Absolutely. I am so pleased to read so many prefer Cristina most of all. I was sort of expecting the younger, more slim sopranos with the more 'delicate' voices to be most popular with many of today's audiences (not that any overly delicate voice could manage the aria at all).
Certainly my favourite.

Edda Moser, is giant! Perfect technic, and i like Diana Damrau for her dramatic histrionics. All them are very professional.
Edda is a close second to Cristina for me, but it is hard to rate one over the other out of the two of them. They are each that cut above the others - who are all very good to varying degrees for the role.
Cristina, I take my hat off for you. Yours was the finest tunned instrument and only you could play it. Now, it is gone with you. but thank you so much for the time that you shared it with us.

I don't know anything about lyrical technic but in my opinion these two were the worst ... especially deutekom. Ok it's hard but it doesn't sound great (For me at least). Maybe too much technic and not enough feeling of the music ?

My own favourite is Cristina. So clear and each note perfect without an ounce of strain. Also how intimidating it would be in real life to have such a mother. Cold and deliberate with no overacting at all. Chilling.
I never knew that so many wonderful ladies could sing this role so amazingly. I have heard so many bad ones in my life… the best acting is by far Damrau, omg, she really gets it. Her singing is flawless- imagine being so in control that you have so much room for this kind of acting!! But my favorites are Deutekom, Anderson and Popp. And … well whatever, all are incredible.
Deutekom is the best! She has mechanic and powerful voice 😍 Lucia has very control too, but ıt is a dramatic role

arya pujon :( Just happened upon this clip & was listening to the subtle variations in each performer's versions. I do not usually listening to nor know much about opera. But when it came to clarity & precision & quality I came to my own personal conclusion that I felt Christina Deutekom's version was superior to me; only to now find out she dies last month! :( What a very sad loss. Through her I heard the phrasing that Mozart intended
Jeroen Manders Deutekom did a lot of really neat "stuff." Always a joy to hear. Her Mozart always breathtaking. Her "special" coloratura cleared a lot of passages up so to speak, her critics notwithstanding.

She is the worst queen of the night. She doesn't have the voice for that character, cruel and powerful. She has technical. Dramatic and pretty voice but that's not the voice for the queen of tge night. When she was on tge stage, Royal Opera House, decades ago, I and my friends were so disappointed and was questioning why she is a world famouse soprano. She was one of worst queen of the night I saw on the stage
Keith Arnei I appreciate for your criticize. But it’s too rude attitude to say “worst” to her own expression. She wanted to express Imaginary and unique Queen. Who said that Queen of the night should have the Cruel voice? It’s her free and own talent.
Deutekom's is by far the most unique.
Incredible voice. Unparalleled for this type of singing. I have never searched to see if she also performed in lighter operettas but I bet she could have.

I simply can’t imagine putting my whole, entire life, into one skill,one gift, one ability! Everything in these womens lives works around their voice! Everything they eat,or drink, how much sleep they get, never go into a smoky room, always being obsessive about not catching a cold, we’ll just everything! I could never have that much self discipline, it’s just not in me!
Diana at the end and erika miklos are the best for not only hitting the notes but clearly enjoying it and making it seem like second nature.
Deutekom sounds not human, just as her character demands it. Beautiful.

She sounds like a violin.
To me it seems that Mozart wrote these coloraturas to emphasyse indeed the magic and also might of the character. Deutekom sings them with such ease that it makes het uppermighty and magical. Superpowers! It may not be so poetic, but with those sharply articulated little notes to me always comes to mind the image of an automatic gun loosely fired from the hip to fill the sky with bulletholes.

dramatically, I love Diana Damrau's. Just on vocals alone, Lucia Popp got it for me.
lucia popp had it when I grew up in the sixties and she still has it today against all the great competition. Damrau is great a good second but I think she lets the acting interfer with her singing the aria.
Damrau defintely is the best actress. I loved the precision of Beverly Sills,
as well.

I prefer Cristina, and next to her Edda.
However, I think Slovakia has things to be proud of. The dancing especially. Also, that Slovaks are cousins of the British and many others with ancestry goings back to the great Sumarian civilisation after the last ice age. Do you know about the natural mummies of what is now Iraq? Men and women buried in their armour along with their armoured horses, about 4,000 years ago? A white shirt and piece of tartan also found there in the sands. Also the natural mummies of the Tarim Basin about whom there is a lot more information. Again found with tartan - one of which is the exact same as one of the tartans of my paternal paternal Scottish side. Except the one in the Tarim Basin lacks a thin yellow line (which may have been woven in but faded). Early this year in England I met a Central European lady in our local post office. Her skirt was the same caramel colour and pattern as another of my ancestral tartans (each clan/family has several different tartan patterns). The lady explained to me that it is also the tartan of her village in Central Europe.
The people who became the natural mummies of the Tarim Basin were there several millenia prior to the Han and clearly advanced for their time.
Iran, Iraq and much of the Fertile Crescent along with a very large area in what is now China were the homelands of our ancestors before dispersing and branching off into different counties. We are so much more than the country we were born in.
Remember that all peoples have done good and bad. If you look through the history of Slovakia then like the rest of us, you will find things you didn't even know about which you can be proud of anyway. Also there are some peoples who have done and still do far worse than Slovakia and our ancestors seem to have ever done. In some countries they have returned to cannabalism. In some countries they mutilate little girls (female genital mutilation). One peoples similarly mutilate boys (circumcised for religion not medical reasons). Also child brides as young as 8 and sometimes younger still, cutting off hands, burying women to their hips and stoning them to death for (or being accused of) having an affair or sex outside marriage. The list could go on. There are a lot worse countries than Slovakia, England, Ukraine, Russia or anywhere in Europe, etc.

I am going to go completely nuts and say that I like different performances for different reasons. Moser and Deutekom seem the most comfortable in the high register, Dessay is the most perfectly in tune from start to finish, and Damrau is obviously, even just going by the emotion in her voice, the best actress.
If I were listening to a dvd performance, I'd probably want it to be Dessay. If I were watching it live, Damrau every time.

Dessay indeed in tune and beautiful, but out of character, she dont sound like the queen of the night should sound, majestic and malefic, listen the last note is almost like a romantic cute sound
I agree-each singer offered something a little different. I love the pitch precision of June Anderson, the crystal timber of Hallstein, the ease of the terrifyingly difficult coloratura and that tempo of Beverly Sills, and the on-spot intonation and best trill at the end by Roberta Peters!
The times when Damrau was still training her voice properly. Since she stopped studying her technique has declined by a large amount, and the fact that she is tackling roles outside of her comfort range is only making it worse. Especially in Bel Canto she really lacks the education, intonation and characterization. Italian fach is not for her.

They all are fantastic. But Diana Damrau has the full package! Her singing while acting is just great! I doubt that others can do it like her.
Diana was not perfect by a long shot, but there is something to her performance, that just pushes it in front of all the other perfects for me... There is a feeling in the arias... Diana is just... amazing...
I really like the effortless way Dessay arrives to hit higher notes. Deutekom and Sumi Jo are excellent. All of these singers are very good, even though I did not like some of them.

For me - the crystal-clarity of Mimi Coertse's voice is beyond perfection - especially as this was recorded in the 60's way before the digital area. Maybe that is why Von Karajan used her again, and again, and....again, and again.
