There was a war in 648 CE that lasted 3 days.
What happened was that the King of Maghda sent a diplomatic envoy with tribute to Tang China. And in return, Wang Xuance was sent with lavish gifts carried by the 30 men envoy to return the favour. However, before Wang reach the Maghda King, the King had died and the throne seized by the pretender who then went on the seized the gifts.
Wang escaped to Tibet and then returned with Tibetan infantry and Nepali cavalry to punish the affront. It was a quick and decisive war that lasted three days. And the pretender was duly dealt with.

Chinese civilisation and thoughts are very much indebted by the transmission of Mahayana Buddhism from India since the 1st century. Indian Buddhist scholar monks were well sought by the Chinese emperors to transmit their wisdom in order to strengthen their empires. Now China preserved many of the translated scriptures that the original Sanskrit version were already lost.

At the same time the British did tried to create an independent Tibet so as to defence theirs interest. Today you can see that part of history in Mongolia education in which Russian is taught as their second language and Mongolia script no longer using the traditional as theirs counter part in China.

    Book he mentioned.
The British invasion of Tibet in 1904 is one of the strangest events in British imperial history. Planned by Lord Curzon as a strategic move in the Great Game, the incursion was in fact ill-conceived and inspired by only the weakest of motivations. Led by the soldier, explorer, and mystic Francis Younghusband, the mission-doomed from the very beginning-became caught in political cross-fire and the distant and destructive machinations of China and England and ended in ignominy and disappointment. Peter Fleming's Bayonets to Lhasa is a gripping depiction of this unusual chain of events, its charismatic protagonists, and the repercussions that continue to be felt throughout the region.

border issue could simply be solved if China just hand over Aksai chin to India back which they capture illegally in 1962 and then china and India should sign treaty to pull their armies back and no one will intervene in others territory and then also India will offically recognise tibet as part of china and china will consider Arunachal as part of India and will never claim it again and thus all our problems will be gone.If china gives up its expansionist behaviour and give back terretories illegally claimed then china would be uplifted in everyone s eyes and could become real superpower.Just china had to give up some greeds and It will be at its best even from west.

I don't know if he knows Classical Chinese or read any of those Chinese historical documents and records in Classical Chinese texts because all official records of China was written in Classical Chinese before early 20th century. So, if you are a serious, good Chinese history scholar, you should read Chinese records and documents in classical Chinese texts for primary source. So, I don't know if Wang Gungwu is a Chinese history student of British system or a Chinese history scholar. There's a difference. Not many people can read classical Chinese well because it's different from today's vernacular Chinese. Same texts, but different meaning.

India, Tibet and China didn’t have this trouble only until the meddling Brit’s came in and meddled in the affairs, worrying about Russia who never even was a threat to India.

Real issue is if India tries to give the land that China wants in east, china which is now Communist sees it like a weakness and extends 😸 its claim based on historical map that we were here first. And India is no push over. India thinks that if i give them the land, china isn't a democracy that we will ever know that Chinese people actually thanked India and want peace with us or they see us weak and worth attacking. There is no free media in China for that. There is a reason why democracies are better at resolving disputes. They have free media. Even the next party can understand the atmosphere inside the nation and what should be done.
This is the Heart within heart of the problem. China is feeling the surge of power and it is getting mad in it. Border dispute will be resolved, but once China Comes to the conclusion that India can't be taken out with a Infinity stone gauntlet.

This professor is really brilliant -- summarized what many haven't managed to do without taking a political stance. I would only add that India's influence began to wane soon after the Islamic conquests of Delhi and north western India (present day Pakistan). The Delhi Sultanate did influence parts of China (i.e. Xinjiang), but did not influence the dominant Han thinking. I would also add that although India was involved with the Opium trade (the Parsis being crucial here), somehow there is no misgivings about this particular blight among the Chinese regarding this particular episode. Goes to say that a lot of actual grievances are not talked about strongly but are driven by politics, and sometimes the truth can be hidden away.

