What are your biggest challenges in UA-cam? Recording? Editing? Knowing what to say and staying on topic? Freezing on camera? I've struggled with all of these at various times and they're completely normal :-)
Hi Rob, Could you do a video touching on how YT taxes work? I hear google takes them out, yet channels are considered self-employed. Thanks- Merry Christmas!
I started in May of this year with no expectations of anyone watching. I just film stuff I'm doing and talk about it, mostly because it's like doing stuff with friends. The experience has been great; instead of my usual boring end of year document for work, i made a UA-cam video. The board of directors loved it. The experience I gained this year was immensely helpful for this. Your advice has been great, so thanks for doing what you do.
I've been that squirrel stuck in his den! 🐿️ Medically retired at 39 and going stir-crazy, but I just launched my own channel! 🎉 Starting to get out and about, thanks to all the inspiration and amazing walks!
Hi Rob - thanks for your encouragement, I've been binging on your helpful videos! It's been great to learn from you as a new over-50 UA-camr. Question: How do you feel about UA-cam shorts? For some reason, I seem to be getting subscribers this way, more than my longer videos. I'm glad about it, but am puzzled why! 🤣 Do you have a hypothesis?
It really depends on your content... the type of videos you make and what they're about. Some people's content ports well from Shorts to long form, whereas others does not. If you've found a formula that works, it's best to stick with it!!
You've inspired me (a 61 year old Radio DJ) to go after it fulltime with your videos. Thank you Rob. I say this politely and respectfully but the first video of your I watched, I thought to myself, :if this guy can do it, I can do it. But, I've found that that is the whole point to your channel. From leaving the mistakes in to simply taking a walk. If the info is valuable, it's a UA-cam video. Thank you for all the golden, valuable info. Merry Christmas! Bo
Happy Christmas Rob. Im fortunate that my channel is based around my nomadic life and mindfulness journey. Its purely a calming documentary. Love these walking talking videos, you really have nailed it.
Looks wonderful where you are! Very inspiring surroundings. Haven't seen snow here in south UK for years.😕 Just constant grey gloomy overcast skies in the main. Or rain. Not nearly as attractive to film in. Think I'll just have to keep watching videos about making videos, like yours! Merry Christmas again, Rob! 🎄🎄
Hey Rob, it's been amazing to see your camera game get better and better on the unscripted videos. I've been struggling with filler words....I don't like it but then again nobody has complained every time I say "uh." My channel went through a growth spurt the past 3 weeks and still nobody has brought it up. I just show up everyday and be me. That seems to be the ticket. Thanks for all your valuable advice and contributions to the creator community.✌
Rob and Allie Marmion from the GroundedLife channels have a great chapter in their you tube course about negative comments. It gave me courage to have a plan. I'm glad brought it up in this video also, I think it helps get it out in the open and disarms those negative comments.
Hi Rob, thanks for the insight! I actually did a couple test vids and used my natural voice, not my ol airline pilot voice and it was fine. Thanks for your channel and positive attitude! Rob
Thanks Rob, lovely snow! My biggest challenge has been recording myself on camera and then editing and thinking geez, do I really talk like that and look like that! Current challenge is to talk on camera outside, in public, I'm working on it....practice, just keep doing it, just keep taking action, one step at a time. 🙂
Rob I love how you change up your scenery! It is so refreshing. I started my channel a few years ago at 39. It been a journey that I've enjoyed. I love the community that I've found on UA-cam. Keep teaching and encouraging. Your content is appreciated ❤
The most inspirational part of this video was the fact that you were walking in such frigid temperatures. I keep wanting to do a walking video, but I live in upstate New York so it’s also cold here this time of year so I just kept saying I’ll wait till spring and I’ll have those outside videos, but you have just inspired me to tough it out and just do one! I have faced my fear of speaking in front of the camera. It’s getting a little easier, but I am over worrying about that now my concern is just having good ideas and content and growing my channel. If you can get out and about in the cold weather then so can I! Also, I am hoping that when I start getting negative comments, I can just remember that at least they gave me some view hours if they watched it and responded even if it’s negatively.
