he strengthens P and especially Z, shouldn't he be favored on a balanced map pool? I think we can agree this seasons' maps were heavily Z favored, which is obviously bad for Flash's Random because then he rolled a LOT more ZvZ and PvZ. In the alternate reality where he doesn't face Soma or Queen on the tough maps tho, I could see his PvX and TvX being very very strong.

The "spoked wheel" weird map whose name Artosis and Tasteless couldn't remember this time or last time was Inner Coven. That map, Sparkle, Neo-Horizon, and Ringing Bloom really speak to the pro-Zerg/anti-Terran (anti-Flash?) bias of the map-makers. They're more likely to make a map that's virtually unwinnable for Terran than they are to cause Zerg the slightest inconvenience. Heck, they'll even go out of their way to make things easier for Zerg, with the Zerg-only geyser on Sparkle, the "floor guns" on Inner Coven that disrupted optimal CC/Nexus/Hatchery placement and needed detection (good thing Zergs have free detection from the outset, along with free aerial scouting and nearly-free transports later on!) to remove, and the neutral creep on Ringing Bloom to allow for easier defense. Zerg confirmed OP and imba, no wonder Flash went Random -- maybe it wasn't out of boredom or the desire to spice things up, but because we've reached the point where the only way to beat top-level Zerg is to occasionally play Zerg yourself.
I'm not sure a map such as Inner Coven was explicitly meant to nerf Terran, although it was arguably the result.
Even as a Zerg, I never liked those "weird" maps. It felt like you were playing against the map more than you were playing against your opponent. A map should only be a neutral battleground for the players to fight on. When the map becomes more important in your preparation than your opponent, there's a problem. I think the map makers simply wanted to make the game more interesting by forcing a meta shift, but in my opinion, that's not the map's job. A meta shift has to come from the players, not the map.
The creep on Ringing Bloom is fair in my opinion. Without it, Zerg would be the only race unable to wall in if they go for a 2-hatch play. Also, the high-ground would rather work against Zerg, since it makes bust strategies (like a Hydra bust in zvp) less realistic.

flash control not as good as before(leaking marines medics not with marines tanks in range of sunkens etc)... yet hes still the best...just insane how strong his terran is
You saw him in the interview hedging about playing random, he can see his Terran play suffering and it’s his Terran play that makes flash random scary.

Terrans besides Flash don't have winning records because Last retired. Flash & Last carried Terran for the past few years. Light was never close to either so it's no surprise he can't consistently make top 4
I like Larva, but I'm glad Flash won. I was getting sick of Zerg wrecking everyone in this tournament. And how annoying is Muta play? Anyway, I hope next season theres more variation when it gets to the finals

On plasma vs the same strat that beat Soma with some super clever modifications. The sunken addition was a stroke of genius on a map that rewards that sort of play. I wouldn’t think to much about it.
