- Moving to France post Brexit, then you have to watch this!!!
In this video, I answer our subscribers questions about the trials and tribulations of moving to France after Brexit. But despite all the woes, it has definitely been worth it.
We left the UK to live in rural France in 2023.
And we did so with the help of channel 4's tv show A Place in the Sun which is due to air sometime this year...kind of a catchy lyric isn't it? well watch to the end.
We decided that we had had enough of living in England, the UK, sold everything, cashed in our pensions and moved with our two children to the Charente region of rural France.
Well that was nine months ago and in that time we have dealt with some issues believe you me. Condemned electrics that we had to sort, a condemned log burner, a condemned chimney, a leaking roof, a none conforming boss tank, and trip to the A&E (Emergency room) when our puppy scratched our sons eye and he needed stitches.
We have put our two children into the French school system, have started to renovate our house, we have finished the attic and almost finished the bathroom.
This video begins at the very start, when we were in England. We explain about the post brexit visa process and much much more. Our channel has over 250 videos which pretty much documents everyday of our lives for the past 18 months. Our videos are educational, informative but most of all fun.
Oh, and to put everything out there, I was medically retired from the Police due to being diagnosed to complex PTSD due to psychological trauma within the military and Policing. My videos also talk about mental health, anxiety, catastrophising and mens mental health in general. I had done a video on this too

That’s so lovely to hear the children are doing so well at school and their French language is taking off. How sweet loving Pats Patch veggies and berries are looking amazing 🙌
Thanks so much Char. Kids are doing great and Pat's patch is too
Merci bien
Brilliant good to see more of Lisa too , wow her veggie patch , has really come on leaps and bounds , good to here the children are doing well at school ,your dog was funny checking out your weeding ❤❤❤
Thanks Christina for the lovely stuff you say. Yep Jean-Luc was certainly micro managing that day lol
Fab job Lisa!!!! Ooh, love the massive borage plants which i spied. Lovely video. You are doing brilliantly, the kids have settled so well, as have you - you look so happy (despite the weird weather). You can eat onions and garlic plants at any point in their growth cycle, so fill yer boots. 😊
Thanks Cathy so much, that means a lot to us. Weather has been completely unexpected as to what we thought. But if that's all we've got to worry about, then we aint doing too bad.
Next week is gonna pick up Woop woop
Hi found you a couple of weeks ago and enjoying your blogs. Did I hear Lisa say her grandparents were called Clifton? That’s my maiden name, my dad was from Markyate. Love be slow-mo ha ha
Hey Anne, Thanks for finding us and thanks for the comment. Lisa's Dad is a Clifton. Lineage dates back to the Scandinavia

Very Good!
I did not know that France has regional accents like in Britain and the US.😊
Hey, me neither. There are some parts of France where other French people can’t understand them, a bit like Gordies lol
Lisa Great Job editing ❤️
Thanks Chrissy, I’ll let her know 👍🇫🇷
I do like a veggie update..its looking really good.
Amazing how kids cope with new situations...
Diane et Eliott le Chien
Thanks Diane, it took a while but the kids are getting there 🇫🇷👍
Great job editing and Pats patch looking Fab. Well done Lisa.
Children will pick up and learn quickly. I regret skipping my French & German lessons at school I lost count how many times I had a whack from the headmaster
Bloody hell Rob. I feel your pain watching you doing the weeding. Time to get the flame thrower out!
Taff & Diane
Bloody hell Taff, you got whacked by the headmaster? How was the education system in 1879 anyway lol
Some more weeding today…….i can’t wait
Have a great weekend
🇫🇷👍
The School, and Head master ended up being proud of me a couple of years later after I left and joined the army. I was invited back there after winning an award of being best recruit soldier in Wales. The Local news paper had taken a lot of photos of me when I was out in Canada on exercise. I was surprised to see all the pics taken of me plastered all over the corridors and classroom walls when I went back there whilst on leave for a recruitment campaign . ( which had noting to do with quashing the Zulu's at the battle of Rorke's Drift in 1879 ). ☺
Hey! Rob.... You must waking up at nights screaming with cold sweats🥶 having nightmares weeding those bloody invasive Triffids.🤣
Have a cracking weekend mate. Chill out with a few beers & JD chasers 👍
Taff & Diane.
@@Escapetofrance-Charente
@@user-es4el4te3w Bet you felt like a celebrity mate going back to the school. What a great memory for you.
My sleep is shite anyway but the weeds are not helping
Have a cracking weekend buddy

