Whenever Mapo plays a game that didn’t click with me, there’s a good chance I’ll end up giving it another try and really liking it. His appreciation of these games and attention to detail helps bridge that gap.
Definitely the case for this, i’ve paused a bunch of his playthroughs to get through them myself because he draws me into them. Couldn’t recommend these more.
mapo is the reason I finally finished mgs5 2years ago or so. now he'll make me play this, after I bounced off of it a couple of times. so yeah, I know this phenomenon, too.
Love your letsplays! Hint for latin pronounciarions: romans didn’t have the letter U and instead used V, so when you see an awkwardly placed V, it is pronounced as U (as in excomunicationis)
4:24: A Prie Dieu is essentially a small alter/ prayer desk for someone to pray to God at; the name is French and literally translates to, "Pray [to] God." The main themes, imagery, and so on in this game is inspired by Roman Catholicism, its iconography, Holy Week in Spain and Spanish culture in general, especially that of Andalucía. I, contributing my two bits, feel that the art style of the game is influenced by two master Romantic-Era artists of Spain: El Greco, because of the religious nature of many of his paintings, which were of saints and gospel scenes, and Francisco Goya, particularly near the end of the latter's life when he painted his last or second to last set of paintings, the infamous "Black Paintings (best known for the graphic, 'Saturn Devouring His Son' which was painted on one of the walls of his kitchen/ dining area)." As the man himself stated, 'The sleep of Reason produces Monsters.' And there is no Reason in the Land of Cvstodia; there is only Faith. Also, the name of the blade is Mea Culpa, which is Latin for "My Sin." It is named such because the woman you saw creating it/ being impaled through the heart by it in the throes of depression and religious anxiety felt that it was all her fault... you'll find out _what_ she feels responsible for later on in the game.
YOOOOO I have been WAITING for this one to show up, but not in like an impatient way! I remember being stricken by the art style of this one back a few years ago, and I couldn't help myself. I've beaten the base game but not any of the DLC content or the sequel. So glad to see you taking this one on. While it's not the hardest, it has some of the coolest world-building, atmosphere, and immersion from one of these games. Honestly, it got me interested in Metroidvania games. I hope you enjoy it just like I did! To be clear, there is a good amount of hidden areas and NPC quests like the Souls games, so be on the lookout for stuff in the environment.
Oh brother, you are in for a treat. I have just recently finished this one on my channel; it's absolutely amazing. Can't wait to see you get deeper into it!
When I was recommended this game, whoever did so suggested I play it with the voice acting in Spanish, subtitles are still in English but it adds a lot of flavour imo. Probably not ideal for a lets play intended for other people though of course
@@SkeleTonHammerProbably because the script was written with the Spanish performances in mind. The original release actually had some not so great English performances, to the point some characters were recast (Crisanta being the most noticeable). I think the English voice acting in the first one is fine, but the Spanish voice acting blows it out if the water. I do think the English voice acting is a pretty big improvement in the second game, but I still have a preference for the Spanish performances.
@@SkeleTonHammer In addition to what the other guy said, the developers made it clear that English voice acting was chosen because that was the language their audience was most likely gonna speak, but they really wanted to add Spanish voice acting because it's their native language and the entire game is based around Spanish Catholicism. Personally, I tend to pick games based on the language of the region the game takes place in, like SMT in Japanese, Stalker in Russian, so Spanish was a no-brainer for me.
@@Sergeikins I think Mapo tries to pick based on what the original recording is, if that's known and/or obvious. Which imo is generally the best way to do it, because usually that's the recording that received the highest proportion of the voice over budget and by extension is usually the highest quality. Not always, but typically.
Two Blasphemous games PLUS DLC expansions (Blasphemous 2: Mea Culpa is coming out on Halloween, and we all know Silksong won't be out by then). It feels like Silksong is the most ridiculous troll ever at this point. I won't believe it's really real until I'm playing it, and I might still question it even then!
Yeah definitely. I think the reason those developers went with "paper doll" animation in that game though was just so that they could layer all of the different clothing, armor and weapons on top of the character models more easily. When you animate games with sprite based pixel art like Blasphemous does, you basically have to create a new character sprite variation for every possible cosmetic combination. With paper doll models and 3D, these things can be layered onto existing models more easily. It's the same reason why even something like Symphony of the Night, which was basically a "AAA" game by 1997 standards, didn't have much visual customization either. Some parts of Alucard change color with certain items, and the weapons have a few different animations and models, but otherwise his base character model remains the same no matter what you equip.
The Last Faith is a like a bloodborne version of blasphemous with a lot more customization and weapon types similar to dark souls if the variety is what you like about S&S
Chris do you remember 5 years ago when this came out? i came to you in a Dream and said in the future when you become Mapocolops on UA-cam could you please play Blasphemous and now here we are Thanks my dude 🙂
45:40 the game has an artbook with iterations of designs for enemies, characters, locations and enviroments and it's totally worth geting after you finishing the game. The art of this game is beautifully grotesque.
