"Adults who exhibit genuine joy are often dismissed as childish, or too feminine, or unserious, or self-indulgent." THANK you! It's even worse when you are a guy! I've spent my whole life having to restrain myself, I don't even know if I can ever be myself again at this point. The reason why joy is repressed is because joyful people can't be easily controlled and used.
Seriously that statement really stood out to me too. I feel stupid expressing my joy sometimes in little things living in a place like NYC where people are so stern
I've always been sure that my bicycle is one of my sources of joy: big round wheel, bright colors (sky blue and orange). And let alone the feeling when you hop on it and start pedaling, when you feel the smoothness (with the occasional bumps of course) of the road underneath you and your beautiful machine; the lightness of the wind caressing you. That's when I feel joy, the joy of being alive
Losshe Imagine being into flatland freestyle in the 1980’s, when the bikes had vivid, bright colors... search “1980’s purple Skyway”. Loved those times!
I am happy to read that you find motivation here. Your comment about depression and missing joy resonated deeply with me. Several years ago, I was led to the decision to nurture the seed of joy in me. This became my priority. I struggled to do even this, but knowing that I needed to nurture joy in me for the health of my children gave me the shove to take action. Meditation on the 16 breaths of the Full Awareness of Breathing, has been a transformative tool for me. I am so grateful for this gift. (I am also grateful for having depression, because it has deepened my understanding and grown my compassion.) This evening I hold you in prayer for finding/feeling the Divine joy within you!❤
This is hands down one of my favorite TED talks! The subject/understanding of JOY is so incredibly imperative for us all to ponder. I love how she connected the dots to the areas lacking astetics of joy and those created with the 8ntent of being joyous!! 💜💜💜
Joy is, or rather can be, a perpetual feeling. Happiness, depends on the circumstances. Joy is a very spiritual phenomenon. A God-breathed sense of faith and peace. God desires that we celebrate life and cultivate joy, whether or not our circumstances make us happy.....
those big companies like Google have worked out what she explained :) when you look inside those companies, many rooms are painted in a few bright colours and they offer rooms of joy like gaming rooms, reading rooms, relaxation rooms etc. No wonder people like to work there.
Ingrid Fetell Lee... Your presentation put a smile on my face, on numerous occasion!!! Felt to me like JOY ;-) I also really loved the fact all your fingernails are different colours!!! :-)
I LOVE this. Thankyou SO much. You have given something tangible to what I've felt all along. I hope the world can see this and work towards these principles in everything that is built and designed. Thank you
Fantastic topic...OMG joy is not easy to be found, sort of like love...the more you search it the more it hides away...and like love when you stop searching here it comes!
Thank you so much for this talk Ingrid! I love how you are nearly in tears at the end of the talk.. it was such a genuine reaction from the applause you got! Much love
I just love how the images already make me (and everybody else!??) joyful!! The schools are a great example of how much changes, once you change the paint. Imagine, this is only about the colour and it makes so much difference. If we can't change our cities and offices (yet), how about we start with brightening up our personal lives! Thank you for the inspiration :-)
Always loved TED. Joy? Fleeting. But joy does need to be an integral part of everyone’s unique ‘difficult paths’ in this life. For me currently, there’s so little happiness. Tough personal times. Grateful for her talk. Peace n’ luv to everyone.
I look for joy in the small things in every day, and in my friends and family. Vlogging happy days has also given me a lot of joy because then I can re-live it x
Bright colors, Curves, Symmetry, Patterns- all of the things that Designers learn to create. And this is just Visual. Harmonious sounds and music also bring joy. That's auditory And so does delicious food. And so does fragrance of Lavender. And so does touching certain surfaces. In short, joy can be found in all our experiences only if we experience things fully. Slow down. Let the experience sink in. When you rush to switch experiences, you miss the joy that the experience brings. Those who design experiences may want to consider how to design to produce harmony.
Great talk! I could have said it better. Joy is so important. Colors, shapes, it just brightens your day. That's why I painted my house in bright colors. People might call me crazy or weird, but it makes me happy :-)
In engineering we briefly go over the joyful effects of timber design and construction. To a lesser extent, timber is an inherently more comforting and joyful aesthetic than say concrete or steel. We just need to take it one step further and spread awareness, create a trend. Make it the norm to make workplaces more aesthetic like the ones in her presentation. The 9 to 5 life may not be so monotonous and dreary if that were to occur.
When I found my first book on timberframing, I had to read the whole thing, right then. The big room with open frame work, just beautiful. Think about old boats (Chris Craft) and old campers, lots of wood there, and a warmth.
