Triumph Tiger 1200 - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Long term owner review.

  • This is my two-year 20,000 Km review of the Gen 3 Triumph Tiger 1200. It covers 2018, 2019 & 2020 models as they are all the same with no differences. This is as frank as you will get, warts and all. The bike has been the least reliable bike I have ever owned but somehow, I still want to keep the thing!
    I mention some features I would like to see on a Gen 4 version of the bike but while editing the video I realise this bike has probably gone as far as it can go in its present format, there is nothing more it needs so my title screen mentions Gen 3.5 instead, just upgrades or feature fixes I would like to see.

      @@albertoj.mollinedo4116 KTM seat height is an issue for me, probably too tall, and I really have a problem with chain-drives on motorcycles that are supposedly meant for long distance. I'm also imagining that the Triumph will be more comfortable for long-distance and 2-up riding.

    This bike is amazing, I have a TIGER model 2018. I love all the technologies and how it is super safe. The engine is perfect! there's no vibration at all in any RPM! the way the bike dumps the torque on the wheels is exciting! the only thing to say to Tiger 1200 owners is that they should be careful about it stopping, due to the engine's Center of Gravity being higher, when the bike is stopped, with little angle of inclination of the bike to any side, even a person in great physical condition can drop the bike on the ground, because the weight increases exponentially as a little more angle is added to left or right and the legs do not have gallows to keep the bike in place. but when on the move, the bike is perfect and super safe, very stable! then the little weight problem when the bike is stopped goes unnoticed. the bike is perfect! state of the art! congratulations to TriumphT

    Yes, the comfort on my XCA is wonderful, and being comfortable on a bike is a major Plus. Love the power of the engine so much that I don't like ridding my street triple 675 any more, it just feels so under powered and revs out every gear so fast. I'm on the balls of my feet with the XCA seat in the low position and I am sure that's going to bite me in the ass one day. Great ending to the video with the road ending at the water.👍 I'm surprised you don't crash more often with all those wet roads, glad you saved it when you got squirrely there. Have fun and be safe.

      Cheers Mark. I only have a 29" leg and ended up fitting the Lust Racing 20mm lowering kit, very glad I did. If I purchased another T12 I would go for the XRx Low. I rode one and it was quite a different experience. Watch my "temporarily lowering ride height" video for help at slow speeds/parking etc. As for the wet roads - they come with the territory, you just got to get used to it! Modern tyres are great though compared to when I first started riding. Thanks for commenting.

    Great video Terry, I agree with everything you said. I’ve got a 2018 XRT 6500mls. Had one spot and an indicator swapped cause of moisture but otherwise all good. The biggest weakness on the bike is me, slow speed I am still improving but it will bite as I found out when I dropped it after one week. Got on it and it rolled off the stand 🙄 Learnt my lesson and now leave it in gear and use then front brake when getting on.
    Overall I love it, best of all it’s not a GS and I like that.

      This bike is a heavy beast at slow speeds. I did a Motorrad level 1 off-roading course with a buddy (he had a 2014 BMW R1200GS) and I can say I went down a few times. The Tiger is a difficult bike for technical slow speed stuff. It really helps to be tall and throw your weight big time to off-set that top heaviness (I am 6 feet tall and 200 pounds). Very happy with the SW Motech upper guards that I installed to my Tiger. They protected the bike 100%.

    I am 5'8" with a 30" inseam. I created a custom rider mode and set the suspension to off road leaving all other settings as in on road. This lowered the bike making it easier for me to get on and off. If I want to, I can still set it back to rider when I know I am not going to be stopping much. If I am going to be in town, I just set it back to my custom rider mode. I think I need to change tires as you suggested because there is an awful roar coming up in front of the tank at highway speeds.

My bikes problems are not a true reflection of most peoples ownership experience. I would still stress though that this is not a bike to be sitting on unless you can flat foot it. The run out editions are great value too.

I'm 6 ft. about 32" inseam and I'm wondering if the bike may be too small after all. When I first got it, I did a 4 day Big Bend National Park ride (Texas) which was about 300-400 miles per day, now I can't do nearly that. I've installed Triumph comfort gel seat/ TEC front springs/Fox piggy back rear shocks / Dart windscreen. We get ALOT of wind in Texas and it really causes fatigue. Yes, a lot of money, perhaps consider a second hand 2018 XRt or XCa which will be a bargain compared to a 2018 BMW? Some people just don’t like the Tiger’s top heavy nature and sell on, there always seems to be plenty of 2 year or 1 year old Tiger 1200’s out there. As long as you can totally flat foot the bike, don’t buy if you can’t.