Dress warm! My biggest problem when filming out in the cold is my hands get cold, so I need gloves. But have to take the gloves off to press record, get notes from my pocket, etc... then put them back on. Also, any gear that you have to carry, like the mini tripod I carry, will get VERY cold especially if hanging on to it for a long time. So even if I don't need the gloves while recording, I definitely like to have them for the walk home :-) These are the things I've learned by just doing it... and that's the bottom line... you have to just go out and do it. The first time you do you will realize there are things you forgot or would have done better. The only way to learn exactly what you need is to try. You'll get it! Best of luck to you :-)
Great video, Rob. You are spot on. I have faced all of the issues and emotions. Great to listen to other people who have traveled the same path. Keep up the great work.
Appreciate your knowledge Rob, I "officially" started content creation in October myself. I'm a retired military veteran here in Utah & fortunately my family time does coexist with my UA-cam channel content as I make a lot of videos about outdoor adventures and things that people that are considering to visit this beautiful state might want to know about i.e. hiking trails, national parks and hidden gems, best time of year to visit these places all the little details that just Googling may not provide someone all the answers, Happy Holidays! 🤙
Thank you for being real, honest and authentic I love your videos! Very helpful advice and I’m getting myself ready for the new year to start putting some content out there. 🙏
I agreed it is fun rewarding and challenging. My greatest challenge is the editing to get my segments in the right place and length. I appreciate your input. Thanks. Merry Christmas 🎄
I love how your channel has reached such success! I’ve been at it a while now, I’m so happy I have the gift of endurance. I’m climbing up that mountain of failures knowing one day I’ll be standing on the top. All the challenges you speak on are true. My 30 day challenges have been the times I tend to gain subs. This video has given me such hope. Thank you for taking the time to film this and share with this awesome community! I love your cat btw! I watch often but don’t comment all the time. I always think big time YT people can feel overwhelmed with comments. You have always answered mine which is so kind.
I try to answer all comments... not because I feel I have to but because I enjoy connecting with those who spend the time to comment! So thank you :-) Best of luck to you this year!! :-)
Thank you! I appreciate it. I feel the same about my comment section. Time is valuable, I always feel honored when people watch and leave comments. Wishing you continues success in 2025.
Great Video. I think I'm going to start my own 30 day challenge on January 1st. What a great idea. Now I just need to follow through. A friend of mine always told me "Success is the ability to follow through"!
I totally agree! You can do it... just remember, even on days when you don't feel like it or you don't love the video you recorded, upload it anyways! Force yourself to move forward. You'll be so happy you did after 30 days! Best of luck with it and let me know how it goes! :-)
Fellow Canadian, started a channel this year and over 40 trying to learn how this platform works. Visual is critical, being connected to the audience is imperative and so I’m working to improve that aspect. Great advice overall, new sub and keep posting!
I started my channel over a decade ago to just share with friends and family, but in August I changed to sharing my wife’s dementia journey and today I’m at 12.6K dedicated subs… it’s been a super therapeutic and gratifying activity.
Great points, Rob. I sure do like your walks while helping us new people to become a better you tuber. This video hit exactly on everything I am now currently working on to get onboard with my you tube channel.
Merry Christmas! And thank you again for your wisdom. It's as if you're answering questions I haven't allowed myself to think about yet (like balancing thinking (worrying??) about UA-cam and spending time with family and friends).
Success is not easy but just keep going. Sometimes its not your fault, growth just takes time. I'm just coming out of that dreaded slow growth stage and it feels good 😊
Great video! My biggest challenge is filming. Since my channel is sewing related sometimes it hard to figure out how to set up my camera angle effectively and making videos fun and topics that sewist want to watch!
I totally understand... when your set is different every time that can be time consuming to get setup for each video. If it's possible, try to find a "typical setup" you can use most often, and have your camera/lights/mic and sewing equipment in position for that setup. That'll make it much easier to just "press record" and make a video when the inspiration hits! Best of luck with it! :-)
Thank you for these videos. YT just sent your videos to my feed today. I plan on watching all your vids, in prep for becoming a YT creator. P.S. It is so beautiful where you live! Greetings from Las Vegas, we haven't had rain in over a year it seems.
Thanks for this Rob! I have to not watch the monitized in 4 weeks with 5 videos type content. It gets me bummed and thinking I can’t do it. Your walk and talk videos are wonderful. You are so good at it. I have a DJI Pocket 3 but my stuff just doesn’t come out that great. I need to practice I guess.
Practice will absolutely help! Just practice with short videos less than 5 minutes first... watch it back and then do it again making adjustments with where to place the camera, etc. It'll come! Best of luck with it!!
