Hey all! I will be wiring this into the bikes accessory switched live ports! Wired to the battery for the video as that's how most would do it if their bike doesn't have an option for switched power. My XT doesn't stay on the bike (yet), but will when I have a locking mount for it to stay on the bike! Once that's on, I'll wire to those ports! Thanks for watching
Yeah, when I bought my XT, Touratech was running a sale on a bundle of the Zumo XT plus their locking mount. The plastic KTM GPS mounting bracket is a little wobbly under the weight of that heavy locking mount plus the GPS, but it's stable enough. No jiggling while riding anyway, but you can wiggle the thing around with your hand. A little closer to your neighborhood, there's a German guy who makes a really nice substitute for the KTM bracket out of CNC machined billet aluminum. It's super nice! I was going to order one, but at around $150 I thought better of it. So far, the KTM mount is working fine.
That billet one sounds very interesting! The KTM one seems to work well for the time being but I'm definitely aiming for the lockable one from Touratech!
I have a Tomtom Rider 550 and a Zumo XT. I would recommend sticking with the Tomtom if you're only road riding as the Tomtom interface is much better in terms of the information it provides. Also, the Tomtom MyDrive system is light years ahead of the Garmin system for routing. The screen on the Zumo is far better though
If you are going to the trouble to remove tank panels to run power line, you should have connected to the factory switched power supply ACC# line(s) to have it turn on and off with the bike. I did the shortcut and wired my Garmin XT to the front power source under the IC with is also switched power.
I've wired it to my hex ezcan now (in a follow up vid to this) but I wired to the battery so other people can follow the tutorial if they don't have that option. Agreed though!
@@SamVBikes Do you still use the Hex ezCAN for your Garmin? I am considering buying an ezCAN to save the need for stripping half the 1290 down to get to the accessory connectors. Yeah, I am lazy.
Looking good. A sat nav's a must for me, the last thing you want to worry about riding out in the sticks is your phone failing to find a network signal.
Great videos Sam. Moved from a long term GS to a 1290s and love it. I have followed your lead on the Sumo and hardwired to the battery. The plan was to connect it to the switched cables but I did not want to have the faff of taking half the bike apart. I then spotted two sets of connectors under the rear seat; one of which is switched and much easier to get to than other vids suggest. Just run the wires down the side fairing as you did add some cable to the batter wires and couple of 0.63 spade connectors and all done and working. Just dropping this should it help anyone put off by some of the ore complex installs featured on UA-cam.
Beautiful! Welcome to the orange side! Yes definitely an easier way of doing it. Mines now connected to my Hex EzCan but only because I had the spare slot so thought why not! Thanks for watching bud!
Hi not sure this as been answered.. But on power up instead of the usual white back ground... You'res was black.. Just like mobile phone settings in dark mode... Is this an option with the xt settings or model year production yours 2022?.. Thanks
Ok...I have a 2019 KTM 1290 SAR, I looked at the KTM mounting option and the weight of the GPS and Touratech lockable mount are too heavy for the KTM mount. So I have ordered the Touratech handlebar crossbar mount. I am in the process of removing the tank to run cables to the HEX CAN under the seat.
I've just fitted the Touratech lockable mount on a Givi rail. Haven't decided yet how to wire it in to the bike so would be really interested to see if you go with using one of the accessory circuits or if you wire it in to your Hex Ezcan? I've tried it a couple of times now and seem to getting about 3hrs (ish) on a full charge so it definitely needs a power supply.
Good to know about the battery. Definitely nice to not worry about the power (We have enough batteries to worry about already). I'm leaning toward using the Hex as it's there, and will likely make a vid when I do. Annoyingly the Touratech mount seems to be out of stock everywhere!
