For those unaware, if anyones questioning why the lack of blood or how this version is less violent, This was most likely due to the Hays code! This is in 1939 so the films made in this era followed a set of 'rules' and one of them was to keep violence and gruesome content to a minimum. That being said that just proves how good (in my opinion) the acting here was. :) no hate to anyone who prefers the other version!
I remember seeing this in the theater when I was 37 years till born. I was an atom in a popped kernel of corn. The theater looked like the size of the planet...I needed bifocals to see at such a great distance in the front row.
Yes, movies were censored back then, they weren't allowed to even curse, some words like Hell and Damn were allowed, but rarely used. I like the one with the guy from Jesus Christ Superstar who played Jesus. That actor really captured this moment best.
The most realistic fight scene I’ve ever seen, period! Very few movies make the audience feel the fear and pain that comes with fighting especially a bully with power. In this case being the bosses son. Lenny was lucky he had a friend George that was positive and knew the psychology of a bully. He has the power to terminate and fire any rancher at Will, with the exception being Slim, because he is his dads friend. That’s why he spoke nicely to him. Curly treats all the other ranchers like shit. But George , Once he gave the go ahead Lenny absolutely destroyed him. the same bully tactic that Curly used earlier to beat the shit out of a guy the one who said “ you’ll kill him if you fight back”, with two punches and knocked him out cold, just because he was in the same barn as his wife. This was during the Great Depression, it was extremely hard to find a decent job then. Lenny took so many punches from a golden gloves boxing champion that could knock out a regular man in two, he punched him several times in the face, in the stomach, in the ribs even and all he did was make Lennie angry. When George his best friend gave him the ok, Lennie smashed and broke Curlys hand. Before Lenny and George people were too scared to fight Curly, because they could get fired and get their ass beat or both.
Curly's hand was never the same. His wife "would have" opened jars for him for the rest of his life, but Lenny accidentally broke her neck in the barn.
+AlexfromNorway The Chaney version has aged superbly because the acting was superb. Lon was the best Lennie actor of them all. Other versions are good but the Chaney-Meredith effort is tops!
+toni jay Are you serious😂. You are a complete idiot, just because I like the newer one better doesn't mean I'm 12 mentally and it also doesn't mean I don't know what a good movie is😂. You are one big moron
Lol 😆 this version is authentic therefore it's the best. To quote social media " the 1992 version is a cheesy D movie at best with horrible acting. And the ending was cheesy and laughable. No one shoots their best friend in the head and casually walks off in the sunset and ride a bus" Even a bum off the street can do a better acting job.
When you see Lon Chaney Jr. crushing Curley's hand, his face looks terrified. When you see John Malkovich's face as he's crushing Curley's hand, his face looks FRIGHTENINGLY ANGRY AND VICIOUS.
When Curly picks a fight with Lenny and beats the stuffing out of him, it is a symbol of discrimination against co-workers / employees with intellectual disabilities.
A lot of people talk about the 1992 version of the movie compared to this version the 1939 version. This version is vastly superior to the 1992 version for a couple of reasons. One the guy they cast Lon Chaney Jr was actually born and raised in the country and was a big guy with abs. He grew up on farm throughout his childhood. He moved like a big strong guy because he was big and strong. Two they show he is so strong that he can "accidentally" hurt people severely without realizing it. Like in this fight with curly where he only used 50% of his strength whereas the Lenny in the 1992 movie strained and used 105% of his strength. He looked like he burst every blood vessel in his head. Not strong and way too skinny to be a farm boy. And the 1992 George pushed John Malkovich around. He should have really hit the gym hard but he didn't. And it showed. Lon Chaney Jr on the other hand was a beast of a man. He looked and definitely played the part. He "accidentally" put curly in the hospital. And when he gets excited he pushes George around inadvertently almost kicking his ass in the process.
Nope. The 1992 version is funny. That Lennie was too skinny and couldn't injure a mosquito let alone a grown human being. Whereas the 1939 version is the serious one because lon Chaney Jr. Is a legit country boy who worked out, had a great physique and everything about him was a Lennie. Dare to find a more authentic Lennie, outside of former wsm Brian Shaw.

Sure, Lennie may have been laughing, but that doesn't justify physical action against him. It's (laughter) not even illegal, regardless of the reason. His laughter didn't even have anything to do with Curly. Lennie did nothing physical until Curly did first. Lennie had perfect justification.
When I work I deal with many people who have handicaps and intellectual disabilities. Luckily now the ada (American disabilities association) protects them. Curly would be fired if he did that now. Back then the disabled people didn't have anyone to protect their unique requirements.
this is super cool i really love watching old movies it shows that even though technology isn't that great it was great like 50 years from now what was good to us will not be. Thanks =)
George is played by Bemis from the twilight zone, Mickey from Rocky, and Penguin from Adam West's Batman. Lennie is played by the original Wolf Man. Lon Chaney Jr was the wolf man two years after being Lennie. The similiar thing is Lennie and Larry both didn't want to hurt people. So in a way you can connect this Lennie to the original Larry Talbot.
I feel this version of the scene is more accurate to the book as Lennie is just frozen in confused in fear while he's breaking Curley's hand, meanwhile in the 1992 version he literally goes psycho mode and stares at Curley with the most menacing face ever
This is superb acting, and any who don't see that don't know what acting is all about. Chaney was the best Lennie of all time, and few movie experts would disagree, and Lon was always consistent with him being a simpleton who wanted to do nothing more than live off the fat of the land and tend the rabbits.
Well, looks at who Lon Chaney Jr.’s father was. One of the greatest of the silent film actor’s, Lon Chaney, the father, would have also been a great talkies actor had he lived longer.
1:44 the best cast Lenny hands down. The size of his hands, the roughness, the calluses, the roughness, definitely believable as a country boy. Because he was before he got into the movies and acting. I can't believe newer of mice and men movies misses the mark on "paying attention to detail". In LCJ's case, he was not so much underused as not cast in as many key leads as his talent commanded. But anybody who saw "Of Mice and Men" as well as his Wolf Man portrayals, which were all full of pathos, knew of his greatness. He was also excellent in smaller roles such as "There's a Lion in the Streets," "High Noon" and "The Defiant Ones." The same is true when he played the alcoholic father of Robert Mitchum in "Not as a Stranger" (title of film approx., but he was excellent: Stanley Kubrick knew of his greatness), and hilarious in "Men Prefer Brunettes," a Bob Hope vehicle. The man was very gifted.
Only reason Lon Chaney did not get the role was because Charles Laughton was able to clear his IRS problem in the US. In the meantime the Studio watched auditions of Lon Chaney Jr and several other actors. Lon was offered the part ,if Charles Laughton did not clear up his IRS problem. I do believe he would have done a great job playing "Quasimodo!"
