  • Why is the island of Cyprus not a part of Greece or Turkey?
For millennia, Cyprus was inhabited solely by Greek-speakers, but in the 16th century it was conquered by the Turkish Ottoman Empire, and over the next few hundred years, thousands of Turks migrated there. By the late 20th century, both Greece and Turkey had their own ideas about what ought to happen on Cyprus, with the Greeks seeking "Enosis" or union, and the Turks, "Taksim" meaning division. Ultimately though, Cyprus became an independent state free from both countries in 1960, but it also ended up dividing anyway 14 years later.

Two community did actually live in peace before 1940-50s. Everything started of with the 'ENOSIS' idea, regardless turkey and US had a secret plan or not. Whoever started this ENOSIS idea, they simply did not want to share the island. All the following was complete reckless ideas; i) ENOSIS, ii) the way the British empire controlled the situation and, iii) turkey invasion. Whether all this was avoidable? THERE WAS NOT EVEN A SINGLE PERSON WITH THE QUALITIES TO AVOID THIS. Lots of innocent people (cy turkish, cy greek, british) lost their lives. Survivors had to start from scratch. Who is suffering now?

Cyprus is a greek island. Makarios didn't make illegally the 13 reformations . It was a little "window" in law that he used it ( the unhindered function of the state, that was obstructed by the Turkish vice presidency. Turkish vice President was clearly following the orders of Ankara to dynamite the political situation in Cyprus. The constitution was unfair. It would be the first time that a minority had the same rights with the majority.( except Yugoslavia, that there was s plurality (Serbs) not majority.). The only solution for Cyprus is the union with Greece ( the Turkish minority will have a special status of self-government and relationship with Turkey)

Maybe you aren't aware of the real part UK and USA took in this situation. Of course Greeks and Turks started fighting against each other at a certain point, after British themselves ignited inexistant fights. As for the USA, they manipulated the Greek Junta in order to do a coup d'état at Makarios. Turkey of course wanted the island too, so the rest is history.
P.S the british bases should be removed as in the Mauritius case

Something worth mentioning, most of the so called "Turkish Cypriots" are islamized Greek Cypriots ( see DNA research done by Cyprus University and North Cyprus University). The Ottomans being islamists had this method of forcing people in occupied areas to either change their mother-language to Turkish or change their religion to Islam so that they would enjoy the benefits that come along with it including relief from taxes. This method was applied all over the occupied lands and not only in Cyprus.

If google translate did its job properly then I have a few things to say about your argument.
Before I say anything, my heart goes out to you and all Greek/Turkish Cypriots who were the victim of ethnic violence during and before the invasion. However, your statement seems to be very one-sided. Brushing over the reason why Turkey invaded is also quite important. Enosis with Greece was forbidden when the country was founded, meaning it doesnt matter if a lot of Greek Cypriots consider Cyprus to be "another Greek island". Greece was successful in gaining control of the Dodecanese islands after WWII and perhaps thought the same would be possible with Cyprus. I see it as Greece trying its luck and flying too close to the sun, as the outcome turned out to be the exact opposite of what Greece wanted and more in the favor of the Turkish policy of "Taksim". I have respect for the people of Cyprus, but have none for the ultra-nationalist organization, EOKA-B, which could be considered a terrorist organization for the atrocities done during and before the invasion. If we are to look at history, we must look at the entire picture, objectively, meaning putting aside our personal views on nationalism. To put it frankly, many Greek Cypriots gambled dangerously trying to force Enosis with Greece and it backfired, so lets not pretend as if the invasion was "out of nowhere".
      Cheers.