    @vidright 3 роки тому +2

    I'm riding a 2018 XRT and i absolutely agree to your opinion and your experience with the big Tiger. Both the pros and the cons. One drawback i think you have forgotten: The really poor torque at lower revs for such a big engine. Although it has gotten better since the last service software update at 16000 km, the torque up to 4000 revs for 1200cc is still more than unsatisfactory .

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  3 роки тому +2

      Yes, I think that it is definitely a characteristic of this engine but I think it was intentionally designed as so. I am only guessing, but I would say the Triumph Engineers wanted to make this bike with smooth and progressive power delivery across a wide range of revs so as 1) not to stress the shaft drive and 2) perform well as a touring/pillion perch. I rode the 1200 Scrambler when it came out and I swear my arms were an inch longer when I got off! That vividly highlights the exact point you are making.

    • @vidright
      @vidright 3 роки тому +1

      @@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff At first, sorry for my not so proper english, i'm german. I'm afraid the reason for the weak torque is that Triumph engineers didn't handle the switch to Euro 4 as well. If you remember the first version of the Explorer, it still had a lot of power even at low speeds. So I don't think that was done with the 2018 model to protect the shaft drive. I also believe that the wonderful smooth throttle response is a very big advantage of this engine, but regardless of that, the engine should just be more powerful at low revs. This is particularly noticeable when you are out and about in the Alps. I hope that I can change something about the Tiger's mapping when the warranty has expired.
      Incidentally, I had the same experience as you with the 1200 Scrambler. That bike pulls like a tractor. ;-)
      But none the less, I believe we both made the right choice with the Tiger 1200. The comfort and capabilities over long distances are almost unmatched on this motorcycle.
      Have fun on two wheels and lots of wonderful experiences!

      @@vidright Cheers Wilfried - two up and fully loaded you definitely need to give it a bit of the wrist alright. The comfort though, yes, superb. They did lighten the flywheel on the 2018 model onwards and I wonder if the 2012 model onwards felt like they had more low down oomph with the heavier one? It's all relative though, you should try my 1995 Daytona 1200 you just can't use the power of the thing it's all at the top end. Lower down the revs it feels much weaker than the Tiger. The positive thing is that we own them so all good!

    it isn't only the midday sun that mad dogs and englishmen venture out in! Camping in January! I am interested in how the new Tiger 900 turns out, though not seen any reviews for the damm thing, yet. I'm also weighing up ,the scrambler 1200, and the Guzzi 850TT ( yeah, it lacks the power of this and the BMW GS, but it'll be more than enough for me, as I just returned to biking after 30 years away. I bought an old BMW f650 on a whim, purely for the summer to come, but I am finding more and more excuses to go and ride it, so am now planning on getting probably my last bike ever). I'm even considering the Rocket 3. Why not? I'll be dust soon enough, and the few wintery trips on my f650 made me realise how good it is to ride a bike, again.
    BTW, what made you choose this over the BMW GS1250?

      The Tiger 900 isn't released until March so a bit early for the journo reviews. You'll get some good info on it at the London Motorcycle show in a couple of weeks time though. As for the Rocket 3, if it floats your boat....you can't take it with you and all that so why not? If you are done with very long distance days then the Tiger 1200 might not be for you, I think it would be wasted as an occasional bike. If you want something to stir the soul for a day or weekend out then the Scrambler or Rocket 3 gets my vote. The Guzzi does take a unique angle on things and a type of bike I might buy one day, just not now. If it's your last bike definitely buy with your heart, don't buy anything boring! The GS, hmm, a great bike I am sure, the brand just doesn't fully gel with me and everyone has one! If there is one BMW I would have though it is the racer, drop dead gorgeous but totally impractical by all accounts.

    What tyre pressures do you run on your bike???
    I used to go with the factory recommended 2.2/2.7bar, but the tyres wear unevenly on the sides. Now I go with 36/42psi and the bike is easier to control but is kind of jumpy over potholes. Cant decide really. I have done 42,000 miles for 18 months so far but there's still things I cant figure out.

I would love to know Triumph’s reasoning. If you look at the manual, on the XR model, ion the image of the dash showing the TPM display it even shows 36/42? I find the front quite vague at 32 when heavily loaded.

      @HristoKirev 4 роки тому +1

      Maybe my bum is a bit too sensitive, but I find it better with soft damping when the bike is light and harder when it's loaded. Also, I say it's jumpy but I have an SV650 too and after I ride it for a few days, going back to the Tiger is like going from VW Polo to a Bentley. 😁

      I run the Triumph recommended 32/39 psi. All good I find. I am hesitant to run 36 psi in the front simply because I ride this bike very hard in the turns and I want to maximize front traction (avoid a low side). I doubt that the 4 extra psi will compromise that, but I am not willing to take that chance. I actually push this bike faster in turns than I could my 2014 Yamaha FJR1300ES. However, the FJR is a much faster bike coming out of the turns and for wide open acceleration.

