- I'm so excited to start this playthrough! I really enjoyed filming this and I'm already excited to do more and to share this adventure with you all!
If you enjoyed this video, please consider liking and subscribing.
If you've any feedback on what I can improve in recording then please let me know as I would love to take the feedback on board. This is my first time recording offline content so it was a tad nerve-wrecking.
I also would love to know how often you expect videos to be uploaded and the length as that would really help me!
I never thought i would see Taylor Swift play Hollow Knight, love it hahah
Omg you're far too sweet!!
LMAO so this is what she's doing on her tour break !!
I don't understand this reference.
THERES NO UTOPIA WITHOUT KANYE WESTTTT
@@drsophiedarling you do look like her 😂
The bottomless depression that hit me after she said she thinks silksong is coming out soon can only be fixed by the pure joy of watching someone experience this masterpiece for the first time
I can only pray!!
Nah I swear me too 😭 we're actually gonna get gta 6 before silk song at this point 😭
A summer child
Lul, you mean experience this AGONY for the first time, right? 🤣🤣😭
@@morie8594 watch they release it during GTA 6 release and it gets overshadowed 😭
Do not feel bad about getting lost. Hollow Knight was made to give you that experience. Like Cornifer says: "Getting lost and finding your way again is a pleasure like no other"
I think I just worry about boring you all if it's an hour of me running round like "HELP I'M LOST" haha!! Thank you though!!
@@drsophiedarling Honestly that's one of the best parts. Getting lost and discovering new things is a huge part of the intended gameplay, and it's always fun to watch people experience that.
Besides, you've got a compass, what could go wrong? :P
@@MumboJ I MEAN THAT'S TRUE 😂
@@drsophiedarling Honestly it's probably something most Hollow Knight players actually want to see😂
I've watched a lot of people rushing the game and not take their time to explore, because they are afraid of boring the audience, but it just kind of takes the magic out of it. Remember you're playing the game to enjoy it ^^
@@artthounasty5877 Then you'll love Ep 3 and Ep 5 that's released tomorrow as that's basically all I'm doing is running about and nosying haha!!
“He’s just a small guy on a journey” is the perfect first impression of this game. He is just a little guy! Don’t worry about all the various murders he commits later on, no stress
But they kinda deserve it 👀
The hollow knight community recognizes how wonderful an experience it is to discover things in this game for yourself. We are reliving that feeling vicariously through you, so at most we might hint in a direction, but we will not spoil you. That would spoil it for us, too!
YAY! I'm so glad to hear that!
Sadly there are plenty of people who will spoil.. Because there are always people who either do it maliciously or more likely are too eager to help that they do not consider things beforehand.
It's reaching a disturbing level for me. I keep looking for first time playthroughs to inject into my veins just to somehow survive.
@@thraden487 Oh god my addiction isn't just my own? I don't know whether to by comforted or disturbed lol
Couldn’t have said it better myself!
The genuine happiness when you found your first grub was *chefs kiss*
They're such precious babies!!
Just a little hint. You don't have to hoard the Soul like it's a precious metal. Heal whenever you have the soul to do it. Outside (boss)battles that is. In battle it's obviously more about *when* you heal.
Also, since you asked, I don't really mind how often the videos get uploaded, so long as they keep being uploaded. I'm always in the middle of watching one or two playthroughs of HK anyway...
Ah okay!! I'm a little hoarder when it comes to items in games so definitely a habit I should break haha!
I'm hoping to have episode 2 out on Wednesday or Thursday! Episode 3 will be Saturday afternoon BST!
I'm so wrapped up in whatever I'm doing, I forget about having it. Until I'm spamming it, desperate, near death, trying to kill a boss. Lol
Just a couple of non-spoiler gameplay pointers to enhance your experience:
1. Attacking up and down. Some players take a while to even figure out you can hit above and below you, but it looks like you’ve caught on. What you may not know is that hitting an enemy below you will bounce you up, allowing you to perform enhanced traversal or “pogo” attacks by chaining them. The downward slash is arguably as important to this game as shields are to Dark Souls 1.
2. Getting lost. Maps are your friend, but there are a lot of places you may need to return later with tools or knowledge. The map shop has markers to help you remember some of these places but you may want to keep a simple list to help too. If you’re ever unsure how to progress in the game, talk to Elderbug and he’ll nudge you in the right direction.
3. Exploring. Just like Souls, exploration is just as important as practicing combat. Search every nook and cranny, follow up on hunches, and check for hidden walls. You never know where a hidden spot could lead to items, enemies, lore, shortcuts, or all of the above. Similarly, check up on npc’s just like in Souls: exhaust their dialogue, check on them whenever you do something that might interest them, and if they disappear they’re probably somewhere else. Also, shopkeeper npc’s can be talked to if you go behind the counter and walk to the other side of them.
Glad to see you’re enjoying this unforgettable game and I can’t wait to watch it!
@lefishe5884 Omg thank you so much!!
Yeah, I definitely realised that there's some areas that I can't do yet and will have to come back! I've already a mental note of where I want to go next so fingers crossed my hunch is correct haha!
The tip for Elderbug is great to know in advance! I have been a bit worried about getting lost and turned around so it's nice to know there's a mechanic that can point me in the right direction if needed!
I'll try and keep the pogo attacks in mind! I imagine the timing needs to be quite specific to get that bounce right?