There have been some minor episodes, where both the Greek-cypriots and the Turkish-cypriots assassinated members of the opposite ethnicity. Never on a large scale though - although the Greek-cypriots were the overwhelming majority in the island and they could have exterminated the Turkish-cypriotsm if they were some fanatic barbarians! But they were not!
They had lived side by side with the Turkish-cypriots ever since the Turks militarily invaded the island for the first time (in 1570 CE) and started massively slaughtering the millennia old Greek inhabitants of the island, usurping their lands and properties. The Greek - cypriots would be more than justified then to exterminate the numerically inferior Turkish cypriots in the island but they did not! They co-existed for more than four centuries with them - although the elder Greek-cypriots were painfully narrating to the younger ones the many atrocities the Turkish had commited in Cyprus!
So, it is a big, unethical and filthy lie when someone is telling that the Turks militarily invaded Cyprus in order to prevent the Greeks from massacring the Turkish-cypriots. A lie engineered by the Turks in order to justify in the eyes of the international community their violent, bloody, barabaric (and for the nth time) military invasion of Cyprus - and illegal occupation of the 40% of the island!

You could also say Britain made Cyprus joining Greece harder because of the Cyprus Convention
in 1878. This is if Britain didnt have control of Cyprus before WW1, Italy would of probably taken over by Italy. And then possibly ceded to Greece after WW2 due to Italy being an axis force. Joining Greece made lots of sence at the time, however now, Cyprus has a bigger GDP per capita than Greece. Im a Greek Cypriot, im proud to be Greek however more importantly I am proud to be Cypriot and have a flag under my name. I just want one Cyprus, where we can go back to our homes and not have a border separating races, it feels like a segregation

I will tell you what made Cyprus temporarily split. It's very simple. It's the fact that a small, defenceless, totally unarmed State happened to be in a geostratigically important position, next to a 100x bigger brutal and imperialistic state. That's the reason. Crystal clear.

    Two words “Turkish Invasion”

  • @FLORATOSOTHON
    @FLORATOSOTHON 2 роки тому +3

Makarios didn't just wake up one morning of 1963 and changed the constitution agreed in 1960. According to the original constitution, both communities had veto power over Government actions. The Turkish Cypriots used this to an excess vetoing everything the Cypriot government did and as a result the Government could not function. The end result was that Makarios changed the constitution and removed the veto right the two sides had. The result was a series of violent crises in 1963, with the Turkish airforce bombed the island and threatened an invasion, that was prevented by the US after the Soviet Union threatened to erase Turkey from the map. Again in 1964 there was violence on the island and Turkey threatened to invade and Greece sent an infantry division to Cyprus to prevent the Turkish invasion. There was more trouble in 1967, when Greece and Turkey almost went to war over Cyprus. Eventually the war was averted by US intervention and the new military government of Greece decided to withdraw it's division from Cyprus, after American guarantees were given and as a sign of good will for the sake of NATO. By 1974 Americans considered Makarios the Fidel Castro of the Mediterranean and wanted him out. Many think that a new military government that took over from the previous one some months before, was led to believe that the Turks would not intervene if they moved against Makarios,. Something they did in July 15, 1974, with a very bloody coup, but failed to kill or capture Makarios who escaped with the help of the British. The belief that the Turks were not going to intervene was so strong, that as reports came on July 19, that the Turks were loading landing craft and were sailing south, the response by the Greek General Staff was that they were on maneuvers and there was nothing to worry about. During the invasion, the Turkish airforce bombed the Island and dropped parachutists in Nicosia. The chief of the Cypriot National Guard reported by phone to the Greek General Staff in Athens that the Turks were bombing Cyprus. The answer was that he should not make jokes with things like that. When the Cypriot NG chief put the head set of his phone outside the window telling the General in Athens to listen to the bomb explosions and the shooting going on outside, he got the answer that he put his own soldiers to fire their rifles in the air, in order to stir up trouble. Later when Athens realized that an invasion was actually going on, the Greek dictator Ioannidis told the American Undersecretary of State Sisco: "You deceived us". This, along with the withdrawal of the division in 1967 after US mediation, led to the belief that Cyprus was betrayed by the Greeks and that the US was behind what happened. The Turkish invasion, initially had some appearance of legality since it was supposed to be action to restore the constitutional order on the Island. However as both military governments in Athens and Cyprus collapsed and Makarios returned to Cyprus, order was restored, but instead of withdrawing, the Turks reinforced their forces, consolidated their positions and launched a second offensive on August 14, 1974, taking over 36% of Cyprus, a condition that was condemned by 22 UN Security Council resolutions, but continues to this day.
In any case the Turkish plan to divide Cyprus goes back to 1956, with the Nihat Erim plan. This called for the initial takeover of the north part of Cyprus and the rest of the Island at a later date, when conditions allow it.