Standing over a sink full of dishes, my kids playing play dough at the table. I. AM. SOBBING. I have been seriously creating art since I was 16. It's wildly misunderstood. People chop my art to horrible. But this helps me understand what I've been chasing for 20 years. 😭 I always question my talents and abilities. But this helps to know I'm on the right path. Thank you Thank you thank you @Richelleoncanvas ❤
Richelle, I gave art up in HS because I could not get an A and we ALL had to get A's to get into College, right ? - You might want to check out FIlm Courage, Brad Rushing, he talks about just do the work. Maybe you can spend time with your kids and reconnect to your love of art and share that with your little ones.
Without really knowing, I have now realized I have created or evoke joy in others and myself by sharing the things that I enjoy and love. My colorful gaming room and my love of rgb lights. Thank you I now understand the small little impact being in the moment or color means. :)
Things are built into rectangles because it's an efficient shape for building in a real world, with real materials. It takes creativity and hard work to entrench the same world with curves, or natural shapes. But it's nice when done well.
I work in designing schools and we often get the comment that "color is too distracting for our kids !" And it always makes me so sad. I understand the need for kids with sensory issues to have calming environments, so the issue runs deeper than just personal taste, but I can't help but feel that some of the joy in spaces are sucked out when we neglect color.
If you are seeking, seek us with joy For we live in the kingdom of joy. Do not give your heart to anything else But to the love of those who are clear joy... 💚 RUMI
The Arts & Crafts Movement said something along the lines of: 'the joy experienced through the hand of the maker is passed on to the user' - We have found this to be true, as well as the best use of our hands (with our head and heart)
it's really true. I mostly believe it that joy is hidden where you don't find it. I find my joy every where though I am in danger.because I believe that my joy may be steady if I can enjoy it.I may suggest that your joy is you
the items themselves have values of joy assigned to them not because of the colors or shapes themselves, but rather what the color combinations and shapes mean. the vibrant colors and excitingly flavorful images remind us of moments when life is sweeter than the state at which we see the surroundings normally. in other words, the images simply trigger subconsious memories of the past, when everything was simpler... to give an example to support my arguement, these bright colors don't really trigger the same type of joy as do the more angular shapes and concrete colors. or, the greens and browns found in nature. maybe it is because these were the colors of my childhood, and the assosiation of colors that create a feeling of joy are associated with the enviornments that have felt most comfortable in the past.
I don’t think it’s color as much as things that remind us of our childhood. For instance a treehouse lacks color but can bring great Joy! Also a good design with neutral colors can create a feeling of abundance. Just my perspective
One thing you didn't mention was that all your examples of joyful environments were also uncluttered with lots of clear space, often white, between the colorful shapes. Clutter has the opposite effect of your joyful objects.
What a wonderful speech! You are spot on about the importance of celebrating joy on a daily basis. Well researched and presented! Laughter Yoga will help get you there. Alexa Drubay
this makes sense. I know that in Feng Shui they advise you to have roundness in your furniture and environment. The points made by 2 walls coming together and jutting out into a room are called poison arrows. Angles pointing at us feel threatening. Also why do I feel comforted when I see older architectural designs for homes and buildings, but not so much by modern architecture, even the ones she showed. Maybe comfort is a different esthetic than joy?
Well, I think that's just more of a matter of taste! Of course not everybody will visually enjoy those type of buildings or even like bright colors, but that's not the big point anyway, as preference is different from things that stimulate joy.
Your talk was wonderful and important. A few lucky people become mature adults but retain much of their "child." Such people, my wife is one, experience and express joy throughout each day. I wrote the following poem about my wife: Magnolia Blessing What angel rested there upon the height? From heaven’s touch is born a wondrous form. How sharply does such beauty focus sight, Of Eden’s realm does it the earth inform. It seems my helpmate often visits there, That she uncovers joy this world conceals, And finding it invites mankind to share, To countless souls her happiness reveals. The clear intent, that flowers grace this sphere, Does not remove their hold upon the heart. In their embrace the moments shared endear, The fears that cloud our earthly days depart. No esoteric gift the gods bestow, Their flowers shine for all who yearn below.
What a reflection on joy!!!! Absolutely amazed by your analytical skills!!!! The topic itself attracted me to watch the video(i usually do not watch the ones which are in my recommendations!) Beautifully explained...nd very engrossing♥️♥️♥️
What about cozy things? Sure, you can't include them into architecture, but I am pretty certain that they are a considerable part of joy. Just a thought...

This is my favourite TED Talk along talks about Neuroscience.
This should have more views. But perhaps because joy is the topic, people might think it is not serious. That is sad for them.
