Getting monetised is not the only way to make money from a UA-cam channel. I have sold clips of my content to Netflix, Sony / Viacom, BBC, RAI (Italy) Scott Free Productions (Ridley Scott) and more. My channel is not monetised, due to copyright claims on some items, but the sale of the clips, which did not have copyright claims, has been lucrative 😉
Great Video Roberto. You’re absolutely right about when it comes to time, volume, & consistency. I took your advice and took the overdrive and eating nothing but ramen route. No life. No dates. No vacations. No fun. Battled mental health and depression because of what I was doing was absolutely insane. But im on a mission. Like Dave Ramsey says, “Live Like No One Else, So You Can Live Like No One Else.” I made the ultimate sacrifice and dedicated an entire year to nothing but UA-cam. I Just focused on the goal of succeeding on UA-cam. I’ve been going live for 284 consecutive days. That’s well over 9 months in a row. Every single day. Same time. Holidays. Doesn’t matter. Reliability matters. I was able to get monetized again, hit 100k subs, & find my specific niche. I’ve uploaded 1.3k videos in 9 months. I was able to accomplish 5 years of work in less than a year. It was hard. It was demanding. Let’s be honest, it was absolutely insane. But I did it. So it is possible. Don’t give up. The grind don’t stop! 💪🏾

My channel and my views grew very quickly, because I believe I was one of the very few women offering quality beauty content, for all women... Over the years, I changed my niche to DIY decor creation, that grew my channel to over 100,000 subs. I never treated my channel like a hobby.... I appreciate you, Happy New Year.

You are probably one of the most grounded UA-cam educators I know offering a super-high dose of reality. I never heard of "working-class creator" or "middle class creator" mentioned before. But it is absolutely true. As a Gen-X'er, I filter out "advice" that lack mature or reality-based context. For older more mature creators who actually have a full life, career, and family, what you are sharing is dead on. And your book "Create Something Awesome" is well grounded as well.
Thank you. That was my goal. And I agree with you on the maturity. The market is so dominated by the young and their meme based lexicon that it’s hard to navigate and understand for an actual adult who has more on their plate. I wanted to figure out a way to communicate and reach people that is realistic and based on what will be reflected in their actual life.

I have to tell you we finally figured out what system works best for our recipe channel and it took off and blew away Living On A Dime....we are talking 8 TIMES more revenue!!!!!! We only had 30K subs when we started and LOAD has 300K. You don't need a huge channel to make good money! Thank you SOOO MUCH for your advice!!!

Been at this for close to 4 years. 14 away from 1000. I made a point to up the quality of my videos and gained about 500 subs this year. Really learning about giving value to viewers and not just doing the same thing as everyone else.

Thanks. 🙏🏾 I think that part of what makes me different is the fact that I think of it from a practical and first principles perspective . Rather than coming at it like and artist (my original background) I come at it with the first principles thinking of a designer and photographer. We can’t just focus on the creative and expressive parts. We have to consider how what we convey is perceived by others and what are fit in the market is, in addition to our unique style. But we also have to master the technical aspects and logistics. There is a physicality to it and energy matters as much as time. If not more so. And then there are limitations of time and capacity. I got into gear because I wanted to eliminate friction and save time while improving results.
Subscribers, in my opinion, do matter if you want to work with brands. When I had 50k subs nobody would work with me. As soon as I passed 150k subs my email started getting flooded with requests. I now work with tons of brands and affiliate companies all around the USA. I can't keep up with all the work as there are products being delivered to my house 3-4 days out of each week. At this point I need to hire a team. Keep uploading and be consistent. It WILL grow your channel if you do.
I’ve been on since 2007. The best part then was being able to talk to people directly which no longer exists. You can respond by video but no longer name the person it’s directed towards. I miss all that. People were polite back then. I guess that’s what made me small. iMovie is now harder to use. I much prefer to make playlists of my favorite subjects.
Long time supporter of the channel. Everything said is 💯 true. You better have grit and be ready for the long haul. Stepped away and now rebranding for alignment purposes.

Very transparent like always and a Very Happy New Year 🙂 I believe the main thing these days people are after get rich quick not focusing on developing skills and learning the tools so they apply in their UA-cam journey. Also, like Sean from Think Media says "UA-cam is a marathon, not sprint". My New Year resolution is to try to be more consistent with my main channel (at least once a week) as my goal is to get some brand deals. I have also started a gaming channel as I still enjoy playing game. Only difference between my let's play and the usual is that I use some humorous editing and give a short intro in the beginning and keep them short and sweet for my viewers. Take it easy mate and have a good one.

I always watch your videos because you speak the truth, the most eye opening, realistic views about succeeding on youtube, put me right back into reality. Unfortunately, youtube only shows us videos with over 100k views which makes most of us feel inferior and like a failure after putting so much hard work into the filming and editing.

15,000+ combined subs. It’s taken me years to get to this point but both channel are fully monetized. Much of this growth has happened in the last year, as I’ve buckled down and focused on what has made me successful in the first place.
Really good advice, I think everyone appreciates the realness of it. I was a working class creator and when I got to the point of being able to go fulltime, I realized I had hit my burnout point and my interests had changed, which was pretty defeating.
Great stuff as always Roberto. My piano channel now has 20,000 subscribers strong and I'm starting to see a bit of business come in and that's after six years!