    1. The 2 communities are not very different, the only difference was religion, back then greek Cypriots were known as Christian Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots were Muslim Cypriots. Practically everyone spoke both greek and Turkish.
    2. Greek Cypriots were very divided on enosis. In the 50s yes it was very popular but a lot of leftist greek Cypriots did not want to be a part of Greece. Currently, the vast majority of greek Cypriots want reunification too, with people supporting enosis being seen as weird.
    3. Turkish Cypriots not Cypriot Turks. As a Turkish Cypriot, Cypriot turk or “Kıbrıs türkü” is very offensive cus it suggests that I’m a “turk of Cyprus” and not a Cypriot.
    4. You failed to mention that the brits hired Turkish Cypriots to police the island, and crush the enosis protests/riots which lead to the cultural division of the island.
    5. Taksim and the TMT was not popular amongst Turkish Cypriots (its even less popular now with only 3% of Turkish Cypriots not wanting reunification, let alone the tiny minority that want to be annexed by Turkey)
    6. Turkish Cypriots do NOT want to be occupied by Turkey. We do not like that we are being colonised by Turkey, and there’s more division amongst Turkish Cypriots and Turkish settlers rather than between Turkish Cypriots and greek Cypriots.

Some of these are lies. Neither my parents, or grand parents or great grandparents spoke Turkish. All of them considered themselves Greeks, not Christian Cypriots as you suggest, and this is the case with all older generations. Another mistake, almost all Greek Cypriots were in favour of enosis, including the left and communists, that voted in favour of it. Also taksim was popular amongst Turkish Cypriots while enosis was popular amongst the Greek Cypriots. I dont understand why you try to change the facts. Cyprus wasn’t united in the past. Greeks and Turks of Cyprus (as they considered themselves for the most part) were largely divided, hence the outcomes. Yes, today the situation is much better, but why do you try to alter the past and sugarcoat the reality of it?

What made Cyprus split isn't really a complex issue.
The majority ethnic group on the island decided to go full Hitler and try to exterminate a small ethnic group. That small ethnic group's big brother next door decided they weren't going to allow their people to be slaughtered like cattle and they reacted.
Now Cyprus is split. Will probably remain split until the major group on the island can prove it will control it's reflex to massacre defenseless civilians when given the opportunity.

What kind of lie is this? The "extermination" was just another propaganda to find an excuse to invade. The Greek Cypriots wanted to unite with Greece and of course that didn't sit well with Britain and USA. Just another country that got messed up because of them and their interests. PS: If you are looking for exterminators go look at Turkey, what they did to Greeks of Minor Asia and the Armenians or what the British did in India

Greek Cypriots are as Greek genetically as mainlamd Greeks. Actually more Greek than the northern Greeks who have a lot of Slavic and Balkan DNA.

@@randomstuff1315 Cyprus has seen a succession of rulers, namely Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, Romans, Arabs, Crusaders and Turks who ruled the Island as part of the Ottoman Empire, from 1571 until 1878. Cyprus has never been a Greek Island. (Greek Island meaning part of Greece) However, the first settlers were Greek origin and regardless of who came and went Greeks always remained.Hence why the majority of population is Greek/Greek Speaking.Without wishing to offend any Turkish Cypriots a great many of you have Greek dna as many Greeks converted to islam to avoid paying taxes.
