2018 Hyundai Accent Review / Comparison

  • Getting the right balance of features, value and "premiumness" is tricky business, especially when it comes to the least expensive vehicle in your lineup. Fortunately for the all-new 2018 Accent, Hyundai got things just about right, although I think it's an odd move to not send the hatchback to America. More on that in the video of course...

I love this little car. It is just so well designed and logical. Don't think of it as a small car; think of it as a very large, luxurious and comfortable motorcycle.

  • @alliejr

Impressively premium. It's inexpensive but not "cheap", both inside and out. The hard plastics look relatively premium. The simple interior design is classy and Apple CarPlay is a great bonus. As basic transportation, I think this is hard to beat.

Bought a Accent SE manual a month ago. Very happy with it. Car much better then the 1999 Accent I bought new. Averaging 41 MPG at an average speed of 35MPH so not highway driving. Got 4000 miles on it already. Hope I can get over 200000 miles on it like my 2008 Sonata.

Great review as always Alex! Your videos are always a joy to watch even though I'm not in the market to buy a new car.
This looks pretty nice for a entry level model, projector headlights, LED DRLs and taillights, push start, driver assistance features, even AndroidAuto and Apple CarPlayay! Toyota and Lexus models are now just getting CarPlay, not even AndroidAuto!
Its nice to see these features coming down lower end models. A couple years ago models in this bracket were really bare bones.

Great review Alex! We bought an '18 FIT EX-L for our daughter in college. We like it since it has collision avoidance with automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, leather seats, Android Auto/Apple car play, side mirror turn signals, & huge space in the rear for passengers and those magic seats that flip up. It averages 33 mpg combined since it only weighs 2650 lbs. Down sides are engine noise, and headlight brightness. This new Accent is very comparable at a lower price compared to the FIT, and we are looking at this for our other daughter about to enter college. Nice to see so many premium features are included in economy cars nowadays.

I can attest first hand that the Versa is absolute garbage. Poor build quality. The transmission won't make it 100k miles. The driver ergonomics are really lousy. Don't be lured in by the low price. Spend a little more money to buy a superior subcompact such as the Accent.

I watched a few reviews online and found the interior was pretty good at the upper trim levels.
To bad I live in the philippines and Hyundai did us dirty.
Interior from the least expensive to the most expensive versions are the SAME.
AND WHO MAKES AIRBAGS AN ADDED COST TO OPTION.
The only redeeming this about the top trim is the diesel engine but thats about it.
    So disappointed.

Why didn’t you mention the Mitsubishi Mirage - Mirage G4 it beats them all in leg room (G4). The Mirage G4 even beats the Versa by like 0.2 inches (Mitsubishi & Nissan Website Specs). The Mirage G4 may not be the car for everyone but I love mine and you can get one thousands cheaper than this and the same warranty.
The top trim G4 SE I purchased new had an MSRP of $18,115.00 and with rebates and discounts I paid $12,714.00 and you get automatic climate control, auto dimming rear view mirror, home link, heated seats, push start, keyless entry and keyless access or driver door and trunk, pw, pl, pm, apple car play android auto, outside temp display, rear seat fold down arm rest with cup holders, mine has front seat arm rest and console (fold down arm rest standard on all 2018 upper trims), alloy wheels, fog lights, and much more. Sure its a 3 cylinder and is not powerful but its a comfortable feature packed roomy subcompact. I have owned 2 Mirages now (2015 Mirage ES, 2017 Mirage G4 SE) and they have both been trouble free and get amazing gas milage. The base model Mirage G4 goes for $10,500.00 - $11,500.00 at Renn Kirby Mitsubishi and base model Mirage hatchbacks can be had for under $10,000.00!!! The Mirages have proven to be very reliable by owners since they came out in 2013 as a 2014 model.
I love this new accent its a sharp vehicle and I like interior and exterior styling. We always purchased new Kias and Hyundais every few years (2002 Kia Rio, 2003 Hyundai Accent GT, 2008 Hyundai Sonata GLS, 2010 Kia Soul Exclaim, 2013 Hyundai Elantra GLS) until we switched to Mitsubishi in 2015 and we now have our 2017 Mirage G4 SE and 2016 Outlander Sport GT AWC.
Good job Hyundai this is a sharp lil car!!!

I rented a 2020 Hyundai Accent SE and if it has a CVT transmission, it drove nice and for my trip and the dash showed average 50 mpg. It only took 4 gallons to top tank off for me after a trip. I enjoyed driving it, wasn't boring, my trip was highway and city. I rented a Versa a month later and was totally turned off of that car.. The CVT in the Versa was numb and boring, it didn't match engine well, Versa seemed heavier and gas mileage was not as good.

I don't fully understand the appeal of a subcompact sedan. Why give up the cargo space and rear headroom in an already small vehicle? The hatchback variants are superior in terms of overall packaging, and I think they tend to look better. I wish the US market got the hatch. For what it is, the sedan looks very nice. Can't be said for the Versa, Fiesta and some other subcompact sedans in my opinion. I think I'd get a Rio hatch or Fit.

I have an Accent 2007 with 230,000 miles. I just did a trip of a thousand miles in one stretch. The car drives the same way it did the day I bought it but with that kind of milage in it already, it may be time for a new car. I am considering sticking with the Hyundai Accent but I don’t like the front grill in the new models. It looks like a gaping mouth and it will collect all kind of dirt and dead insects after a long trip - too messy. I wish they had better taste in design.

Isnt the Honda FIT classified as an MPV or minivan? Looks just like a minivan. Didn't realize they call it a hatch. Definelty the ugliest in the group, not the Yaris iA

it's a hatchback with enormous cargo capacity due to the magic seat configuration. nobody sees it as a minivan.

Americans don't like hatchbacks because they're so dorky looking. Our hatchbacks have to be beefed up like a baby SUV.

Hyundai and Kia "struggling" with fuel economy is a nice way to say that they got caught cheating on EPA tests, but still consistently fail to meet EPA estimates in real-world fuel economy.
I'm surprised Ford and Hyundai's fuel efficiency scandals are so quickly forgotten, but Volkswagen's isn't even though most American's don't drive diesel.

There's a difference between overexaggerating or your fuel economy numbers and straight up using defeat devices during tests but okay sure

Due to Bidenomics this will be my new car tomorrow and now able to get 40 mpg. Will be my daily driver while the SUV does any hauling or Costco runs. While everyone cancelled subcompact cars, Hyundai is laughing all the way to the bank.

Hyundai's are NOT reliable to this day even the most modern ones. I know that there are some families that have owned them for several years, and haven't had any issues but I guess it depends ob what model you get.
