George Yeo fully understands that the Han Chinese despised the ruling Manchus. The Manchus routinely humiliated the Chinese. This led to an inferiority complex that led to opium and reluctant to fight the foreigners for the Manchu emperor. In fact the Chinese people welcome the foreigners because they believe they would get help to overthrow the hated Manchus. The century of humiliation was for the Manchus and not the Han Chinese

@Majulah Cecapura Corruption, overpopulation and huge draining of govt revenue due to the three wars in the late Qianlong era has already weaken the empire. Seeds already been sold.
After that the relative peace has further degrade the Manchu warriors who used to be the core of the empire's military force. A sword not used for too long got rotten. And the bureaucracy been infested with widespread corruption.
And the Opium war was just almost 80-100 years after the Qianlong period. Suffice to say that China already in decline after the Qianlong period.
Caste system?there maybe a bit in early Qing period but most of the time the most respected/trusted officials by the Qing emperors were the Han Chinese but not the Manchu, all people of different ethnicities work together. There was never a caste system such as those in India.
And on the other hand, the most extreme hardcore reactionary and anti westernization or anti reform officials, some of them were the Manchu officials not the Han Chinese.
If the govt was strong and society relatively free of problems, there won't be the Taiping rebellion, which shocked the empire to the core and need to rely on provincial military forces.
Qing period China is a hybrid of multi ethnicities coexistence and that kept the Qing empire strong for a relatively long period of time over a vast landscape.
Read and study more, one needs to read history in a bit more details, not just claiming ' China has the biggest bureaucracy in the world also the strongest centralized governance' and take it as face value.
You are the one who just got things wrong from the start as you didnt even get the basic facts right. Every student or scholar with a little knowledge of modern Chinese history will know all these facts
And you must be joking by saying the Qing empire was strong during the opium war and afterwards. The Qing was defeated by ard 20,000 foreign forces mainly westen armies, and needed to leave Beijing.
So much about 'strong centralized governance'. Then what? Defeated by a 20000 people army and need to run away?
Its the same as saying that Iraq has a strong government yet it has been defeated one sided by the US army, in a very very short period of time.
You should go back to school if you wish to learn more.

Divide and interfere (external interested party taking side leading to corruption, bribery, arms conflict and civil war; one party declared illegal, illegitimate or being labeled terrorist). You see this taking place in Africa and South America.
The Colonialist aggressors who had caused destruction and suffering are now feeling the heat, offering insincere apologies. This is only when they felt lost out when China decided to help these nations with economic aid and development and could see the tangible result.

I can't see any tangible result. The corruption continues, even gets worse. The CCP have no problems dealing with corrupt dictators, so the people in general suffer. Look at the breakdown of South Africa, for instance. The examples you say to look at- Africa and South America- are hopeless cases which never seem to get better. Socialism, socialistic and communistic leaning governments are ruining these places, and CCP support is keeping corrupt rulers in position. This will not age well.

When there’s more than one power, like The 7 Warring States, Han vs Chu, The Three Kingdoms, KMT vs CPC, it was in chaos. China and Singapore found success having a single party. KangXi was the greatest Qing Dynasty Emperor. His grandson QiangLong careless attitude - his love of just enjoying life and apple polishers led to a blind eye over corruption among his officials and holding on power behind the scene for some 20 plus years even though he abdicated & place his son on the throne. This led to internal strive & weaken good governance. Later on Empress Dowager love to hang on to power for her own selfish ego and purposely place kids as Emperors. So there’s no real nation building and it declined. When the Westerners took advantage, initially things are settled with money to pay off. When the Royal coffers are being depleted, they start giving up land, so Hong Kong & Macau were hived off for respective 100 years. So sad. Corruption will weaken anyone, any government and any nation. Bribe takers will undermine justice and morals. This in turn will lead to civil tensions and tear a country apart. Which is why our founding PM Mr Lee Kuan Yew makes it very clear that corruption will not be tolerated. This wisdom is also endowed in President Xi JinPin to stamp out corruption & alleviate poverty.

The decline of Chinese dynasties was that the lack of strong emperors who demanded obedience and the country was strong but it is a cycle which keeps repeating in china where dynasties were lost when strong emperors died and young emperors took over.
As for the Qing , their heyday was during the period where Kang Xi and Qian Long were alive , Japan and Korea were also feudal states.

