UTAU Tutorial - How to do VCVs the easy way

I did this tutorial for people on UTAForum since loads always have trouble understanding how to do VCV otos - admittedly, while there are many tutorials, most are really confusing. I hope mine is simple enough.
This tutorial isn't for people who haven't a clue what VCV is, or how to use UTAU for that matter. I force you to make a couple assumptions, for which I apologize, but really, if you want to do VCV you need to do your research and understand what you're doing.
This is standard voicebank starting and otoing procedure for VCV banks. A tutorial for specialized otoing is linked below, but please have a sense of what you're doing before you follow it.
Please note I myself am admittedly a bit new to VCV. If I am wrong on something, please tell me.

7-mora encoded in romaji isn't really done.
There are other #-mora, but 5 and 7 are the most widely used and easiest.
To get rid of extra oto items, such as Rana's hanamogeras if you don't want them, go to the oto editor, right click on an oto, click the last option (With English patch, "select multi"), select all the uneeded otos by either holding down ctrl and selecting each or click the first then hold down shift and click the last, and then right click and hit the fourth one down, "delete".
Note that, if you aren't in Japanese locale, you're going to either have to do 7-mora romaji from scratch or copy a 5-mora romaji if you want to take the oto copy shortcut.
Feel free to ask questions if you didn't understand something or had trouble with a link, getting a voicebank, doing something I showed you, etc.
And please note I say please note a lot. XD

...oh my gosh, I had no idea it was this easy. I actually gave up on UTAU because VCV seemed too darn hard, but after seeing this, I'm definitely gonna give it another try! Thank you for making this and being awesomely helpful and such~ ;u;

I don't think recording the syllables is hard, per se. The correct word would probably be tedious. It took me a week to record but mainly because I was putting it off, but when I recorded it, it was relatively easy. Regardless, I thank you for this tutorial. I probably wouldn't be able to oto things like this by myself.

The sad thing is that I don't actually wake up very late (12 at the very latest), and I seriously thought it was the morning in that moment. Then looked at the clock to see that it was 8 PM. :'D

Excellent tutorial~! The only thing I wouldn't do is the copy-an-oto-and-edit thing. Sometimes it can cause problems under the right circumstances, and the most common problem is forgetting to edit one set of sounds because you think you already did.
Also, thanks for having Kenji as a reference to a 5-mora VCV bank! =) But is he really the best example? I mean, he's kind of on the list of examples of VCV banks along with Tei and Ritsu... which is awesome. XD; It makes me wonder if he stacks up.

@EmptyBlankAccount I can romaji translate Nana's/Taya's list again, so more people can use it. Mae made a variant for that... somewhere. LOKEs list. I think it might be different now though...
Oh, and OREMO has a reclist extractor now. You can direct it to any folder of WAV files, and it will collect the file names into a .txt document... I had done the Nana/Taya list before, but by hand so I missed some files, but with that I can get it correct in both romaji and hiragana for you.
@EmptyBlankAccount Actually, Kenji is a 5-mora lite list. XD Did I fool you well?
It's still the same principle though, lite lists and full lists work exactly the same way, save the fact that in a lite list, CV sounds are still used, particularly sounds with a consonant and a "y" sound. Also, anything after "n" is usually always a CV sound. owo
And I know, a lot of "ugh" VCV banks from overseas exist. XDDD Which is when people learn I figured out VCV on my 1st no-nonsense try they go "WHAT!?"
Ah, seems like someone already told you but it was a locale problem. Glad you got it all figured out!
@EmptyBlankAccount ...You don't get the point of reclists;;;
They are only to provide a list of syllables, you're not supposed to copy the voicer! This is why Nana/Taya/Shinji's list is good (and it's the same one list)-- The octaves don't count, you don't include those in the reclist (they're actually just suffixes) and the vowels are recorded the way you want to record them-- you don't need to copy Tayas to have it work.
@EmptyBlankAccount IDK, I know what you mean, it just feels like theres a better way to do it?
Like give an example bank + the reclist it used + That reclist in romaji + Metronome or Guide BGM, and say "Record off the reclist you want to use, if you're /stuck/ use this bank as an example. Romaji will need to be oto'd completely by hand, while SetParam or oto copying do Hiragana"
It feels like, when people don't know how to use reclists, we should teach them... I think. I just woke up so...
Thank goodness I understood THIS tutorial. But I guess My voicebank won't be as High-Quality as yours other but I think I can do it... Say, how many hours did you work on those voicebanks? xD
@EmptyBlankAccount Well, if all goes as planned, Kenji will be a full-romaji 5-mora as well, for his ACT 2 after I finish his CV-only version of his ACT 2. owo But 5-mora romaji full lists are rare, and there's a 7-mora one, but I'm not sure if it is accurate or not. ono
Oh yeah, UtaForum's been endlessly bugging up lately. Hentai, the moderator, is working on fixing it. I suggest checking by every day, he should finally get it fixed soon (and sometimes it sporadically works for an hour or two).

