Absolutely still relevant! Up where I live the cell service is spotty at best. Yes, you can use offline maps but….the Garmin craps satellites much better than the phone does. Plus you hit it on the nose: Garmin plus mount here in Canada around $500 Latest iPhone 14pro case and mount $1600
Dude, so agree! I’m on my second xt and I got one for my son to put on his Klr. Plus my xt has never overheated and left me trying to figure out a gpx track I was following in the middle of bfe. Love my iPhone and use it for my gps, google maps,as a truck driver everyday. When I’m in the woods I’ll go with the xt every time.
I had a Garmin Zumo! I thought it was crap. It’s on the side of the highway on 50 if anyone would like one. I have been using nearly every iPhone made on my handlebars and never had an issue, but my buddy put his iPhone on his bars and ruined it in ten minutes. I download the Gaia maps and go for it. I usually try to do enough research, so I think I know where I’m going when I leave. What works for one doesn’t work for another, I guess. The Garmin needs to be connected to your cell phone in order to do anything other than a generic map. SD card capacity is way too small to download everything you need for a trip. Thanks for the video. Garmin is completely obsolete, in my opinion, especially with the new SOS satellite service on iPhones. But most importantly, get out and ride. I understand why people like stand-alone GPS devices.
Great topic! I like that I can read my Zumo at a glance as opposed to leaning forward and squinting at my phone. I totally ruined the screen on my old Galaxy phone with burn in. Everything on the display is seen through a burned in Waze screen. I was told by several phone reps this is from direct sunlight exposure while running the app on my handlebars for tens of thousands of miles. New phone, Zumo XT, much better!
Great video, I learned a bunch. I am with you, phone NOT on the bars. My Zumo XT on the bars of 2 bikes and mounts in truck and the car. I find the dedicated GPS so much better for the purpose of NAV. And with the phone loaded up with backup nav information, I have a fair OH-SHIT option. I highly recommend using your nav device in your daily driver, being familiar with this device will make a huge difference. As a bonus, on my 1090 the Zumo is high enough for me to see it and follow with out "looking" at the screen. I guess "what you said" is all I had to say!
Same as Critter ... New Mexico spotty on cell service in the great ride areas. I've got a Montana but thinking of getting one of these Zumo's. From yours, Chris's and Ben's vids I always thought that was a Q and an A on the (I guess) open screen, not a magifing glass and pointer. Where do you want to go, and this is where your're going. Nice features.
I don't need a GPS to tell me when it's raining, the drops on my visor usually pretty good indication it's raining. I just buy a Trac phone ($50) upload GAIA ($20 Premium) and stick a battery bank in tank bag ($30) and I'm good to go.
My husband has the new ZumoXT. I stayed with the Garmin Zumo 396 on my Africa Twin and an older 395 on our DRZ. Not because I wouldn't want a XT, but because I do not trust my hands while holding it. Due to rheumatic problems I drop things easily, so I am scared I'll destroy the XT. The older ones are a little more idiot proof I would say. The best argument you gave is the last one. When something happens you have your phone on you. Useful when you have reception. When not, the GPS on the Garmin with fully installed maps work a lot better then any app on your phone. Only use the apps when preparing routes before I leave.
I agree 100 %. I have a Tom Tom ( should have bought a garmin ) but I love it. I use it on my trips and wouldn’t want to ride without it. It’s great motivation on longer trips because it gives you distance and time to your destination. Also like you said points of interest including gas stations
I definitely prefer GPS on the dash instead of the phone. If I know I'm going to go just a short distance, I will hook the phone to the regular spot. I usually leave the phone in my pocket with the Bluetooth hook to the cardo. One must thing to break or destroy out there on the dash.
The ZUMO XT is VERY relevant for an ADV bike. I have one on my T7. I don't think I'd want to use my Zumo ZT on my smaller dual sport bikes though, which are a DRZ and 450 EXC-F. Both of those bikes spend the majority of their time in dirt or trails, so I prefer my Garmin 478 for usage on those bikes.
