I have 600+ h in Satisfactory and planned to stream it fulltime once 1.0 released. And I had problems with fluid mechanics since I started playing this game. But holy you helped me understanding fluid mechanics a lot. Ofc I could just looked up the manual but having the issues summarized and explained in detail is actually quite entertaining and helps really with understanding the topic!
I hope you continue doing those kind of videos, so that I can learn more about some mechanics, so that my streaming world has more quality :D

Fluid mechanics of the game are NOT realistic. I was a Mechanical Engineer (Nuclear) for 20 years and I am now a Software Engineer. Pumps and valves and pipes flow consistently, once in equilibrium. Ninety degree turns and junctions do not cause water to flow backwards in a pipe that has a pump running, etc. Liquids change level in a surge/buffer tank while maintaining normal flow in a given loop. The fluids in Satisfactory need to be fixed. Other games have pipes that flow normally. Don't get me wrong, Satisfactory is quite fun and I play it frequently (just checked and I have 776 hours in game) .. but the devs saying it works like real life are incorrect.

I found the negative comments about the pipeline manual fascinating. As someone working in a technical field, the manual felt comfy - the sort of reference guide I might actually pick up. It's interesting to compare this minority reaction to say, the general opposite nature of the factorio community (the minority are normally trying to get you to earn a phd :P). I wonder what we can learn as a technical community from how satisfactory has made hyper technical activities (production line building) accessible to those who (understandably) react like that.

When fluids work differently, that is exciting because then we get to re-experience the experimenting, studying, brainstorming, etc. I don't dig that deep into the mechanics myself when I play but I really enjoy all of the videos and content and discussions around them. If fluids work differently then all of that leads to more of all those enjoyable things.

My way of thinking of the VIP circuit is that water from the byproduct line pushes 'up' against the fresh water that is going over the pipe hump and dropping back down.
This means that the byproduct is simultaneously trying to flow 'back' towards the fresh water source, and so some of that water blocks the flow of fresh water.
Possibly because the head lift calculation for the fresh water has extra steps in the hump and thus may complete later than headlift calculations for the horizontal pipe.
Or possibly because there's simply space for it to flow there, even if the UI doesn't show it.
Alternatively the extra math operations in the hump introduce a tiny amount of floating point errors, or some other elements that causes the pipe with the hump to become less valued, or evaluated second. Even if it's only second through sorting, since I don't think the simulation is multithreaded.
I suspect the reason it fails is because once both pipes become truly filled and stationary (and stationary is the key thing here, none of the water is flowing), the calculations for the whole simulation simplify and neither one is favored over the other. And since neither one is favored, and the entire system is locked up, it can't recover.
I would be interested to know if the headlift reset buffer tank had any available space Left in it once the entire system came to a halt before restoring inputs. If it did, that might be the only reason it could recover.

I've not spent a lot of time dealing with this issue, but what I did do was simular to the vertical headlift reset except I put valves on both sites of the junction to prevent back wash... then I overclocked until lock, underclocked to exactly what I needed and flushed a small segment to remove the lock. That save never game me a problem after that config.

your first video helped me alot about the by product for the silica building. And this one now solves another problem, which is the same idea, but for non-liquid products. The problem was: I needed to put a priority in 2 lanes (one comes from a drone, another from a chest that I fill manually). The priority must be the drone, while the manually chest should be used only if the drone wasnt enoght. With the design in 2:20 my problem can be 90% solve 😁😁

Ups, did not register about this more actual fluid topic video, so you'll find a comment in the mentioned other one...
Solution in short (seems bit similar to 3:20 - but not so much effort in case you already have #2 headlift-reset in place):
Use that #2 headlift-reset, just add additionally a "powered" pump on the "by-product" pipeline (as more headlift then and this will go for this reason into the industrial fluid buffer first ... at least I think this is the main reason.. only the developers may tell about whether this is right or not .. hehehe)
Thx for all the info and your effort, wouldn't come to this point without these. All pipes and by-products working fine for me now (watched over hours and hours...)
    Have fun! ;-)

    • @alexanderrobrecht6452

No no, that is a really clean german sentence! With just one exception:
The word "Lektionen" is in plural, which you would not pair up with "ist", but instead with "sind". So the sentence would be: "..., und die Lektionen sind sehr gut."
"sind" is (in this case) the form of "sein" which you would use for "sie (die Lektionen) sind" as in "they (the lectures) are".
Mad respect for you learning german. I am a native speaker but I can definitely appreciate the complexity of the language.

@@alexanderrobrecht6452 Awesome! Thanks for the input. Every bit helps.
This is super nerdy, but I find that learning German is like looking into the history of modern English. Middle-English has some of the same grammatical structures as German, and Old-English has the same sounds and even original meanings. I love it.

@@kythian Wow, that is interesting! I've never been much of a linguistics nerd, although if I stumble upon some fun connections, I usually find them fascinating. I believe that my ADHD coupled with a healthy dose auf autism makes me love all the little fun facts, nitpicks and details of a lot of different fields and subjects.
I am a fan of astrophysics, mathematics, engineering, gaming, music and history. That's why my pool of knoledge sometimes feels more like a very shallow puddle that still manages to cover the entire street :D
Like, one time I laugh about a really involved joke from some video about music theory, and the next moment I am geeking out about a small detail in some part of algebra, that I don't and probably never will fully grasp. BUT: It's enough to get the jokes. I love that. :D

About the "why in english?" question at the end, have you considered simply doubling your entire workload [and some extra!] by doing all of it over again in german as a second upload? Surely there are no downsides.

So there are 2 mods that absolutely fix this issue. One called 'Fluid Awesome Sink Redux'. That lets you sink fluids and get tickets but used in conjunction with 'Fluid Sink and more' (which has an overflow valve where you can just sink excess when a Fluid Buffer fills up). I use those 2 mods and can finally sink fluids and filter to only sink very little by using overflow. I know, some people don't want to use mods, but I have no problem with mods.

Its probably because of the update but the Headlift reset design does not work for me, maybe i did something wrong but when leaving the server or going somewhere else when i come back the water output of the refineries are full and everything stops working, now VIP Junction seems to work but it might still fail with missing input test but that won't be the case in my build unless there is a total blackout but then more is just burning than the aluminium production.

Do you have any method that works on long term games? The current issue isn't dealing with the overflow on paper, its dealing with it in reality where the game duplicates the water slowly over time and clogs the machines. Do you have any that work when the waste water is constantly increasing little by little?

I think I want to hold off on making any definitive statements until after 1.0 and whatever changes they are doing to the fluid simulation then (and possibly in later followup patches).
