It's hilarious that has been sat in my video plans for like 2 years but I didn't think anyone would care 🤣
I was gifted a Thai cutting in 2020 or 2021 from my aunt who’d had her plants for a few years. She didn’t know what they were; they were gifted to her by a nursery. The petioles on that Thai are super short - sometimes when new leaves come in I’m afraid they won’t even clear the prior leaf and they end up all crowded together.
Since then I’ve bought two baby Thai and those petioles are super long. The leaves on those barely touch because the petiole grows way past the prior leaf. I originally assumed this is because the plants were smaller/younger but as they’ve sized up over the past year or so the ratio between leaf size and petiole length has remained the same. So I definitely see the difference.
I will say that the 2.0 are splashier overall in terms of the amount of creamy streaks and flecks, though.

Kaylee.. the 1.0 and 2.0 Thai is a real thing! I bought mine (2.0) in 2020 and it has grown but the leaf to stem ratio is still off. Besides that, it takes forever to have fenestrations and size up. Mind you, mine is growing in a south facing window and is overall a healthy plant. I always wondered why I saw other people with a Thai that sized up with almost every leaf and started to have more fenestrations. Anyway, great video!
I’ve owned both the old stock and new stock of Thai constellations. There’s a seller in Florida that actually sells cuttings of her “Thai 1.0” frequently and that’s how I got mine. The older stock Thai is so hardy, hardly needs any attention and the I have noticed the petioles are so much shorter than the Thai 2.0 I purchased in 2021. I’m honestly planning on getting rid of my Thai 2.0 and getting another cutting of the older stock because it’s so much better.

My local bougie greenhouse has a stunning ~10ft across Thai con. I assume it must old stock if it’s that big. So clearly I need to buy it 😂 It’s priced at $1,250 which seems like a steal compared to some of the ultra tiny ultra rare plants that Kaylee imports, right? 😉
I bought a 2.0 in early 2023 and had nothing but problems. I then bought a 1.0 and it’s done brilliantly. I cut it up a couple of weeks ago as I think more people need it. The 2.0 has really given Thai Cons a bad name IMO…

I’d love a wish list video that included rare and more common. I feel like I’m in a wishlist slump and I’ve been trying to make myself consider some plants that wouldn’t normally be my taste.
Anyone noticed that Monstera Adansonii has suffered a similar fate. In the sense that the style of growth from Adansonii purchased from B&Q is very different (i.e. clumping with twisted leaves) to a plant purchased from a professional supplier (showing more traditional climbing behaviour). Is this because of TC causing some kind of mutation or something environmental. Any thoughts?
monstera adansonii has multiple subspecies, it might be a TC issue, but it might be also the mother plant being different for different sellers.

I feel like the 1.0 could be hit or miss as well… I got one from early TC (I’m assuming because I got it last spring) but so far this plant is absolutely gorgeous. Maybe it’s my potting mix? Maybe it’s my fertilizer? Maybe it’s the fact that I keep it outside in part sun for the summer? I don’t know.
I recently moved back to Thailand from US and got my mind blown on how many different Thai Cons they have here in Thailand. I saw an actually ‘Creme Brûlée’ here and it doesn’t look like the one you have. I think to actually identify ones as ‘Creme Brûlée’ it should have more yellow (or variegation) more than green. There are more interesting Thai Cons such as ‘Green Snow’, ‘Platinum’ or ‘Legacy’ as well…
Thai Constellation Creme Brulee is amazing and real. Just need to find a reputable seller, who propagated it by cuttings from the line identified and named as Creme Brulee.
I’ve seen the philodendron sp. tropicals being called philodendron oxapapense variegated. It looks similar enough online but I don’t own either plant so I'm just guessing
Two different types of monster was one that is a small one and one that's a large one. It's patio to leave halfway means it's a large one if it's only 3/4 of the way it's a small one or something like that
The Costa Farms attempt at growing Thai Constellations look like the pre-2019. Recently received a tiny Thai as a gift and find its variegation very high compared to when I was deciding between an Albo (imported in 2021) and Thai purchase. Glad to see unique plants nonetheless
I wonder if we might have some leftovers from Thai 1.0 here in Europe/Germany, when we bought them in 2021/2022. They basically all came from the Netherlands, but were cuttings from big plants with intense root system, don't laggy at all, so motherplants must have been around in 2018 for sure. After that we got the baby and young plant hype and when I see them later on they really looks kinda different to me? But idk :)

I bought my thai in the begining of 2021, ordered it from the Netherlands. It's growing outdoors, huge mature leaves, short petioles, super hardy, never had any pests, it has survived more than two month in a broken terracotta pot 😂 with the football exposed to the elements ( I've but the pot together with zip ties, avoiding repotting it because it has attached itself to the wall). I wonder... It has average variegation for a Thai, mostly speckles of cream but some sectorial areas of variegation too (not on all the leaves). It's so much easier than my albo small form

