I'm so excited you're starting into isopods! They're just so damn cute! I'm glad Rainbow Mealworms was so quick to correct the issues, but honestly it's really disconcerting that everything was packaged so badly. You were missing a species and you had two different containers that we empty (well, minus the one little Zebra friend who didn't get out...) AND most of the silkworms were dead. That's all just not great. I hope when they re-send the missing insects you'll have a better experience and maybe they'll package things better - they really shouldn't have animals being able to escape during shipping...

You are right. I’m really confused why the lids weren’t at least taped shut. It was definitely a bit of a mess and not what I would expect from them. Hopefully it was just a fluke thing, maybe someone new packaging or something. I don’t know. Thank you though!

Yesss, I love my isopods! I have lil dairy cows and I can't wait to expand my collection.
You can add springtails to the enclosure to take care of mold/excess food! Tbh you don't need the hydro balls at all, most people I see keep them don't have that drainage layer because isopods burrow all over. Def add cork bark! You can even get flake soil to mix into the substrate to provide some extra food and structure to the soil. Add some cuttlebone, they need calcium. Dairy cows also need slightly more protein when the colony gets larger or they'll cannibalize each other.

  • @lizrasper1213

Hey Kat! I keep several types of isopods and they are awesome! Congrats on the new critters! I am SOOO excited that you are getting into isopods because its something I've been interested in even before spiders. :D Just a few tips, isopods like to hide, so add in a couple cork bark flats into their enclosures so they can travel from one side to the other and stay hidden, and keep one end of the enclosure dry and one damp. They will travel between the two sides when they want more moisture and when they want to be more dry, but they need both. Their primary diet consists of dry leaves and decaying wood, but they will also eat small pieces of veggies, dehydrated insects and fish, as well as "isopod chow". One thing to look out for especially when first starting out is MOLD. When I set up my first enclosure I got it really humid, didn't have enough cross ventilation and put too much food in their enclosure and mold exploded...so just something to be aware of when you're first starting out. Now that I have more ventilation and know how much they will eat, I don't put in too much food and mold is not an issue anymore! :) There are also a lot of awesome Isopod groups on Facebook and highly recommend you join some, everyone is super helpful and can answer any questions!

    • @deedeejones57
      @deedeejones57 3 роки тому

can you explain to me about them? I think they are cute but I dont know much about them or what they do. I know with the springtails they are cleaners and you can put them in the T enclosure. I just dont understand the iso's yet.

    • @lizrasper1213
      @lizrasper1213 3 роки тому

@@deedeejones57 Isopods are pillbugs or rolly-pollys as some people call them. They are the clean-up crew in a bioactive enclosure and yes, they work alongside springtails to eat up the feces and decaying organic matter like wood and leaves. They are VERY beneficial to have in a vivarium. A lot of reptile keepers keep cultures of isopods so that they have a continuous supply of isopods for their enclosures. Sometimes an enclosure my dry out or your reptile might have them as a little snack and its always nice to have more on hand. But there are so many different types of isopods that they have kind of turned into their own hobby! I went from having one culture of isopods to having 9 in two years haha. They are so cute and easy to keep that people easily fall in love with them and want to add more types to their "collection". There are also different types of isopods that can handle different types of environments as well, some like very damp and humid environments, there are others that like it more dry, so that is another reason to keep different types of isopods. I have isopods I put in with my crested geckos and different isopods for in with my leopard gecko. Bottom line, is its fun and easy to collect different types of isopods and watch them grow and multiply and thats why they've become so popular even on their own as a pet. But be warned because there are some FANCY isopods out there, you can drop $100+ on 10 isopods and have them all die if you don't know what you are doing.

Inspired by T. Kat. She Loves You
She loves me yeah, yeah yeah.
I think she only loves me. I saw her yesterday.
I got her from a T breeder. And here's what I have to say
She loves me yeah, yeah, yeah.
When I took her home, she had a twinkle in her eye!
And when I put her in her enclosure
She gave me a high five!
Because she loves me. And you know that can't be bad.
Because she loves me, and you know I can't be sad!
She loves you yeah, yeah, yeah!
She hangs out in her burrow and only emerges to feed.
Just like I hang out in the basement and hit the fridge
    We have similar needs!!
She loves me yeah, yeah, yeah. She loves me yeah, yeah, yeah!!
Now me and T got married.
It was a small simple affair.
    Instead of throwing rice
    T's friends threw urticulating hairs!!
She loves me YEA YEAH YEAH YEAH!!

it has been a couple decades, but i remember turning over big rocks and other things that had sat in place for a while to find isopods. at the time i called them "roly polys", but i think i remember seeing 2 types. both types were grey with a slight hint of blue, the difference was one type had more of a rounded carapace and could easily roll up into a complete ball and the other type was slightly more flat and their carapace flared out along the sides a bit so they couldn't roll up as completely. i remember catching a bunch of them for an elementary school project, and they really seemed to love the apple core that i put in the container with them.
they seemed to like any area that is dark and slightly damp. this is all from personal experience in northern Colorado. Kat might consider just turning over a few decent sized rocks or bits of wood (in my experience anything that covers more than a couple of square inches of dirt has good odds of hiding some form of critter) outside her home to see if any of those isopods or other critters are something she would be interested in keeping.

Pill bugs and sow bugs are of the wood louse family I believe. They have very weak mouths. They love soft rotting things. They also eat soft newly sprouting plants. They prefer rotting leaves and wood, but they also love dog and cat food and poo. They can be a pest to people growing tender young plants and shoots. But when well fed they will usually leave everything else alone. I had a lot of them in my backyard at by old house. They would get colorful marks on them when breeding season comes around. But they are also quite slow and clumsy. They would often fall into our pool. Oddly they can survive in a pool longer than any other bug I have ever seen underwater. But even they eventually wind up dying if not removed from the water. They love to hide in rotting wood and other cool shady places that have places to hide. The babies stay attached to mom for a little while until they are old enough to look after themselves.

“They look so good and juicy” 😂 as if they were gummyworms and not actual caterpillars lol.

Actually they do look good because they’re the same color as the best flavor in Scooby doo fruit snacks. I just had a flashback to childhood . lol

Have you considered getting a Segestria florentina? They are adorable burrowing spiders. Also when will be the next time you feature your Aphonopelma seemanni? It's beautiful.

Hmmm...I used to order from Rainbow Mealworms- I used to order 100 giant mealworms at a time for my bearded dragons... I never had any issues, but I only ordered one “pack” at a time!!

So decided I'm not getting my first tarantula because someone said about them kicking hairs and it could potentially be harmful if they got in my dogs eyes or breathed in. It will be painful for them and they could get an eye infection as well. Not all kick hairs right? Any suggestions what to get? I love the jumping spiders but wanted something SLOW moving. Now I'm bummed. I just recently got over my spider phobea and decided on getting a trantula (bold move). This is all because of Trantula Kat!! 😘🤘

I'm surprised they didn't use tape for the packaging probably would've prevented from spilling

Hey Kat! Question on the packaging, when you've ordered feeders from them in the past do they always have the "Live Animals" sticker on the box? I'm looking for somewhere to order bottle fly spikes like the ones you got but I need someone that ships in a more...discreet packaging so as not to run into issues with neighbors. Having a box labeled CAUTION: LIVE INSECTS land on someone's doorstep doesn't always go over well in apartments 🤣