The challenges you mentioned are right on target. Thank you for providing great content this year!🎄 Video editing is getting easier as I go. I needed to learn from scratch, and while not perfected, I'm so much faster than I started.
Great simple video. Im wanting to start my own chl as well & have had all of the same thoughts u addressed here. The more videos i watch like yrs the braver im becoming. Beautiful scenery! Looks like a white Christmas for u. Thanks for sharing & inspiring others.
Oh my goodness! I have a fear of talking to the camera and then I pause and remember what I’m saying. I work a FT job and my husband doesn’t run the camera the way I would if I were on the job with him. We get it done but it’s moving slower than I would like. Thanks for the insight!!!
Thanks for this video. I struggle constructing a sentence alone in a dark room, talking infront of the camera is an absolute nightmare for me. So I've been scripting my cooking videos as Voiceovers but I dont feel like I'm not being my true natural self. I'm gonna take your advice to practice more. Merry Christmas. 🎉
I press record and I can't remember any lines, not even how to start lol I'm getting there though. Putting in the reps is really helping! Yes the slow growth is so painful, I have focused on my scripts, recording and editing instead of getting to frustrated BUT I do refresh a lot too I've also leaned into posting consistently, even if no one is watching, I started 3/week because I needed to get the reps in I was aiming for quantity. In the new year I am doing 1/week aiming more at quality now. Thanks for your inspiration, Merry Christmas Rob
Hi Rob. Still a big fan of your channel, and down to earth talking style. How would you schedule to start a UA-cam channel with a full time job and two small kids? I think it’s really hard to find the time and energy.
The short answer is, "Do only what you can". With two small kids and a full time job I would probably spend an hour or two in the morning on videos before I had to go to my job... and again a couple hours after the kids went to bed. Everyone is different though... you have to find what works for you. You may not have the time other people have to devote to it, but if you're passionate about it you'll find the time, somehow. You just have to be creative. If you can only spare a couple hours a week, spend those hours wisely. There's a lot of learning in the beginning so that's what you'll spend time on at first. Best of luck to you!
The camera I'm using is my iPhone 14 Pro Max and I have it on a small tripod. I made a video about how I do these here: ua-cam.com/video/laxfUFDftS8/v-deo.htmlsi=I57GRt_7Cm9YZzqz
Oddly enough, you would think me as an autistic introvert would have a hard time talking to the camera, but, once I get talking on camera I ramble too flipping much so I have to create outlines for myself if I want to talk about a specific subject. I can't shut the F up. It's like I've been waiting for this moment my whole life 😂
Haha I love that!! "You've been waiting for this moment your whole life" :-) Interesting challenge you have! I think for you just try to limit the time you spend on each bullet point. If you go over, have a little fun with it! Like, make fun of your "challenge of know when to shut the F up" lol!! I think that would be a cool and relatable challenge for a lot of people! Might be entertaining to watch too. You might have something there ;-) Best of luck to you!!
Hi Rob, nice to see your video’s! I am Bregje, 45 years old from the Netherlands. I have for several years the wish to start my youtube channel. But I had always the idea I needed the most expensive equipment. A camera, light and sound things. But I have a problem. I have a iPhone 11 and a Macbook with mcmontery ios . But when I want to use iMovie for editting, its doesn’t work. Its not compattible witch each other. So I want to start so badley and it doesn’t work. Can you give me some tips how I can solve this?? Thank you so much for your help . Greetings Bregje
Hello Bregje, and thanks for watching! It sounds like you might need to update either iMovie or macOS. Ensure your MacBook is running the latest version of macOS Monterey and check for iMovie updates in the App Store. If it still doesn’t work, try restarting your devices and re-installing iMovie. I hope that helps :-)
Omg , you nailed it. I don't do well with talking at the camera. I have made over 20 videos now. Nobody cares or comments on my first videos. Analytics suck. I don't want to look anymore. Editing is overly time consuming for no return on investment.
Having the Right Software to go with the Concepts you want to present is By FAR the biggest Challenge for some creative minds. But by Far the overall biggest issue is getting Lost in a Ocean of endless Content which is already comprised to find the bigger channels. Then the BS of everyday those falsely claiming UA-cam is on EASY Mode Myths. Since clearly it is NOT.
I like you buddy. You are just a regular person like me. I get so tired of watching videos where everything is peefect. People are all glammed up and so fake. Real life is not like that. We all don't live in a great big fancy house. My prayer is that others feel as I do and just want to watch a genuine person.