@@ritaborges5348 yes that almost sounds like mine, the only issue I have with her is some browning on the sectorials in the winter time, but thats only because she just stays all year long 1 Meter away from the south facing window without additional light in the wintertime. I really prefer that well balanced variegation over this overhyped halfmoon stuff :)

I’ve noticed that the OG Philo. Joepii are a lot hardier and robust than the newer TC Joepii that are being cranked out too.
I get what you mean with 1.0 and 2.0.. but did you put in perspective that a cutting most likely regains size faster than a “babyplant”? In my experience at least… and the long stems would be a result of not being close enought to the lights.. yes the babyplant got premium care but the cutting is bigger and taller, so even in worse light it could even absorb as much as the small one would?! So kind of makes sense to me to get that result, if you compare you might need the same growing/propagating method?! Sorry if I’m wrong, not trying to offend anyone just my thought process 😅

I do see the difference and I love the Thai 1 version the size of the leaves. I now know mine is version 2, but I am still happy with it and a new leaf is coming out that hasn’t unfurled yet.

My new P. Snowdrift just came through with new pink-white growth also! Does anyone here know how time of year factors in to color changing plants, ie ghost, whipple, etc?

As far as I know, there’s several variegation types that correspond to specific plants. Snowdrift, whipple way, and painted lady have pink pigment in new leaves that fades as they harden off. Ghost is similar except the new leaves start white and fade to green. I think they’re like that because they don’t develop chlorophyll until the leaf gets older. Unlike the painted lady that always has green under the pink pigment, the ghost may start out with no color at all. Paraiso verde is especially interesting because the variegation is pretty much entirely tied to temperature. Mine has a grow light 12 hours a day but it only grows variegated leaves when temps are consistently above 70F. Pretty neat!

I have Thais from pre 2020, 2020+ and 2023 hardware store baby edition. They are all super hardy and I think the 2020+ is little more leggier than the pre 2020 or 2023, but not that visibly as the one you showed 🤔.
The pre 2020 is slowest to grow new leafs for some reason - 2023 and 2020 pushed several new leafs in the middle of winter when it's 18C inside and there is no bonus sunlight for months. Pre 2020 will wait until spring to push new leafs. It's in the same pot as the 2023, so their conditions are identical.

All that I know about thai, is that my older thai is an unstoppable beast and when it was younger it was a bit leggy, but it isn't now. 🤷♀️ Thai has never given me issues. Albos... they rot. I don't deal in large quantities. I wish there were numbers that we could look at.
I think i have a 1.0. Buyed in Winter 2021. I can do what i want, this beast i can't kill it. Every cutting of this plant, grow fast, have at the 2nd or 3rd new leaf a split. I think it was a year ago, the 8 leaf of my baby, had a bigger leaf that the mother plant. Never had any problems with the motherplant or the cuttings. NEVER. In other videos, the information is, that 2.0 die faster, needs more attentions. My love a lot of sun. I love my beast a lot. End of february is cutting time. Yeyyy.

It varies just like anything else.
I have 3 or 4 thais all 2.0, because I didn't like the og Thais and their variegation but love the new variegation (with another on the way).
I out of those is a chunk pumpkin of a Thai, it took forever to get going which is also why I got more, while the others are 🙄 leggy as all get out with the same care across the board.
🤷♀️ maybe the chunk is large form and the others are small, intermediate or whomever from whatever stock.
It's genetics, it varies regardless.

Hey, could you do a video on how to spot an intermediate from of monstera. I have had my monstera delicious a for coming up to a year now and I have not been able to identify it as a small form monstera as the inter-nodal spacing is no where near as large as that of small form, and the growth pattern of the leaves have been on a decent increase. However, when i look at a large form monstera, particularly one that still has unfenestrated leaves, i struggle to put it in the category of large form as mine looks slightly different in terms on spacing between the nodes being slightly further apart, but still a lot closer together then small form. That would be really useful. Thanks.
Maybe even a video of you holding all three forms showing the differences. Would be great.

I wish I could attach my Thai constellation photo it has so much white cream color I wasn’t expecting it because I bought the least white cream splash plant out of so many because I was afraid of getting to much white cream color and now I’m freaking the f out because I’m getting basically a lot of half moons and this plant gets a lot of light the stem grows bigger as the plant gets bigger so ya but I totally understand what you mean by 1.0 and 2.0
Hmm, might there be several different ThaiCons getting to Europe? I bought mine as a tiny 3 leaf plant that was imported as TC. It has given me no grief, even with some rotten roots because of my watering sloppiness, and the leaf to petiole ratio is similar to your 1.0, though I can't tell with yours being a far more mature plant. It does however have some issues with propagation, one of the butt cuts got root rot and the other died back to a wet stick 😅 both produced new growth, though
I wonder if the Tai 1.0 vs 2.0 is a tissue culture issue. Some plants seem to be growing goofy when they are tc compared to naturally grown plants.
I have a question and I'm just not sure where to ask it so here I am. I've been watching tons of your vids (and others) and I'm guessing you've gone over this and I just haven't found it.
When you take a cutting (monstera in my case), I kinda get what to do with the cutting but what about the "bottom" part? Does it just start growing again or have I just cut off that ability? I've recently come across "spent nodes" which seems to me is what the bottom part if the plant would be since it's already done its thing.. Or no?

