    Tried trimming the edges of flattened cans, but still managed to nick my finger a time or two; found that a slight fold over, about 2 or 3 millimetres, then hammered flat dulled the edges much better, and solved the problem...Cheers.

    Very clever the way you sanded the edges to make it safe. I turned my edge over an eighth of an inch and flattened it. Your way saved a little weight. Thanks for showing me up! :-)

    Making this tomorrow. Off out on my first Hammock Camping trip this weekend and I've made a coke can stove, this will be the perfect addition. Many thanks from the U.K.

    I just put U bends facing opposite directions on one end of two separate cans and slide them together to make a bigger screen after folding over the top and bottoms and putting holes in the bottom and top of each screen.

    That was pretty darn unique!
    The only difference that I would do with making it, would be, to round the corners so that they're not pointy.

    Nice! I can dig this for sure! Better than my folding windscreen that has to live in its own bag

    I'd just come up with that two nights ago and had never seen it before . Same idea ! It works very well , huh ? I'm J.B.Welding to get larger sizes and adding neodymium magnets to set ends surely . Increases your boil times as well . I used a leather hole punch around the base of mine . I think for sure it must be as good as any windscreens but yeah , potentially better than most or any even . Right on ! Super light and that almost "snap bracelet" like memory makes it great . Just store wrapped around some other component of your cook kit . Fun to see ! Thanks !

    right on man. I just rounded off the corners on mine. gotta get a hole punch like that. never thought of sanding the edges down however I did scrub the paint off with steel wool. thanks bro

    Consider making a screen which doesn't contact the pot and allows the hot air to flow between it and the pot wall. You'll get more efficient heat transfer and use less fuel.

      Thanks for the advice. I'll look into it!

      Just use a couple of tent stakes to prop the screen open a little more.

    Nice! I usually use a piece of flashing. I prefer the durability, but if you don't have any this would be a great 2nd choice. Nice shooting, too.

    • @Imightberiding
      @Imightberiding 7 років тому +3

      I second that flashing motion. Having been a carpenter for about 30 yrs it is second nature to use building materials in my kit. I liked this as a quick, light solution, although a wider can would produce a fuller wind screen. I did give it a thumbs up for the reason he actually took the time to sand the sharp edges.

    I couldn’t see what you used to prop up the pot and if the wind shield was meant to cover the whole pot or just 3/4 of it in the direction of the wind, as it seemed a bit short when you wrapped it around the pot earlier in the video. Great video, good call on the stronger AL, and smart use of the hole punch much better than drilling.

    You can get stainless steal heat treating foil, on ebay. Some sell small cut offs. Last forever!

    Nice work. Purchased the caldera cone for my MLD 850 pot/mug recently and, while effective, I'm not sure I like the bulk or the idea of slicing up things in my pack if I don't use the tumbler case. May give this a try and go back to my trusty fancy feast stove.

    TIP: round the corners with your scissors to prevent a 90* edge that can cut you. Question though, would this be useful on a canister stove? I would think it could keep more of the heat directed on the pot and help with wind as well so your burn is more efficient.

  • @techguy9023

    You could put two pairs of holes opposite each other and put titanium tent stakes through it to hold up your pot

    like the idea, but have wondered about conduction. seems a wind screen prevents convection, which this may not do as well as it is against the pot. I know your thinking of just the stove but you need to think stove and pot.

    In my experience this type of windscreen needs some more holes for better combustion, otherwise alcohol does not burn as efficient and takes longer for boil.

    Love the beats man. Made a screen just like this for my stove but found the odor to toxic when the aluminum was heated by the stove. Have you experienced something similar? Thx.

    • @MikesFitnessGoals
      @MikesFitnessGoals 7 років тому

      That smell is likely the thin plastic lining burning off. A few heat cycles should complete the process.
      Love the beats, too.

    So is this windscreen also a pot stand. I have a wire or tent peg across the middle of mine to make it hold up the pot.

      he's using a cat food can stove (check out www.supercatstove.com/about.php) which supports the pot by itself

    Nice windscreen but doesn't it need to be all the way around the pot for better efficiency?

    • @martin.feuchtwanger
      @martin.feuchtwanger 6 років тому +1

      If the bulk of the windscreen is towards the wind, it's doing its job. The gap gives you space to see or light the stove.

    • @xenaguy01
      @xenaguy01 4 роки тому +1

      In my area, the wind only comes from one direction at a time. You put the gap facing _away_ from the wind.

    Wouldn't look as clean, but keeping the shiny side facing inwards would probably reflect more heat back to the stove

    Instead of rubbing the edges down ,just fold them over and flatten them down ,much safer.