Aw I'm glad you are here for the journey! Welcome!!
@sophidarling pogo attacks are quite forgiving. You just need to swing before you hit the spikes/enemy
@@jetsetewalk7618 AH! That's good to know! Thank you!
@@drsophiedarling There are also some charms you can get that make pogo'ing a little easier, such as the Long Nail... there's another as well but I can't recall what it's called.
@@Palitato Ah thank you!! I'll be sure to keep an eye out!!
A couple pieces of non-spoiler advice I don't see mentioned often:
Enemy design is very deliberate. Some enemies (usually the ones that respawn in room change) are very simple and are really there so you can safely build Soul. They don't drop much Geo so if you don't need soul you can ignore them but if you need to heal up or charge so you can use your spells they're perfect for that!
The other is that bugs that look similar might act similar too. As you noticed the big club-weilding bug gave you a sample of another enemy coming up.
Have fun in Hallownest!
Well, since you asked at the start, here’s three pieces of advice that I give to everyone to starts this game are:
1) Get good at nail pogoing (striking an enemy/hazard below you while airborne.) It makes dealing with a number of enemies easier and is all but required for some later areas and puzzles.
2) Don’t be afraid to use your spells! Sure, they use SOUL, but they do a good amount of damage! Besides, if you’re at full SOUL, you might as well put it to good use.
3) Slap every wall and strike every ceiling. The kingdom of Hallownest hides a WEALTH of secrets.
37:28 OH MY WORD you are the litteral first person I have ever seen get that grub this early in the game. People never find that wall XD good for you!
I HEARD THE BABY! I LOCATED THE BABY!!
@@drsophiedarlingthat was my exact reaction my first time playing I was like "I hear a caterpee baby. Must save" 😂
Love that you are doing all the dialogues. Npcs can appear in different places in the game over time, always with new dialogue options and lore about different places and characters. Only the most patient, explorative and curious people will manage to get all the dialogue in this game (if its even possible), and the lore is pretty deep I assure you! 2 hours per video is fine. Fans will watch. Coins are to be spent. So buying everything is fine. Cheers!
PS: There are also collectibles in this game, which later can give even more lore. I will not spoil it you will find it out for yourself eventually.
Ohh I shall keep an eye out!! I like talking to NPC's as much as possible so I'm definitely going to try and speak to them as much as I can!!
"I think Silksong comes out....soon?". Oh, you sweet summer child.
BUT THEY ANNOUNCED IT AGES AGO RIGHT?!
@@drsophiedarling welcome to one of the biggest memes in the Hollow Knight community... the Silksong release date! XD
@@yeshevishman OH NO!!
There's a whole lot of different skills you get along the way so a lot of times if you can't reach something you can just leave it for later. There are endless amounts of ways this game can be completed, there's really no right or wrong way to go. I suggest like someone else said here, that you keep little notes and once you get the markers from the map store, use them. You're doing really well, keep it up and you'll have one of the greatest video game experiences of your life. This game is a gem.
Aw thank you so much! Yeah, I'm going to go and get the pins so I can mark out places that are worth coming back to! I can see that it'd be really easy to get lost if you're not making note of things! I'm really enjoying the game so far and the art style!
Dang what gamer. Intuiting so much about the game. Many folks who struggled a lot at the start of this game made it to the very end. Best of luck!
I feel having played through most of the Souls games - I am not adapt at being confused, lost, and wary of boss rooms haha!!
Yayyy, another joins the Hollow Knight adventure! I love to see new people get invested in this game, since it's quickly become one of my favorite games of all time! Take your time and enjoy it all at your own pace! :))
Also a few non-spoilery things I'd like to note;
1. You can see how many notches you have under where it says notches, don't look at where your charms are placed. The compass costs 1 notch and the Stalwart Chell and the Soul Collector costs 2 notches I believe, and you have so far 3 Notches in total, so you can totally apply one more charm :D
2. You don't actually collect any soul if your soul meter is full when hitting one of those soul-giver-things haha, I sometimes also forget this, but I'm trying to heal before hitting them so they can be of better use to me
That is all, I hope to see more of your gameplay! :D
Yes!! I know it’s small, but I LOVE that you exhausted all the dialogue!!! Quite a few tend to just braze right by it!
really enjoying this! a tip! especially when exploring, don't leave masks unhealed if you've got the soul to heal them. you'll end up regretting it if you suddenly find yourself two masks down in a sticky situation, when you could have healed in complete safety at many points before
Ah, another Hollow Knight playthrough to get sucked into. Have fun! It's always neat to see how often different streamers end up finding their own unique routes and order for doing things. You did really well in these starting areas (you immediately clocked the suspicious wall hiding a grub near the boss room, good job!) My one tip is just to be aware that the map can be a little misleading at times. If you simply step into an area, it'll get filled out and it'll look as if you already explored it even if you just walked in and immediately walked out. So just be aware of that. Definitely come back and re-explore places later on, it's easy to miss and/or forget about things.
And enjoy! (Oh and regarding episode length and frequency... I think an hour to an hour and a half is perfect? And I would not complain about episodes dropping as frequently as possible 😂 I'm just a sucker for this game and love watching blind playthroughs by first-time players)
Aw thank you so much for the feedback!! Okay - that's good to know that it's weird and fills out regardless of whether you've been in there before! I'm gonna have to start marking things of interest to come back for sure! Welcome on the Hollow Knight journey! 🥰
So pumped to experience this game with you! One of my favorites and you’re crushing it! ❤️
AW I'm glad you're along for the ride!!
