For someone who has been through a lot of hardships she has done an excellent of over coming it all and bringing something positive to those who enjoy dancing. She is a fantastic dancer.
Michaela is now 20 years old and dancing with the prestigious Dutch National Ballet where she is a coryphee (demisoloist). She will be dancing the principal role of (adult) Clara/Sugar Plum Fairy in the company's production of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King on December 28 & December 31, 2015.
I'm not saying her performance was boring, i'm saying the coreography is. Not her fault. Her movements are repeted over and over again. And i don't think dancing is only about showing technique, even if competitions are made for that, so i got bored. Again, i think she's amazing.
Ela é graciosa, talentosa, guerreira e vencedora como poucos no mundo inteiro e com a força que ela tem de superar limites, eu tenho certeza que ela será uma grande bailarina, parabéns Michaela.
Being such an athletic and powerful dancer, Michaela would be PERFECT as the Black Swan Odette in the Swan Lake. Would be first in line to get the tickets when that day comes!! All the best, Michaela!!
Amazing control for 13. Beautiful jump and natural flex. So much talent to work with in this young lady. Many a pro company will be happy to have her when the time is right. Bet on it!
She is prob. the most physicaly gifted dancer i have seen on here!! She has all the tools to be a very good dancer in the near future! I think people are scared of talent when it not packaged in the body or face that they want!!
There IS a difference between constructive criticism and plainly negative comments. Critiquing IS NOT hating and commentators should not confuse the two. The RIGHT comments will come across as such and not be offensive.Critique is never offensive, but hating on someone is. Michaela DePrince will continue to impress and grow. She is a real talent who brings back the fundamental JOY of dance. We'll see a lot more of this beautiful ballerina.
I was looking for a video where there was a black girl performing a contemporary dance routine when I came across. I'm impressed that I found this. She's truly good. I like a well rounded dance routine with a few tricks because I like tricks! lol. Pretty much a good routine with acrobatics at some points. Ballet and Gymnastics are two things I like. I'm a fan of dance. Wish I could learn it.
exactly the most talented people get hate becos more people r jealous. but some other people who r jealous of the talented ones, think of it in a positive way and strive to be like one dancing with such talent and take their time to write something NICE about the dancer.
In the documentary, Michaela stated that people believe black dancers have bad feet, no extension and cannot be graceful. I think this piece was meant to prove those misconceptions wrong. And she won a scholarship to ABT, so haters go sit in the corner
well...it doesnt matter what anyone says, she has been offered a contract with DTH so that's major. she is a beautiful dancer and those who talk can now shut up. all the best to her. love her dancing!
Those who can not, hate. Michaela will forever be a sought after dancer for many major companies in her career. And happily she will have the choice to decide which direction. So all of you who are miserable in your unproductive and sad lives, go and seek help in overcoming your obstacles rather wasting your energy on being critical to the trivial.
great extension, great balance, great technique you kept your hands and arms fluid too - sometimes with all the jumps and leg work young dancers forget hands and arms
Wow. This is the most captivating ballet performance I've seen a ballerina perform...EVER. And, I've seen a lot of ballet performers the past 30+ years. This young lady is increasing ballet performance. Nothing boring here!
Michaela was born in Jan. of 1995. She was 12 when she attended the DTH Summer Intensive in2007, not 13. She had just turned 14 when she performed this at YAGP, but because YAGP uses your age as of Jan. 1, she was classified as a 13-year-old by YAGP. She was among several other dancers who had already turned 14, but were classified as 13.
She's so good. It's funny how most people making rude comments couldn't do 10% of what she did and not nearly as well. Don't forget, ballet is art, you can do as many leg holds as you want want when you have this kind of talent, and unless your Judith Jamison keep your extremely negative stylistic criticism to yourself. Lastly, if she is competing in the Grand Prix, she's a child, not a professional, CALM DOWN people.
the most talented people get the most hate...doesnt make sense. I bet all the people writing negative comments are not even half as talented as Michaela.
I think a lot of people in the comments don't realize at this time Michaela had hurt her Achilles tendon, and was on the verge of possibly never being able to dance again. She has marvelous control, and I respect her so much.
Amazing facility and talent!!!! I am so glad I stumbled upon your videos. You have truly made my night. It is such a pleasure, honor, and relief to see someone so talented. Congratulations! I wish you all the best. :) You're beautiful!!!!!!!!
Well if you read the description, you would see that this is not her BALLET solo, but a CONTEMPORARY solo. And in contemporary, she can do however many leg holds she wants!
i hate when people talk about how some dancers put their leg up a lot... most of them who talk shit are the ones struggling to put their legs up half as high! Keep it up!!!! AND you are only 13 right here! Work girl! and I congratulate you for being able to turn and jump even though you are so gumby! I live for you and look forward to seeing you even better than this in the future! =)
Because she will bring ballet as far as Michael Jordan brought basketball. No less of a comparison would do. These are (2) performers with special set-apaet abilities!
The point of a "Contemporary" piece is to show off ure strenghts and talents. If she's good at extensions and turns that's what the choreographer will give. She just danced it not choreoraphed it. I Love Michaela and she's amazing.
nice dance. I love your extensions, turns and leaps (can't come even a teensy bit near you). but, personally I would've liked to see more levels, like some floor work and stuff. just my opinion.
