I want to transition to linen since a major goal is to stitch historic sampler reproductions which often call for specialty stitches that work much better on linen. Great video! I think I understand it now. I will have to get me some fabric and give it a try. Now to pick a pattern that doesn't have too many color changes. Can you show how to pick up/start the next color thread in a pattern?
I'm so glad it was helpful to you! :) For a color change it would be the same as what you see in the video. You'd either start right next to a stitch you've already completed (above, below, or beside), or you'd count away from the stitches several spaces to start it if it isn't next to what you already stitched. I hope that makes sense! :)
Thank you, Stephanie! Now that you mention it, I think you could zoom in that much with your phone when you're stitching. Just get something to hold it (I use a product called Canvas) and turn on the video recording feature--then zoom in with your fingers. You wouldn't have to hit record. You might need to tell your phone not to sleep in the settings then change it back after a session.

I was wondering about magnification. I am definitely having trouble seeing and it is making this "simple" project not very fun. why does it matter where the weave is when you are starting a project? I would also like to see how you have your set up for stitching. I am having pain in my hand (probably because I can't see it too well) but I can't seem to find a stand or something that eases my hand pain. thank you for this video!
I too, was wondering about the weave. I wonder if it matters on eve weave? I’ve just started stitching on it before delving into linen. As far as magnification. I wear bifocals normally and they weren’t great for stitching. Trying to put readers on top of regular glasses were a pain. I ended up taking my stitching with me to the eye doctor and having her prescribe a magnification that I could see to stitch. They’re still bifocals because I’m usually watching tv or Flosstube while stitching. I took the prescription to Eyeglass Warehouse and got 2 pair for $100. Totally worth it! 😊
I think the most important thing is just to be consistent about which thread you start over. I find that starting the way I showed helps me see more easily where to make the next stitch.
For magnification, you could try reading glasses, MagEyes, or a lamp with a magnifier. I've used all three separately depending on the project I was working on. Does the pain in your hand result from holding your stitching in your hand (holding a hoop/frame of some kind) or just from the action of stitching?
The only thing I find is that it can be a bit tricky to get the linen taut enough, so I start pinning in one corner, stretch the fabric diagonally to another corner and pin that, then pull taught across each way and pin. Then I pull the fabric taut at the center and pin at the center point between each pin and keep narrowing it down like that. Sometimes even with all my efforts, I still have to redo my pinning. :)
May I ask a question, it is so much easier for me to "count" holes as I stitch than threads. That seems to be sort of what you are doing, is that right? Will I get into problems if I do that? Edit: OK, I just watched the rest of the video and the section on counting is worth it's weight in gold. I was always confused by that but your example was great.

Would this work for stitching on a tea towel? I've been suing waste canvas but it gets so expensive to be using it constantly when cross stitching on tea towels.
I like to use linens that are from Zweigart. I also have some hand-dyed linen on my website from Forbidden Fiber, Fiber on a Whim, and Seraphim Fabrics. All of those dyers use Zweigart as their base as well. :)

I'll say that stitching 1 over 1 on 40 count linen would probably be too much, but something like a 28 or 32 count should be doable as long as you can see it well. I hope you like it! I don’t understand why it HAS to begin on the exact piece of line where the fabric crosses a specific way. What happens if the pattern calls for confetti or a stitch to begin later in the pattern on a bad piece?
Hi there! I like to make videos to help people, but not to dictate to them what they have to do. I offer them as, "This is what works for me"/best practices. If you want to experiment with starting over the opposite thread or if you just don't want to have to bother with thinking about where to start, you should do what works best for you. Probably what matters most of all is consistency in what thread you start your stitches on--staying with that for the whole project. I once got off by half a stitch in a project and it made it really difficult at the time to count and keep track of where I was and I didn't enjoy stitching it. To answer your question about what I would do regarding needing to stitch in an area of the fabric that had a flaw, personally, I would just start the way that I demonstrated, but move the stitch to the nearest area that wasn't flawed.

Great tutorial. When I started stitching on linen I counted three holes in each direction and after all these years I still do that. 😊

I count in 2’s even when going down… so if I need to stitch in the 6th space from a stitch I count 12 holes and stitch in the 12th hole

I am venturing out on linen from Aida. I believe it is called Monaco. That will be my very first. I forgot to mention it’s 28ct.

I stitch on 32 count typically. If you stitch on 16 count Aida, that would be equivalent. :)

What would happen if you didn’t begin in the right hole?
When I have done that, I made more counting errors, so the whole project got off in multiple places.