It's about the present vs the past. The present always takes precedence and determines how the past is used. China does not have its sights on India because it is focused on its own development and the confrontation with the US-led West which threatens its development. Chinese nationalism largely ignores India. And anyway, Indian participation in the opium trade was conducted by merchants under the aegis of Western powers intruding upon China. It was not sponsored by the nation state that is India today and the opium problem was solved long ago by Mao.

The comments here show just how uninformed people are about the issue of India-China relations. To make things clear I put together a timeline of how events transpired in the last century evolved to today's situation.
1912: In the first full year of the Republic of China after the fall of the Qing dynasty, the United States National Geographic Magazine dedicated an issue to China. Accompanying the issue is a large and detailed fold-out map of China. The map clearly shows that Dirang Dzong (德讓宗) and Tawang (達旺) are within the boundary of China.
1943: British India likely calculated that dealing with the Lhasa government was easier than with the Republic of China's Nationalist Government in extracting land concessions and proposed to the United States to recognize Tibet's right to exchange diplomatic representatives with other powers. The Americans rejected this proposal:
"The Government of the United States has borne in mind the fact that the Chinese Government has long claimed suzerainty over Tibet and that the Chinese constitution lists Tibet among areas constituting the territory of the Republic of China. This Government has at no time raised a question regarding either of those claims."
1944: British India annexed Dirang Dzong (德讓宗), a Tibetan-settled area. Dzong means fort in Tibetan. The Chinese Government (the Nationalist Government of the Republic of China, seated in Kunming at the time because of World War II) protested to the British. So did the Tibetan Lhasa government.
1945: British India intruded into the tribal area of South Tibet.
February 1947: The Chinese Nationalist Government lodged a complaint with the Indian mission, which was by then newly established in China, on British India's border intrusions into Chinese territory.
August 1947: Britain left South Asia, and India was created as the successor polity to the departed British. India's creation means that a country that historically did not exist suddenly appears on China's doorstep.
October 1947: The Tibetan Lhasa Government dispatched a formal request to New Delhi, asking the newly independent Indian Government to withdraw all its predecessors' intrusions into the territory between the McMahon Line and the traditional border beneath the foothills and return a wide swath of territory from Ladakh to Assam, including Sikkim and the Darjeeling district.
1949: When the defeat of the Nationalist Government's in the Chinese civil war was imminent, the Republic of China's ambassador in New Delhi reminded the Indian Government that China did not recognize the McMahon Line and held the Simla Convention invalid.
October 1949: The CCP (Chinese Communist Party) took control of the mainland, and its civil war rival, the Republic of China, retreated to Taiwan.
December 1949: India recognized the People's Republic of China as the legitimate government, effectively cutting off the diplomatic channel the Republic of China used to deliver its protests to India.
February 1951: India annexed Tawang (達旺), the birthplace of the Sixth Dalai Lama and home to the four-hundred-year-old Tawang Monastery. The Tibetan authorities in Lhasa protested but were simply informed by the Indian political officer that India was taking over Tawang. The Tibetans protested again, accusing the Indian Government of 'seizing as its own what did not belong to it.' The Tibetans went on to ask New Delhi to withdraw its forces from Tawang immediately. The protests were ignored. The Republic of China (which had already retreated to Taiwan by then and had no diplomatic relation with India) also vehemently denounced India's territorial travesty. Curiously the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) made no noise.
1954: India published a new map showing South Tibet as part of India. The map also shows the two countries, Sikkim and Bhutan, as part of India.
January 1959: The CCP (Chinese Communist Party) commented for the first time on the issue of South Tibet when Zhou Enlai, in a letter to Nehru, offered to concede South Tibet to India. However, India rejected the offer, as it also sought control over Aksai Chin.
1960: India started establishing posts (border markers) north of South Tibet (north of the McMahon Line) and proclaiming that it has the right to unilaterally 'improve' the McMahon Line as it sees fit.
October 1962: After years of warning, China attacked India's position in South Tibet and recovered Tawang shortly. Three weeks later, in a second wave, China recovered the whole of South Tibet.
November 1962: China unilaterally withdrew back to the north of the McMahon line.
    1975: India annexed Sikkim.
1987: India made South Tibet a state and renamed it the so-called Arunachal Pradesh. The Republic of China (Taiwan) put out a statement denouncing India. Here is the statement:
"In regard to the issue of the Indian government's illegal occupation of our country's territory and the establishment of the so-called 'Arunachal Pradesh,' the foreign ministry of the Republic of China issued the following announcement at midnight: India's illegal occupation of our country's territory has been repeatedly stated by the Government of the Republic of China as something it will not recognize. Recently, the Indian Congress unilaterally passed the establishment of 'Arunachal Pradesh' to the south of the so-called McMahon Line. The Indian Government also made it a state. The Government of the Republic of China once again solemnly proclaims that the Government of India intends to legitimize its illegal occupation of Chinese territory. The Government of the Republic of China regards this as illegal, void, and absolutely not recognized."
2008: A little over a decade after Britain returned Hong Kong to China, Britain finally had no stake in Tibet and could afford to be honest for once. The British government made a statement recognizing China's sovereignty over Tibet (previously recognized as suzerainty, not sovereignty). The statement, supported by both the Conservative and Labour parties, is remarkable for its honesty in admitting that Britain once had territorial ambitions in Tibet, and it adopts an almost apologetic tone. Here is an excerpt:
"...But our position is unusual for one reason of history that has been imported into the present: the anachronism of our formal position on whether Tibet is part of China, and whether in fact we harbour continued designs to see the break-up of China. We do not.
Our ability to get our points across has sometimes been clouded by the position the UK took at the start of the 20th century on the status of Tibet, a position based on the geopolitics of the time. Our recognition of China’s “special position” in Tibet developed from the outdated concept of suzerainty. Some have used this to cast doubt on the aims we are pursuing and to claim that we are denying Chinese sovereignty over a large part of its own territory. We have made clear to the Chinese Government, and publicly, that we do not support Tibetan independence. Like every other EU member state, and the United States, we regard Tibet as part of the People’s Republic of China. "
2014: A Tibetan Chinese named Nido Tania from Arunachal Pradesh (occupied South Tibet) went to old Delhi and was beaten to death because he 'looked Chinese.'
2024: The festering border dispute between India and China persists with no sign of India relinquishing its stolen land.