Mr. Yeo is looking at an elephant through a microscope. That may give you excellent detail about the elephant, but it does not help you understand what an elephant is or what it does. For the same reason, we do not need a 200 volume history of the Qing Dynasty to understand the Century of Humiliation, which is extremely important history for understanding China. There are a number of good books in one volume that cover this important period of Chinese history.
The roots of the Century of Humiliation are indeed varied and complex, but they can be boiled down to a few important points: internal social rot, hubris, and failure to modernize and industrialize. When trying to understand complex things, it is best to begin examining using the eyes, not the microscope.

In China's long history spanning over 50 centuries, its century of humiliation is a more recent memory.
This memory is selectively interpreted in ways to nurture its national identity, patriotic fervour and comprehensive national power.
For example, its national anthem was composed and reflects an era when China was invaded and partially occupied by Japan.
This deep sense of shame, loss of face and respect that accompanies the humiliation, is now manifested in assertive behaviour that demands respect from the rest of the world.
The effects of that century still reverberates in contemporary international relations,
when China's civilian and military leaders and diplomats, meet their counterparts, especially behind closed doors.

George Yeo is right that the decline of China started way before the end of the 19th Century. The prosperity during the reign of Emperor Qian Long was merely outward as the dynasty was already rotten to its core. Nevertheless, the well known corruption during the reign of Emperor Qian Long was merely the symptom of China's stagnation and backwardness and not its cause. In my view, there are two very important factors that contributed to the stagnation and decline of China that have not been sufficiently discussed. The first important factor is the Confucianist school of thought known as the the Cheng & Zhu Rational School of Thoughts (程朱理学) and because the leading scholars propounded this school of thoughts were from the Song and Ming dynasties, it is also known as the Song & Ming Rational School of Thoughts (宋明理学). At the time when the minds of the Europeans were being freed by the Renaissance and the Protestant Reformation, enabling the Europeans to come out of the dark ages to enter into an age of enlightenment, the Chinese minds were being bound by the Rational School of Thoughts, causing them to insist on following strictly the rules and the precepts of their forebears. The result of stagnation and decline. The second factor is the nature of the Qing Dynasty. Being originally a nomadic tribe and minority ethnic group with just a few million people, it would be impossible for the Manchus to rule over China without the support of the Han Chinese. And with the Confucianist emphasis on the difference between the "Chinese" and the barbarians, how then could a Manchurian Dynasty be seen as legitimate? The only way must be for the Manchus to be seen not just as Chinese, but to be even more Chinese as the Han Chinese. Hence, the Manchu regimes embraced wholeheartedly confucianism and made it not just the ruling philosophy, but promoted it as the only way to advance in government career. With the overwhelming emphasis on the humanities subjects of Confucianism, an inevitable outcome is the neglect of science and technology. The result is a complete stagnation of science and technology during Qing Dynasty. In the early part of 20th Century, the leading intellectuals correctly saw the stifling and oppressive effects of the Confucianist school of thoughts and started a new cultural movement to overthrow the "man eating" culture of Confucianism. The real culprit, of course, was not the historical confucianism as originally propounded by Confucius but the Confucianism that had come to be developed in the course of history.

That doesn’t mean I am happy with everything happening at home. @@Wann-zo7rn2qn4i Qing dynasty
The first introduction of the concept of modern democracy into China is credited to exiled Chinese writer Liang Qichao. In 1895, he participated in protests in Beijing for increased popular participation during the late Qing dynasty, the last ruling dynasty of China. It was the first of its kind in modern Chinese history. After escaping to Japan following the government's clampdown on anti-Qing protesters, Liang Qichao translated and commented on the works of Hobbes, Rousseau, Locke, Hume, Bentham and many other western political philosophers. He published his essays in a series of journals that easily found an audience among Chinese intelligentsia hungering for an explanation of why China, once a formidable empire of its own, was now on the verge of being dismembered by foreign powers. In interpreting Western democracy through the prism of his strongly Confucian background, Liang shaped the ideas of democracy that would be used throughout the next century. Liang favored gradual reform to turn China into a constitutional monarchy with democracy. The goal of the Hundred Days' Reform was to reform China into such as system, but it was rapidly reversed in the Wuxu Coup.
Liang's great rival among progressive intellectuals was Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a republican revolutionary. Sun felt that democracy would be impossible as long as the Qing monarchy still existed. Democracy was part of his platform, the Three Principles of the People (三民主義) - the principle of the people under 1 nation (nationalism), the principle of the people's rights (democracy), and the principle of the people's livelihood and well-being (civility, decency and respect). Like Liang, Sun agreed that democracy, or at least universal suffrage, could not happen overnight in a country with high illiteracy rates and a lack of political consciousness. Sun's Three Stages of Revolution called for a period of "political tutelage" where people would be educated before elections can occur.
Responding to civil failures and discontent, the Qing Imperial Court responded by organizing elections. China's first modern elections were organized by Yuan Shikai for Tianjin's county council in 1907. In 1909, 21 of 22 provinces, with the exception being Xinjiang, held elections for provincial assemblies and municipal councils. Requirements were strict; only those that passed the imperial exams, worked in government or military, or owned 5000 yuan of property may vote or run for office. This essentially limited the electorate to the gentry class. Hundreds of thousands voted and the winners were overwhelmingly constitutional monarchists, followers of Liang Qichao. The provincial assemblies elected half of the 200 member national assembly, the other half was selected by regent Prince Chun. All of these assemblies became hotbeds of dissent against the Qing as they were protected by freedom of speech. In 1909, the Qing government held parliamentary elections.