Did you follow all the instructions of the guide? Read through the thread if you're having problems, else may have had a similar problem and they may have solved it.

5mora... You downloaded Soras new bank, right? That one has add-on sounds that pretty much make it a Full Bank, so you can extract a reclist from that.
Then there's Hibiki Shinji's/Haruka Nana's/Soune Taya's Reclist, wich IMO is one of the best. It covers a lot of stuff.
There's also an 8mora list, and... a 3mora list, I think? I'll need to go link hunting.

A reclist? I'd just say reference a VCV bank. There are romaji-encoded ones around. If I remember correctly TATARI is romaji encoded 7-mora? But DON'T use him as a model for oto or recording style at ALL. The bank will end badly if you do (I'm suprised TATARI turned out so well with how many issues his bank has).
Maybe check out utaforum(dot)net in their Resources subforum? There's reclists there.
Great tutorial ^^ It's inspired me to make a VCV bank instead of a new CV one!
I was wondering if you knew what .uspec files were. They're accumulating in my VB folder as I record new sounds, and I was wondering if I should delete them or not.
May I just ask how you were able to get Ritsu's files to be perfect? WheneverI download it, it comes out in jibberish.
Oh.... I was otoing wrong. You're supposed to put the green line first and then the red line? Or is that just for VCVs? Are CVs otoed in a different order??
@EmptyBlankAccount This way you can tailor it to be comfortable-- you can change up the tempo and pitch, rather than copying a bank that just used a reclist, you can use that reclist as a very basic guide.
Reclists are a lot better than copying banks outright... If you need a bank to copy for basic otoing like you have here, though, Nanas should work. I don't know for romaji banks.
I tried the romaji one and literally the ONLY way I can do it is if I put the file as 'a' so it'll make an _wav one... if I don't, it says there isn't an UTAU project file... and when I got to Voice Configurations the Alias, Offset, Consonant, Cutoff, Preutterance and Overlap and LITERALLY BLANK! AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING WRONG! AND IT'S GETTING ON MY ACTUAL NERVES
Edit the settings.ini (by edit I mean add hex colours) and you're good to go.

Well, what about it do you not understand? The VCV or the oto? VCV sounds more realistic than CV because instead of being just the single syllable it also has the change from one to the next,which, especially with consonants that have a stop before them (T, CH, etc), makes it more like real singing. The oto works because, while keeping it in a fluid system that applies to all syllables/notes, it does that - has the previous vowel and the transition to make realistic singing. That help?

