Cross Stitch #23 - Pin Stitch / Pinhead Stitch Tutorial

- I would like to share this tutorial I found when looking for ways to stitch isolated stitches. The Pin or Pinhead Stitch is a way of anchoring a stitch using only the space occupied by that stitch! You can use the Pin Stitch to start your stitching, finish your stitching, or a combination of both!

It can be used on Aida, Evenweave or Linen using stranded cotton, silks and even metallic threads.
Helpful for:
*Isolated stitches
*When you can't start with a loop method due to an uneven number of strands, or when stitching with silks or variegated threads
*Reducing bulk at the back of your design due to many colour changes
P.S. At once stage I mention I'm stitching on 28ct Lugana - I should have said Linen!

I’ve been cross stitching off and on for about 50 years, but never came across the pinstitch. Thank you for making my stitching life easier. Also, there are charts I love but wouldn’t attempt because of the hassle of too many orphan stitches. Now I can do anything. ❤️

I just started stitching again on a 15 year UFO that had isolated stitches. Now I can take out those old stitches (and the carrying thread) from this very open linen and have a much neater end project. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and tips!

This was an amazing tutorial!!! I will be referring back to it for sure. I love that the pin stitch eliminates the need to run thread under the back of your work. Now I know that you can even end with a pin stitch under a stitch if needed. Life saver!

I have a tiny tip of my own. I work on 14 ct. Aida with a size 24 needle. I have trouble hitting the exact area for this stitch so I go to the trouble to unthread and retread on to a chenille or regular embroidery needle (anything with a sharp point).to do the pin stitch. I use this more for ending and will use the chenille needle for the whole stitch if it’s just one.

Thank you so much for posting this video and explaining how to do a pin stitch. I only recently discovered your stitching videos, and had never before heard of a pin stitch. Using pin stitching for beginning or finishing a cross stitch in cases of confetti or isolated stitches is GENIUS!!! I wish I had known about this years ago!! I've really enjoyed watching your video.

I have been using this frequently now to end my stitches. Another floss tuber showed a variation to start the stitch by coming up at 1, down at B, up at 2, down at B then up at 3, down at 4. Basically the first half cross is the anchor. This seems to work very well too especially if not able to use your front loop method. Thanks again for your fab tutorials.

Ella Hanzon Designers love to include isolated stitches on their charts, us stitchers don't especially love them though! Now there is a solution.....yay!

Thank you. This is a complete game changer 💖 no more messing around finishing threads on the back. I'm about to start a more complex (than I've done before, anyway 🤣) full coverage, this will make things so much less bulky on the back.
Thanks for the great tutorial. I recently read about pin stitching, but was confused. I'm more of a visual person, so your video was very helpful in understanding it. I will have to try it out when I do isolated stitches. I won't have to avoid patterns with one stitch here and one stitch there.

Thank you for sharing what you learned regarding the pin stitch. I saw a different tutorial however she did it upside down from you and cut her threads on the top side of her work. When I tried it that way it left little tufts of thread on the front of my work. This is much cleaner. Thank you Happy Stitching!

Hi Carolyn! Thanks so much for showing this. I'd discovered this stitch about a month and half ago, but just haven't had the chance to test it out enough to feel comfortable recommending it to everyone. The one I found is slightly different, and it only shows starting the thread, which I was very happy about given how much hand-dyed floss I will be using in the coming months. I prefer my way for starting when doing more than one stitch because it looks no different than the normal stitch next to it. Yours is perfect for the isolated stitches as you've shown. Bravo!
Tricia - the left-handed stitcher Thanks Tricia :) There's a different technique to finishing it too, but this way works and I didn't want to confuse people. I guess I've sparked an interest and hopefully people will do their own research to 'tweak' it the way they like.

Thanks so much for this tutorial. This is a new stitch for me but I will be using it alot. So, much easier then trying to hold a tail on the back & catch it. Plus very neat so your back can look as good as your front using this. Great tutorial even for a beginner.

Thank you so much. This will really help when I try do cross country stitching on a HAED. I prefer to work the least stitches first and work up to the ones that are the most stitches to try keep the back a bit more tidy. Will definitely enjoy using this technique for that.
Stitching In SA I think it will work great for a HAED. When I read that it was good for lots of colours, the HAEDs were the first thing that came to mind. I hope you enjoy using it.

There are various stitching techniques you can try with HAEDs... personally I prefer parking and I start with the loop method, but of course it does all depend on how many strands of thread you are using. There is also the waste knot start, which is new to me, but I'm trying it out for the first time tonight.
