    4:51 quite impressive how much better the Apple Log graded image looks. Shadows are super clean for a phone in this situation. Results I would otherwise only get with MotionCam on Android which is very difficult to deal with.

  • @DigiDriftZone

    Fantastic video and Apple Log is certainly not a gimmick. The iPhone certainly can be used in a lot more situations now, but with that said, the utlrawide and tele lenses are pretty bad (13mm f/10 and 77mm f/24 or 120mm f/21 on the Max equivalents to FF). But even the primary camera is still only a 24mm f/6.3 FF equivalent which does limit you quite a lot with what you can use it for.
    Other than if I forgot my proper camera, I can't see a situation where I would prefer to use an iPhone over say an also very compact Sony ZV-E1 and a tiny f/2.8 prime.

    Great video ! I initially thought you were only going to compare FiLMiC Pro with the native iPhone app and was about to ask you to compare FiLMiC Pro with the Blackmagic app, but we can see here that the difference between the two like the actual log performance and disabling digital sharpening/noise reduction is very obvious. I was wondering if you could go even further to compare the two apps' features, especially quality/bitrate options, the ability to lock shutter speed while keeping ISO on auto for vlogging/varying lighting, the remote control with another phone feature etc... @MaximoJoshua 8 місяців тому

      @@DennisSchmitz they can't...i mean they could take some already processed image and just transform it for no reason, but the whole point of log is to encode the sensor data, Filmic can't do that, its just Rec.709 with a filter, from what I have seen. BRaw (if BM were to add that) would be the same thing.
      Only apple, in their camera firmware, could change the way that the sensor values are encoded. Apple doesn't provide any API's to get the raw sensor values, and the value of Log is in capturing more info. If I were to take a Rec.709 image, convert it to Log, and then convert it back again, I wouldn't really gain anything, because I only have as much data as I started with.

    Hey man thanks for the video. I have a couple of questions: What’s the best option for recording video on the 14pm? Does it come remotely close to picture quality you would get from 15pm after color grading? Or is it night and day difference in terms of final quality? I’d like to use the phone as my main camera for UA-cam shorts and want it to look good so trying to decide if my current 14pm can deliver a good result or if I just need to bite the bullet and get the 15pm. Thanks again!

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  9 місяців тому

      The 14PM can definitely deliver. You can shoot ProRes for heavy color grading using third-party apps like Blackmagic - or to shoot log use Cinema P3 or Filmic Pro. But really for YT Shorts just shooting standard ProRes will work great or even HEVC (using whatever app you prefer). But yeah, the 14PM is great - the main difference from a video perspective is the new Apple Log and then the 5x telephoto in the 15PM.

    I am planning to purchase your LUTs for apple log but I have 2 questions
    1- can i trust the auto exposure in the Blackmagic app coz i will be filming my self?
    2. Which setting i should go with to use Lumafusion
    1080p. H264 or h265 or proress 444?

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  9 місяців тому +2

      If you’re planning to shoot auto then I’d probably just use the native camera as it’s very accurate. Blackmagic is good, but it is a bit buggy right now, especially shooting Apple Log. The monitoring is currently messed up (looks overexposed) and recording to any codec other than ProRes the files don’t all look right.
      I’m sure/hope these bugs will be fixed soon, but the native app is good now. The main negative is the ProRes HQ files are huge. If you do use Blackmagic then I’d shoot standard ProRes or ProRes LT. Still get great results, but with much smaller file size. Then I typically use the same codec in Luma that you shoot with.

    Thats a super cool video :) The sharpness thing i think is just doable with a Iphone 15 Pro. I have the 13 Pro. I just found the CinemaP3 App. There is C-LOG and D-LOG. Are this LOGS a bit better compared to the Filmic LOG V3 and is it possible to "de-sharp" the clips in post? I also realized that my footage is rly overshapen on big TV :(

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  10 днів тому

      CinemaP3 is very similar to FiLMiC Pro and their log profiles, although I actually think FiLMiC Pro you can get a bit better results with LogV3+ (ProRes) since you have a 13 Pro. But again, they’re both a good option - and yes, you can soften the image in post. This video might help… ua-cam.com/video/2_FnRrtR80Q/v-deo.htmlsi=8NsvVlN-HsXBE5bK - also try using a 1/8 black Promist filter when shooting. Thanks for watching!

    I appreciate your channel. Very informative and inspirational. I have a question, when you’re filming, do you try to get the best exposure possible and then color correct & grade in post later on? Or do you allow over/under exposure and fix later?

    • @iphoneographers

    One important thing is that it's still variable frame rate (VFR) and not constant. This isn't a massive issue if you're just using the phone but if you're syncing multiple cameras or external audio, it can easily desync.

      Yeah, the colors are a little funky, especially when you see them side-by-side. This was not a scientific test, just more of a general look and with some finessing you can get good results either way, but nonetheless, the Apple log is far superior.

    Ironic how they need to introduce log to finally give you something that is not API-oversharpened. It's nice to have this, but I would prefer to have a setting which deactivates automatic sharpening for normal video recording. Or a simple setting like on older Sony cameras, contrast/saturation/sharpness -3 to +3. That would absolutely be enough for me.