After you changed your locale did you uninstall and reinstall UTAU? You need to do that for the new locale to take affect. And then, if you had downloaded any Hiragana-formatted banks before changing locale, you're going to have to redownload them so they are in hiragana.
@EmptyBlankAccount i got even more confused...and i have tons of questions...i'll ask only few. So..i already have an utau, i asked people to do the otoing for me. i don't like how it osunds at all so i dicided this time to do with my own power. Hmmm.. choose a question...what are the names of ALL programs you used in this video besides utau

@EmptyBlankAccount Well, i just downloaded his "VCV 1.0" thing and put his .oto into my utau, and i'm getting some sound, the numbers aren't wonky, and now all i need to do is edit the oto. But since i'm copying his 1.5.1 recordings, do you think i still need the 1.5 .oto?
(Do you have Windows XP? That's the only system where it's really unreasonable to make it JP locale, all other ones it's an easy transition, even on MACs.)
You can do romaji encoded VCV. You can still get your bank aliased to use it properly, but it WILL be a pain because you have to copy/paste each one from another voicebank. Which with VCV may be very annoying.
@EmptyBlankAccount I finally figured out what happened; in the last step, it didn't save when I made new settings, so they didn't go into effect. I just redownloaded Ringo Boushi and she now works.

@EmptyBlankAccount yeah it is mojibake... everything i download that is supposed to be hiragana is mojibake. and i did set it to jp locale, i know i did. and i know this is gonna sound stupid, but can you even uninstall utau??? theres no uninstall.exe or anything in the folder.
ok i am sooooo confused. i downloaded some pre-made oto's, but theyre not in hiragana so they dont work. theyre not even romaji! theyre just weird symbols???? so i tried getting ritsu's, and some others, but the same thing happened!!! yes my cp is set to JP locale, but I dont know whats wrong... plz help

Did you oto correctly like I demonstrated? Then did you adjust the UST/syllables in the Note Properties like I showed? Check those things first. (This is EmptyBlankAccount, I'm just on my new account)

Oh gosh uh I don't know if you're still answering comments on this video, but I have a huge problem with VCV that I have no idea how to fix!! I recorded and oto'd the bank just like it showed, and it seems to work with some syllables, but a lot of them just don't play at all. I checked and double checked to make sure that I recorded all of them, and it seems to work until I plug in a UST, then all I get is mostly silence with a few working syllables. Can somebody help?

Hmm, is it pronunciation or otoing of them you're having trouble with? For pronunciation, you're supposed to not have breaks and make them flow smoothly, but quickly, into one another (so it doesn't slur). For otoing, use the S-map I demonstrate, adjust the bar per what you see, and move the beginning blue so that the red line is at the end of the change in the white on the S-map like I demonstrate.
i really hope this works for Mac because on mac you have to oto everything manually so it takes a long time to oto :(

Hmm. Well, after changing locale you should have uninstalled and reinstalled UTAU then deleted and redownloaded any hiragana-encoded banks you had before. Did you do that?

Hey~ when I opened both Zuii and Ritsu's .zip files, their .wavs were all written in gibberish. How can I change them to Japanese?
I think you need to unpack the file using 7-zip or something while changing the formatting to Shift-JIS. If that won't work, change the locale to Japanese (this won't change your system's language!) and unpack the .zip file.
This is because you do not have Japan set as your system local so basically it sees these Japanese symbols and tried to interpret them as letter and it usually looks like this: á:lŷdcłšńgânćd with some extra weird symbols in there
Um, are you trying a large variety of VCV banks, or are you saying this based of only one or two banks not working? I have no clue why that would be, because Ritsu is hiragana encoded so it's not a locale issue. What other banks are you trying?

Do you need to record an CV to do a VCV, or can you just do VCV by itself? I guess I'm confused because of the CV to VCV converter.
okay, i'm having a lot of difficulty with vcv recording and i thought you were supposed to not have basically any gaps and that they were supposed to be more strung together??? but... is that necessary given that Ritsu's bank is like this???
zappypup If you haven't figured it out already, no, it is not necessary. It is based off the otoing and on where you decide to start the syllable.
Agh my Audacity (I have the free version) won't let me import Ritsu's files :'(

I don't think so because you change it, but if you are unsure you can always ask the person you based your oto of ^-^
