Triumph Tiger 1200 - XCx or XCa?

  • A quick look at the Triumph Tiger 1200 XCa and whether it represents good value compared to the XCx. Although I have focussed on the XC range a similar difference exist between the road styled XRx and XRt machines. I have purposefully ignored the entry level XR road based T12 which doesn't come with TSAS suspension and a host of other features. The XCx is priced with non black paint for price comparison. As ever, this is just my opinion and if the budget is not limited of course you might choose the top of the range machine regardless. Since making this video Triumph released the Desert & Alpine models which I think represent the best value for money in the range. They are based on the mid range XRx and XCx and come with the quick shifter as standard amongst other things.

    I just purchased 2020 Tiger 1200 desert edition. It's based on the XCx with the addition of Titanium and Carbon Fiber wrapped Arrow Silencer, Triumph Shift Assist. I'll be picking it up next weekend! Thanks for all the informative videos and words of praise for the Triumph tiger! So many BMW fanboys out there always hate it when comparing the two.

    Cool motorcycle I have exactly the same model in white. Even the bag on the passenger seat has the same model and the same place to give back support. I changed the windshield for a higher one, because I am 194 cm tall, now I have a "puig" and it is pleasantly quiet.

    Is that a home made Gentry MG TF kit car in your garage? Great review on the bikes Terry. You can install DIY Symtec Heat Demon pads from Ebay (from the USA) in the two seats quite easily for a total cost of £150. It depends on the seat area. The Heat Demons are small at 225mm square and work with smaller seat areas. You can buy larger seat elements from the UK still cheaper but you need to check the seat plan size. You just unstaple the covers to insert them and you'll need a staple gun to restaple the covers back on. Put little marks around them underneath before unstapling them to ensure they go back on in the exactly the same location or it will look unsightly with creases etc. Just use care and attention and it's fine. I've installed them on 6 seats now and al havel worked brilliantly.
    Denali D2 lights are better in every way eg light output, quality, appearance, than Triumphs stock fogs and two thirds the price. Triumphs quickshifter is to me absolutely essential as the stock gearbox change mechanism feels agricultural, noisy, slow and very clunky. You can easily change the silencer can sometime whenever. The XRX makes better sense to me as the wheels are also easier to keep clean and make the bike weigh less. And this gives it less unsprung weight which makes for better handling. What's there not to like about the middle range ??? It makes sense to get one instead with a quickshifter... at least to me anyway.

      It isn't RT1200BIKER, it is a 1952 MG TD, runs a treat but is slow, 50MPH is about as fast as I want to go in it, the little 1250cc engine is screaming at that point! Great to know about the Heat Demons, they sound like good value, as ever it is down to how much of your own effort your willing to put into these changes, I would have a go but many wouldn't. I got my heated Keis vest on offer for about £85/€100 and it is a great value item for winter riding, better than any other warming accessory I can think of. I have used it a couple of years now and am constantly amazed how well your mind works riding in winter when your core is warm, so different. I think the XRx is the value model in the range and agree on those alloys, you also get the option of the low version which I have ridden and found very good too. That quick-shifter transforms the bike and is executed nearly perfectly by Triumph, it gives the bike a whole new character and makes that gearbox super smooth. I don't think the gearbox is that bad without it but I do get a great thump as I engage first. Happy trails!

    Terry
    I never commented on this video. I put a down payment on my XCX because my dealer that I have been buying bikes from for 40+ years cut me a "Half off" deal on the bike. I hadn't planned on picking it up for a few months at least. He called and said he had a buyer that would take it right away and would I let him sell it. I said yes and told him I would just get the "Desert Edition. He gave me a stupid price on that one as well, $15000 US. Long story short, when I had cash in hand, The XCX that I wanted was still available for $8500 Less than the Desert. I added the fog lights and the quick shifter and have the bike of my dreams! I love the Gloss Jet Black paint scheme !!! I have owned bikes with the matte finishes and they show all kinds of hand prints and stuff and are a Be-atch to clean. Black is the NEW Black!!! Like I told you before, I added the GIVI pannier mounts you suggested and ditched the Triumph ones per your video and added the SW-Motech upper crash bars.
    Great video Terry!!!
    Cheers

    Terry, I like to do my own maintenance on my bikes because I know its being done right, but I found out that you can't reset the service overdue message on the TFT screen. Do you have your dealer do your maintenance on your Tiger or do you do it yourself.

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff

      It's only once a year and the dealer is 20 minutes from me so I let them do it. Updating the firmware would be my biggest issue and bleeding brakes passed the ABS unit would require a little thought without an OBD interface and some dealer tool software. Not sure I would have the patience anymore for things like valve checks and/or shimming either, especially on this bike. Gone are the simple days of cleaning out a carb float bowl, changing a filter and adjusting an easily reachable rocker!

      I confirm that the engine ejects warm air to the feet but it is felt in traffic jams if the air temperature exceeds 23 degrees Celsius. These are short moments and in my case I do not treat this as a problem because I use the motorcycle only for tourist trips.

      Hi Mark, sorry missed this comment. Yes they do eject some heat around the base of the tank and I would be wary of this in all year round very hot climate. I think a test drive would be required for sure. For me in Western Europe it is a non-issue though.

    Hi could you do a video or explain how you’ve mounted your TomTom rider please?
    I’ve just picked up my new xrx and want my TomTom rider mounted where yours is. I had a first generation explorer and it was easy due to the top bar of the screen.

      Hi Steven - there are a bunch of ideas on a dedicated Triumph Tiger 1200 forum, see link below. I went the low cost solution, a RAM mount ball for £5.83. I think the pics in that will give as much detail as any video. There are ideas from others too.

      Fabrizio Genna - I think it wouldn’t sit well. Too tight for space and it will add weight and make it wobble too much. I drop the Sat Nav in my pocket or top box when leaving the bike.

      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  3 роки тому +1

      £11,000 looks like a good deal to me for an XCx with 1 mile. Sounds like they have preregistered it to meet a sales quota. Ask if you are getting a full 2 year manufacturer’s warranty with that. If there is a bit of luggage going with it all the better, don’t don’t rush to buy the Triumph luggage, have a look around and see what’s on offer. Check it is not a Generation 2 machine. If it has a TFT it is generation 3.

    Beautiful bike mate!
    I think that one of the reasons someone buys a bike is the looks of the bike. And although these cornering lights "do nothing" they make this bike look even more beautiful than the "simple" version. Same for the windshield. Much better the tall one than the standard. Strange thing though, i prefer the standard exhaust system than arrow! And yes, this quickshifter is GREAT!
    Cheers from Greece / Yamaha FJR rider.

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  5 років тому +1

      You are right of course, I was fortunate I had the money and went for the XCa and that was my heart going for the looks. I think manufacturers know this and this is how they get the up-sell! PCP also makes the difference less of an issue although I managed to avoid that luckily. FJR a fine bike. If I was in the market for a Supertourer there is only two to choose from, the R12xxRT and the FJR, the FJR gets my vote.

      @@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff Thanks, because here in India the XCA or the XRT are not available for the 1200 model. Only XCX is available so your video was helpful. I dont really need the quick shifter, the extra riding modes, the heated seats and the triumph fog lamps (will put thr denali d4s which I have).