Recently, the world got in my way. UA-cam was not a priority. Result is that a video has not gone up in a month. Doesn't mean I am quitting. It means I need to get things back on track.
My biggest challenge is keeping the videos small, tend to put a bit of footage that I don't want to "waste".... ;) and it can deviates a bit from the main message or become a bit repetitive...
I completely get that! you can always save other footage for B-Roll in future videos... but it really is important to keep the story flowing in your videos and that usually means cutting out a lot of good footage :-)
My hardest part is talking to the camera or thinking I hit record and it’s not on… I’m using my phone. I don’t mind that a lot because it gives me practice. I also need to make videos to get more female viewers because I’m getting more males than females 75/25. Overall I’m happy with my progress but I’m hoping to get better.
Absolutely! The key to getting views, in its simplest form, is have a thumbnail and title that attract the click... and then a video that fulfills the promise made by the title/thumbnail AND is engaging to watch :-)
Hey guys! I’m not native English speaker. But I started my channel a month ago in English). And I like it. It’s travel channel. Merry Christmas everyone 😎
What are your biggest challenges in UA-cam? Recording? Editing? Knowing what to say and staying on topic? Freezing on camera? I've struggled with all of these at various times and they're completely normal :-)
Hi Rob,
Could you do a video touching on how YT taxes work? I hear google takes them out, yet channels are considered self-employed.
Thanks-
Merry Christmas!
my biggest challenge is getting monetised at the moment despite getting nearly 4K subs within a couple of months
Freezing on camera. Editing & finding a niche?
Hi Rob- watched all the way. Thank you. I started in Oct and post everyday
Great you are sharing with us 🎉🎉🎉🎉 camera phobia is normal for everyone 🎉🎉🎉

Success is not always defined by money. Great content. I have quit 3x as well. But no more! Merry Christmas!
Best of luck to you!!
I've been that squirrel stuck in his den! 🐿️ Medically retired at 39 and going stir-crazy, but I just launched my own channel! 🎉 Starting to get out and about, thanks to all the inspiration and amazing walks!
Congratulations on getting started!! Best of luck with it and have fun! :-)
Rob rarely mentions that he offers an excellent video-editing course on his website, as well as a community you can join :)
Thanks Martha :) Merry Christmas!!
@@RobtheMaritimer Thanks for the insight - good idea to stick with what works!

That's great! Best of luck to you on continuing growing your channel! :-)
Thx for the tips Rob. Remind me of Ric Mercer when he was on TV. Enjoy the snow. Ours is melting in Calgary😊
Haha Rick Mercer is great :-)
Thank you for listing all your equipment and software you use. I wish more creators would do that.
My pleasure! Cheers :-)
Thanks for your inspiration. I started today
Awesome! You've got this!! :-)
@ thanks for writing back. I’m excited to get a following
Thanks Rob for keeping it real. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

I really enjoy your walking and talking videos the most because they feel more natural, like taking a walk with a friend. 👍
Glad you like them!
Your tips are correct about growing on UA-cam. Have a Merry Christmas.

Practice will absolutely help! Just practice with short videos less than 5 minutes first... watch it back and then do it again making adjustments with where to place the camera, etc. It'll come! Best of luck with it!!
Great job. I appreciate you addressing negative comments and being patient with growth.
Thanks for watching :-)
Hey - I started a couple weeks ago and have posted my 1st video. I’ve been following your content leading up to me doing it. Thank you!
Awesome! Good luck with it!
Great video Rob, glad I subscribed and get to hear your tips for us youtubers
Thank you for watching :-)
Rob, you are amazing ❤
The challenges you mentioned are right on target. Thank you for providing great content this year!🎄
Video editing is getting easier as I go. I needed to learn from scratch, and while not perfected, I'm so much faster than I started.
That's awesome! Congratulations on your progress and keep it going! All the best :-)
Great video love the snow on the trees! Merry Christmas 🎄
Thank you! You too!
Thanks for the snowy walk. It's 22°C at 17:20 here 😂
My pleasure! :)
Amazing advice! Thank you
You're so welcome!
That background is beautiful. I love it. Great video.
Thank you so much! :-)
My biggest struggle is spending so much time editing my step-by-step furniture makeovers, but I am getting better at it!
