I would like to know about Cypress Grove Cemetery. I had an uncle who served in the Union buried there. I would like to visit the grave someday. What do you know about it?
Hey Andrew! Long time since the Saint Francisville Transitory Theatre! I would like to be able to take my family back to New Orleans. Unfortunately, the air quality is such that my wife and daughter were coughing for three days after leaving the last time we were there and it’s not getting better apparently.
You gave awesome tours at the Myrtles, and I’d love to see one of the tours you give of the Big Easy.
My best advice to folks visiting New Orleans is to look like you go here. If you're walkin around in an 'I heart NOLA' t-shirt wearing a giant camera, sunvisor, and fanny pack while carrying a French Quarter map and looking confused, every conman from here to Baton Rouge is gonna light on you like flies on a hog.
Or at this time of year, like a termite to a light.
LOL "She doesn't even go here." - Mean Girls
Good advice when visiting any city.
It took me a while after my last visit to figure out why I wasn't being harassed on my last day in the city like the days before. It was probably because I was wearing some old raggedy shorts and a forgettable shirt on that day instead of my best clothes like on the days prior. Not even the scammers outside the train station gave me a second look.
LMAO Tourists do the same thing everywhere. LOL Im from DC and I always wondered why they have to wear a cheesy "Washington, DC or I heart DC" shirt - while they are still here!! LMAO
I live here so I don't know why I watched this, but it's all good information.

Grew up in New Orleans and this is a great video. Couple years ago I was waiting outside Port Of Call for a table and for the first time ever a dude came up with "I bet you I can tell ya where you got dem shoes!" "I got em on my feet in front of Port Of Call in New Orleans." He threw up his hands......"Oh man.....you from here!" and he rode away on his bike. LOL
He probably won't appreciate our video then. Thanks for watching, David.

"piss off mate, I live here" is usually my response
@@woodsy900 Considering the term “mate” has a different meaning in the US, I doubt it’ll get the message across. 😉
Dude!! Just got back from NOLA and that shoe guy went up to my husband and tried saying he could guess where he got his shoes and that he got them in NOLA. My husband was like nope I didn't buy them here. And dude said nah man I didnt say buy I said where you got them and you got them right here on your feet in NOLA. He wanted to be paid for this stupid ass joke and he very aggressively tried to polish my husbands shoes as well. Really fucking annoying. Were not even tourists, really. We live a few hours away and my brother lives in NOLA and we stay w him and enjoy the popular local spots instead of tourist spots. But we happened to be near the French Market and that's where he was. He was so aggressive and pushy and was right in my husband's face and personal space. It was awkward and felt like he was going to fight at any second.
My sister went to New Orleans with my brother in law a few years back , she apparently booked accommodation in a shady area and her taxi driver was like “ are you sure , you wanna stay here ? , let me see if I can get you better service “ then proceeded to fix them up witha better city experience , she had a blast after that ,
Thanks for adding your family's experience, Jess. If you haven't already done so, hopefully, you can check out our other virtual tours of New Orleans ua-cam.com/play/PLpNEdLF6RWV3oDPK7SD9GOttlhvaGBsh2.html.
@@FreeToursbyFootHQ nice , if I ever get to New Orleans I know who to look up :)
What was the tour so other visitors can know to avoid?
Talk to strangers, for sure, especially musicians. They love talking about their craft and will hip you to jam sessions off the beaten path if you truly love music. World-class musicians take to Royal Street on Friday afternoons to hype their weekend shows.
My fiancée and I just took the Bayou St. John walking tour and it was the best excursion we’ve had in the city! Andrew was nice, knowledgeable, and a real native of the neighborhood, getting approached by a number of people who seemed to know him from around town. When we asked for tips and recommendations, he was genuine, honest, and definitely trying only to offer the best that New Orleans has to offer. Even in the blazing heat, he was mindful of the group’s comfort level and would find shady spots to stop and talk. I would definitely urge anyone looking for a trip off the beaten path in New Orleans to make this a priority.
Andrew, you’re the best! I would like to add to the scams and cons - BEADS! If you are approached on the street by anyone wanting to put beads around your neck, you should know that those beads are literally picked up off the dirty streets and from the wet gutters when the Bourbon Street crowds finally disperse in the early morning hours. I cringe so much when I see unsuspecting tourists in this situation. Ick!
Thanks for the tip and love your avatar.
Yup! I was offered beads by some random dude and was like..hard pass. Nasty. And they expect to be paid for that nastiness too. They get aggressive and crazy.
That’s what my cousins warned me about when they used to live there, before moving to Baton Rouge.
I am a native. Born and raised in New Orleans. I can tell everyone that watches this channel that what is given to you and this video is absolutely right on. I had the "shoe-shiner" experience. I was too broke to even consider paying and we ended up laughing together about the whole thing. Love that city.
Think he just got kicked out of jackson square, the magicians had some beef with him for a bit. Not sure though if anybody knows lmk its been a few months
I am a local and Idisagree with his opinion of the shoe guys. They don't expect much and they're a kind of funny tradition.
I had it happen to me in 1997. You got them on your feet. Squirt! Well now, you want to pay me to do the other shoe too?
Love how you always gave a counterargument saying that all these things have some sort of place or use in some way, but that the discerning visitor should avoid them. Felt very balanced and still informative

