THE MACH-E's BIG UPDATE: What's Changed

- Ford has just released a complete refresh of the Mach-E’s user interface, shipping on all 2023 vehicles, and coming to your Mach-E via an over-the-air update soon.
In this video, we’ll go over what has changed - and whether or not this change is good. So join me on a recent rainy Northern California day for a complete walk-thru of the new Mach-E user interface.
What do you think about the new UI? Was it a bit shocking when you received it without any tutorial? Would love to hear your thoughts below!

Nice overview! One change I noticed was that the seat warmer setting can be changed both with the knob and with a tap. The old UI had the slider and tapping the icon just brought up the slider and then closed it so it's nice Ford listened to feedback to dump the slider and give us both taps and turn knob.
I like everything except the removal of my widget tiles… why remove the option to have them big? I want tire pressure and drive energy and radio info and others always on while I also see the big map… this needs to come back as an option!
Yes, let the user decide if they want it big or small
Nice overview. I completely agree the tactile feel is important for safety and ease of use - so bringing this back and going away from the trend of touch for everything is definitely good. You are right - a fully touch experience for most everything means one's attention is focused on trying to keep your fingers on the control, rather than the tactile feel to be able to keep ones eyes on the road.
I enjoyed the presentation. There were two items that you didn't discuss that I wanted to make other viewers aware of. The first is that the fan speed is also controllable with the knob. You did show this briefly at the beginning, but didn't discuss it.. The second is with the USB media player. Yes I'm old-school... I have all my songs as MP3s on a single thumb drive. The USB media interface is better. It used to show the first three songs of an album or playlist statically and you'd have to scroll manually once it passed that 3rd song. It now scrolls automatically from song to song so that the current song is always visible. The one downside to the USB player is that the car doesn't always remember that it was being used, so when you turn the car on after it had been parked for a while it usually goes back to the radio.
Nice summation of the update. However, I liked the large widgets and the split screen (map/audio). I could get the necessary info at a glance (tire pressure, kW/mile) without having to change the screen. Now I have to select the widget, get the info, and then switch it back. There isn't enough info in the 'tire pressure' and 'this trip' to warrant a full screen. If anything, allow owners to view multiple widgets simultaneously. Obviously, this reduces the size on the display, but we can determine for ourselves what is most useful. This at least should be an option.
Excellent video. Thanks so much! Can’t wait to receive the update.
BCB from the mach e forum. Just wanted to like it here as well. This is an outstanding video. Thanks!!!!
Can’t wait to get mine!
Great overview. I love the update!
I liked the informative widgets. Bring them back, Ford!
Great overview of the new UI. Each individual change is kind of small on its own, but the sum of all of the little changes is a big improvement in day-to-day usability, experience and even safety to some degree with the utility they've added to the knob. When showing people my car, I would always feel compelled to say "yeah, you get used to it..." when talking about the touch temp controls, even though you never really do. I actually think the new knob-based UI is a fun and practical way to interact, and certainly justifies having the giant knob attached to the screen. (though I'd still prefer a dedicated tactile knob to control the temp, personally... but this is a big step in the right direction). Some bigger, better, more consistent icons would be nice, hopefully we'll see them someday.
Overall though, pretty awesome update!
great vid!...just got updated a few days ago...definitely a big improvement!...but here are my standout negatives...no rear camera access without putting the car in reverse...no way to record video still...smaller widgets are a good idea, but now they're practically useless...for instance, you can't look at the widget to see song info when listening to radio...i'd prefer a fullscreen option that you can exit to a split-screen and/or a screen with larger more useful widgets (like carplay does)...expanded knob use is a big upgrade...looking forward to more functionality for the knob
Thanks for this really good présentation. I hope we will have it soon. Unfortunatelly in France (and probably rest of Europe) we receive the 3.5.2.1 only mid january 23. But fully agree about you comments. Even if personnaly i like to keep the bigger icons in the tray so that i can monitor easily my consumption or my tire pressure without digging into the associated screen.
Great video & I like how the mustang has wireless apple CarPlay 👏👍🙏
Nice vid, thanks. I wish that a rear camera view was an option under the new camera tab. New UI does seem slightly faster. I didn't see the "don't limit motor peak power" button.
Really great update! Seriously, why have a tactile knob and not be able to use it. I have a Tesla and one of the most dangerous things is f**king with screen while you're trying to drive. Also, being bumped around while driving has you "miss" icons on the screen. With the knob, you can feel it and gauge how much you're moving it. BTW, I loved the Tesla until I got a MME, then I realized that an electric car can actually be a "real" car.