Blasphemous is such a great game especially in terms of the very amazing art. Like obviously the gameplay, exploration & music is great but I think art design/direction is top-notch and might be the best part of the game to me because the dark and disturbing imagery is really impactful. I love how while you can see the many influences on this game like Dark Souls, Metroid & Castlevania it clearly is doing its own thing with the creators/artists taking influence/symbolism of Catholicism I believe & going with their original take/interpretations of that religious aspect while making a really fun game at the same time. I find the whole concept of all the emotions & terrible things of mankind being given a physical form by the miracle which is reflected incredibly in the world & character designs. Also I love that many of the items/characters give/have lore risk is similar to Dark Souls & I have heard great things about the Spanish voice acting you would probably enjoy it because it adds to the ambience/feel of the game. I’m glad you are already loving & having fun with this game. I am really looking forward to you paying the rest of it. Also you playing this game might get me to finally play Blasphemous 2 after having been too busy to do so for a while. Awesome 1st part & thoughts on the game. Have a great day/night & keep up the great work. :-)
Wooow.. this was not the game I thought I'd see here, but so happy to watch you play this. Thank you for the Entertainment for the Saturday evening. Hope you have enjoyed the game. 👍 I really need to play the second one as soon as I get some time to do it.
What a pleasant surprise to find in my notifications. When Blasphemous 2 was announced, I checked to see if you'd played the first one on the channel. The art style, music, presentation and lore of this game, make it a unique experience fit for someone like you who pays attention to and enjoys such details. Blessed be your path, Penitent One!
Easily one of my favorite Metroidvanias and one of the most visually striking games I've ever played, with incredible lore, story, voice acting, and gameplay to boot. This is going to be awesome! I'm so excited to watch you dive into this world and experience it all. Welcome to Cvstodia, Mapo! Words in the game that use the letter "v" in odd places is an old way of spelling. They are simply pronounced as if the letter were a "u" though. You didn't read the lore for the Biliary Flask or Tentudia's Hair, by the way. In true Mapo fashion, he went to the hardest area of the three you can choose from at the beginning of the game, the Graveyard of the Peaks 😂😂 You figuring out the way the Immaculate Bead works in the first episode is mind-blowing. That is an incredibly hidden mechanic that most players never notice or discover.
A brand-new playthrough of Blasphemous in 2024 was not something I expected to see, but is a welcome surprise. It is one of the best indie games out there, and it is an absolute banger of a game. Hope you enjoy your pilgrimage, Penitent One, and may the Miracle guide you.
Been looking forward to this. You should also give the Ori games a go as they are both great. Worth paying attention to which way the wind blows as it can both aid and hinder your jumps. Time it right and you can reach ledges further away than you can normally reach. 😉
Omg I can’t believe my eyes FINALLY I’ve been begging him to play this. It’s a tough game hopefully he sticks through till the end . I also can’t wait till he gets to the second one and gush over the music.
Thank you for streaming this!! One of my favourite streamers, and one of my favourite metroidvanias! Please, give 100% a go! ...And consider B2; DLC is imminent!
Blasphemous is a video game inspired by Christian imagery from Andalusia (a region in southern Spain famous for its Holy Week processions). The character's helmet is a reference to the "capirote", which is the conical hat worn by the "Nazarenos" (penitents who march in procession).
Nice to see this on the channel! If in the future you're ever looking for another good metroidvania, I highly recommend Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. It's easily one of the most fun and well made metroidvanias I've ever played, (especially with the dlc that just dropped) and I feel like it's being slept upon hard..! Think it might be right up your alley. But first things first of course; looking forward to following Blasphemous on the channel! Have fun!
Oh my god I played this fairly blind recently and it was sooo worth it. There were a few times where I got lost/stumped but that's not really an issue when this game is a masterpiece
This reminds me I still need to play the second one. This is probably the best game to fill the hole left by Konami abandoning their Castlevania franchise. It’s mind boggling that Hollow Knight and this come out, and they even licensed a show, and haven’t came out with a new Castlevania [music term] of [sad word].
Never got more than 3hrs into this game but I'm excited to watch this! Maybe I'll give it another go since the lore seems rich, and the vibes are to my liking.
After Hollow Knight, I was very curious to see what your next metroidvania game would be and I was hoping it would be Blasphemous. This is going to be freaking incredible!
As the game said, remember to press x at the moment of the counter-strike! Believe me, you'll KNOW when you hit it Also, latin doesn't have the letter U, so it uses V in its place as well
10:20 This is a baptism of blood, performed by the Penitent One from the now mutated Eldest Brother of the Silent Sorrow(As implied by Deogracias in the beginning at 12:40), this act is to mark his pilgrimage
Oh my Miracle!!!! I wanted this since such a long time Mapo. May the Miracle bless thee A little info: Blasphemous is developed by Spanish devs, and they have made the whole game inspired by their penance(hurting oneself to repent for sins), martyrdom and brotherhood culture, Semana Santa, Holy Week, where Penitents march in Procession, with floats depicting the passion of the Christ. The music and game are very Andalusian and Spanish. It is a grim and twisted take on the already grim Spanish Catholicism Also MAPO PLEASE HIT WALLS. Some are BREAKABLE and hide secrets The basic gist is that the land is under the affliction of a divine will, the manifestations of which are called The Miracle The devs went through insane anguish and struggles to make the game Much of the lore is present in item descriptions I hope you enjoy The game also has ng+ Good luck on the pilgrimage Penitent One The game can have a very few nude pixel shots, so be careful of that btw
Hi! This as spanish game (as well as I :) ) and it took their inspiration from spanish catholic culture (but, like in a very dark and twistted way). Enjoy!
Also, I recommend you to set the original spanish voice with english subtittles of course. This game has a very good dub from local spanish professionals.
It's very dark and twisted for sure, but then when you think about the history of Catholicism in Spain you kinda get why. They certainly weren't lacking in inspirational material 😅
Oh nice! This is a good "Metroidvania" (my favorite game genre). I haven't finished the sequel yet though, so maybe this will motivate me to pick it back up again. I know I'm pretty close to the end and there is an expansion coming out on Halloween.