I feel the pain for the weed extraction. The weather this year/from last OCTOBER has been weird, Children have brains like sponges. After approaching a school for our Son, feeling anxious for him, he did really well. Then we were approached by the Nantes Academy to put him into an intense French course. People ask if we have adopted him as he has no English accent. Veg patch is better than mine. My Strawberries have been exceptionally brilliant. Lisa is great at editing 😊❤. A great vlog guys❤
Thanks Diane
Yeah the weather has been both shocking and disappointing. Never mind though, it saves on the water bill lol
How old was your son when he came over? Does he speak English with a French accent? We were wondering that yesterday about Avangeline

Well done on the editing Lisa!
Interesting infor on the kids going to school and the language........................ so happy i dont have any kids, 🤣🤣🤣
Robbie your fench isn't too bad at all, nice one.
You got the video in there after all.
AJ
Hey Andy
Thanks for the comment and compliments.
884 days Duolingo and I’m just grasping future tense. Past tense is more difficult I’m finding lol
Yep, just video’d the UA-cam clip with my camera, at least that way UA-cam won’t know……..I don’t think

Well done on the editing Lisa and Paats Patch is absolutely fabulous, especially after a windy start to your growing season, Like most people here in the UK it's been a struggle to get things started, and in some cases restarting after a few failures. Keep it up.
Thanks John. Im glad Lisa has told everybody the origin of the veggie patch
@@Escapetofrance-Charente It means a lot to her, we can all see that, Perhaps a lean-to greenhouse by the main house will help her get started earlier next season,Would be lost without my Greenhouse
@@Alaskalad Thanks John, we don’t mention the green house word in our house anymore lol
Lisa must be having flashbacks, extracting video clips and creating a compilation! 😂
Blood hell Bev, where have you been? lol
I've been here, watching every video, I just haven't posted a comment for a while. 😊
@@user-zo8vw3ro2c That’s a relief Bev. Glad you are still watching 🇫🇷👍
Beeeeeeeeeeeevvvvvvvvvvv xx
Good morning Robbie and Lisa,
Hope you and the family are all good!
Lisa, absolutely brilliant job with the editing 👍 loved your choice of music too, glad you kept the slow mo though 😁
Really nice to see more of you in front of the camera too 😊
I'm sorry to hear about your mum, I lost mine when I was 15, I'm sure your mum is super proud of your veggie patch cos it's amazing, Im sure her spirit is there with you ♥️
That R pronouncitation clip had me crying 🤣🤣
Sorry Rob not meaning to leave you out mate, but you know I waffle 😂
Those fly tapes are a must, I absolutely hate the little germ carriers🤮
lovely to hear the kids are coming on leaps and bounds with the french,
Hope you're all having a great weekend and look forward to tomorrow's video!
Take care

Hey thanks Mark
I’ll pass on your super kind words to Lisa. She’ll be well chuffed.
Just did, she said thank you so much.
Pat died when Lisa was 13 so a similar age to new. Child hood trauma like that is devastating and has lasting symptoms as you know. All roads lead to home.
Glad you laughed at the video agin mate.
More weeding to do now mate, so gotta dash
Have a cracking Sunday
A plus tard
Robbie and Lisa
Great start to the day watching your videos , thank you 🍻
Hey thanks Nigel, what a lovely thing to say

I think that might have been the largest rat so far. Weeding without chemicals is so laborious, I have some rocked borders around the house and getting the weeds and random trees is such a serious pain. It seems to me the best chance to successfully live there and blend into society is to speak the language. Admittedly that is one of the frustrations I have with some of the other nationalities that come to the States, most don't want to learn English. The difficulty is anyone who tries to demand they learn English gets huge backlash from certain groups. The veggie patch is so impressive considering you started with nothing and now look at it, just taking off. Huge props to Lisa's first editing job. She did a smashing good job. It still have the same flavor as yours Rob, but just a little extra flare. Well done both of you. Laterz!!!
Thanks Gary. Thats really annoying that immigrants (and that is what we are) don't even feel the need to learn the language. It's rude and none inclusive. Anyway, rant over.
Weeds are bloody horrible. I just want to chuck a grenade into the garden and have done with it lol.
Yeah, Lisa's veggie patch - Pat's patch is doing great for sure. Cant wait for that garlic to dry out.
She did a great job editing mate, but she doesn't want to do it anymore. Lucky for me as I enjoy editing

