*I love it **enjoyable.fishing** recommend I’m using it for my 1.0 Crankbaits and small Jerkbait. Paired with my Assassin. Works great, feels great. Would definitely recommend this setup.*
best explanation I`ve had on using these boards. Bought a few of them about 5 years ago and never used them. I definately will use them on my next outing, thanks!
In regards to using the PTD app....your line counter reels need to be calibrated, and line diameter must match your line selection on the app also. These two factors are key to getting your lures to run the correct depth, using the app.
what was that clip that you clipped the line to the board? I have those boards, but they just have a simple snap clip. Problem is, unless you use heavier line (20#) the clip won't hold the line, and in choppier water, it eventually pulls out as well.
In this video we were using 10lb mono. As far as leadcore goes, it all depends on the speed you are trolling and the dive curve of the baits you are pulling with it. Generally if I am trolling water less than 15 feet I don't run leadcore, however, that's just me! Here is a video I shot with Todays Angler a few years ago using leadcore: ua-cam.com/video/YyWUf7O8pc0/v-deo.html Hopefully this summer I can get out and shoot a more in depth leadcore video!
We reset the drag to a light tension without the planer boards peeling drag and when the fish strikes,, the reel and planer board give and lets the fish take the lure and turn and get hooked. Otherwise at the first feel of tensionl the fish will open its mouth and spit the hook . That's what we have found to work for us. David aka Superdad4sure
@@superdad4sure if you are trolling at roughly 2-3mph, and a fish slams that plug with 2 treble hooks, it isn't going to spit it, it should get stuck pretty good. It isn't exactly finesse fishing
Generally if you are on White Bass, it is time to move to a new spot. Another thing you can do as well is slowing down. The White Bass tend to like baits that are moving fast.
Would just a regular spinning rod work for this?? My dad and I talked about using planer boards in the Boundary Waters for YEARS....but for portability, we're somewhat limited to carrying in one or two rods per person in the canoe. The planer boards would be great for getting the line out and away from our paddles while we travel from place to place....another great way to put more fish in the boat:-).
Absolutely! Offshore Tackle actually makes a mini planer board (OR38) that is perfect for spinning rods and other light tackle applications. They are quite a bit smaller than the regular OR12's as seen in the video, and are very portable and packable!
Great explanation! I've always run lead core instead, dumb question but do you need to then take into account the line from the board to your reel? IE if thats an extra 10 ft the depth curve of the lure changes or does it start from the board to the lure?
Nope, the dive chart would be determined from the length of line from the back planer board release. Line from the reel to the front planer board release has no relevance to the baits running depth.
We have to agree with Pete. The only distance that influences the lure's dive is the line from the lure to the board. Awesome to see you run leadcore! It's a dying art!
That was good. Since the side planer is attached to the line, when you are pulling in the fish do you have a friend pull off the planer or do you do it yourself and how do you keep the tension on the line?
Ken, That is an EXCELLENT question! It does work best to have another person in the boat who can take the board off for you, that way you can focus on keeping tension on the fish. It certainly can be done solo, but it takes practice.
Awesome video man! Im new to walleye fishing and ill be trolling out of my kayak. I just picked up 2 trolling combos. I was wondering what kind of line, and what pound test? Also i noticed you have a swivel on your flicker minnow, what kind is it? Thanks a lot this video was very helpful!!
Thank you! Generally 10 to 12lb monofilament is what we use for our planer board rods. As far as the swivel goes, that is actually just a VMC Duolock Snap (no swivel).
Brian, It certainly depends on how fast you are moving and how big the fish is, but typically without the tattle flag system the board will drop back from the weight of the fish. That said sometimes fish (especially walleyes) will swim with the board after they are hooked so it can be somewhat difficult to tell if there is a fish (especially a smaller one). When in doubt crank in some line to feel if there is any added resistance. Worst case scenario you bring the line in, unclip the board and feel the line to see if you can feel the bait thumping or if there's something pulling back. Hope this helps!
Every lure is different so the dive curves vary. Some lures like Berkley Flicker Shads have a dive chart on the packaging, while others do not. The precision trolling data app is a great tool for looking up how much line to let out to get just about any crankbait ever made down to whatever depth you desire!
so when your fishing four rods in a boat dont be these guys... the two outter most rods should have planers on them and the two inner should not have planers. otherwise whats the point..
We are running 6 to 8 lines for suspended fish that are spooked by the boat. The boards not only keep the lines from tangling but also get the baits away from the boat to help prevent spooking fish. Sure, if the fish aren't bothered by the boat you don't have to run boards, however, the point of the video is to show how to use boards.