Would that ballerinas have this stellar technique. She will bring out the very best in ballet! Very graceful AND athletic. Kinda like the female Michael Jordan of ballet
I'm agree with you about her shoulders, arms and fingers, and also I think that she has to work more in bringing out that passion of the dancer, but she is definitely a wonderful ballet dancer and she is young.
You are such a great dancer and this music is beautiful but the choreography is lacking and dull. I feel like you have more to offer and l want to see so much more from you. Very talented!
i cant believe all of you people saying that she "is lousy" or "nobody cares about her extensions" because a) she is fantastic. controlled, flexible, and makes it look damn easy. and b) she didnt choreograph it so shut up! and also, theres a good chance youre just racist. honestly. if she were pale and blonde, you'd think she was great. but look past that, she is amazing. better than a lot of those "pale blonde" dancers out there.
I think she really has talent, is flexible and can support legs at the top without removing the lightness of movement, it makes them look easy. I also understand that the choreography is not classical, but I think if it would decrease the movement of the wrist and hand, movements of the arm would be more clean and beautiful. She is also well controlled by a hand which is positive, but it could release more, play more because though it may be a dancer excels, there isn't a lot of emotion.
@kmaelan112 I absolutely agree, THIS GIRL IS RIDICULOUS!!!! It's rare that you find a gem like her!!! If a white girl did that, a lot of you wouldnt be dishing the comments the you're dishing Michaela. SHE'S A BEAST let's give her her props...that is all
Yeah, @elkerlove1 michaela is fabulous and you cant say shes not. Yes she has good extension! I am sure yours isnt like hers!!!!!!!! AND TO YOU @ROSAILEROX247! THT IS RUDE YOU PROBALY ARE ALL JEALOUS! tHE CONTENT OF CONTEMPORARY AT YAGP IS TO SHOW OFF WAT THE STUDENT CAN DO! SHE MAY HAVE LIFTED HER LEG ALOT BUT THE JUDGES LIKED IT! THATS IS WHY MICHAELA WON YAGP! AND THE CHOREOGRAPHY IS STYLE AND EVERYONE HAS A DIFFERENT STYLE!!!!!!!! MICHAELA DONT LISTEN TO THESE PEOPLE! CONTINUE TO ROCK!!!!!!!
@theAnnafilms hey im from rock... im not good @ turns or leg holds BUT i like my school so stop hating on the contemporary pieces i bet you couldnt do as well as she could at HER age
@jammastacode im not hating, shes amazing! its just that the choreography want great, not that she wasnt great!!!! im only 12 i was just sayin.....but i think shes a beautiful dancer
I don't think anyone is actually hating on her, I think we all agree she is graceful and very talented but this choreography is just plain strange. Her talent made this kind of choreography brilliant though!
For someone who has been through a lot of hardships she has done an excellent of over coming it all and bringing something positive to those who enjoy dancing. She is a fantastic dancer.
She's flawless in all her movement! So inspiring! And her leaps are beautiful
The role she always wanted!
Promoted to soloist now!
I'm not saying her performance was boring, i'm saying the coreography is. Not her fault. Her movements are repeted over and over again. And i don't think dancing is only about showing technique, even if competitions are made for that, so i got bored. Again, i think she's amazing.
Next stop Dance Theatre of Harlem.
BRAVO!
You go, little sistah...
She looks beautiful. I'm sure she'll go far. Michaela, if you read this please ignore the haters. Some people just refuse to acknowledge greatness.
Ela é graciosa, talentosa, guerreira e vencedora como poucos no mundo inteiro e com a força que ela tem de superar limites, eu tenho certeza que ela será uma grande bailarina, parabéns Michaela.
How she managed to perform this with an injured foot and make it look good is beyond me
Lawrie M actually this was a year before she danced with her injured foot
Being such an athletic and powerful dancer, Michaela would be PERFECT as the Black Swan Odette in the Swan Lake. Would be first in line to get the tickets when that day comes!!
All the best, Michaela!!
Amazing control for 13. Beautiful jump and natural flex. So much talent to work with in this young lady. Many a pro company will be happy to have her when the time is right. Bet on it!
Ooo She has all the facility in the world! I cant wait till she matures into her own body and artistic vision! She has soo much potential. yesss
She is prob. the most physicaly gifted dancer i have seen on here!! She has all the tools to be a very good dancer in the near future! I think people are scared of talent when it not packaged in the body or face that they want!!
I don't know about you guys, but if my extension was that amazing and up that high, I would never stop doing them.
She still has that distinctive style. Very beautiful and unique.
i just say what i believe, little sistah!
keep your head high, stay focused, and it will all work out for your good.
be blessed
1
Not a huge fan of the choreography but she's amazing. Her extensions and jumps are flawless
I was looking for a video where there was a black girl performing a contemporary dance routine when I came across. I'm impressed that I found this. She's truly good. Michaela Deprince is truly one of my favorite dancers in the world. Her leg holds are so beautiful
she has AMAZING potential the grace wil prolly come in time
then ABT it will be...you can go ANYWHERE you want to go with your gift. remember to never, ever settle.
be blessed!
This is dance at its BEST!
In the documentary, Michaela stated that people believe black dancers have bad feet, no extension and cannot be graceful. I think this piece was meant to prove those misconceptions wrong. And she won a scholarship to ABT, so haters go sit in the corner
She is such a beautiful dancer!! Her balance and lines are just perfect!! Watching her helps me push myself to become a better ballet dancer.
well...it doesnt matter what anyone says, she has been offered a contract with DTH so that's major. she is a beautiful dancer and those who talk can now shut up. all the best to her. love her dancing!
she's so good and she have a very good technique

