Thanks Mike. I learnt about your channel from Dave at Toy Man Television. The two of you share a great passion for steam trains. Thank you for sharing this. We were mesmerized!
Its things like this that remind why I got into the truck repair trade to begin with, saving a piece of mechanised history! Glad to see one of these locomotives breathing again. Hopefully they will do a freight run with the 4014 like they did with 3985 many yrs ago
Holy crap! That old whistle just sends chills through out my whole body. And the sound of the train working! Always fun to see and hear these old big boys for real or on video.
I can not either, I am skeptical; the diesel/electric locomotive seems to be doing the work. Is Big Boy just smoke and whistle? If the diesel is there just because is is required to be in case of emergency, then why is it revved up and changing engine sounds in cadence with the motion of the train? Hope to be wrong.
Rooster 4014 is moving under her own steam. The diesel is there as backup, yes, but also as a source of electricity for the cars. Don’t fret, the movement is all 4014!
@@nickguy5245 I dissagree. The traditional steam sound is not present. There is no release of spent steam.in the exhaust either. The diesel is doing the work.
zalmaflash what do you mean you disagree? They’re facts. This was a test run to see how she would move under her own power. The locomotive isn’t working hard because she’s only pulling the two cars and the diesel. Don’t be a fool
Nice job thanks for getting it back in action. I saw a big boy in person at the B and O train museum you don’t realize how big they are till you are next to it massive
Tomorrow morning May 4th, I shall take up a position just west of Cheyenne at a road crossing and watch and video as the Big Boy and the 844 head west. That will be a sight too see, and yes I will be safe.
@@epicswag5509 Its up. Look for 4014 and 844 under steam. Channel name is James Hart. But there seems to be a lot of channels with that name. But I only have one video up, so far.
For anyone that is wondering why the diesel is on there, that is probably in dynamic braking to simulate a load of a train. That is sometimes done to help add a little resistance.
Thanks for a great video. Wish they had blown the whistle once or twice more. There is something visceral about steam, it is so alive. Hearing that whistle brought tears to my eyes. @@axelpatrickb.pingol3228 Given this is Union Pacific, 4014 WILL be pulling freight over Sherman Hill in the Future. Thats just how UP does things. Plus, pulling heavy freight makes the engine work hard. Making the engine work hard every once in a while is good for the loco.