I get anxiety from you not topping up your health 😂 but fun watching you play regrdless, looking forward to the next episode!
Oh no!! I'll promise to keep my health up to prevent anxiety haha!! Next episode should be up tomorrow evening 🥰
@@drsophiedarlinggood tip to keep you health full. Also you can just hold heal button to continuously heal several times in a row
most of the hollow knight enemys and all of the bosses have very nice conducting of their attacks. you can see patterns and intervals to heal
great video! waiting for more)
Great first episode, I just wanted to say that currently you have 3 notches so you can keep the compass and equip the stalwart shell or the soul catcher. 😊
Omg thank you haha!! I didn't catch on that I actually had 2 additional notches!! Glad you enjoyed the first episode!!
Huge warning: the Hollow Knight community is notorious for their backseating and spoiling. While generally kind people, a lot of the fandom is so passionate about talking about the game that they have no idea that they're ruining the magic for new players.
Be very wary when looking throughout your comment section, this game is best enjoyed with a blind experience.
Other than that, it's great to see another youtuber play Hollow Knight, enjoy your time.
Thank you!! I'll definitely be mindful - after 3 years of streaming on Twitch I'm kinda used to expecting that there will be some backseating so I don't take it to heart too much because I ultimately will play the way that I am comfortable playing!! 🥰
Always happy to see yet another new hollow knight play through. I look forward to watching you experience this wonderful game!
Aw thank you!! I hope you enjoy!!
ik im incredibly late, but i saw this a couple months ago, then adhd hit and i forgot, but im here again and the series is mostly(?) done, but im bingeing through everything w excitement.
Welcome!! The series is complete so you've a lot to go through and enjoy (I hope!)!!
I’m so excited to find someone else playing this game for the first time, I think you’re gonna love it. I’ll be here for the whole thing, whether you upload once every 4 days or once every 4 months!
Aw Michael that's so sweet!! Can't wait for you to be on this journey then!! 🥰
This is my first time coming across the channel and I'm super excited for you to delve into hollow knight!
I really like your playstyle, thought process and how you approach the game so I'm definitely subscribing!
As for lets play length, I would say 1-2 hours (anything in between is good)
Thank you!! You're far too kind!! Welcome in on the journey ❤
Oh what a joy it is to witness peoples first time in Hollow Knight!
One thing I'd like to comment on (because it's ingenious gamedesign idea, that always seem to go over people's head) is that first thing in the game they show you is that there's no fall damage. They literally drop you all that way before giving you control to show that of. And then immediately give you warning that you cannot Mario this thing, by giving the first enemy encounter spiky shape to indicate that there's touch damage. I'll stop geeking out and shut up now.
New viewer here, can't turn down a souls vet's first time in HK! You're getting acquainted quite nicely! One piece of advice, or rather, something to consider. You're likely playing with the analog stick to move considering the errant "up slashes" during your fight with that first big guy (the analog stick can be innacurate with attack directions). This is a completely viable way of going, _however_ , some harder areas and bosses later on in your journey require agile movement and attacks, and some players like myself find the D-pad to be useful in that situation because you can more quickly switch from left to right, up to down, etc. I sometimes explore with the analog stick and use the D-pad for tricky platforming and hard bosses. You may not need it for quite awhile, but anyways good luck!
OMG you are spot on haha!! I was using the analog so I'll bare that in mind that maybe the D-pad is a good option!
Thank you for that tip!!
I hope you enjoy taking this journey through Hollow Knight with me!! 🥰
Every 3-4 days would be amazing with the new episodes, but no pressure to always stick to it!!
Ah amazing!! I'm hoping to get a new episode released tomorrow afternoon as I'm off work 🥰
Ooooo yayyy, new hollow knight playthrough! It’s become my favorite game of all time! I think an hour and a half is a pretty good length for a video. As for frequency, just as often as you feel like!
theres so much lore in the opening poem alone I can't wait for you to find more
I'm so excited. I'll have to make a note of the poem to refer back to!!
love seeing people start up this game
if youre a souls vet you gotta remember 2 things youve likely interalized but dont think about anymore
you dont need to be at full health all the time, usually just focusing on not getting hit is way more important than getting healed. One of the first things people do once they get hurt is IMMEDIATELY start trying to heal (47:10), but healing takes time and youll get hit again.
So pick your times to heal AND attack
You can also talk to npcs in retail like iselda by going behind their counter and talking to them, its not the same as accessing their shop
have fun in this game. get lost, dont worry about dying, take in the sights
I am so excited to film and play more!! Yeah I caught on towards the end that you can speak to them behind the counter which is super exciting!!
"i hope nothing bad happens to her"
oh boy
This game is such a masterpiece. I was just recommended this video and I'm excited to watch a souls gamer get into their first metroidvania.
To be as spoiler free as possible and you may have already learned this by now but, in metroidvanias you will frequently come across things you cannot pass yet. Its what the whole genre is built on.
Oh absolutely - I'm a good chunk in now and I've learned a lot as I've gone. This game is phenomenal though!!