So all of you who are miserable in your unproductive and sad lives, go and seek help in overcoming your obstacles rather wasting your energy on being critical to the trivial.
She was just featured in Teen Vogue's June/July magazine and shes also featured in the documentary FIrst Position.
I think even with or without her injury she did amazing.
great extension, great balance, great technique
you kept your hands and arms fluid too - sometimes with all the jumps and leg work young dancers forget hands and arms

I absolutely love this!
I don´t like the coreography, but michaela has prooved to be one of the bests. I LOVE HER.

la chica es muy buena bailarina, con muchísimo talento!!!! Arriba mi raza!!!!

the most talented people get the most hate...doesnt make sense. I bet all the people writing negative comments are not even half as talented as Michaela.

Breath of fresh air!
I think a lot of people in the comments don't realize at this time Michaela had hurt her Achilles tendon, and was on the verge of possibly never being able to dance again. She has marvelous control, and I respect her so much.

so awesome
you go girl
Wow, so talented! Her dancing is so mature for a 13 year old, she's better than me and I'm 18.
Amazing...!
her leaps are so incredible
Maybe you should know that she danced with tendinitis in one of her foot and a really severe pain. I think she's really amazing !! Love her
i hate when people talk about how some dancers put their leg up a lot... most of them who talk shit are the ones struggling to put their legs up half as high! Keep it up!!!! AND you are only 13 right here! Work girl! and I congratulate you for being able to turn and jump even though you are so gumby! I live for you and look forward to seeing you even better than this in the future! =)
***** Are you a ballett dancer? Do you know how hard it is to do something like that? And the choreography isn't her fault! I think she is amazing.
her flexibility is almost scary. She's awesome! =D
Because she will bring ballet as far as Michael Jordan brought basketball. No less of a comparison would do. These are (2) performers with special set-apaet abilities!

She just danced it not choreoraphed it.
I Love Michaela and she's amazing.
OMG!!!!!! did u win? ur AMAZIN!
Well said!
i so agree with you...
beautiful extensions
@blueberryskirts THANK YOU
I seen her at ABT a couple days ago & its even more breathtaking in person :) Very talented indeed. & only 14?!
if i meet her in my life i would say thank you for ispireing me to start ballet
It's a competition, she's showcasing herself as a dancer and one of her strengths is flexibility. So, therefore, your argument is irrelevant.
She recently turned 14. She's in the junior division
@Dancer4640 And at age thirteen, when she danced this she knew that, but she didn't choreograph it. Her teacher did. She was just told to dance it.
Your flexability is killing me!!!!!!!!!!!
Complexions here you come :)

She was 13 here. She's 17-18 now. She's world class apparently.

She's only 13 here, but she's nearly 16 or 17 and signed with ABT now.
@elkerlove1 THANK YOU!!!

I love how the dance really showcases her long legs:) wonderful job!

@kmaelan112 I absolutely agree, THIS GIRL IS RIDICULOUS!!!! It's rare that you find a gem like her!!! If a white girl did that, a lot of you wouldnt be dishing the comments the you're dishing Michaela. SHE'S A BEAST let's give her her props...that is all
Because she will bring ballet as far as Michael Jordan brought basketballl. No less of a comparison would for these (2) set-apart performers!
It's amazing, but that's not the version which was shown in First Position
@theAnnafilms hey im from rock... im not good @ turns or leg holds BUT i like my school so stop hating on the contemporary pieces i bet you couldnt do as well as she could at HER age
it works for RG .. grate skills but where is the dancing?
She will become the female "Michael Jordan" of ballet. Just keep watching the Divine design.
ya think?
@jammastacode im not hating, shes amazing! its just that the choreography want great, not that she wasnt great!!!! im only 12 i was just sayin.....but i think shes a beautiful dancer
well apparently somebody did because she dances with Dance Theatre of Harlem now.
She is 18 now
does anybody know what this song is called?
that's OK they will find some funds for her!
I don't think anyone is actually hating on her, I think we all agree she is graceful and very talented but this choreography is just plain strange. Her talent made this kind of choreography brilliant though!
