Not Andrew here, I grew up in this area and really knew it well ! (used to live near the railway and the canal ! ) Great to see it all again and before this blessed L/D. I loved the place -still do really and see some of the buildings that were ruins in my day but are now "fantastic" housing estates, so much has altered since my day , love that the canal is being used again , in my time it was a bit of a dumping area but didn't stop us playing there ! just love all that you have shown as I spent time at home in Littleborough and time in Salford and Manchester, so recognise both what you have shown here but also a lot of what Martin Zero has on here too .I lived not far from Hollingworth Lake too. Brilliant video !!!

You have got the best to come ! I have walked the whole stretch from Littleborough all the way to Sowery Bridge and I can tell you , IT'S WONDERFUL ! Lock after lock after lock and some great views ! Plenty of old buildings as well and some lovely little towns like Todmorden and Hebden bridge ! Thank you guys and nice to see Martin stretching his legs ! LOL !

I’ve run the length of this all the way to Walsden when I’m training for a race 😊 it’s quite a challenge but worth the scenery

The part you stopped at at 10 mins in, was infact supposed to be a nature reserve. Yet when akzo nobel was demolished (it was just behind you) there were a lot of contaminants found. I live in smithybridge and walk to Littleborough along here most days. Also the history of clegg hall is really fascinating from a local standpoint with the obligatory ghost stories and legends of a hidden tunnel etc. Beautiful stretch of canal. And it gets better the further towards Hebden you go.

Nice video and nice to see Martin with you. On the stretch from Littleborough there was a chippy at Walsden which was legendary unfortunately I think the guy has retired possibly in 2019, not sure if it is still going.

You passed the house I was brought up in just before Ben Healey Bridge. Wonderful memories. English Gentleman is right about the ABC Steps though there are not 26 as is often claimed. You're looking at the flood plain of the river Roch there.

The Oldham Loop Railway Line closed in October 2009, then reopened as a Metrolink extension in April 2014. Not much trace of it now, but Akzo Chemie used to have a large chemical works near to the canal bank on the western side of Littleborough, and that section of canal was not somewhere you would have wanted to fall into back in the old days! :-) Pity you didn't have a chance to look at Hollingworth Lake, the 'Weavers Seaport', just a short way up the hill from Smithy Bridge, and built in 1800 to top up the canal - it could be another nice walk for you on another day.

2 Mill workers died in that fire. RIP

Oh and the steps under the train line are known as the abc steps. They lead you onto farmland (it always floods due to the river) which then leads you into Littleborough via the red row estate.

A cracking vid, I love the countryside in that part of the UK it always looks so rugged. I hope Martin got fed quickly after you'd finished filming, or else he might have taken a bite out of you and Joanne!!!!

It ended up being the only chippy in town 😂 the plan is to go back in January, the next part is apparently the nicest by far 😀

@@TrekkingExploration Well I hope you all had mushy peas as well, can't beat it!!! The sheer thought of haddock, chips and two cartons of mushy peas by the canal is absolute bliss.

The Rochdale coat of Arms shows sheep and wool sacks. Rochdale was a woollen town before ever it was a cotton town. As far as the Rochdale Canal, or Cut as it was known, the boats would have carried wool into Rochdale from Yorkshire where the canal ends in the East. Only later would cotton bales replace that cargo and bring cotton into Rochdale from the docks, Liverpool and Manchester. At it’s height Rochdale produced three billion pieces of cotton a year. That is billion and not million.

So, the overflow is taken out of the canal...and sent back in?