The trade issue was primarily between Manchuria (not China) and Mercantilist Britain. Britain wanted to trade manufactured goods, The Manchu Emperor didn’t. The Manchus were quite arrogant too, wanting the greatest power on the planet to knee and pay vassal homage to the Middle Kingdom. The disgraceful Opium trade was fuelled by William Jardine and Mercantilists. The ethnic Chinese already had a penchant towards the Opium, Commissioner Lim tried to stop. For Britain, wanting to balance its trade, China was a long way away, but would use its technology to squash decent or protest against trade or damage to cargo.

GY's view of the Opium War is skewed. Either he was being disingenuous or treading on political correctness , the latter would reveal him as a spineless academic , whatever his fear or reservation.. Anyway, he was never an effective leader in gvt office or savvy politician , one whom LKY treated as collateral damage in his grand scheme of things, one that I m sure GY is clueless about.
It is clearly documented in Chinese history that the Opium Wars were wars waged unilaterally on the Qing for access to ports for the distribution of the Opium trade. HK, Macau were ceded for this purpose to facilitate the storage and smooth transit of Opium into the Chinese markets and heartland. But GY opined that it was the Chinese market for Opium that caused em that century of humiliation. The fact that the Brits bombed and invaded the Qing to force control & custody of those ports for Opium trade is indictment enough to contradict GY words alluding Opium humiliation to the Chinese markets. If you don't have supply , how is there gonna be consumption? And it was enforced supply at gun-point literally then by the Brits and later the 8 Nations Alliance. GY is a poor academic , and a confirmed weak politician. His reply to his host is political in nature, not reflecting the truth. Disappointed with him. No spine.

Look at the opioid crisis unfolding in America. I've watched the US political establishment blame China and Mexico for distributing the drugs, completely neglecting the role of Big Pharma and the despondence of its working class. GY was able to back his point sufficiently IMO. Life's the same, by the way.
As someone else shared - Sun Tzu said: The good fighters of old first put themselves beyond the possibility of defeat, and then waited for an opportunity of defeating the enemy. To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

@@pr0newbie Your line of thought sounds good.. and perfect - if only China like the Brits have enforced - by brutal means with guns and soldiers - the supply upon the weakness of the US consumers. But you know China doesn't, as you had mentioned that it was blamed for the supply. Blaming someone doesn't equate to the blamed one being guilty of an act as common sense dictates. The US is a powerful country with a great military and law enforcement aparatus. It is hilarious to suggest China has the capability in enforcing the opioid trade on the US. Unlike the Chinese upon whom Opium was enforced, and supplied by the victorious ships protected by cannons and the western military , the US consumers, in contrast, willingly seek out countries in peace times - whc may include China - to purchase the opioid drugs. There lies that little but darn flaw in your nice lines.

    • @pr0newbie
      @pr0newbie 2 роки тому +1

@The Oracle no one doubts the role Britain and imperialism played in this. But GY is right to say that the health of the Chinese back then was already weak, hence why China were so porous and slow to react to their own opioid crisis. We can choose to ascribe 100% blame to external forces, or on introspect learn from what made society so weak as to succumb to the opium trade for such a long time before things flared up. That is the point.
It has been thought provoking enough for me to consider if this is 1 major reason why Chinese policy makers today are so hawkish and strict on seemingly innocuous matters they deem negative to society - the gaming restrictions - for example.
Also, consider the US's slow and ineffectual reaction to their own current crisis. The Chinese will be inferring from their own past and reading this as a sign of major decay within the US empire.