This will be fun, always happy to see new people discover this game and re-live that sense of wonder you can't have if you already know the game. Those first experiences are so special and should not be spoiled.
The one thing I will say that's not a big spoiler: Do not worry about getting lost or not knowing where to go, that is part of the experience. We've all been there. If you are truly lost, maybe talk to Elderbug, his dialogue will point to places that might be worth checking out.
Thank you!! Yeah, I'll try to worry less about getting lost and just enjoy the experience of exploring haha!!
I highly recommend that if you're interested in lore and story, read all the little bits and pieces of info on the charms, any items you pick up, and once you start getting them, the Hunter Journal entries! You'd be surprised what kind of little tidbits and secrets are revealed in the most mundane of item descriptions!
AH OKAY!! I'll definitely have to delve into that next stream!!
It's always nice to have new players try Hollow Knight.
Ill follow along once again, you seem like a really fun one. Gentle, too.
Aw thank you!! I hope you enjoy!!
Despite this being possibly my favourite game ever, I never watch other people’s first reaction to it, so I’m really looking forward to this! And from a fellow Brit no less :D much love from Blackpool, hope you have as much fun with this as most people do :)
EYYYY!! Aw I'm glad you are enjoying watching my progress! Thankfully we've Ep 2 already out and Ep is ready to go for tomorrow!
Okay, tips: 1) Sit at every bench you pass, or pass near to (which it sounds like you've learned)
2) Try not to start healing and then stop - your soul *does* drain while you focus, and it won't come back if you stop halfway through
3) Related, you can keep holding the button to heal more than one heart at a time (as long as you have the soul for it, of course)
4) The game FEELS open for the first two zones, but it actually railroads you quite strongly through them - you need to beat the False Knight to get the vengeful spirit, which is what lets you kill the armadillo-like dudes, one of which is the gatekeeper to the second zone. The second zone has a similar "you need the item from here to progress to the next place!" setup that I won't explain more of because spoilers.
Anyway, after the first two zones, the game *actually* opens up and hoooooooooooooly balls does it let you do things in basically whatever order you want.
5) You'll eventually get a bestiary; it contains world-building and also names each of the critters you encounter. Keep an eye on it! :)
6) Similarly, your inventory screen (hit...I think LT/RT, might be LB/RB, after pressing "select") contains descriptions and lore of the various things you've collected, including spells and other such things - worth reading everything at least once!
I'm really enjoying watching your first play through. It makes a nice change from watching speedruns. Keep up the great work and yay congrats on getting partner.
Thank you lovely!! Really appreciate that!!
Welcome to HK! I really like your energy. Having have played several times, it's really refreshing watching someone go through the same feelings and experiences I went through when I first played. I hope you enjoy the journey. I already watched till part 7 but I wanted to come back and leave a comment to help the channel!
Also, off topic, but your orange eye shadow looks so pretty and it matches your lipstick, outfit, hair and glasses frame ✨
Omg you're too sweet!! Thank you so much!!
Loved this first episode! The only tip I would give right now is to slow down a little 😅 you went through that starting section so quickly! (Nailing the platforming right away btw!) There are secrets and details to discover everywhere. I love this game so much, have a great time with it! 🙂🙃🙂🙃
*takes notes* Slow. Down.
Thank you for the feedback! I was worried about it being boring if I wasn't making any progress but I imagine most of the fun for the viewers comes from the exploring and having a look around! This game is absolutely adorable so I can't wait to jump in and film more!
@@drsophiedarling Yes, don't worry about progress! Every nook and cranny is progress in this game! Just play the way you want to play!
I'm so glad you posted this! Love watching playthroughs of this game. Instantly subscribed!
Omg welcome!! I'm hoping to get Episode 2 recorded and posted tomorrow!! 🥰
I just keep watching first playthroughs of Hollow Knight... Love seeing new people discover the world of Hallownest! 🖤
Also, i love this game and it's lore. Like there's even a really good reason why Myla is mining and it's not just for money or why when you hit an enemy they spill orange most of the time. I won't spoil anything though. The caterpillars are called grubs and the one with the mustache is the grubfather btw. Also, some enemies respawn when you enter a room but others only respawn if you sit at a bench. If you miss to buy a map from Conifer he will leave a note on the ground and you can buy the map from Iselda. Addishonaly some charecters like Iselda and the last stag have diffrent diolouges if you talk from them on the right and left, this is purly to mark what diolouge is for the shop and what is just normal talking. Also, the currency is called geo and not only can you pay with it but lore wise you can also eat it, we don’t see it in game however
This just popped up on my feed and this game is so magical. Defienetly takes my top favorite game of all time. The music the story the gameplay... just a perfect game imo
I adore this game so much already!!
This is so charming to watch! I'm a big fan of Hollow Knight, and I really suck at souls games despite really liking them, so this is extremely my thing
so glad you are playing this offline so you are not spoiled, there is always at least one person telling you what is going to happen or what you should be doing next, the entire fun of these kind of games is learning for yourself and exploring
1 hour ish episodes are good imo but whatever works for you
Yeah it's an absolute pain in the butt avoiding spoilers haha!!