Hey, I really liked your video of the Mach E. However, I think the music was very distracting and too loud .
Thanks
Sorry about that
I like this new know. Bought them and they are worth it
The new interface looks way better and polished.
Nice vid. Thanks. I wonder when this might roll out to UK/Ireland.
The forums show that it isn't available via FDRS yet for any European cars, including some who are in the UK.
@@ev_kimchi not good enough. One of the main selling points was being able to keep everything up to date, not just in the states
I don't have the new UI yet but it seems like with the smaller widgets that you can't get your real time / current trip info / efficiency unless you go to a full screen?
Efficiency does show up in this new ui on the small card. The rest of the info does require you to click in now, unfortunately.
They should put the 3 drive modes on the top status bar.
I am on my way this weekend to pick up my 21 Premium. Do you know if this update is available yet for them? Love the video. Very informative. Thanks
if you're getting your car from a Ford dealer, ask them nicely to update your car to the latest software thru FDRS. FDRS is the dealer system that allows a dealer (or individuals with the right equipment) to update their cars to the latest software, much quicker and comprehensively than the OTA updates you should get. If the dealer doesn't update your car, you should already have this update by now through over the air updates. If not, you should insist on the dealer updating the car before you take delivery. Also, with a 2021 car, you have to have some healthy concern about your contactors. Ford used a faulty design for them and a normal car manufacturer would have recalled all of them proactively -- with yours, Ford will only replace them when your car fails and you (with luck) lose 2/3rds of your power. If you're unlucky, your car won't start and will need to be towed to the nearest dealer.
Great video, question. We just got our new Mach-E yesterday so it already has the latest code update. You talk about the camera button being in the top bar, our car doesn’t have that, is this an option in the menus to add it to the top bar? Also, can you change or force unique widgets or does it always just add the latest ones used? Thanks
unfortunately 2023 MMEs shipped with an earlier version of this UX apparently without the camera button. There is no update in OTA or the dealer tools (yet) to give you the camera button, but I would expect that sometime in the future.
@@ev_kimchi thanks, I did notice that when I pull into my garage, the cameras automatically come on, kind of nice.
I like the bigger tiles as well why couldn't they give us a choice.
Good summary! Could you please explain how we can set the profile photo for the driving profile? I have tried syncing my phone book and saving my profile photo as ford said but it doesn’t work. TIA!!

Hey, I dont have this update yet, see this video is from Jan 2023 and i have not seen this over the air update.
Im from Europe/ Belgium is this not available here yet?
Thanks for the video by the way
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't think that Ford ever rolled out this new UI in Europe (still!)
i have question, when im using my phone connecting via bluetooth on my sterio, i cannot hear the left side, what control do i need to control?
you probably need to adjust your balance -- while your music is playing, go into Settings, then Sound, then you'll see a graphic of your Mach-E on the screen, with a dot that controls the direction from where the sound is heard. You should see a "reset" button underneath the graphic which will restore the default, which is in the center of the car.
Will this update be available for 2021 Select models?
Sure will
Hubby’s talking about leasing me a yellow Mach-e when we trade in my Porsche Cayenne probably this year. This would be solely city car to drop off the kids to school, pick them up & do some work trips within Miami myself. We do have a beastly command vehicle for doing all the heavy duty stuff & trips, I do look forward to a futuristic car in the family! Drove a Tesla for a few days, didn’t like the blankness of it or how low it is, too easy to curb, I understand this is 5inches clearance, soooooo are y’all curbing it much? 😅
It’s orange, not yellow 😊
I thought I saw there was going to be a lane change assist option added while on bluecruise. Anyone see this?
Blue cruise 1.2 has the lane changing, but it only is available on 2023 cars and I don't think it is released yet. It is unclear if it is software only, or if it requires different hardware, so no one is really sure if lane changing will be added to earlier year cars.
Hi,
Hoping for advice. Just got a 22 GT Performance. It came with really old software. I called Ford and they insist I have the most up to date software for "my" VIN. It did do one update to get me to the Sept 22 version. Any way I can force the software updates?