I doubt my Thai is 1.0 since I got it last May, but omg it’s been such a fabulous plant. I was a three leaf starter 9 months ago and now it’s on its 3rd leaf with inner fenestrations! The poor people in my online plant group are celebrating one single fenestration after like a whole year of growth 🥲 And that’s if their plant makes it at all! Granted, care differences go a looooong way. But I’m so pleased with my Thai. Now I’ve got a new albo to focus on. I’m feeling kinda sus about it because the two leaves that have opened since I got it are… texturey 😑 Please no virus 🤞

I don’t know if my TC is just different or what, but it doesn’t have super long petioles. I do feed super heavily, but I don’t really do anything special other than that. Mine hasn’t gotten root rot or anything, either.
I got my first Thai con last year and I would like to say it is a 1.0? It was very juvenile when I got it, but upon comparison with my newer ones, it certainly wasn’t as leggy.
Came here to further investigate on this drama. I find the evidence to be uncompelling so far, I believe leaf size and petiole length to be influenced by epigenetics but I might be wrong. Next time I order some TC plants, I'll get a more recent ''Thai Constellation'' and grow it side by side with my old one to see if I notice any difference...
I'd be very curious to hear more about this ''intermediate form'' of Monstera deliciosa that you keep hinting about though. As always, I'm curious to hear your thoughts but it also happens that I'm trying to disambiguate the various forms of Monstera deliciosa for myself as a collector. I believe that most of your viewers are familiar with Monstera deliciosa var. borsigiana (surprisingly difficult to find a non-variegated specimen but Ken's Philodendrons has them) but I recently became acknowledged with the very elusive Monstera deliciosa ''Tauerii''. There is not a lot of info about ''Tauerii'' online, it's said to be a more compact version of the deliciosa and all the pictures I could find look like light-deprived deliciosa, they seriously look like shit, super leggy growth, long petioles, small leaves, little to no fenestrations...
I suspect that some (maybe most) deliciosa on the market today is actually ''Tauerii'' (either that or people suck at growing Monstera) because I just keep seeing so many leggy Monsteras with immature leaves in houseplant groups while mine has leaves getting close to 3ft long. Unfortunately, we live in a world where most Monstera deliciosa are still labeled as ''Split-leaf Philodendron'', so I do not expect large-scale sellers to do their due diligence and start labeling their plants accurately but if, at least, the plant collectors could come to a consensus, that would be nice.
Also, I highly doubt that you'd fall for this but I've seen people online conflating ''Tauerii'' and ''Compacta'' while they look nothing like each other just because they're both said to be compact forms of Monstera deliciosa. ''Compacta'' is so cute, I just ordered one from Japan and am waiting for my importing license at the moment!
I think my Thai Con is probably the 1.0. I’ve had no trouble with root rot, internode spacing is tight and the leaf to petiole is good 😀🇨🇦

I have a late 2018 Thai only because my friend,who was moving out of state, had it and didn't want to move all of her plants. She gave it to me along with a few other plants. I didn't know what I had until I was researching how hardy Thai-Cons were and came upon your video. I accidentally left it in the garage over the weekend in our NM home while we were vacationing at the beach. I remembered and was able to have the housekeeper bring it into my plant room. The temperature high was 37, and the lows were 9 and 12 degrees. I lost 1 leaf that was semi yellowing before the incident. I almost sold it because I have three other "2.0" Thai's. I'm so glad I didn't. It seems to me that the "1.0" is also a little greener than the "2.0" and the variegation pattern is a little different. It's probably just my crazy observation, but I do see a difference.

The 'portilla' means last name of the family who are founders and owners of Eguagenera. They have registered a lot of newly discovered plants and lots of hybrids.

I think she’s still working on getting it approved in different countries. Even if she sells through Amazon, she has to go through verification processes to follow import rules for each and every country. And every state in the case of the US 😮💨 Apparently fertilizer is somewhat heavily regulated because the chemical components can be misused for illegal purposes

I have both Thai 1.0 and 2.0 and I agree with everything you said. 1.0 has an amazing leaf-to-petiole ratio. It's slower growing than standard Monstera but just as robust. 2.0 is a sad weakling.

That was an old school thai con, not even a creme brulee at all. You would like to get the compact thai con ones, they call it compacta, they're shorther in petioles. Informative video as always 👍🙏
