  • Is it too tall? I rode the Ducati Desert X on the beautiful streets of Gran Canaria (book your trip here: www.canaryride.com/#juliane ) and in this video I tell you my honest thoughts on this big travel enduro.
    Thanks for watching, subscribing and leaving a comment.
    Cheers,
    Juliane

    Amazing review. And yes, it looks very high indeed. I'm 1,73 and it is scary only looking at it. Watching you riding it, give me some confidence to try. Tks.

    Hi Juliane, really enjoyed your insightful review, spot on- good fun and interesting. I've just bought one in the UK from Ducati Manchester, running it in stil, but so impressed. I'm only 5'9 and find it quite tall but still manageable, as easy to flat foot one of either feet at junction etc. I am impressed how exciting
    Desert engine is considering I have bigger Ducatis more powerful models like Multistrada Enduro 1260 and Streetfighter V4, and a big loud daily commuter - BMW flat twin - Scrambler, but DesertX is just as much fun and has great performance. Love its looks and handles so beautifully and safely around mucky country lanes- attracts a lot of attention retro-looks wise, here in rural Lancashire!😅 Nick

    Great review of this cool '80s style traillie! To me, it's the successor to KTM's 950S/990R which were great bikes and very capable. I owned both, 3x GSA and many enduro/MX and to me the GSA still has the best balance between road and off. Ultimately, these are off-road tourers (if you were just going off-road, you'd use a lighter bike). 220mm suspension/21" wheels are great at speed off road, but adventure riding is more about the long game and keeping yourself and the bike in one piece! I imagine fun for a day blast on S Europe/Scandi dirt roads though. But northern Europe? GSA any day! The GS is now such a complete bike... But remote wilderness? Yamaha T7!

    I had a second-gen Aprilia Caponord. Very similar to this bike. Rode it all over the United States, super fun and as comfortable as a bike can get. The Ducati looks great.

      How did it do on fuel? I had an Aprilia Falco which has the same engine. If I have heavy with the throttle I'd get as low as mid 20s MPG. Normally around high 30s low 40s. One of the reasons I like the 890 Adventure is the excellent fuel economy.

    Great review. Appreciated you honestly describing the bike. Where it excels and where it falls short. For me, the biggest issues, besides the price, are the direction Ducati is taking with not describing how to perform basic service on the bike, but rather telling the owner to take it in for service for every little thing. Oil change, air filter service, etc. To me, a great adventure bike is one that allows you to be less, not more, reliant on civilization. Another issue not described is the difficulty removing the rear wheel and axle. Not a great design. Adventure is about the unforseen, the unplanned. Requiring you to be within a drive from a Ducati dealer is not adventure, at least for me.

    Good review, quite thorough. Definitely with your opinion on the looks, yes very nice. You are right, manufacturers should offer these bikes in a lower format, I imagine they might be missing out on a few sales. Keep up the great work you’re doing awesome👏

    • @pavelm8736
      @pavelm8736 Рік тому

      But making it lower would mean to compromise ground clearence and suspension travel... Offroad abilities are the key difference over the Multistrada.

    • @petercreagh8797
      @petercreagh8797 Рік тому

      I think a lot of brands of adventure bikes would be missing out on sales due to how tall their seats are.

      @@pavelm8736 How many people who spend that much money on a bike though can afford to boulder hop with them?

    • @pavelm8736
      @pavelm8736 Рік тому

      @@petercreagh8797 I don't know... I guess a lot. If they have money for the monkey, they presumably have money for the bananas.
      For me the price tag of the bike is not the decision point to take bike off road. Maintenance cost for such use and cost of potential crash is.
      Plus 875 mm seat height is Ok for me (I am usually happy between 865 mm and 895 mm) :-) Anything lower than 860 mm and I get ache in my knees after hour or so of riding...

    Maybe a DesertX with a 697 Ducati engine would be financially (and physically!) within reach of more riders ? It’ll definitely put the cat amongst the pidgeons in the mid-class adventure sector.

    Hello Juliane, I wondered when you intended to do a review on this bike.

    • @MichaelTucker
      @MichaelTucker Рік тому

      I have been watching the reports carefully with consideration to buy one. I am a little taller than you and I know owners who are around the same height.
      In Australia, we have plenty of opportunity to get off-road, so this model is really interesting.
      A while ago I bought a Honda CRF450L which was supposed to the greatest bike going, but it turned out to be the biggest, most expensive lemon. I am happy to sit back before buying another bike to work out what the faults are first.
      The rally kit has been installed on this bike, plus there is an 8l sub-tank for fuel.
      There is a cheap cat-delete that brings out the old Ducati sound. There also is the Termigoni sport pipes that also come with another riding mode.(for off-road use only)
      Someone has come up with a decent radiator guard to deal with mud build-up (causes overheating).
      There has been an issue with a blown fuse caused by water and mud getting in under the seat.
      Also I have seen shots of the drive belts getting dirt build-up in the cases. The wheels are the same as fitted to the Triumph Tiger and the spokes need regular maintenance.
      Service intervals are good at 1000, 15,000 & 30,000kms respectively.
      While the DDX is fitted with KYB suspension, these are the downgrade versions of what the bike could have come equipped with. Very similar to a stock WP setup.
      As for your seat height issue, any decent suspension tuner can customise this to suit..
      This bike isn't just a Sunday cafe racer, it has loads of potential to get down and dirty as a long distance tourer.

    Lovely bike but I am in the same boat, not tall enough to be confortable on such a bike for the amount of time I have to have my foot on the ground. Shame as I have that irrational fancy for a bike that can go off road. Luckily and largely thanks to Ducati, there's a range of scramblers to scratch that off-road itch with bikes good for the town and B roads.