The editing looks great. Only might a little dropshadow help to make text more readable when on a white background.
Noted! Thanks for the tip Joep
Great editing Lisa. Love your veg patch. I think that rat will be back Rob cos he knows were the food is. 😂😂😂❤
Thanks Josephine. I don't think the rat will be back. We've released loads down there and none have come back. Theres no food there anymore because of the new containers....thankfully
I am glad you mentioned the flys coming from London we have never really been near a farm on our first visit here we did notice the previous owners had used fly papers so this visit we brought over the electric zapper I suppose the 2 annoying things are the flys and the dust from the farm vehicles they don’t hang about lol great video as always
Love the electric racket. Don’t know whether the flys are getting slower or we are getting better, but they are easier to get now lol
Young children pick up languages very quick.
Je suis d'accord complètement
You will have to get Jean-Luc digging the weeds.
If only John. That would be amazing lol
Hi Rob and Lisa. I don’t know why but French rats are sort of cute😉😅. If they didn’t have those nasty tails.. Anyway great to hear the kids are doing so well. How about you two? Are you taking any course? So hard to learn new language when older. I have No ear for it. Pat’s Patch is doing really well. Lisa, I like the music you pick and editing is great too. Till next time❤❤❤
Hi Kathy
Me too, I think the rats are cute too. Not Lisa though, she hates them
Both Lisa and I are doing Duolingo and have been for about 2.5 years. Trying to get a French course is very difficult we find….nobody answers their emails.
Lisa’s choice of music is great….80s synth pop, you can’t beat it

Well done you two and great editing Lisa...we are having issues with flies at the moment so I would like to know where you got those things you hang from your cupboards...got my self a tennis racket too...well it is Wimbledon coming up😂
Hey thanks. Tennis rackets are great - deuce. The sticky strips are from most supermarkets. We got ours from Le Clerc in the insect repellant part of the shop, usually near where you but fire lighters from etc.
@Escapetofrance-Charente Thanks Rob...he says just swatting another of the little buggers
Nice one Lisa.
Pastèque = water melon
Merci bien.....so what's Melon. A neighbour gave us a Melon plant
it will likely be a cantaloupe or a honey dew melon
Exactly : Melon charentais = Cucumis melon Cantalupensis
@@J9E10 Jai compris, Merci bien

Do you miss the English roast dinner can you get Yorkshire puddings in france
Hi Paul,
Zero yorkshires over here so Lisa makes her own out of the eggs our hens laid. We do have a video on the channel where we have a sunday roast. I think it's called 'A perfect Sunday roast in France' Check it out :)
Awesome job on the editing Lisa, not so say that Rob doesn't too! Keep it up, you both do a great job.
Hey, thanks Alison
I think Lisa enjoyed the editing process but she doesn’t enjoy it like I do
Thanks for the comment. It means a lot to
Have a great weekend
🇫🇷👍
Some decades ago (40 years), in my childhood, the French people did not pronounce the “r” like you show in the video, the “r” has become guttural under the influence of the many Arab immigrants, it has become an Arabic “r”
That’s really interesting actually. Strange how accents/dialects develop over time
Thanks for the comment and info
Have a great weekend
👍🇫🇷
There were many different pronunciation of the R in french until the end of the XX century. You can hear rolled Rs in old song (piaf, brassens). And old farmers did it too.
Finally, the parisian R took over whole France (with the help of TV and radio).
Nothing to do with arabic (their’s is closer to german sound ch)
@@xouxoful again, very interesting. Somewhere is the middle there will be the truth maybe.
Accents change all the time in England. The London accent for example is not like it was 30 years ago, especially amongst the youth 🇫🇷💥
Thank you for the mention I try to do my best. With the Mosquitos get yourself UVA lights from Intermarche only 13 euros they have helped and the been using Insect Ecran spray made my cooper from my local pharmacy, To help with bites in my face. To get rid of the weeds have you considered using a rotavator on slow speed. I think its best just to start as you go on and get as much exposure to the language as you can, I even listen to French radio stations in the car when im driving. we all spend enough time in our cars dont we, dropped you a email
merci jean-marc
Hi Jean-Marc
Thanks for the comment. Been out all afternoon so not checked my emails yet, but thanks. Don't have mosquitos where we are, just big fat horse flies. Not really been bitten but they are bloody annoying for sure.
Thanks for all of your advice as always.