Hi, new follower here. So here some non spoiler tips:
1. Heal
2. Try to hit enemy with downswing while in air (very useful move)
3. You can pin areas, where you can't reach to not forget. (Red or blue pin required)
4. Aware of spoilers in comments
5. Believe in yourself, this game can be hard, just try more
6. Try to learn and focused to understand attacks of the bosses on the first meet
7. Try recognise type of the attack by preattack animation (them all different for all enemies for each attack type)
Yeah I'm trying to be super careful navigating the comments to make sure I don't get spoiled haha!! 🥰
Really enjoying the playthrough. I love watching people play and explore this game. I own a Grub plushie that makes all the cute little noises.
I'M SO JEALOUS!! THE GRUB IS SO CUTE!!
Enjoying the playthrough. Love the game and fun to see people new to it checking it out for the first time. And post as often as possible. It’s not live so the audience can just turn it on whenever they want. I don’t watch many streamers but when I do I’m always looking to see the next vid or whatever asap
I'm hoping to record and post Episode 2 either tomorrow or Thursday and then Episode 3 on Saturday! I want to try and be as regular as possible so good to know that people will like having more rather than less!
I'm sure others have already said as much - but don't worry about if you're doing things wrong or missing something if you can't navigate an area right away! :D this style of game is all about revisiting areas as you gain new abilities and knowledge, so you're unlikely to miss things. It's more likely that you just don't quite have what you need yet to get somewhere right away if you find that you can't reach something. This game is great at drip-feeding you the experience and giving you ample time to learn how to utilize your knowledge.
A great first video! One of my all-time favorite games, and getting to watch people experience it for the first time is always enjoyable. Thanks so much for sharing your experience with it! I completely understand wanting to do vods rather than streaming for a game like this. Now to head off and watch the other part you have up!
Edit: I also find the bouncing/projectile-heavy bosses to be the most frustrating, timing is my weak point, so you're not alone, lol!
AWW I hope you enjoy watching me progress through! I'm really beginning to love and get the hang of this!!
I just started up a new playthrough of this game, which I guess is why this popped up on my feed. Hollow Knight is such an atmospheric game, and it's neat to see someone experience it for the first time! I'll be checking out more of your run.
Aw thank you very much!!
Damn, i cannot wait for next episode :) I really enjoy watching new people trying out HK for the first time :)
I should hopefully have Episode 2 out tomorrow night or Thursday night!! Then Episode 3 will be Saturday afternoon (BST) 🥰
Welcome to Hollow Knight! You're doing great so far! Your instincts to talk to everyone until they've got nothing new to say, and to examine all the details of the environment - those will serve you well.
I love seeing people experience Hollow Knight for the first time! It's a truly incredible game. If you love all the little creatures of the world (beetles, centipedes, spiders, and on and on and on) you will _love_ this game even more.
You're doing fantastic! There's no wrong way to play this game, so do whatever you feel is best. And don't worry about things like jumps you can't make - that just requires an ability you don't have yet, and you will get that ability later. That's what a metroidvania is all about; you'll backtrack later and be able to get places you couldn't before. Trust in the game design.
And yeah totally agree - livestreaming games takes away from the game. You end up missing a lot of the game because chat is demanding your attention. I've experienced that.
I like LP eps of basically any length!
HAH - false knight boss room fakeout :D yeah, this game is absolutely superb at communicating concepts and cues to the player without either belittling them or making them feel like a fool. really really well made game, super player-friendly.
I will be definitely tuning in for the rest of this. Love this game so much.
OH - yeah the grubs! They are grubs. Their species is grubberfly (that's their metamorphosed form). the mustache one is the Grubfather.
Yeah - Cornifer will sell you the map of the area when you enter it, but when you beat the area's boss, he'll leave. If you haven't bought the map by then, Iselda will sell it to you instead.
Oh, and one last tip, at the moment you _do_ have three notches, not two. You can equip both the compass and a two-notch charm like Stalwart Shell or Shaman Stone if you want.
The beginning of this game is so cute! Hope you enjoy, this was fun to watch!
I did! Thank you so much!!
People call this game "Bug Souls" for a reason... personally I think the connection to the Souls games is less about the difficulty and more of an intangible vibe that they share, similar themes, and similar ways in which the story is revealed in tiny bits and pieces. I'm always excited to see a new playthrough.
Oh definitely. I can see why people class it as a Souls Like because of the challenge aspect of it!!
Thank you for letting me experience this game with a fresh set of eyes again:)
And the comments honestly hurt me, as I also think finding out the mechanics and all those general things yourself is a magic in its own. Hope you'll not get too much guidance.
I'm glad you're playing my favorite game, can't wait to watch more!
I can't wait to film more!! Welcome in on the journey!!
Awesome first outing! Looking forward to watching your play through. The one thing I noticed that I haven't seen commented on is about charms. You'll probably have picked up on this by the next video, but you could actually equip soul catcher and compass at the same time. Compass uses 1 charm notch, soul catcher requires 2, and you begin the game with 3 charm notches.
While on the topic, I'll point out one feature that isn't really for new players, but that you might come to appreciate given that you clearly like challenge runs. If you try to equip a charm you don't have enough free notches for 4 or 5 times in a row, it will eventually let you do it. This is called being overcharmed. While overcharmed, you take double damage, but you do get the effects of the extra charm. Not exactly recommending you do this (especially early game), but just felt like bringing it up so you know it's there.