A lot of this resonated with me. I can only film on my off days due to the nature of filming car content. I edit before work and after work though (5:30am - 7am and 6:30pm - 10pm most days). My focus has been to *learn* how to create high quality, high barrier to entry content... Now I'm there, I'm learning how to do it faster and more efficiently... And I'm starting to see the results. Still a long way to go, but I am starting to see the signals to drive me to double down now.
Great video. I spent 8 years of UA-cam before my channel gained traction at all. I was consistent and determined to make content. 16 years after I started I now have 157,000 subscribers. You just gotta cowboy up and do it.

That is actually my struggle right now. Trying to find that audience that would feel the same way with the niche that I'm passionate about. I don't care much for these so called Guru advisers. However, Roberto resonated with me. I hit almost 6000 subs in under 5 weeks.. and I do believe it was because I was true to my drivers, which was, at 57, to relive and reinvent my creative juice that dominated all my 20s... my music, my designs, animation and career skills; you are not dead in your 50s... you have life experience and a whole world of people who can resonate with your content, so start, do what you love!! I literally cancelled xmas, created content every day for 2 weeks... and here I am entering 2025 with the channel/Vlog I was dreaming of !!! Dive In!!! Share ... focus.. allocate your time and grow your channel.
I believe the middle class if the Creator Economy is built on people like you, who are older than 30 and have lived something worth talking about. The key is packaging it in a way that is relatable. I think a difference between myself and others may be both the fact I had a professional creative services background, and a technical background. Those things give me an appreciation for communicating effectively but also tangible details that matter. Maybe that is part of what resonates with you?

I just started and I am not stopping this time. I know I will only get better if I keep going. As a small channel, I appreciate every single view and subscriber I get. It's both exciting and frustrating at the same time.
Excellent video. I started a channel two years ago. Hit the subscriber and viewing hours threshold to be monetized after three months. I now have over 14k subscribers, but still have much to learn. It’s a long play, always trying to improve in small steps.
I started my channel a few days ago and with only two videos I got almost 400 new subscribers over 30k view and 2.4k hours of public views and I am 53!
Hang in there and consider working aggressively hard on the thumbnails. Find thumbnails that people are giving views around the same idea and try to make a better thumbnail than that
Appreciate you. It’s really where my focus is right now and helping more people break through to the Creator Middle Class and beyond. It’s also why I wrote my book and where the focus of the second book I’m writing is going this year.

Many are failing because they come focusing on money and don’t enjoy doing the content. I enjoy making content and it paid off also being consistent. I have 1 video on 100k som over 50k and make some money now. On my way to 20k and only had 2k last June. So people quit so quickly and sometimes have no value on their content.

Thanks Roberto, I've followed your advice over the years and found it very helpful. Back in 2008 when I was a working, 51 year old UA-camr, the competition was low then. My channel and my views grew very quickly, because I believe I was one of the very few women offering quality beauty content, for all women... Over the years, I changed my niche to DIY decor creation, that grew my channel to over 100,000 subs. I never treated my channel like a hobby.... I appreciate you, Happy New Year.

You are probably one of the most grounded UA-cam educators I know offering a super-high dose of reality. I never heard of "working-class creator" or "middle class creator" mentioned before. But it is absolutely true. As a Gen-X'er, I filter out "advice" that lack mature or reality-based context. For older more mature creators who actually have a full life, career, and family, what you are sharing is dead on. And your book "Create Something Awesome" is well grounded as well.
Thank you. That was my goal. And I agree with you on the maturity. The market is so dominated by the young and their meme based lexicon that it’s hard to navigate and understand for an actual adult who has more on their plate.
I wanted to figure out a way to communicate and reach people that is realistic and based on what will be reflected in their actual life.

Oh man! Can't believe I missed this! I have to tell you we finally figured out what system works best for our recipe channel and it took off and blew away Living On A Dime....we are talking 8 TIMES more revenue!!!!!! We only had 30K subs when we started and LOAD has 300K. You don't need a huge channel to make good money! Thank you SOOO MUCH for your advice!!!

I’m hoping to hit that 10k mark in Q1 of this year. I went from 550 subs to 4.3 subs in Q4 of last year. Listen to Roberto guys. I haven’t followed everything he said but he was the catalyst to my growth on UA-cam. Focus on high value videos like he said.
@AdAstra827 i started years ago. This wasn't the first time i was monetized. I was monetized when i was like 15 or 16 but then i struggled with UA-cam for like 14 years lol. I'm wondering why are you asking that question?
Analyze the 80/20 rule and find the top 20% of what got you subscribers and then prioritize making 80% of future content based on that.

Been at this for close to 4 years. 14 away from 1000. I made a point to up the quality of my videos and gained about 500 subs this year. Really learning about giving value to viewers and not just doing the same thing as everyone else.