    Hello from Canada, quick intro. Had a 1995 Triumph 900 Sprint Sport low low mileage had been in storage for about 7 years. Anyways when running the power and torque from the over designed engine from Cosworth was amazing. Faults, carburetors a total PITA plus getting at them and the air filter and God forbid the plugs or valves. Engine won't start unless ECU saw 12volts while cranking, so a couple of days off a maintainer it ain't starting up. Whinny gearbox and the worst seat for numb bum. I held out waiting for the new Trophy and what a let down. So disgusted I sold the Triumph and bought an 07 BMW K1200LT. Fab bike great mpg and comfort ride and weather protection it came with a Unigo trailer for camping and long haul touring. Now closing in on 66 years young the 850lb wet beemer is a little to much to handle especially at low speed traffic situations. Anything past 10 degree lean either way and it's the Titanic all over again but once moving she glides along and the twisties is awesome just keep the rpm up high where she likes to be and the ride is fantastic. But I now fancy some off road adventures that asphalt roads can't give. Watching you're video here the motor on this bike sounds so beautiful and I can't hear that irritating high pitched whistle from the gearbox. But that said your scaring me off with the issues you've had and some of the other owners in the comment section. The Trophy had horrible electronic issues I heard from the local stealership and servicing costs are crazy expensive. The first 1000klm service was a staggering $750 and that's after just paying for the damn thing. I wonder if I shouldn't be looking for a Japanese bike, they seem more reliable and have more coverage in North American continent for servicing and parts. I want to fly the British flag here as I'm a Brit myself but Triumph despite what they have achieved since the late 1990's they seem lacking in quality control and Heaven knows what will happen now,they are partnered with Baja in India if you doubt me checkout the Royal Enfields they put out for quality. Anyway loved the review, very concise, the bike sounds awesome but if weight and top heaviness is equivalent to my current ride ill have to look at other models. God bless from Canada 🇨🇦 and keep the rubber side down.

    My 2018 Tiger 1200 XCA now has 24,000 kms on it and the issues I had or have with the bike are : water in a fog light replaced under warranty, the muffler (can) has been replaced under warranty for moving in the carbon fiber support (scuffing of the can). That is all for warranty issues. The clutch has some minor juddering when cold (at times, not a consistant issue). I ride the bike somewhat hard/aggressively and off-road. No real complaints on my part. Yes the bike is a heavy machine at slow speeds off-road and it is no GS. The quick shifter is butter smooth under hard acceleration and very decent under normal shifting. I don't use the quick shifter for low rpm shifting. There is some heat coming off the bike which can be an issue at slow speeds and in very warm conditions, but I can tolerate it without it being a real problem. On cool days, it is nice to get some warmth. Very comfortable bike and is fast enough for my needs. I come from a Yamaha FJR1300ES and the Triumph is more comfortable for long rides. The only big negative for now, is having to remove the fuel tank for service. What a pain in the behind. Shame Triumph doesn't have OEM cut off valves to avoid spillage. Time will tell if there are any issues with reliability in the next year or two, but for now, I have faith in this bike.

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  4 роки тому

      The clutch juddering seems a common complaint, I had it for a short while but it petered out. Muffler, me too, see my other vid. Did your driveshaft housing end up getting marked because of it? The heat has never really impacted me but that's because I live in Ireland, I have no doubt it will affect others in warmer climates. On the tank, well, that's not new, I need to remove it on my 1995 Daytona 1200 for a valve service every 12K miles. Unless at the valve check service interval on the T12 I wouldn't even lift the tank to change the air filter or check the spark plugs (unless I lived in a very dusty environment) because you just know they will be just fine. I'm out of warranty by a couple of days now, hoping mine has settled, pretty sure it has and I have trouble free motoring ahead, fingers crossed!

      @@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff I did see your other video about the can potentially moving. I actually posted a link to your video on two triumph forums so that other users were made aware of the issue (I commented your video too). My driveshaft housing was fine because I still had the rubber piece in place to protect the housing from the center stand. If the can would have moved much more, it could have become an issue certainly. About the fuel tank removal, my air filter was very dirty at the 16,000 kms service so I am glad that I did that. I was actually surprised at how dirty it was. I do ride off-road so anyone just sticking to pavement could probably extend that part of the service to a bit more (air filter, not engine oil). As for the warranty, I ended up taking a 7 year extended warranty from my dealer. I figured that with all the tech on this bike that issues could be a problem and expensive to fix. The warranty covers basically everything from suspension to all electronics including the TFT screen, tranny and engine. I don't normally get extended warranties but coming from a bulletproof Yamaha FJR1300, I had my doubts about the Tiger (new model in 2018).