Hi there, I'm planning on moving back home to New Orleans from California by no later than April. How can I get in contact with you because I'm an entertainer and actor FYI 😎

I really loved New Orleans! One of the best vacations ever. Live music, impromptu parades, amazing food, the tours, the people and the history were amazing! I’ve never enjoyed a vacation more, I can’t rave enough about the experience. The only downside was the under 21 crowd.
Being from the greater Baton Rouge area, I got to grow up with the advantage of a day trip to New Orleans being something fun and different, but also the knowledge to not fall for any of these. "Where you got those shoes? I bet I can tell you where you got them?". "Bruh...I may look like a tourist, but I know how to pronounce Tchoupitoulas Street, I'm not the mark you're looking for", lol!

Hey I have a question do you know if the Rod Wave concert is still happening in Baton Rouge July 4th
We just got back from NOLA (05/10/2022-05/14/2022)....and it is not the same anymore. most of the art shops were gone.....and shops had graffiti all over the doors that were out of business. There were resterants that were closed during normal hours 11-12.....lunch anyone? The Market had 5 stands everyone else was just gone........Also we found that no one really cared about any kind of service....people always looked pissed that you walked in to get food......then they were super nice when it was time for a tip. Oceana’s all of us got food poisoning....manager said " Well I didn’t see you get sick so it didn’t happened" Pier 424 one night was great...the other was a hot mess.
I know that people say let the good times roll…..But dam....
It's best to go when it's not overcrowded. My husband and I went to Mardi gras and some guy patted me down from my waist to my calf's trying to pick my pockets. He disappeared in the crowd before I knew what was happening and before I could tell my husband. He didn't get anything because my husband was holding the money.....lol
I've heard some outrageous lies coming from the mouths of tour carriage drivers. "This house was built in 1497 by Marie Antionette."
Me too! I'm a huge history buff. Once time I took a carriage ride, the the driver was TOTALLY full of B.S. I told my friend to ignore his fairy tale stories...
LMAOOOOOO
Lol 😂 what.
I agree...everyone here knows she had that house built in 1498....my great great great great uncle was her carriage driver

So it seems some HISTORICAL facts are in order here, despite a famous phrase of many of New Orleans’ “guides” being, “never let facts get in the way of a good story.”
1. Marie Antoinette (the last queen of France) sadly never travelled outside of Europe and thus had never even visited the Americas, right along lived here. Her life, as lavish as it was, was basically spent entirely in Austria and France. So no, she never lived in New Orleans.
2. Marie Antoinette had 4 biological children, only one of whom, Marie Thérèse Charlotte, lived into adulthood. None of them ever made it to New Orleans either. Yes, it’s possible two of them were “illegitimate” as they may have been fathered by her Swedish lover.
3. Marie Antoinette had 4 adopted children, but there is no record if any of them having traveled to the new world either as they all lost their funding when the royals were executed and had no titles of their own. In fact, one of her foster sons ended up dying of hunger on the streets.
I appreciate how diplomatic you are by not tearing down the touristy stuff and acknowledging it has its place but giving much more authentic experiences that aren't as well known. I HAD to get a hand grenade and some Krystal on Bourbon our first night and get that out of my system 😅 but the rest of the trip we had a fantastic time on walking tours and talking to folks and eating all the wonderful foods! Loved the experience.
Thanks for watching! If you know of anyone else who might also enjoy this video, please do share us with them. We would really appreciate that! Thank you.
Haven't had Krystal since college in Nashville, straight rip off of White Castle but great formula
@ronv6637 I'd always assumed White Castle was a rip-off of Krystal 😄 Krystal is my preferred, but that might be a regional thing!
We just got back from New Orleans and we always come back with paintings from Frenchmen and by St. Louis Cathedral!
I hope our videos were able to help with your trip planning, Franee. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
What was the average cost of the paintings?