Rather than coming at it like and artist (my original background) I come at it with the first principles thinking of a designer and photographer.
We can’t just focus on the creative and expressive parts.
We have to consider how what we convey is perceived by others and what are fit in the market is, in addition to our unique style.
But we also have to master the technical aspects and logistics. There is a physicality to it and energy matters as much as time. If not more so.
And then there are limitations of time and capacity.
I got into gear because I wanted to eliminate friction and save time while improving results.

Subscribers, in my opinion, do matter if you want to work with brands. When I had 50k subs nobody would work with me. As soon as I passed 150k subs my email started getting flooded with requests. I now work with tons of brands and affiliate companies all around the USA. I can't keep up with all the work as there are products being delivered to my house 3-4 days out of each week. At this point I need to hire a team. Keep uploading and be consistent. It WILL grow your channel if you do.

I’ve been on since 2007. The best part then was being able to talk to people directly which no longer exists. You can respond by video but no longer name the person it’s directed towards. I miss all that. People were polite back then. I guess that’s what made me small. iMovie is now harder to use. I much prefer to make playlists of my favorite subjects.

I believe the main thing these days people are after get rich quick not focusing on developing skills and learning the tools so they apply in their UA-cam journey. Also, like Sean from Think Media says "UA-cam is a marathon, not sprint". My New Year resolution is to try to be more consistent with my main channel (at least once a week) as my goal is to get some brand deals. I have also started a gaming channel as I still enjoy playing game. Only difference between my let's play and the usual is that I use some humorous editing and give a short intro in the beginning and keep them short and sweet for my viewers. Take it easy mate and have a good one.

I always watch your videos because you speak the truth, the most eye opening, realistic views about succeeding on youtube, put me right back into reality. Unfortunately, youtube only shows us videos with over 100k views which makes most of us feel inferior and like a failure after putting so much hard work into the filming and editing.

15,000+ combined subs. It’s taken me years to get to this point but both channel are fully monetized. Much of this growth has happened in the last year, as I’ve buckled down and focused on what has made me successful in the first place.
The 80/20 rule is real and focusing on what is working is the key
Really good advice, I think everyone appreciates the realness of it. I was a working class creator and when I got to the point of being able to go fulltime, I realized I had hit my burnout point and my interests had changed, which was pretty defeating.

A lot of this resonated with me. I can only film on my off days due to the nature of filming car content. I edit before work and after work though (5:30am - 7am and 6:30pm - 10pm most days). My focus has been to *learn* how to create high quality, high barrier to entry content... Now I'm there, I'm learning how to do it faster and more efficiently... And I'm starting to see the results. Still a long way to go, but I am starting to see the signals to drive me to double down now.
Makes perfect sense. Editing faster and more efficiently is a big part of this and will make it realistic.
Great video. I spent 8 years of UA-cam before my channel gained traction at all. I was consistent and determined to make content. 16 years after I started I now have 157,000 subscribers. You just gotta cowboy up and do it.

That is actually my struggle right now. Trying to find that audience that would feel the same way with the niche that I'm passionate about. I don't care much for these so called Guru advisers. However, Roberto resonated with me. I hit almost 6000 subs in under 5 weeks.. and I do believe it was because I was true to my drivers, which was, at 57, to relive and reinvent my creative juice that dominated all my 20s... my music, my designs, animation and career skills; you are not dead in your 50s... you have life experience and a whole world of people who can resonate with your content, so start, do what you love!! I literally cancelled xmas, created content every day for 2 weeks... and here I am entering 2025 with the channel/Vlog I was dreaming of !!! Dive In!!! Share ... focus.. allocate your time and grow your channel.
I believe the middle class if the Creator Economy is built on people like you, who are older than 30 and have lived something worth talking about.
The key is packaging it in a way that is relatable.
I think a difference between myself and others may be both the fact I had a professional creative services background, and a technical background.
Those things give me an appreciation for communicating effectively but also tangible details that matter.
Maybe that is part of what resonates with you?

It's a tough time for youtubers these days. Even the established channels are having issues with low views, lack of new subs and losing subs. Being new to the game is that much harder, and not everyone wants to be a cookie cutter, AI channel, or all yapping about the same crap. Good luck everyone!

I just started and I am not stopping this time. I know I will only get better if I keep going. As a small channel, I appreciate every single view and subscriber I get. It's both exciting and frustrating at the same time.

Focus on packaging and positioning
Excellent video. I started a channel two years ago. Hit the subscriber and viewing hours threshold to be monetized after three months. I now have over 14k subscribers, but still have much to learn. It’s a long play, always trying to improve in small steps.

I started my channel a few days ago and with only two videos I got almost 400 new subscribers over 30k view and 2.4k hours of public views and I am 53!

Hang in there and consider working aggressively hard on the thumbnails.
Find thumbnails that people are giving views around the same idea and try to make a better thumbnail than that

Many are failing because they come focusing on money and don’t enjoy doing the content.
I enjoy making content and it paid off also being consistent. I have 1 video on 100k som over 50k and make some money now. On my way to 20k and only had 2k last June.
So people quit so quickly and sometimes have no value on their content.
It just depends on people’s priorities and what they value more and what they value most.