Looking at one of these now. Was out last weekend and looked at my phone and was in a no service area..... also am just not a fan of the phone on the bars..... have it on there now but the quad lock is just not my thing I guess.
Thanks I have been going back and forth on if I should get a zumo or not. It is nice to get your opinion. I think the deciding factor might be mouting location or how to mount one to my bike.
At the cost of a ZumoXT i can have a rugged phone (which i dont need for photo or anything else but just as display), a quadlock and use Osmand+ and/or all the other software which are way more responsive, interactive and connected. The only think is still valid is the touch screen.
Which so called rugged phone can you have for the price of zumo xt $400? Ant it won't overheat and won't glare in the sun and can touch screen with the glows, and can have enough space forall maps to download, and the same speed if using satellite, etc. etc.
I like my Garmin Zumo XT but my god is it bad for searching for stuff. If I type in “Holiday Inn La Porte INdiana” for instance, it has zero idea what I’m talking about and just says, can’t find or whatever it says. I have to put in an specific address. The main think it’s good for is things like the GOS Kevin SIM cards or BDR gps files loaded into it.
Garmin does need to do an update of the software for sure. Search isn’t great unless what your searching for falls within the predetermined sections Garmin has setup in the apps section. Also Basecamp for planning……fairly clunky at best compared to, well ANYTHING else
@@ExploreAdventureMoto Have you tried using other route planning software to create and export gpx to the XT? Seen other people mention that in their reviews as a work around.
I tried the phone navigation for a while, the first time your phone shuts off for over heating, you will go back to stand alone units. I won't use anything but a real GPS, the Garmin software pisses me off, but none of my Garmin units have ever just shut-off because the sun was shining on them.

would like to see as in most cars apple car play etc.. so the bike just had a screen that interfaces your phone while your phone is in a separate safe location And allows full display of apps and interaction to them
I haven’t had the opportunity to ride any AT’s 2020 or newer (Apple CarPlay enabled) so I can’t give an educated answer. I have read however, many issues with connectivity with the IOS or droid versions of CarPlay on the newer bikes so take that for what it is. Also, a GPS works as long as it can see satellites. A phone (or CarPlay) is only going to work as long as there is a signal from a cell tower so unless a rider has downloaded all the maps needed to offline, navigation becomes difficult with a phone (at least where I ride)
First off…I just ejected my Samsung off of my bars on a ride in the boonies in north central Washington. Luckily Samsung builds a bombproof product. Did I mention my phone case is also my wallet?! I was not using it to navigate. I was running my older GoPro….which has footage of me walking back up a fire road picking up credits cards, my DL etc. Anyway…phone off bars is a real plus. The other part is for us guys who do our best to get lost in the boonies and often have zero cell signal, active GPS is a must. With Google Maps you will eventually lose function after you are out of cell range for a while. Sure…if you carry a Garmin inReach device for SOS purposes you can do basic navigation using Earthmate but that puts your phone back on the bars. If I was a road rider in range of cell towers all the time I would not spend the money on a GPS unit. That said, I think it is a must have for us ADV riders.
thanks for reply. i been burned in past by gps when track has an issue that i couldn't fix without laptop. ruined the trip and is why i switched to using phone. i bought cheap ebay phone to use as gps and when i have an issue i simply find free wifi and am on my way again. i want a new gps but has to be able to download tracks via wifi as i don't want to haul a laptop with me. struggling to find a gps that does this though. @@ExploreAdventureMoto
Why not just get an old phone that mirrors your current and stick it on the bars? Legit question. How is the Zumo better than that? Maybe the waterproofing but what else?
When I tried that, I had issues with my carrier with the doubled phone. Also since I didn’t have a “plan” for coverage on it, downloading all the tracks for offline use was a thing. The ZUMO for some of its quirks, just sorta works plug and play 🤷♂️
