- My tribute to coloraturafan, the original poster of this video.
Some of these are not High Fs. There are a number of High Es:
-Ingeborg Hallstein
-Pretty Yende
-Sylvia Geszty
-and the second Maria Aleida video
are all High Es.
Also there is of course a High A at the end done by Maria Remola.
As well as a weird interpolated High G/Ab by Erna Sack
The point is that this a collection of sopranos who chose to do the added High ending.
There are some changes compared to the old coloraturafan post:
The Rodica Vica video quality was terrible so I substituted her with Pretty Yende (who did the aria in the original E major but is still awesome). I substituted the original Edita Gruberova live recording with a studio recording that I consider higher in class. I moved the Mado Robin one to the end, and changed it to a better quality version, but lol I don't know why. And I also substituted the Sari Barabas one with Erna Sack cuz the Barabas one came out buzzy and terrible quality. I also substituted the Mady Mesple one with a video version.
But anyways, enjoy the video! And please comment!

Rossini wrote the aria in the key of E major for a Mezzo-Soprano. Damn sopranos have to steal everything.
actually was for a Contralto, a very high and lightier Coloratura Contralto which is very rare yet was kinda common at Rossini time, so was even deeper and heavier on the middle and lower notes than what nowadays many mezzos did sing of that half-way between this extrapolation half an octave above than when it was heard on the true proper voice for Rosina, Angelina/Cenerentola and other roles of Rossini heroines. Mezzos have been doing the roles as the true Coloratura Contralto usually never develops properly into a full singer career as just that becoming easily Lyrical and/or Dramatical Mezzos instead doing the coloratura roles as side-notes of her singing than doing that main career.
Rossinian heroines and well actually a lot of mezzo-roles were done a lot of time by sopranos as they still are the most common voice for opera and well those roles and songs are great to be included too. Hopefully this seems not happening as often since some last 30 or 40 years ago when it did happened more oftenly - nowadays just mezzos (and at times some true contralto) did sing these roles as they might have be done always, and sopranos doing that aren't longer the usual. (The other issue today could be that the modern mezzos or contraltos aren't much like the better equivalent singers some 60 to 80 years ago, and thus for many people aren't true mezzos or contraltos compared to them, ignoring totally how actually all voices rised a tone higher than back then as the whole musical clef tunning rised too, and so the voices had to follow it too, and won't be anyway nearer to those past golden glories then.)

@@anthonyehrenzweig1635 yes totally makes sense now as most of modern coloratura mezzos are quite just lazy-shorter underdeveloped sopranos than even the truer mezzos (and less about contraltos)
It was a very standard practice at the time of Rossini to transpose roles and arias for different fachs. Rossini himself transposed this for a soprano who later sang the role after the original premiere. Its certainly not something Rossini was upset about. Lol. So, I dont think anyone is "stealing" it by having it sung by sopranos.
5:09 Something about Korjus’ lack of vibrato makes that note sound hauntingly crystalline.

I like these comparisons because my favorite, Ingeborg Hallstien, continues to top the lists. I accept this as a personal opinion. In this case beauty is in the ear of the listener.
Byon Bill her technique and vocal quality is sublime
agreed. She and Moffo reign supreme in this video. Both have two completely different timbres but are quite beautiful. Hallstein's voice is so full and she has beautifully round low notes whereas most coloraturas disappear down there.

Wow! So many great ones here. But I've always been partial to Anna Moffo - she was the complete package. Great looks, great voice, great acting, great smarts, great humility and great charity. She absolutely sparkles in this role!
We are just here about the voices but here we go with the commentry on😒 looks,smarts and humility. Not saying the singer isn't those things and more. But I find it unecessary for people to comment about singers this way as if you personally know them 🤣 like that and have met them face to face. Its just about enjoying the music truly thats the only factor anyones here for. Is the singer valued any less if they don't have societys standards of "great looks". I think not 😌 she is also one of my favourites btw 🖤.

I had a 78 of Miliza Korjus when i was a kid and I'm still in awe of her after all these years. It must be said though that although many of these singers reach the note and sustain it, none can match the beauty of the voice of Lily Pons.
Maria aleida's technique was the best you can see her mouth in and very strong voice especially about high notes☺
Gianna's voice is sooooo smooth
i may have no musical knowledge, but according to my ears, gianna's voice reigns supreme, like you say, sooooo smooth... maybe it is the recordings, but this is also quite old, 1960 if i'm not mistaking.
Hallstein took the crown. I love a lot of these ladies, but her ability to navigate through a high passage, smooth without the slight bit of slack or strain is a bloody miracle.

Listening to this makes me miss being able to sing like that. It’s been over a decade since I’ve done any serious practice work and warm ups so I suck majorly now. I’m also no longer in my teens or twenties. *sighs* Ah those were definitely the good old days for my voice.

lol. nah. Given the violin and piano virtuosity explosion around that same time, improvisation was still in vogue then.
That was Rossini's remark to the young diva Adelina Patti after finishing the aria in a private concert. It was a witty, awesome observation to the young, eager to show-off Patti.
Lea Rodriguez i think this was the one callas was talking about in one of her masterclass in julliard where the soprano is singing this aria and there were too many runs by the singer... callas told that student about this story about patti.

Surprising and excellent work that requires a lot of talent and dedication as well as appropriate musical knowledge. I listen to each performance of the arias carefully and there is indeed a wonderful display of talent and perfection. However, for my personal taste, my favorite was missing, which is Teresa Berganza, who I believe performs the best execution.

I am so sorry to harp on this (no pun intended); however, I just listened to this video again. Erna Sack actually overshot that top note, and I'm not convinced that it was deliberate. I think she hit the G instead of the F, so all she could really do was make it sound like she intended to sing it in the first place. If she actually intended to hit that top G, then as a singer and musicologist, I must disagree with the interpretation.
I am grateful for this video. When I get a chance, I am going to dig up my music and have a closer look at it. When I first bought it, I sight-read through it and realized that I could sing this without a lot of trouble, providing I didn't add a lot of extra ornamentation or showy-offy stuff.
To me it feels like she’s listening for the orchestra to come back in and wondering why they aren’t. Then she realizes she’s on the wrong note. That just my guess though.

Awwwww. That was mean to include Gruberova's 2nd version. Her studio version was pretty awesome. I disagree with a few folks. I have just always responded to the pure, almost sweet, tones of Peters and Moffo. Might be being influenced by my love of their other work, though.
