I remember seeing a video several years ago when they were TRYING to get Big Boy to move a few inches, the beginning of his journey to be restored! This video is wonderful! To see him looking shiny and new... "Thrilling" barely begins to describe it! I'll probably never get across the country to see Big Boy in person, so I'm very grateful for your dedication in making your videos to share with the world -- THANK YOU! My own experience with restored steam locomotives involves two made in the Roanoke VA shops for Norfolk and Western: #611 ("The Queen of Steam") and #1218 -- both are currently in the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, but to see them steaming along the tracks in years past was a heart-clenching experience, so I can totally relate to how you must have felt seeing Big Boy on the rails again! #611 is elegance incarnate, and #1218's piercing whistle actually made my blood VIBRATE! I think I was born two decades too late... 😺💕🐾

Thanks -- very nice video. This is Ed's masterpiece, his life's major achievement, or if it's not, it should be. These last days are probably his crowning achievement, and sleep is the last thought in his mind. He deserves every minute of it.

e020443 he and his team have done the impossible. Somehow making it look easy. After following in some depth what they have done for the last 2 years few know the whole story. I hope to be able to tell it now that the project is a huge success. 12 hour days 6 days a week. Rebuilding not just the big boy but 844 and the Cheyenne shops. Like I say. The whole story is unbelievable

Ah, did anyone notice that diesel locomotive #4017 is parked right across the track from #4014? I understand that diesel #4014 was renumbered, so sad. It would have been way cool to have had diesel #4014 as the assist loco, after all it pulled the Big Boy home for the rebuild. Then after the trip to Ogden, renumber the diesel. Once again, way to go Toy Man, excellent screwing around.

Yup. 4017. And the poor thing is tagged to death. Lives in Evanston and runs to Ogden every few days.

@@davidwayneprins, Robert Frazier, couldn't have said it better.
FULL of information, but in an easy, homespun way.
It was The Big Boy that brought me here (figuratively)
but the show's quality has me staying.

Yes, I'd be lying if I didn't say I watch others that covered this ground breaking inaugural run of 4014. Your little "clips"; teasers if you will on that famous social media site have had me watered up all week. You kids never disappoint. As memorable as the premiere of 8444(844) and my beloved #4449. You two have out done yourselves in this effort. As Sister Evangelista said to her brother on Call the Midwife, "Well Done You!" Two big thumbs up. Greg and Jeanne.

It’s been a trip of a trip. We are in green river recuperating. Big boy is here for three days. And we need to gear up for the Rat Fink and edit some video. And treat our sunburn. And mow the lawn. And.... so it goes. Big boy is coming there soon! Schedule not set. Still debating whether they continue to Portland or turn east to salt lake. But will be at the museum in Sacramento in September. Or August but I guessing early September. And the narrow gauge convention at almost the same time. Wow!! Stay well! We are driving in the morning

Thanks a ton Dale and Karyn. This wreaks of nostalgia, that special ones like us share with our past. It reminds me of my 'School Song' Which starts like this, "We will hand down to future generations, a past that in our presence has been made. Traditions good, and strong whose first foundations, had in those earlier stressful days been laid. Now we are striving, in the way they trod, Our watchword, 'Self Reliance,' Thanks, to God!"
I hope that inspires many on your vlog. God bless! We cannot wait for Sunday! Love you both!

I love your videos. I'm sorry for imposing on you in Promontory, but I was in shock but thrilled when I saw both of you in person. You've given me ideas by looking at your videos of how to plan my trip like going to Heber Valley Railroad and Dairy Keen, and I've been to both places with my travelling buddies, thanks to you, and we love those places. God bless you, Toy Man! I've also chased the Big Boy from Evanston, Wyoming, to Morgan, Utah. Great chase!

Leandras Jones JR hi! We were soooo tired during this trip. Gette’n to old for this much screwing around I guess. Naw! But these weeks long events are really overwhelming. By the time we got to Green River we looked like something a cat spat out. Sunday’s show is almost ready. Some great drone footage from Ian who we worked with on the port of LA shows. Anyway nice to meet you and hope we were coherent. But as I recall I don’t remember and that’s a bad sign.

