  • This is my tutorial on recording/oto'ing breath sounds! This is more of a recording tutorial, since it's important to learn how to record the breaths before you can actually oto them.. I hope that this video is useful to both new utau users and veteran users!
    Feel free to add-on to anything I've said, and respond in the comments~

    Here are some forum posts I found while researching information for this tutorial. They cover more of the technical configuring of breaths, and hopefully they can help you with any other breath problems you may be having.

    Really good tutorial :) Some Japanese banks use "吸う" or simply "吸" for their breath sounds as well.

      Mostly its 息 since it means Breath in Japanese

    one usefull tip to record breaths that i found it really helps to make UTAU to recognize the breaths in a better way is: Record yourself saying anything (It doesn't need to be a full word btw, it could be random sounds) wait a few seconds and then, breath... If you breath out instead of breathing in, your breath can sound a little more high quality but that's optional, this method should work with all types of breaths. After you recorded your breath sample, put it in Utau and when you're going to do the oto configuration, just cut off the random sound you recorded, and then just oto the breath normally :) I found this to be very usefull for me atleast, i also noticed that a few voicebanks like Ritsu's (I suppose that it's Kire) use this method for recording breaths.

    For those whose breath sounds don't play, I have an easy solution. First, here's why your breath sounds weird. A breath is white noise and UTAU manipulates .WAV files to alter the pitch. It tries to find the original pitch of the note and alters it. UTAU does a pretty good job at this with actual lyrics. However, with breaths, it tries to find the original pitch when the file i just white noise. Thankfully I have a solution. Make a breath note in your UST and change the resampler to moresampler. If you don't already have it, look up moresampler (it should be pretty easy to find), download it, move them to your UTAU folder, (i.e. C:/PogramFiles(x86)/UTAU) and launch them in both your tool 1 and tool 2 box. Right click your breath lyric and click PROPERTY. Under flags put "u" as this flag will play the original file without altering the pitch the note is in. Or you could just sing your breath as UTAU can find a pitch to alter. Put your sung breath lyric in the pitch it was sung in. And BAM! You're done! Hope this helped! ^^

    Ummh, am I the only one here that just imports the wavs of the breaths in the mixing with the other tracks and fit them into the song? (Just like in vocaloid) I think they sound way more natural when I use the original wavs and without adding them as notes in the ust... or is it just me? xD

    • @shirahime278
      @shirahime278  6 років тому +3

      I'm sure you're not the only one. But this is easier for many and some people want their breath sounds to sound different in every song, with different lengths, with the ability to edit them for the song specifically.

    • @mckatherine
      @mckatherine 6 років тому +1

      @@shirahime278 mmmh, in that case I just edit them in fl studio, but now that you tell me the length thing, I think I should consider using them in the ust sometimes. Thanks for the tutorial! :D

    Whenever I'm recording a voicebank for breaths, I'm always confused what to label the different breaths. The current reclist I'm using has "br1, br2, br3" as the different kinds of breaths I should record. My question is, though, which br gets which breath? For example, would br1 get a longer breath, for more "relaxed" singing? Or a shorter breath for more "powerful" singing? That's my biggest problem right now...

    • @shirahime278
      @shirahime278  10 років тому +2

      I believe that's entirely up to you. Record each br sound differently, then when you see "br" in a UST you can shift+right-click to cycle between the different breaths and decide which is better.

      i know this comment is _literally_ 4 years old, but for anyone who is new, it *is* completely up to you, but, most people do this:
      br1/息1: a relatively longer breath, but not too long; only about 1.5 seconds max.
      br2/息2: a really quick breath
      br3/息3: similar to br1, but your mouth is in more of a wider "O/ahhh" shape
      the rest is up to you, some people record dozens of breaths.

    Anoanoano- can you help me? I've seen people slide notes by just putting a simple pitchbend connecting the two notes, but... my utau keeps chopping up her notes :c is there any way to make her sound more smooth and less like she's trying to choke herself out? I:

    • @shirahime278
      @shirahime278  10 років тому

      Does she have an OTO.ini? Sounds like she may have some issues with Preutterance, Overlap, and Cutoff.

    • @yoichistan420
      @yoichistan420 10 років тому

      Yess she has all of that, I normally just put the preutterance and overlap on 0, maybe that's it?

    • @shirahime278
      @shirahime278  10 років тому +1

      Masyn Foxx That could definitely be a problem. The preutterance marks the end of the consonant in your sound sample. The overlap marks where the sample overlaps into the previous sample. On soft consonants like "m,n,s" you want to have a little bit of overlap, while on hard consonants like "t, ch, k" you want some negative overlap. And vowels... Check out this site utau.wikia.com/wiki/Setup_and_Configuration and scroll down to where it says "Making the Oto.ini". Under that you should see some OTO-ing boxes, each box is a different way you should oto a sample. This particular method, I believe, helps utaus smooth more naturally like a human, because as we speak we tend to smooth together the soft consonants and emphasize the hard consonants. Feel free to ask me any other questions you may have! :)