A few people did mention the charms so thankfully I know in advance now haha!! Also that's handy to know for challenge runs! I'll jot that down!! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Episode 2 should be out tomorrow! 💕
You actually did very well! It's really evident that you've played the souls games 😂
Btw, it's always a joy to see people discover Hollow Knight for the first time.
her fighting the gruz mother: do i need to be more aggressive with this thing?
me remembering how i cowered in the corner for most of this fight on my very first playthrough: YOURE DOING FINE

I hope that's a compliment 🙈 I can't help it - they're soooo cute!!
@@drsophiedarling I mean, it's definitely not an *insult*.. :) They definitely are adorable, though!
@@cybergeek11235 PHEW 😅 They are so cute. The little noises!!
Ooooh. Curious to see your reaction to certain characters/ bosses. Enjoy the game!
You are learning wonderfully! Keep exploring, keep your eyes open, and keep your hope high, especially in the dark as their are many things to discover and the experience of discovering it for the first time is something you should cherish.
Some words of wisdom that you have already stated yourself, this dialogue is from within the game, once you find the source of this wisdom then please look back on how it has helped you.

What I would give to experience Hollow Knight for the first time all over again 😭
It truly is an anomaly of a game that comes round once in a blue moon..
I honestly am so excited to start recording on Thursday because I want to play more already!! It's such a unique art style too!
Awesome! I think posting twice a week is fair and given the size and scope of Hollow Knight, 2 hour long videos seem like a good sweet spot 🙂 Can't wait to see how you progress
@@ThaOrthodoX Thank you for the feedback! I'm hoping to do all my recordings on the weekend so I can post Saturday afternoon and then Wednesday just so there's some consistency. However, I didn't expect the level of interest and now I'm like AHHH MUST RECORD NEXT EPISODE because this blew up more than I could have dreamed!!
@@drsophiedarling the Hollow Knight community is a very dedicated community and kind as well so you'll feel right at home. New playthroughs are ALWAYS welcome and so take a sub! 🙂
@@ThaOrthodoX THANK YOU!! Honestly, I have the sense that everyone is so so nice. I'm excited to play more and venture into the DLC's too. Hoping Silksong releases soon so I can add that to the channel, but I also have some other fun games too!!
Love watching people experience this for the first time. My all time favorite game right here.
you actually have three charm notches!! the charms menu is a little bit confusing to read but there's a little icon under your equipped charms that shows how many notches you have
Omg thank you so much!!
Yeah it really wasn't explained and I was a tad confused 😅
@@drsophiedarling
Basically you have Charm Notches and Charm Slots.
Each Charm takes one Charm Slot. Currently you have two!
Each Charm also has a 'cost', which is the Charm Notches. You have three of those.
So you could have two charms with a cost of one and two respectively, or you could use two with one notch each and just have an empty notch.
You CAN over-notch your charms, but there's a penalty that's pretty brutal (I think it's taking double damage?) You have to try it a few times to 'force' the charms to fit, but it might be worth doing in some cases where you think the benefits of your charms would outweigh the danger of the extra damage.
@@Palitato Ah!! I really wish the game explained that more thoroughly but I guess that's something we're expected to figure out ourselves haha!! Glad to know in advance though!!
Yeah it's basically one of the very few notable design mistakes in HK. I've seen so many LPers get confused about how many Notches they have! Maybe there shhould be some divider or something to make it clear the word Notches is going with the three dots below and not what's above it. Fairly minor as problems go but it does confuse so many folks.
@@Palitatothere is no "charm slots"
This game is one of the best but also so frustrating at times, currently watching this to take my mind off one of the bosses I can't beat needed a break lol. Also I find the community so supportive in not sharing spoilers, take it from someone whose taking forever to finish it lol
First time viewer here as well, but already subscribed. Watched the whole thing, and I do like the length of the episode just fine. Also, I very much understand doing this offline, this game is best played unspoilered.
As for some tips, here's some general ones that will not spoil anything. You can heal multiple masks faster if you just hold down the button, it'll keep channeling until you release the button. At the end you noticed that you can talk to Sly from behind, it works with all vendors. They do get new dialogue every now and then when progressing through the game. Same with the stag, it will comment about every new stag station you find. For movement, you will indeed feel that there are many places that you just cannot reach, but you will eventually with additional abilities. And if it helps, you can buy the two last items from Iselda, both allow you to place a marker to the map yourself as a reminder to come back later. Besides the color, they are identical.
And, they are indeed grubs, not catepillars. That name is also eventually seen in the game.
AH! Good to know that they both do the same thing so I don't waste my coin! I'm definitely going to have to mark some areas to come back to!
The tip for multiple masks is a god send! Maybe I won't die as much now pausing to heal 😂I'll have to go have some one on one talk with Iselda!
Glad to know that the length is fine! I'll definitely keep it around this length as it seems to be the best of both worlds. Not too long but long enough to get stuff done!
WELL THE GRUBS ARE ADORABLE 🥰
I watched the whole vid! Absolutely loved it :)
AW THANK YOU!! I hope you enjoy taking this journey with me! 🥰
I bet this is gonna be my favorite hk gameplay You seem very nice ❤️❤️
Nice vid, this is one of my favorite games so it's quite enjoyable watching someone experience it for the first time. I wish I could experience this game for the first time again lol. You're quite good at this game too, only dying to false knight once is impressive, so I'm sure you'll do quite well. I'll keep checking in for new vids.