The one time I was in NO downtown for a conference, the clerk told me as I checked in to walk away from anyone who tells me 'Bet you $10 I know where you got your shoes". Took about 5 minutes for someone on the street to ask me that.
Can you explain what that means?
They reply with on your feet. Some then try to clean your shoes and charge.
@@XCristianxX that's hilarious!! 🤣
My reply is "out your ass. Want me to put them back?"

My wife and I have been visiting New Orleans on a regular basis since 2009. We did the French Quarter thing for the first couple of years, but soon learned that there is much more to the city than the French Quarter. We stay at a timeshare on St. Charles Avenue and we purchased our own bicycles to tour the city. There is so much to see! We also discovered that the better restaurants are outside the French Quarter (with the exception of the high-end restaurants such as Muriel's, Brennan's, etc.).

I wanted to say thank you so much for this video. Very, very helpful. I was just adding up the cost of everything...lol. Good info to know so my trip will be a little budget friendly.
Solid advice. A couple of low cost outings I would include are Preservation Hall where they still play unadulterated New Orleans jazz (our walking tour guide told us about it....) and the WWII museum, (world class)
Both good suggestions. We'll be covering both in future videos.
Yes yes and yes, preservation hall is a must. As well as O'Brian.
This was very helpful. Thank you.

I've been before and my husband and I are going again this coming spring. I cannot wait
I visited NOLA 2 years ago and loved the experience! Ive always wanted to come here and it finally happened. Researched ahead of time what I wanted to do and some places to eat. I met a lot of friendly people and had some great meals.
Of course, my main draw was watching my team, the Saints, play the Eagles in the playoffs which we won! I can't wait to go back to see things I missed the 1st time.
The walking tour is nice, just be aware of the heat and humidity. We found a NOLA tour walking to an old cemetery through the French quarter. It was very hot that day and our group dwindled down for 25 to 5 at the end. Our guide was a trouper and did not miss a beat. We asked questions and he was happy to chat and point out things. At the end I was sad to see the last few people wander off leaving only me and another person (both our spouses had taken to AC to cool off half way through. I was disappointed my wife had most of my cash and was no longer with US, so I gave up my lunch money. The tour we took was over an hour and the poor guy only made $25. So i did the best thing i could giving him reviews. I commend you doing a pay what you can tour. I wish you all the best. These walking tours are the best.
I like to visit NOLA in April or October. A little humid, but not nearly as hot as in the summer, for sure.
Did you feel safe the whole stay? Restaurant reservations a must?
@@dr.emilschaffhausen4683 New Orleans is perfectly safe as long as you don't act like a tourist and stay in the areas where there are a lot of people. I think we only ever made a restaurant reservation if we were going somewhere fancy.
@@AJDunnReadsandWrites Thank you for the reply!
I can't believe people don't take the weather into consideration. Just look at a map. New Orleans is literally bordered by water on two sides. Of course it's going to be very humid.
One thing you can do is mention your tour guide and the name of his tour group if you thought he was worth it.
I think you hit the appeal of Bourbon St on the head! When I visited- it was (like you said) where the rules seem very lax. It turned from very fun to incredibly overwhelming within a couple hours of being there.
Great advice. I have been there many times. People should check on line for information and schedules.
Thank you! This is sort of what I was looking for....I appreciate it!

Good tips. We came down for the French Quarter Festival several years ago. Lots of great free music. We did a walking tour that I thought was great. It ended up being a personal tour because the other people didn't show up but the guide still took us around. We did all public transit. We took a swamp tour. My wife does a really good job of planning things out for our vacations before we leave home. She found some really great food by sifting through reviews for hours. She also happened to be in New Orleans on business just after 9/11. That was a weird time.

Thank you, Andrew! You've mentioned a number of these tips in various videos, but it's very helpful to have them all in one place. Video quality was excellent, as well (okay, the flag background was a bit over the top--but fun).
You’re awesome Andrew, such great videos and an eloquent speaker! Would be lucky to take one of your tours for sure

great story found it informational-hope to go to New Orleans soon-when its safer to travel-thanks for the tips
We did one of the Free walking tours in the Garden District. One of the best tours ever. Was well worth the nice gratuity we left our guide. I always recommend to my clients this service when they are staying in NOLA.
Thank you for recommending us, Trey. Much appreciated.
@@FreeToursbyFootHQ That’s the name of the tours? We just made our vacation plans there.
One BIG exception on Bourbon St. is Fritzl's Jazz Club. Fabulous experience. Tiny hole in the wall, one drink minimum. Spent many happy nights here on my many trips to NOLA and always go back for more.
Good suggestion. Thank you Claudette. Hope you will also take one of our tours next time you are in town!
I second Fritzel's. Great house band. Only place I like popping into on Bourbon.
Just found your channel. What a great job! I sub'd. I moved there in 1981 and lived there and on the West Bank for many many years. When I got there, I had never even heard of Mardi Gras!! (or the French Quarter!) What a shock! Keep up the great work.