Thanks
Unfortunately you cannot do this yourself. You need to find a friendly dealer who will use the Ford system to update the modules in your car. Or, you can go on the Macheforum.com and see if you can find someone who might be able to help you update your car. One of the laughable issues here is that Ford will not pay dealers for warranty work to unstick your car from their failed OTAs, so dealers basically won't help you. You need to find a TSB or customer program for the dealer to bill Ford under for them to do the right thing and update your car. Hope this helps -- but don't expect updated software really unless you pay $1000 for your own flashing rig, or um buy a Tesla (sorry to say it).
@@ev_kimchi it's updating one update every week since I bought it. Looks like Thursdays my update day. I think I'm now only 1 or 2 behind.
Nice video. Just looked at my MME and am still on 3.5.4. Boo!
There was a bug that had some cars "stuck". They seem to have not resolved this for another module in FDRS, so that might be what is going on for your car. booo!
@@ev_kimchi My car is at 3.5.4 too. Are you saying my car may be "stuck" on 3.5.4? I have no idea what you mean by FDRS or resolved to another module but will research. I have a 2022 that was manufactured only three months back.
I didnt get/notice any changes in UI not sure if I didnt get it yet or already got it and didnt notice?
You must not have got it yet. be patient and I’m sure Ford will deliver it via OTA to you soon.
You receive it by OTA or updated by FDRS ??
FDRS, although the update is rolling out as well via OTA.
Is it possible to update the old version to the new one?
Not sure what you're asking, but every Mach-E should have this interface at this point via over the air update. If you have a Mach-E that doesn't, your updates are stuck and you need to visit a dealer.
When it came to my car I got some other glitches. It wouldn't charge and the wrench came up telling me to go to the dealer. He must have rebooted it and showed nothing about what he did to fix it. A secret I guess.
22 gtp
What did the paperwork your dealer gave you say that they did? Dm me over at Instagram (link in description) and I might be able to help you figure it out
The functionality change is good, but it looks so bad when compared to Tesla or Rivian UI. Just a mess of colors and different button designs. Like why is the CarPlay button different than the home button.
Nothing that $1000 to an icon drive thru window wouldn't fix!
New icons on the top should be colored for which mode you are in. In dark mode, grey white button is jarring
UA-cam app available on the default system? @@
It is, but it is the slowest mobile web version of UA-cam. Don't expect much and you won't be disappointed. Much better experience to just take your phone out of your pocket and use that.
Did they fix the flakey Sirius XM presets? That’s the only thing about our car that’s irritating.
Radio? what's that? Sorry I don't know, I don't listen to Sirius.
The AM/FM presets are just numeric and stay in place. SXM has icons with the channel name displayed. You can select and place the ones you want. Trouble is, the next time you get in the car, they likely will have changed. Particularly irritating when the icon for Fox appears. Ford is aware of the problem.
What was the number of this update? 4.?.?
you should see this with PowerUp 4.1.2
What are the steps to add a profile pic, in my Mach E? I noticed you use a pic of mac n cheese :-)
it's a bit complicated, you need a contact with the photo you want to use that has the same email address as your Ford Pass account. www.macheforum.com/site/threads/adding-a-profile-photo.3549/
@@ev_kimchi Thanks for the link, I think I can manage this. I appreciate the response.
when I click out of carplay and then come back I default to favorites.. and lose my maps.. yours doesn't do that? Personally, I hate that I lost my icon view of trip and tires as well as the Radio. why take it away? when other companies allow me to split the screen into as many sections as I want ford puts a giant map.. I don't need that on my daily commute I know where I"m going.
Good comments / criticisms:
1. If you hit the "Phone" icon on the now-skinny widget row, that goes back into CarPlay, but loads the "phone" app. I think that's what you mean by "favorites". Tap the "CarPlay" widget (yes there's another one with that) or the new "carplay" icon at the top bar, and you'll go back to whatever screen you were on in CP. I agree, this is confusing and generally not what we expect to happen.
2. I think they made a tradeoff -- Ford has metrics that could show that more drivers left the screen with the widgets small. I agree with you that one thing the UI does not do well is show status of secondary functions. This could be solved by one area that the user could show these types of secondary status in. Typically other automakers will allow part of the instrument cluster for this, and this is another area where Ford could improve.
As for me, I have a horrible sense of direction, so I like MORE MAP .... You can also get some of what you're looking for if you're in CarPlay by keeping their "Dashboard" screen up that combines the map, media, and other recommended favorites.
UX refresh? 1990s Windows styling. I'm a UI designer. I can tell you this went backwards.
True enough, maybe you can make Ford some matching icons from this decade of visual design?
Music is annoying. Just feedback.