@9:40 the masks were always on the door haha (episode 6 reference)
Shows how perceptive I am omg hahaha
@@drsophiedarling you almost Mandela effected me. I had to check!
So two things. 1. Super excited to have discovered another Hollow Knight playthrough. 2. Sly said he would thank you properly. And he did. By saying thank you.
most definitely explore everywhere!! there are A LOT of hidden walls as well that may not seem like they can be broken! hollow knight is such an awesome game, enjoy! ❤️
I'm definitely going to double back in later episodes now I've discovered some new skills!!
For what it's worth, I prefer it when the video is about the player and their experience with and thoughts about the game rather than responding to a live chat. I know a lot of other people feel otherwise.
Yeah - I didn't want to interrupt the game with breaks to talk to chat or risk backseating/spoilers that would ruin the experience so I'm glad that I filmed this offline!!
estus management tip
if u slap the totem thingies that give u soul while on full soul meter u basically just waste it, make sure u use up all u have currently to heal And Than slap the totem to refill
I am glad that you decided to play Hollow Knight offline. 👍 Even UA-cam comments for this game attract a bunch of spoilers and backseating, but nothing compared to a live stream chat. Besides, this game deserves your full attention, and you will surely enjoy it more without chat distracting you. Personally, I wouldn't watch you at all if you were streaming this. Have fun!
Oh god I know! I've been REALLY careful with UA-cam comments to avoid spoilers. Backseating I just let it roll off my back because I get that people are excited but I'm going to play my way haha!!
A small fairly non-spoiler that might be interesting to have - the lil friend is genderless! I don't think it's ever really mentioned beyond other characters referring to the lil friend as "It"! It can be really easy to miss
Hope you enjoy your run through!
OMG NO WAY!! Little non-binary baby!!
@@bananea That's so cute!! I can't wait!!
It actually is mentioned, quite fully, in the deeper lore of the game as you uncover the origins of your little friend there. That's why a certain someone is known as the "Gendered Child" because she had a gender where certain others did not.
@@Palitato Please don't, because y'all are getting into spoiler territory (the 'it' thing is...okay I guess). There's no reason for her to need to know this right now so why would you bring it up? I get the excitement, believe me I've been there, but please just don't
@@SecondFloor2311
mentioning that one character has a gender is not a spoiler, lmao?
i LOVE watching souls players experience hollow knight. it's not the same, but the fromsoft experience gives you really good instincts that serve you well in this game too. in a reddit AMA, team cherry were asked if DS was an inspiration and they said no, BUT they were inspired by a lot of the same games that dark souls was. which i think is really fun and interesting and kind of speaks to how we make art in conversation with other artworks. anyway, i hope you have a good time! welcome to hallownest :)
Aw thank you for the warm welcome!! I'm really loving this game and I definitely think Souls have served me well instinct wise haha! :D
This game is SO much bigger than you expect it to be
It's HUGE!!
It's been a while since you've posted this video, but as a response to some of what you're saying about feeling nervous about youtube and not knowing what's going on in the game, you're doing really well! This looks like a really fun youtube playthrough, and you're making good progress I think!
As with a lot of people this is my favorite game and I am so happy to have found someone else doing a let's play on UA-cam! As for video length and schedule. I like an hour to 1 hour 30. Every 4ish days. But I'll take whatever! I'm addicted to watching people play this game. I hope you love it!
Amazing!! I was going to sit down on Saturday and Sunday to film Saturday evening and Wednesday's video but I never expected this warm of a reception so I'm going to try and record Episode 2 on Thursday!! 👀 Can't wait to have you along for the adventure!
@@drsophiedarling I already subbed lol
@@NeoNineOne AHH THANK YOU!!
Great video! Im looking forward to the next one.
this was a very fun first episode :3 i hope you have a really good time with the rest of the game, and i’ll be sure to keep an eye out for the following parts !
since you mentioned in the start that you’d like some 0 spoiler tips, i had just a few come to mind as the episode progressed:
- for when you’re outside of combat, i’d recommend using up your soul to stay at full health at basically all times, because you’ll probably find lots of little bugs to knock around for more soul anyways as you wander!
- still on the topic of healing, when recovering more than one health with soul, you can just hold down B (assuming you’re using an xbox controller which i think is the case from what i remember seeing) rather than doing “hold B -> release B -> hold B,,,” it’ll be noticeably faster!
- something to note about using your spell, rather than using B, i think the general player-base’s consensus is to use RB instead! i think that’s the default “quick cast” bind in the game. it’s just a bit faster because the game, when using B, delays a tiny bit to differentiate between you using B to use focus for health vs you using a spell!
of course these are all just little suggestions that you don’t need to follow if you don’t feel like it :3 good luck with the rest of your playthrough!! and an fyi that the community can at times be a bit… much when it comes to trying to help/guide people through the game. regardless, playing through it however you’d wish to play is the best way in my opinion rather than in the informed way that people often suggest. in the end it’s a metroidvania and if you can go a certain direction, it’s okay to go there even if it might not be the most common route that people go on their first playthrough at that’s totally okay- i’d just recommend make your way through the game your own way ultimately :3
(also as an aside, i think you’re totally good to swear on youtube so long as it isn’t in the very first few minutes of the video- nor do i think your audience for hollow knight would mind it! but if you would rather censor them regardless, there was the one [at around 57:26 iirc] that you mentioned potentially bleeping that you didn’t in case that was accidental)
Aw thank you so much for this wealth of information!! A few had mentioned holding B but I was unaware of the RB as a quick cast so that's really handy to know!!