My thoughts exactly seeing this haha. It was already the case for Majora's Mask, so I will gladly watch this and maybe appreciate the game more
True
@@Retro_Rainer thats not really the same considering mgs5 was an unfinished and rushed game
"Excommunication" is when you're rejected by your church.
I feel like you are the first Blasphemous player that ever read the lore about the items you find. This is going to be a great watch
He’s a great UA-camr cause he always figures out everything and finds all the secrets in all the games he plays including dark souls and elden ring
one of the few youtubers left who cares about lore and art design.
I just started watching the vid and good to know. I like people who care that much about the lore.
This is what I pay internet for
Sorrowful be the heart, Penitent One.
just a prior warning as this happened to me, its incredibly easy to _completely_ lock yourself out of the dlc for this game if you progress too far
Love your letsplays! Hint for latin pronounciarions: romans didn’t have the letter U and instead used V, so when you see an awkwardly placed V, it is pronounced as U (as in excomunicationis)
Hence W being ‘double U’ despite looking like ‘double V’?
We definitely don't have enough Blasphemous playthroughs on UA-cam. I'm SO excited to watch you play this Mapo!
Mapo picking banger after banger. I only recently finished Blasphemous 2. Beautiful artwork and osts. Such interesting themes as well.
This was unexpected! This is game is so much fun and has an incredible art style

Mapo don't read!
Also he took the ice cliffs first guys XD LMAO
Yesss so glad to see you finally play this amazing game!!
Awesome can't wait to watch this playthrough! Loved watching the hollow knight playthrough and this is a fantastic game as well.
Played it too on my channel. Amazing game. Artistic direction, difficulty, level design, lore… it’s all so on point

this game is a masterpiece. i had so many 10 hours sessions on this game.
If Castlevania and Dark Souls had a child.
Blasphemous!! I did not expect this. I can’t wait to watch this ☺️

Mapo: I'm gonna equip it...
Me: YES!!!!!!

Mapo, just like any souls game, there ARE invisible walls in this game.
Oh nice! This is a good "Metroidvania" (my favorite game genre). I haven't finished the sequel yet though, so maybe this will motivate me to pick it back up again. I know I'm pretty close to the end and there is an expansion coming out on Halloween.
