I don’t know if it was just me but I was having issues pulling up your site and finding the step-by-step you were talking about. Looks great and we will be building two
Yup…same problem. None of the links, Reddit, Facebook, or website work. The web-address redirects you to a commercial travel company. Admittedly the post is 8 years old, but still useful, so a new working link on the UA-cam profile would be good.
FYI tack the webbing and straps to one of the panels before sewing the two panels together first. This will save the webbing etc from slipping out of place. Great looking build BTW!
Awesome job... Im looking for something that will be lightweight and have lots of pockets for when i go to Europe. Thanks for the video it has inspired me.
Amazingly clear video. Thanks a lot! I notice your website is down. Do you happen to have a page/file with the details anywhere? Cheers from Switzerland. CM
I've been doing DIY quilts, hammocks, tarps - now iv found your videos for backpacks!! I'm sick. Will my brother xr3240 be up to the task? I've sewed webbing with it...I want to make a pack like this for my nephew and my kids - commercial packs for kids are like 3 lbs - silly
The website is not working. Very interesting is purchase a pattern. I am 4'10" 104lbs and a light backpack that I could make fit me sounds awesome. How do I purchase pattern?
Hey, nice video ! I took a look on your on your blog and i would like to know what is the name of the fabric (mesh) you used to do do the big turquoise back pocket.
The mesh material came from a laundry bag. It works ok, but is a little fragile. Try looking for" utility" or "athletic" mesh online. You could look on DIY gear supply, if they don't have it they will at least point you in the right direction. Hope that helped! Ben
Hi from the North West.... of England. I really like your design and will have a try at making one based on this. I am planning to walk the West Highland Way next March and need something lighter than my 30 year old, tough as the hills, far too heavy old rucksack. I've already made a tent and have some ripstop nylon let over, so will try that. I have a question though - would this design still work if I use a single width of material to incorporate both panels and both sides? That would mean a single sewn edge at one corner, plus the bottom, of course. And as I will be carrying a fair weight in sub-arctic conditions, I want to sew continuous bands of webbing around vertically and horizontally to spread the load.
Hey Sheldon, If you want to minimize your seams, you could make a "U" shape and add two side panels, which would save you from sewing in a bottom. The problem with sewing less seams is that the geometry of the bag will be off. Seams basically give sewn projects their shape. The webbing idea sounds like it would add a ton of exterior strapping options, but it might be time consuming. Good luck with your pack!
My partner explained this to me, that I would end up with a sack with straps on it. Thanks for your confirmation. I will do it in the same sections as you, to keep the general shape, but I will be taking a fair load so want to distribute the weight, I know you are right about the complication, I will let you know how it goes !
If you plan to carry larger than an ultralight load you may want to look into frame options, which could help spread the load over the frame. I can't wait to see it!
How do you upgrade the backpack, like pockets hydration packs? Need more lessons. BTW I made a Tyvek backpack from your video, but don't now how to upload back to you. Thanks a million, Tony
If you want to add pockets you can sandwich fabric in between the seams before you sew them together. I would love to see your pack. Feel Free to post on my Facebook page, or make a video and send me the link. Cheers, Ben
Glad You liked it! I get some of my materials from a local fabric store, and I get the really good stuff from Scott At DIY Gear Supply. diygearsupply.com/
I currently do not have a video about that. The straps in this vid are from an old day pack. Straps are tricky because there are so many layers of material to go through at once. You would likely need an industrial machine to do so, unless you decided to make them without padding. Cheers!

Thumbs up man! Gotta love the no-fancy minimalist approach. Cheers

Hi, what type of ripstop did you use? There are so many different kinds by weight and treatment. I don't know which one to pick!

How'd you make the shoulder straps? Do you have a tutorial for that too?
I currently do not have a video about that. The straps in this vid are from an old day pack. Straps are tricky because there are so many layers of material to go through at once. You would likely need an industrial machine to do so, unless you decided to make them without padding.