That does sound like it would be time consuming! The more you do it though the faster you'll likely get at it! Best of luck and have fun with it :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer thank you, Rob🙂
Great simple video. Im wanting to start my own chl as well & have had all of the same thoughts u addressed here. The more videos i watch like yrs the braver im becoming. Beautiful scenery! Looks like a white Christmas for u. Thanks for sharing & inspiring others.
First white Christmas for me in maybe 10 years! Best of luck to you and merry Christmas :-)
Oh my goodness! I have a fear of talking to the camera and then I pause and remember what I’m saying. I work a FT job and my husband doesn’t run the camera the way I would if I were on the job with him. We get it done but it’s moving slower than I would like. Thanks for the insight!!!
The struggle is real for a lot of people! Thanks for watching and best of luck with your channel :-)
Hello Rob, my goodness I would love to be as big as you. 💕NonnaGrace 🐓
Thanks for watching :)
I always appreciate your advice!❤
Thank you! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! :-)
@RobtheMaritimer My pleasure! Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year to you!😃
Thanks for this video. 🎉
Best of luck with it and Merry Christmas to you too!
Solid video, thanks
My pleasure!
Sounds like a solid plan! Merry Christmas to you as well! :-)
There is some great advice here.
Thanks for watching :-)
Merry Christmas Rob!
Merry Christmas to you too!
I feel you on this lol. I made it this December and I am now making money to put right back into the channel, to only improve my videos
Good plan! Good luck with it!
I found out keeping it "Simple" in the beginning is easier then slowly add ideas as you go little by little ... 😊
Great tip!
great advice!
Thanks for watching :-)
Thanks again for some sound advice and inspiration to get on with this at 70. Now what to do next...🤔 - hahaha
That's up to you! Best of luck to you moving forward! :-)
just start, merry Xmas❤
Merry Christmas to you too!
6:04 - You got this.
Loved the video .. what are you using to hold your camera/ phone while you walk?
The camera I'm using is my iPhone 14 Pro Max and I have it on a small tripod. I made a video about how I do these here: ua-cam.com/video/laxfUFDftS8/v-deo.htmlsi=I57GRt_7Cm9YZzqz
Merry Christmas to you dear
Merry Christmas to you as well :-)
Oddly enough, you would think me as an autistic introvert would have a hard time talking to the camera, but, once I get talking on camera I ramble too flipping much so I have to create outlines for myself if I want to talk about a specific subject.
Best of luck to you!
Inspiring video. What camera are you using?
In this video I used my iPhone 14 Pro Max in regular video mode, 4k 30 fps.
Got 1k miss 2k hour. Learned so much toward monetisation ❤
Best of luck!
Hi Rob Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas to you too :-)
Having the Right Software to go with the Concepts you want to present is By FAR the biggest Challenge for some creative minds. But by Far the overall biggest issue is getting Lost in a Ocean of endless Content which is already comprised to find the bigger channels. Then the BS of everyday those falsely claiming UA-cam is on EASY Mode Myths. Since clearly it is NOT.
I agree with this... there comes a time when you have to make the switch from "content consumer" to "content creator". Best of luck with it!
I find having ideas is the hardest part. 💕NonnaGrace 🐓
That certainly can be challenging!
I like you buddy. You are just a regular person like me. I get so tired of watching videos where everything is peefect. People are all glammed up and so fake. Real life is not like that. We all don't live in a great big fancy house. My prayer is that others feel as I do and just want to watch a genuine person.
I think a lot of people are starting to prefer real people just being authentic :-)
Recently, the world got in my way. UA-cam was not a priority. Result is that a video has not gone up in a month.
Doesn't mean I am quitting. It means I need to get things back on track.
Sounds like you know what you have to do! Best of luck with it :-)
My biggest challenge is keeping the videos small, tend to put a bit of footage that I don't want to "waste".... ;) and it can deviates a bit from the main message or become a bit repetitive...
You've got this! Keep practicing and you'll get better and better! Best of luck to you :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer Thanks Rob! I hope you and your family have a beautiful day!
Getting views is one for sure!
Absolutely! The key to getting views, in its simplest form, is have a thumbnail and title that attract the click... and then a video that fulfills the promise made by the title/thumbnail AND is engaging to watch :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer t/y!
Hey guys! I’m not native English speaker. But I started my channel a month ago in English). And I like it. It’s travel channel. Merry Christmas everyone 😎
Merry Christmas to you and good luck!
