The Coasters, like the Drifters went through many lineups over the years but still managed to keep Carl Gardner and their iconic bass singer. But, in 1990, a group touring as the Coasters , even though they were good, were exposed as frauds. The guys oldest member was hardly 30 years old . John Beauman ( Bowser) of Sha Na Na exposed them on stage as frauds. Later Bowser went in front of Congress and helped get legislation passed that stated one original member of a group had to be in a lineup in order for the group to use the original name. Carl Gardner Jr inherited the Coasters and has legal rights to the name. This excluded tribute bands as long as they were licensed.
Hi Nina. My name is Bob bock. My grandfather was the road manager for the coaster s for over 20 years. Do you remember Wally Bock? I'm sorry your uncle passed. I guess leon Hughes is the only original member remaining.
Hi Nina. My name is Robert bock. Im am wally bocks grandson. My Nick name is badgee. My grandfather was hired to road manage the coasters. He managed them for over 20 years. I will have to ask my dad exactly how many years exactly. The most meaningful gigs they did that I remember were raising money for jerry Lewis telethon. They really poured their hearts out. God bless you and your uncle Cornell in heaven. Cornell was amazing!
One of my very personal favorites from one of the first & best of the rhythm and blues groups to cross over to the national charts with hit after hit & the first group to be inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame in 1987 along with their writer /producers Jerry Leiber& Mike Stoller
THE COASTERS PERFORMED AT MY WHITE ELEPHANT CLUB IN 1960 - HEAR 5 UNRELEASED ALBUMS OF THE WORLDS MOST AMAZING RECORDS AT "BOB MACK PLAYS RARE PITTSBURGH DOO WOP" #
I was in High School when this song was released. It was fun to listen to, however we had a student named Charlie Brown, who was a really nice guy. I felt bad that the song used his name.
I was 3 months old on the 9th of March, 1959. Wish I'd been born in the late 1930s so I could have enjoyed these great hits first time round. Way better than all that modern garbage we get now.
One of them is still alive! And he was still making music just 10 years ago. Good for him ... don't look up the rest. they did not die peacefully in their sleep by a country mile.
I was born in December 1966 I am 52 years old now. But I love that eta way before I was born. Those were the days, awesome and wonderful era nothing like the stupidity of today?
I envy you being old enough to be part of that wonderful time. I just got born and missed out on noticing and loving the music of 1958, the last year when Nobody was in Rock and Roll Heaven yet!
On this day in 1959 {Feburary 28th} Cash Box released their Top 100 Singles for the week ending on Feb. 28th, and for the first time Cash Box began using a red 'bullet' to indicate songs that were rising up the chart at a quick pace.. The highest position record with a 'bullet' was "Charlie Brown" by the Coasters, it was at #3 but surprisingly it moved up only one position to it peak position of #2, and that was also its peak position on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart... The three lowest ranking records with a 'bullet' were all in their first week on the chart; "Telling Lies" by Fats Domino at #78, "Never Be Anyone Else But You" by Ricky Nelson at #79, and "Pink Shoe Laces" by Dodie Stevens at #81...
I watched Bandstand almost every day, but never got to see the Beech-Nut show because my dad commanded the TV set on Saturday night, so it was usually something like Lawrence Welk.
Here I am 19 years old. The song way before my time. But it resonates this character Charlie Brown. Us clown got to stick together raise a little hell and shake the establishment. Or in Kinder words write on the Whiteboard.
Fun Fact: Part of the melody, if you listen closely, you can hear the notes from the beginning parts of this song that were the main inspiration for the country song "Achy Breaky Heart", another good song from the 1970s/1980s if you ask me.
Just an all time Classic hit single for the Coasters as it is Called Charlie Brown as it was a major hit for them in 1959 as it Topped the US singles Chaert for 3 weeks
I just love this song by the Coaster's and it is called Charlie Brown and it Came out the year I was born in 1959 such a great tune to dance to in the 50's
If he stop picking on his baby sister Sally, stop yelling at Peppermint Patty. Treat Linus and Lucy better, and feed more dog food to Snoopy, then yes he would be treated better. :)
On this day in 1959 {January 21st} Atco Records released the Coasters' "Charlie Brown"; six days later on January 27th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; on March 9th it would peak at #2* {for 3 weeks} and it stayed on the chart for 15 weeks... Exactly twenty eight years later on January 21st, 1987 the Coasters were inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame... As sadly, on January 21st, 1999 blues singer Charles Brown passed away at the age of 76; in 1961 his classic "Please Come Home for Christmas" reached #76 on the Top 100... May he R.I.P. * The three weeks that "Charlie Brown" was at #2, the #1 record for those three weeks was "Venus" by Frankie Avalon...
I was in the audience for this performance. So much fun!
Lucky you! I saw this on TV!
So fortunate!! American Bandstand was the bomb 🎉
Lucky, I was born way too late to see this performance live
Did you ever think you'd watch it on UA-cam? Pretty wild.🙂
That’s crazy! Did you enjoy it?
My poor parents had to listen to me play this record 20,000 times a day for weeks, and they never complained, God bless them!
Music today will NEVER compare to the awesome music from the 50's and 60's!! Love the songs 💖
Absolutely absolutely 😊😊😊
Late 50s through the early to mid 60s was the greatest era for fun and romantic rock and roll! 📀
At 1:52, that dude kicks up a mean Charleston! Thank you Dick Clark for these great ol videos!!

The archetypal class clown, immortalized by The Coasters! Classic tune -- thanks for posting!
My father used to play this in the 70s and in 2021 it’s still great 👍

The great, legendary Coasters. Rock-on!
The Coasters + the songwriting duo of Leiber and Stoller = Genius
Copy that.
I love this song. Brings back some great memories and the crazy kids I went to school with.

This song reminds me of that "Jack" movie starring Robin Williams, great childhood memories 🎩🌹
These guys were super entertainers. This made me laugh. Love the Coasters.
Man, That guy can dance!
Yo Mama what’s up how are you doing hope you’re having a great time with your family may God bless you and your family
Yeah he really can. Maybe he could give President Trump lessons in both dance and song. 'Why is everyone picking on Little Donnie ?'
@@hal511bmBecause he beat their socks off. Twice! 😂

When i was little, we had a record player and a bunch of 45's. This was our favorite. Played it a lot. Yakkety Yak was probably #2. Good memories
For sure. I had an old Silvertone (Sears) 45 phono and wore it out on Rock 'N Roll records. What a time.
I was born in December 1966 I am 52 years old now. But I love that eta way before I was born. Those were the days, awesome and wonderful era nothing like the stupidity of today?

My mother told me about this song that was back in her day and after seeing the video man that guy can dance!!!!!!!
Great band no matter what lineup. Mr. Earl (Speedo) from the Cadillacs joined them at some point in time. Love this video.
Was at a oldies concert in the '90s when the Coasters performed "Charlie Brown." One of my fondest memories.

Super popular in the '50's. Met them in the early '70's at a RR show in Chicago. Great guys and no big heads.

Just one of the very best tunes of the 1950's just so good even now than when it first came out in 1959

King Curtis rockin' on the sax. They had some great players on those records.
My 7th grade English teacher's given name was Hallie. My bud walked into the classroom & said "Hi Ho Hallie-O." Made her mad as a wet hen.