The fact is the Macmohan line was breached recently and Chinese entered the Indian side, they miscalculated and never expected such a strong Indian response.
They want the strategic part of Tawang so they can control the entire water supply to India, in their past meetings they had even proposed to give aksai chin back to India if India gave them Tawang.
Luckily we have a strong prime minister and they are surprised that inspite of having a much more powerful military, we have an advantage on many fronts. The stand off will only be over once the Chinese agree to go back to their previous positions. The Indian foreign minister has made it clear that relations will not be normal till then

without Indian servitude to the empire, the Brit could not inflict huge suffering to China in the Opium War. Also in September 1945, Gen. Douglas Gracey led 20,000 troops of the 20th Indian Division occupied Saigon then gave Vietnam back to French colonialists. While the statues of Slave Masters were knocked down in the US, the statue of queen Vitoria is still beheld in India. It's ok. that's the national choice.
However India teams up with the US & Australia to contain China, the matter now is international.
With this history, it's tough for India demand respect from Asia, especially China.

To perpetuate Western imperialism through "Divide and Conquer" foreign policies means the US and UK in particular, will want to create conflicts between India and China. The British Empire once planted seeds of discord in colonies and will also want other ex- colonies and many countries to fight against one another too. It's good for US military hegemony globally and boost Western lucrative military businesses.

British didn't impose on newly independent states, they were free to decide their new borders. Burma and Pakistan realigned it with China, only India insisted on claiming British imperial line, even areas where Brits never controlled. It's entirely India's own decision.