I'm hoping to get Episode 2 out either Thursday or Saturday! I was just planning to wait till Saturday but I really did not anticipate this to blow up the way it did and now I'm excited to get Episode 2 filmed and uploaded!!
Yeah - it's partly why I didn't want to stream this game as I knew the backseating would be incessant! Easier to ignore comments offline than when you are live and playing! Thankfully everyone has been super super lovely in wanting me to take my time and explore, so I feel less stressed about feeling like I need to be progressing and can just wonder about a bit haha!
I was torn between bleeping or not but I thought not to because they were 2 really minor swears quite late in so didn't think it would be too much of an issue!
@@drsophiedarlingof course! ty for taking the time to read that mini-essay of a comment :3 i know my tips are kinda just small little things but to be honest you did really well for your first time playing, as someone who has watched far too many first episodes of people’s playthroughs…
i think your idea for episode frequency is great by the way! every four to seven days is great- and while i of course four might be a good idea just for frequency’s sake, going up to weekly eps makes perfect sense if you’re ever too busy for more especially with a full time job and a life lol.
and definitely a good idea imo, hollow knight stream chats often infuriate me whenever i see them for blind playthroughs… a lot of it does come from just a love of the game, but to be honest i know i was way more lost than most people i watched play the game on my first playthrough and i wouldn’t have had it any other way! anyways yeah good shit w/ the vid :D always nice to have another good hollow knight playthrough to look forward to ! :3c
@@azaleawa never need to thank me!! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch let alone comment. Warms my heart to see people engaging and offering sound advice too!!
Yeah, I'm beginning to phase out live streaming in favour of UA-cam due to the demands of work and life in general so I'm super excited for this journey and to share it with you all!! 🥰
@@drsophiedarling that makes sense a lot of sense! well good luck on this journey o7 if you’re always as entertaining as you were in this episode i have no doubt it’ll be a fun one to spectate :D
I'm glad you're having a good time, you're doing great! don't worry about doing it 'right' - if you just keep going the game won't let you down. have fun, explore the world, and forget about the complainers.
I'm glad you're not going to upload more than a couple of times a week - more than that can get tedious to keep up with.
Aw thank you!! It is such a cute game and I cannot wait to explore more!!
Yeah - I work 40 hours a week whilst editing my PhD. Content creation is very much a hobby and I'm beginning to lean into UA-cam more than Twitch because it fits in better with my life and is more accessible than streaming 🥰
@@drsophiedarling, I was lucky to be able to work on my dissertation full time while my partner mostly took care of our baby. I can't imagine trying to finish a thesis, work full time job, take care of kids... and also somehow manage a channel besides?
you've bitten off a lot - I hope you like to chew.
@@dr.kraemer I am fortunate that I don't have kids (yet) so I have some spare time, but yeah working and content creation can be tough. However, UA-cam is actually giving me MORE freedom than Twitch so I'm really happy to begin this journey into offline content! Congratulations on your PhD!
@@drsophiedarling ha, it was a very long time ago, but thanks.
I thought you said something about kids, I must have misheard. still a lot to do though.
if you've never watched anybody elses's first playthrough of this game, you may not realise, but you're doin really well ☺
I haven't watched anything haha! Gone in as blind as I can!! That's good to know though!!
i hope you have a really magical experience with the game. it's definitely a game that has the potential for that
You can tell that someone isn't used to metroidvanias when they aren't trying to hit every wall.
I started my first playthrough a few weeks ago. I was skeptical at first but it's been a great game although it's royally pissed me off a few times, Shaaa! Lol. Well worth 11 bucks and on my all time favorite Metroidvanias list. Btw, you're so beautiful! 😍
I've never played a Metroidvania before so this is my first! Super excited to see how this progresses!
GAH you are far too kind! Thank you!
Metroidvania is a term for these types of platforming games. I'm guessing I'm 75% through the game so I can watch you play without spoiling anything.
Anytime, doll. 🤤
I absolutely love watching people discover hollow knight.
15:12 "I hope nothing bad happens to her" are the most depressing words i've heard all day considering we all know what happens to her ...
Can't wait to see more! It's going to be amazing!
I can't wait to film more!! ❤
a little no spoiler tip just for confidence's sake: if u are capable of wandering somewhere - u Are supposed to be there, dont worry about just walking into something u arent prepared for. theres several clear progression stages throughout the game and the higher level areas where ur not supposed to be this early on are locked in areas u are physically incapable of accessing without using some pretty meta knowledge like speedruner skips, so just go places and u'll be fine
"I ¿think? I can call myself a Souls veteran." Says the woman who has done Lvl 1 hitless Malenia. Yeah, Soph. Yeah, you can definitely call yourself a Souls veteran. Only an idiot would argue with your Very Well Documented credentials. Really looking forward to this playthrough.
HAHAHA! I don't want to brag and then show myself up by being trash at Hollow Knight 😂
5:18 *ahem* LIFEBLOOD discovered.
