    Top Man! That's the way to do it, open and honest yet you're open to new products but as long as they tick the boxes you require for a super camp. Well done, that was great to watch. Good luck doing the Fjallraven Classic - hope you record that each day.

    Condensation is due to basic Laws of nature (warm moist air from within the tent coming into contact with the colder fly inner side and condensing there) - it can be mitigated, but never eliminated; differences in ventilation properties and resultant condensation levels vary between tent makers and their respective designs of course, and different venues on different days have different conditions and humidity content too. Overall, I’ve heard far more comments about condensation being encountered by users of the Hilleberg Soulo than the Nortent Vern 1, but of course it’s still early days. It’s great that you’re addressing this aspect in this video. 👍🏻

      I’d rather have a bit of condensation than a tent which isn’t fit for purpose

    Very grounded and good video. Got the Vern 1 myself. Apart from a few cheap-feeling aspects (guylines, inner tent loops and flimsy plastic hooks on the ventilation caps), it really is a piece of quality with well tought out solutions. I swapped the guylines out with the ones from the Fjällräven Abisko line, and that has massively raised the quality feeling for me.

    • @tomatron64
      @tomatron64 9 місяців тому

      Oh and i also swapped the packbag with one from an Abisko Shape 2. much superior.

    • @HairyHiker2022
      @HairyHiker2022  9 місяців тому

      Yeah the guylines do feel cheap, and bulky too. I don't have much of an issue with the vent clips as those little mitten clips are surprisingly strong and with the bungee cord I don't see them being an issue, but I totally get ya.

    If there was a perfect tent and price for everyone, there'd only be one type for sale. There's lots because everyone has different likes and wants. The worst condensation I've ever had was in a hammock, under a tarp. No lack of ventilation but everything was drenched. This is the only time it happened in over a hundred nights. You can't make a tent view on just a couple of nights. Nice to hear sensible thoughts.

  • @adge_ventures4915

    Bang on Scott. Im a huge advocate for telling it how it is and with tents and hiking its incredibly subjective. You'll command more respect being like this than any of the eluded to channels. Its 2024 though so id expect some crying a**es and dummy spitting but hey ho.
    For the record and in theme. I love the ultralight stuff for multi dayers and im a scarp, kuiu storm star and durston xmid fan boy.......even though i actually own a scarp ultra and a zpacks duplex. We all love our gear and can justify why but if someone wants to terror them......i wont cry about it 😂
    Really refreshing to have someone tell it how it is and as long as it stays that way......ill be watching mate 🙂
    Take care,
    Adge

      @HairyHiker2022  9 місяців тому

      Thanks mate really appreciate it. Yeah I've got mates who are well into the ultralight life. Like I say it's whatever floats your boat of course. Maybe when my right knee (which is made of biscuits) finally gives up I may have no choice but until then I like my luxuries haha.
      How do you get on with the Scarp ultra? I had one but just couldn't get on with it. It was a shame because previously I've had silnylon scarp1s and they're a great tent.

    I'll be homeless this Saturday and bought the cheapest tent from Decathlon. Would you recommend this Vern 1 for urban camping?

    • @HairyHiker2022
      @HairyHiker2022  5 місяців тому

      I probably wouldn't. I'm no expert on urban camping though. But I'd have thought something less expensive, and with a bit more room would probably serve you better.

    I have the vern 1 and recently I have seen 2 videos that people been out in winds above 40 and the poles have snapped and bent but myself into astro photography and like to have a camp fire going is not going to camp out in really high winds but this have happened.

      @@HairyHiker2022 I will be looking at purchasing the 10.25mm poles as better for the windy conditions if I decide to go out in those condition's but apart from that the tent seems to be ok but they recon the zip storm cover is a bit slack and flaps about in the wind, but apart from that it not a bad tent for the money I suppose.

    Hi Scott. Regarding your Thermarest mattress, they have a lifetime guarantee. If you contact Cascade Designs and put a warranty claim in, they should send a replacement out to you. I did it with an Xtherm that had a popped baffle. I posted it to the address they gave me and received a brand new one about a week later 👍

    My vern will be delivered by the end of April beginning of may. So may not get much chance to really test it till winter... my lightweight 4season tent is the fjallraven abisco light 1.. An amazing tent. I have the oex flux mat ( I think it's r rating is 3 ). My only other piece of oex kit is the bobcat 1. Again an amazing little tent. No sorry i tell a lie , I have the leviathon 900 sleeping bag. Though I have only used it once and am selling it as I got the Rab ascent 1100 around the same time. My winter sleeping mat is the Rab 5.5 it's a beast, it takes up so.much room in my bag.. As you say there is no perfect tent , I use different tents for different camping requirements.. if I just go to a local woodland I may use a cheapy tent , my naturehike cloudpeak 2 for example... I did read somwhere that a hilleberg black label with footprint comes in at about 3kg, so the vern is not too different. When I go up in the mountains I take the abisco or the bobcat. At the time the bobcat cost me 40 somthing quid . What a bargain it was , and I trust it because it has never let me down, in some terrible weather. Take care out there.

    • @HairyHiker2022

      Thing is I'd say the vern 1 is probably more comparable to the Soulo red label which is a bunch lighter. I also have a bunch of tents. Also for different purposes. I think the only way to get the perfect tent is to make your own but sadly those skills I lack haha

    I totally agree there's no such thing as a perfect tent I've got a few Xmid kuiu mountain star and storm star and hilleberg niak all have the own little faults either weight size or price the beat tent is that suits you the best.

    • @HairyHiker2022
      @HairyHiker2022  9 місяців тому

      For me I think the perfect tent would be a side entry tunnel tent around the 2kg mark with a big vestibule. The closest think I've seen is a Wechsel Pioneer 2 but it's not quite right. Haha

    • @craig3401
      @craig3401 9 місяців тому

      @@HairyHiker2022 we're always searching but there's always something not quite right.and everyone is different for me I'm a dome tent fan with side entry.my niak is perfect for me on size and shape but falls down on price and not good in snowy conditions.im lucky I have tents for all seasons and eventualities though.and as for condensation all tents suffer with it you can pitch 2 tents sleep in 1 keep the other empty and it will still have condensation but some tents are easier to deal with it that's why I won't have single skin or inner 1st pitch.

    • @HairyHiker2022
      @HairyHiker2022  9 місяців тому

      Ain't that the truth. I've had so many tents in the last few years it hurts my head. I think I will go to my grave before I find that holy grail. Just bought a Nallo this week. I've got a halland 2 LW which is a great tent but I wanted more strength. The nallo with side entry and an altered inner would be pretty damn close to perfect for me if I'm honest but at the price I'm not prepared to mod it in any way.
