There was once an overflow channel from the canal under the "bridge more like a wall". Notice that the stones of the wall have rounded tops - they are identical to those that are above the overflow channel that's near Whiteley Arches, just west of Hebden Bridge, and there's a stream feeding the canal opposite, and the overflow is there so that during heavy rainfall, excess water from the stream could flow straight across and out again.

Definitely a structure with purpose. Cheers. Now I also have to get out to Whiteley Arches. I'm not familiar with Hebden Bridge but I'm guessing it's a well known spot.
I wonder if the overflow channel will ever be unblocked? Surely that'd have potential to prevent flooding

@idiotanddog The overflow I mentioned is about half a mile towards Todmorden from the Stubbing Wharf pub.
The wall is identical to the one in your video, except it has a walkway made of thick wooden planks running alongside it, and the water from the canal flows under the wall, which is raised about a foot from the ground on plinths.