Glad we could help! Thanks for watching!
love it! pontoon fishing is the best

I think fishing might be getting a little to complicated..with all the fancy gadget’s, it’s taking the skill out of it.
This is a good helpful video keep it up and tight lines
Great video! I fish kegonsa a lot. I guess they’re gonna dredge the river
Hey Madison!
what was that clip that you clipped the line to the board? I have those boards, but they just have a simple snap clip. Problem is, unless you use heavier line (20#) the clip won't hold the line, and in choppier water, it eventually pulls out as well.
Great video can't wait to try planers. What kind of Rod holders are you using on your pontoon boat ?
WHERE do/did you put the BAIT/LURE??? I bought the Yellowbird version of this.
Hey we’re you using lead core, @ 45ft to get down near 14 FOW or regular braid. This will be my first season running leadcore so any info helps!

Can you use planer boards to troll three ways and crawler harnesses
Yes! You absolutely can!
Nice 👍
Perhaps you might adjust the drag such that a fish will not meet any resistance when it takes the lure??
The resistance is what actually sets the hook on the fish, so we do want some resistance in this case.
We reset the drag to a light tension without the planer boards peeling drag and when the fish strikes,, the reel and planer board give and lets the fish take the lure and turn and get hooked. I just night trolled for walleye on Lake Mendota two striped bass and one small walleye any tips on more walleye?
Generally if you are on White Bass, it is time to move to a new spot. Another thing you can do as well is slowing down. The White Bass tend to like baits that are moving fast.
Approximately what angle to you set your rods in the holders for 1,2 & 3 rods at a time?

How do you know how far to let out the lure BEFORE you put the planner on?
BTW Never used one and my buddy just got a boat!
That was good. Since the side planer is attached to the line, when you are pulling in the fish do you have a friend pull off the planer or do you do it yourself and how do you keep the tension on the line?

I Keep the trolling motor on until you I take the planner board off when I am by myself this way it keeps the tension on the line for you

What pole holder is that
How does your pontoon boat ride in rough water..???
The pontoon is a beast! It doesn't handle big water as well as a deep v glass rig but it's an awesome fishing platform in fair conditions.
How do you know how much line to let out to get to your depth

The precision trolling data app is a great tool for looking up how much line to let out to get just about any crankbait ever made down to whatever depth you desire!
What's the little tube on top of the planer board for?
The tube is actually a silicone sleeve designed to hold glow sticks on the board for trolling at night!
www.gokfin.com/accessories.html
What rod, power and action, and line are you using??
Les, typically an 8'6" Medium power, Moderate action rod rigged with 10lb monofilament is the go-to for most planer board walleye fishing.
Who the hell played that intro music.....
Would it work on a kayak for trout
Absolutely! Lots of guys do this on Lake Michigan for salmon and browns!
The Madison Angling Experience thanks i will order 2 planers and have 3 rods out thanks for the tips
I just find find your chanel great content Cool video! I just subscribed, hit mi back if you get a chance. Tight lines!🤘😉🎣🎣🎣
Looks like a mail box

World longest intro
you did not catch crap
The title of the video isn't "catching walleyes with planer boards" is it?
Where's your instructional video sfox?
S Fox😭
What the heck. 51 seconds of "Intro" before you uttered one work. Get real. I know it makes you feel good but come on already.
Thanks for the view. Makes me feel great! Also, I believe you meant to say "word" instead of "work" 😉
you didn't even catch a single fish wtf
Nope! But we got your view! Thanks!
Maybe redo the video title, how to troll for UA-cam views
Maybe spend more time fishing and less time "trolling" the internet!
