He's talking about long term data storage or "cold" storage. Gig sticks left unpowered for a bit, less than a year, can degrade data to an unrecoverable level, while I'm sure we all have DVDs from the 2000's in our junk pile that work just fine into the 2020's. They still suffer from data rot. I recently got some new old stock 360 discs that were never opened and failed to boot, but unless you have a tape drive (yes that is still totally a thing) then CD & DVDs are arguably your best bet for cheap long term data storage.

As someone who as always found the preservation of media important, its really refreshing to see a take like this. Many of my own friends don't see value in and think it's weird I still keep a physical game collection, but I've always seen it as rewarding. The nicest thing is having a CRT TV that I not only play the PS2 and Dreamcast on, but can watch 4:3 content as it was meant to be (thank you Cowboy Bebop DVD collection).

My issues with DVDs mostly comes with video quality. I agree I love physical media, but more so blu-rays and 4K Blu-ray. On modern large TVs a regular DVD does not look good. Most of the time the video quality maxes out at 480p, which looks horrible on most screens, but especially giant modern televisions. I get that DVD is probably just being used as a blanket term in this video for any disc-based media. But there is a difference in collecting DVDs and collecting blu-rays

I legit make DVDs for my private collection as a hobby just so I can have content backed up and not lost forever (old webtoons). This format is quite important to me.

I prefer having the video files or BluRays (Full HD or 4k) instead. Sadly, in my country it's still more likely for a TV show to release on DVD instead of BluRay. In Germany the have even the recent seasons of South Park released on DVD, but nothing on BluRay :( On the other hand Ren and Stimpy released on BluRay in my country lol

you can pick up a cheap external dvd drive on amazon ($25) or you can get an external blu ray drive that’s much better for about ($90)