Thanks for all the interesting information you provided here, as you always do. I appreciate the fact that you lingered and shot some of the lubricators, valve gear and power reverser. I may be wrong but Ed gave a talk at last years train show about the restoration and he said they will leave the lubricators on full until the parts wear in .. then they will back off the lube once worn in. Should be less obvious leaking once broken in. Maybe I'm wrong ... not sure you can even adjust mechanical lube output. Anyone out there have a guess? It makes sense to over lube while breaking in. Thanks for great shots. Stay safe on the highways.

At 9:10 it is not really normal to have all that oil leaking out. The right front piston rod leaks more then it should. You can see puffs of steam on that rod when under load and with every puff of steam there is steam oil. With the tight schedule they likely just did not have time to fix it.

My favorite 4012 in Scranton used to take my kids to steam town and clime in the cab and look at the massive size The fire 🔥 box is so big they had steam jets to move the coal around so cool. Was the Erie Tripplex bigger than the big boy or was the big boy larger

Triplex is much more powerful and I think longer. But hard to use as a single locomotive as it breaks couplers When hooked to a long train. Usually used as a helper at the back. So some argue it’s not really a “locomotive”. Big boy is “bigger” overall and heavier. So it’s a debate.

Toy Man Television well the big boy is a more practical engine still in service today if not the biggest by def
Definitely more Successful of the two the matt shay will always have my heart ❤️ be cause of my proximity to Susquehnna and the Starucca viaduct and it’s unique look 👀 as to weather or not it’s a locomotive 🚂 because of the job it preformed pusher or use over long distances it’s still a loco 😝

We are in Evanston right now. Just got the most amazing footage! And drone footage. Our feet have called a strike. For us this is a real problem. Not keen on crossing a picket line but when it’s your own feet on strike.... as I contemplate that I hope I don’t need to cross the picket line to go to the bathroom. Perhaps I can enter into binding arbitration cause we want to get over to the roundhouse at golden hour because they have parked the train next to the old powerhouse at the roundhouse. Need to shoot that up!!

@@ToyManTelevision Thank you, it'll take me right back to my childhood then. The great Pennsy & C & O steamers I saw when a babe and they were decommissioned thereafter! WOW. Thanks for the heads up, dear sir! I'll get in touch with the UP or keep up with any news that you may have. I really appreciate the heads up as I am sure most of your viewers will as well! Wouldn't it be nice to see an AC 10 restored. From Wikipedia - "Had it not been for the negotiating efforts of the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society in the 1950s, 4294 likely would have been scrapped along with all of the other SP cab forward locomotives. As a result, 4294 is the only SP cab forward that has been preserved.
At one time, it was hoped that 4294 could be restored to operating condition. According to Calif State Railroad Museum personnel, the biggest impediments toward such a project are the estimated costs and the current policies of both Union Pacific Railroad and BNSF Railway in regards to operations. The cost of such a restoration is estimated between $1 million and $1.5 million, an amount that the museum feels would be prohibitive given the current prospects for its eventual operation." There are times when you just wish you had money to burn, baby! Good night & thanx! arthur.

God! I feel terrible for the 844, it's like the 844 is being ignored n no one is paying attention to it, n the 4014 is like the new celebrity of the Union Pacific, n the 844 is like the lone child of the family, n it's basically all like this; Big Boy: "Hello everyone. I'm very pleased to meet you all." This was when they were waiting there until they were given clearance; Big Boy: "Since I've got some time here with you all, let me tell you some of my stories from when I used to work on this railroad back in the day." 844: "*sigh* I guess since 4014 here is getting all the attention, nobody wants to see me anymore. But at least I'm still loved in many ways. No matter what, I'll always be the "Living Legend", and I'll still be in the hearts of all enthusiasts!"

do you think the Big Boy would look odd with Ditch Lights on it?

No, the Big Boy has 68 inch drivers and the 844 has 80 inch drivers.

    • @russellmoore1533
      @russellmoore1533 5 років тому

@@basedjorts Wheel size is somewhat akin to gears in a car, the bigger the diameter the faster the train can go, but you lose the power to pull heavy loads, hence why 4014 was built to haul huge freight sets, and 844 was more for lighter passenger service.

The oil over the motion is probably because the piston rod glands on the leading motion leaked for the first few days and the crew have not had a chance to clean it off. This most likely how the engines would have looked in service if the maintenance was starting to lack. In this case though it is part of the running in from the rebuild.
