    This video may have just saved me a few hundred bucks! I just switched to the Ronin from the Crane 2 and I was beginning to think I had made a huge mistake. It was so inconvenient to switch plates during a shoot that I wouldn’t use it. I just wanted to dump it and go back. Thank you for giving me another solution!

    So..today I was going over this VERY issue on how to solve it. It looks like this solves two issues. Moving a camera on an off while being able to use zoom/ focus quickly(connecting 3 cables), and two it makes it easy to move to tripod with a solid mount. A++ !

    I've gone down the same road with the Manfrotto mounts as you , Bryan. I've always liked being able to quickly move cameras to and from a tripod, jib, gimbal, etc. I'm glad you went over this in detail. It clarified my purchase decisions. Thanks!
    For the last year, I have had a permanently mounted BMC P4K on the RS2 with a 10mm lens and the 3D Focus. I literally never take it off, so it's always perfectly balanced. But I now have a C70 and R5C and would like to use one or both of them on the RS2. Like you, I hate, hate, hate having to take plates on and off. I'm not in love with the idea of adding unnecessary weight, but it's a small price to pay I guess. I went this exact route with the very original Ronin 7 years ago!

    just got the 577 quick release plate for my rs2. I'm using the Zcam and everything lines up ok but I have PL lenses and that single point of connection to the arca (1 screw) doesn't do it. The camera will turn side to side enough to displace away from the focus motor - I'm sure others have that problem as well. So now with a solid connection the camera won't swivel on the x-axis plane and the focus motor (with the SR focus motor rod mount) staying connected - I should be good to go. I've MADE it work up until now, but it's super annoying when the focus gears stop being in contact and I have to stop, line it back up and repeat the shot only for it to happen in the next take or a few takes later. My tripod is already built for a manfrotto style plate so I don't really need to do anything else, same with my shoulder mount. Great job articulating the problems and solutions!

    Thanks for this, one thing that I'm stumped by but nobody else seems to mention - To slot into the RS2 whether using the standard baseplate or Smallrig you have to mount the Arca Swiss plate on to your camera at 90 degrees, 'sideways' if that makes sense. This means when I then try and mount my camera on my tripod or shoulder rig, I have to also twist those baseplates 90 degrees, and then the tightening mechanism is on the wrong side (in front or behind the camera, rather than to the side), and it doesnt even fit in this orientation on my shoulder rig. It seems very unusual to me, why is nobody else mentioning this? Any thoughts?

    The other problem is: it doesn’t even fit all Arca Swiss AR plates!

    Hey this is such an awesome video, I have the Blackmagic 6kpro and my only question before I buy these accessories is this… does it allow the camera to move left or right to micro adjust balance, with the original plate that comes with the RS2 allows me to slide my camera to the left which prevents it from hitting on the tilt motor

    • @DeafDirector
      @DeafDirector  2 роки тому

      Hey Odane, this plate is amazing if you are a Manfrotto user. If you really need to get side to side adjustments, I would recommend getting another SmallRig accessory (amzn.to/3gBqmGp) in addition to the baseplate. I did a review of this if you are interested in seeing if it would be right for you. ua-cam.com/video/fWrC3T1kl1A/v-deo.html. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!

    I've gone the other way. Every Manfrotto plate I have has an Arca Swiss clamp attached (120mm for secure mounting) and every camera has an Arca Swiss plate (one is 300mm long to provide long lens support). This means I can switch from tripod to gimbal (no rebalancing needed), to slider, to whatever, in seconds. This makes all my cameras compatible with a single mount system. All the Arca Swiss clamps/plates have a safety mechanism and can simply be dropped in and locked. As a long time still photographer now into video, I just found the Arca Swiss system much better and more versatile than Manfrotto.

    • @DeafDirector
      @DeafDirector  3 роки тому +2

      Great point, Australian Image. I think the key is having the versatility to be able to jump on and off a uniform system. If Arca Swiss works for you and your system then that rocks. The smaller surface area of the Arca Swiss did present me with a bit of a headache with a lot more micro vibrations on the gimbal with bigger cameras like the C300. I personally was able to drastically reduced these micro vibrations with the greater surface area of the manfrotto plate. Have you had any problems with this?

    • @AustralianImage
      @AustralianImage 3 роки тому +1

      @@DeafDirector I had that issue with my BMPCC4K (a svelte 4.2kg rig) on my Crane 3s, until I added a 120mm Arca Swiss clamp to the Manfrotto plate. The camera plate is 180mm long, as it also supports the lens (locked into place with zips ties on a Y-support bracket), and the long clamp with double screw mounting makes the assembly rock solid. I tried to like the Manfrotto system, but couldn't find long enough plates for what I wanted to do, so went back to Arca Swiss. I've never had to do so much DIY until I started doing video.

    • @DeafDirector
      @DeafDirector  3 роки тому +2

      @@AustralianImage Ha, ha, I know what you mean, DYI seems as much a part of the game as figuring out your aperture in the video world. Thanks for the heads up on the long Arca Swiss plates. I'll be checking that out. Have fun shooting out there!

      @@DeafDirector Smallrig do a larger arca swiss plate with 3 screws 1x 3/8th 2 x 1/4 20 this means you can get 2 screws in and never have the plate twist. But, one problem with the RS2 arca swiss plate is its narrower than most other clamps so you can't just use any old arca swiss plate. But since most of my arca swiss clamps can screw in enough that's not much of an issue, it is a bit annoying that one of my cages with built in arca swiss still needs a plate screwed to it.
      There are a couple of other options available that can be even quicker there are a couple of battery type mounts one takes a couple of npf batteries the other plugs a v mount into it. via dtap the one with the npf batteries has a built in arca swiss , the other could be attached to any qr plate. So you might just drop the battery handle and move straight over to your tripod without undoing anything but the battery grip. just have the camera on the gimbal you could even just lock the gimbal off if you wanted. The rs2 has a lot of possibilities especially with active track and the 3d focus.

    • @RomkeRozema

      So just to be sure: the DJI RSC2 plate fitst the Arca Swiss clamp. So putting a Arca Swiss clamp on a Manfrotto (BeFree) baseplate allows not to make any adjustment on the DJI gimbal?

    This solution was exactly what I was looking for! You explained the solution so well. I have the same issue with the C70 and an oddly-shaped (but awesome) CN-E lens. Do you know by any chance whether one can also install the unit on the opposite side of the extended Smallrig plate? Just curious to see if it’s possible to install two focus motors (one would be for t-stops).. Thanks !

    • @DeafDirector
      @DeafDirector  3 роки тому

      So happy to hear that this helped. I would love to see a C70 on the RS2! The Ridges on the plate allow you to install focus motors on each side of the plate, but it gets a little crowded on the interior (Motor) side. One thing I like to do if you need more than one motor is to get a Rhino Mount (from RedRock Micro) in the cold shoe at the top of the camera and mount the second motor from above. Hey Casey, I couldn't live without it. the plate is an essential part of my kit, now. I saw the reviews on B&H and they leave me a little baffled. Great video, but does skip one factor that this really solves, the single screw mounting system! You spend your whole shoot with the RS2 out of the box setup tightening them because the pressure of the focus motor pushes on the lens, so loosens the screw and then you have a wonky camera (and that lens strap they supply is pretty useless). So def. going to get this setup as really noticed how solid the whole thing is.