No idea why this popped up in my UA-cam suggestions but so glad that it did
So many areas have a tourist side and a local side
This was very informative and very helpful in spotting good and bad things and hopefully someday will be able to come and visit

We ubered from the airport to Canal St and it was as cheap as the taxi option. However, our uber had to drop us off around the block because there was a weekend parade going through right in front of our hotel. It was awesome, but keep it in mind if you plan any weekend travel days.
Thanks again for watching and sharing you experience with us! If you know of anyone else who might also enjoy these videos, please share us with them. We would really appreciate that! Thank you.
Go to Dooky Chase's restaurant. Unforgettable experience.
Unforgettable good or bad?? Just sayin'...
Dooky Chase Restaurant what a name lol
@@ffjsb good!!
Very assuring and helpful.
My husband and I once visited New Orleans so that I could attend a fitness conference. We also had a friend of a friend who was a local. We had a blast. Our friend took us to a fab restaurant near St. Jackson Square, we thoroughly loved listening to the band at Preservation Hall, we indulged in frozen daqueris on those humid nights , explored the Charles District by trolley and on foot, went on a free riverboat cruise, courtesy of the fitness conference sponsors, and created our own walking tours where we made up stories...to the utter confusion of my Swiss fitness colleague! But the most fun was dancing the two-step at Tipitina's fai do do on a sweltering Sunday afternoon. I'll never forget what a great time we had, and the locals were more than eager to teach us the two-step.
I have a special connection to New Orleans because my grandfather is from there. Although I never met him I always heard the stories of how good he could cook. He moved to Chicago and met my grandmother and I enjoyed the story she will tell me about my grandfather. My first visit to New Orleans was in 2013. I feel like I was channeling my grandfather and I instantly fell in love with the city. A lot of the locals would tell me stories of Katrina, like it was yesterday. I fell in love with the diversity and architecture of the city. The trees the Southern Accents New Orleans is a very special place you can feel the Soul and Spirit of the city in your heart. I will be booking my hotel room tomorrow to return in September. Thank you for your video I am so excited to return.

This company's foot tours are the best. I did the Garden District walking tour, and our guide was so energetic and full of great stories and knowledge. I'm not big on tours, but I would do another Free Tours By Foot tour in New Orleans any time I am in town.

Your tours and tips are awesome!
Glad you like them!
I found pedicaps very helpful during my visits to New Orleans. While I walked as much as I could, I did get tired. The pedicabs were there and they got me where I needed to go. I had some good conversations with the drivers. I did not expect historical information from them.
This was a few years ago and the rates were cheaper than a cab (not around when I needed one anyway).
BTW, I did use cabs to travel between Amtrak Station and hotels. And to go from hotel to a tourist site. Especially on my first visit.
Agreed! I found them to be a good alternative to walking if you were just walked out...
Definitely. I think we were comparing them more as tours than as a means of transportation. However, without set rates, it is important to agree on a price before stepping into the pedicab.
I pedicabbed in new orleans from from 2011 until 2015. Jt was my favorite job I ever had.
@@FreeToursbyFootHQ pedicabs do have set rates. The rates are set by the city. The rate is a dollar per block, per person. Now if you're going like 2 and a half miles, I'm not counting all those blocks to give you an exact fare, I'm going to estimate. Anyways, pedicabs from the yellow company are instructed to discuss the fare before going anywhere. No one likes to be surprised.
Excellent!!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you so much for the info
Very entertaining and educating. Just plan my Nola trip next month and haven’t had a clue what to do first!
Go eat at R & O’s
I love all your videos. I lived in va my whole life and always wanted to visit Nola and Louisiana in general. In 2020 I got my wish. I spend 9 months in La from 2020 to 2021 working as a travel nurse. I visited Nola my every weekend off. I love Baton Rouge and saint Francisville too
Hey Danielle! Thanks for the story and for your work here - I'm sure you saw some stuff during that time and I hope the time spent exploring the state was a good way to blow off steam.
